Official Disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Chin Ho Kelly, Kono Kalakaua, Adam 'Toast' Charles, Governor Patricia Jameson and Detective Meka Hanamoa, do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Detective Sergeant Danielle 'Danni' Williams probably can be considered to be mine by now. Although she was originally based on male Danny, she soon evolved becoming her own person. She has her own background, her own family, her own history and her own distinct personality. This isn't to say that the Danny Williams we all know and love is completely gone, he still emerges through her at times. I like to think of female Danni as what Danny could have been if everything in his life had gone his way. As in full custody of Grace and a decent relationship with his ex.

The character of Grace has also changed slightly due to the change in Danni. Her surname is Taylor as this is her father's surname and was Danni's married name (Danni reverted back to her maiden name when she was divorced). Her parents also are amicable which has also impacted Grace but never fear, she's still the sweetheart we know and love, if anything she's more a sweetheart now.

The character of Supervisory Special Agent Jack O'Connor, Detective Abraham Lee. Doctor Rosie Lange, Kent Deacon, Ross Hall, Sasha Hall, Nicole Hall, Brent Cox and, Supervisory Special Agent Tom Beaumont, Special Agent Walker Humphries however do belong to me as does any other character who you do not recognise from the show. Please do not use them, or my version of Danni and Grace without first asking for my permission to do so.

Chapter Summary

Steve glared at the CSU Agent in front of him, taking in the other man's impassive face and found himself briefly wishing that he was back in the Navy where the chain of command structure actually seemed to mean something to the people who followed it. Though, he grudgingly admitted to himself, the other man was following a chain of command, he was just making it perfectly clear to Steve that he wasn't included in that chain which meant that he wouldn't be getting what he wanted no matter how many times he asked for it.

Steve McGarrett's Point of view

Steve glared at the CSU Agent in front of him, taking in the other man's impassive face and found himself briefly wishing that he was back in the Navy where the chain of command structure actually seemed to mean something to the people who followed it. Though, he grudgingly admitted to himself, the other man was following a chain of command, he was just making it perfectly clear to Steve that he wasn't included in that chain which meant that he wouldn't be getting what he wanted no matter how many times he asked for it.

"Look I don't have time for this back and forth with you, I want your name and I want the name of your supervisor as well." Steve demanded, breaking the silence which had fallen between the two of them, his eyes glancing down to the man's dark blue jumpsuit to see if it would give him the answer to at least one of his questions before he looked back up, meeting the other man's narrowed dark eyes.

His mouth was open as though he was about to speak though Steve wasn't sure whether it was to give him the information he requested or to tell him to take a flying leap off of the nearest building when a second, already familiar voice smoothly cut in, dispersing some of the thick tension which had been steadily growing.

"Hey Steve, I've been looking for you, is everything okay here? Did you find anything useful inside for us?"

Steve tilted his head to the side as Danni came to a stop next to him, her large grey eyes flickering between the two men thoughtfully before she focused her attention on the CSU Agents whose dark gaze softened as he smiled at Danni, indicating that the two of them knew each other though that piece of information was hardly a surprise to Steve. He was beginning to think that his partner knew everyone who worked in CSU and plenty of the other departments who they had come across during the course of their ongoing investigation.

"Danni, I wondered if I would see you at this scene, I heard from Ryan earlier that you had been given a transfer which amounted to a promotion. Congrats on that, it's well deserved in my opinion." The man commented with a nod towards her, the simple action causing her to smile back at her.

Steve frowned slightly as he watched the blonde who was still focusing her attention on the CSU Agent who reacted by uncrossing his arms.

"Hello Tom, I didn't expect to see you for another week or so, I thought you were meant to still be on vacation. How are you? How was your trip?" She asked him, sounding genuinely interested in his response.

"Yeah, it was a good vacation thanks Danni girl. We got back last Friday and spend the weekend recovering from jetlag. I was meant to come back to work tomorrow but we've got so many active cases in at the moment that Ry rang me and asked if I could come back a day early and take my last vacation day at another time, we had nothing really planned for it so I said yes to help him out." Tom explained with a shrug at her, Danni nodded at him.

"Well I'm glad you had a good time because no offence but you definitely needed the break." She said before she lifted her hand and waved it towards Steve. "I see you've met Commander McGarrett, he's the head of the Governor's new taskforce and also my new partner." Danni introduced.

"Oh yeah, I've just had the pleasure of meeting him." Tom stated flatly going onto explain when Danni shot him a questioning look. "The Commander was just demanding that I handed him over some evidence we have bagged because he said there was someone on his team who, according to him, could do a better job at analysing it then we can."

Steve's eyes flickered to the side in time to catch Danni suppressing a wince, she was quiet for a second before she spoke, her voice surprisingly soothing.

"Sorry Tom, I doubt he meant it as it came across to you, we're just trying to deal with a difficult case at the moment with multiple victims including children. I'm sure you can understand our need to find out whoever is responsible for those deaths as soon as we can." She told him before she continued to speak. "All we need is your reports so we can go through them to see whether there is something on the hard drive which we can use which will point us in the direction of our suspect. I know that your team has been incredibly busy at the moment with all the Fraud cases you've been working on for the white-collar team. We have two computer experts on our team so if it's easier and helpful to you then we could take the physical hard drive from you and go through it instead. We can easily keep you in the loop with everything we're doing as we're doing it." She offered with a smile at him.

Tom looked at her carefully for a moment clearly running through her suggestion in his mind before he spoke, the previous aggression which had been flavouring his voice gone.

"I have to take it back to Headquarters so it can be logged in properly as evidence but once that has been done then you or a member of your team can come by and collect them. You can run whatever tests you need on them as long as you send us copies of your reports, keep us in the loop and return them to us once you've finished so they can be put with the rest of the evidence for the case." He stated, smiling slightly when Danni merely nodded at him.

"That sounds fine with me, thank you Tom, we appreciate it." She told him, watching as Tom turned away from them with a single nod at Danni before he headed back into the house. Danni waited until he was out of hearing range before she turned and shot Steve a confused look. "What on earth was all that about Steve?" She demanded as she searched his eyes, clearly looking for answers.

"I told him to give me the hard drive for the main PC computer they found in the house and he refused to hand it over to me." Steve told her shortly, frowning slightly when she sighed in response to his comment, reaching up and pinching the bridge of her nose before she dropped her hand and focused on him again.

"You can't just demand evidence from the CSU team Steven, especially not when the person you're demanding to hand it over to you is Tom Beaumont" She said, a firm tone to her voice as her hand came up, slicing through the air.

Steve stared at her for a moment before he raised a questioning eyebrow at her.

"I've got no idea who that is?" He responded blankly.

"I'm well aware of that." She said on a sigh before meeting his gaze again. "Tom Beaumont is the head of the CSU cyber division. He and his team deal with all the cyber evidence from a crime scene, He's very good at his job, hence why Ryan recruited him, but he's also very fastidious so trying to demand something from him is the equivalent of someone trying to demand that you give them something in regards to a case which is ours"

"Ah" Steve said, finally understanding where she was coming from.

"Exactly, ah is the right word since we both already know that you will never willingly give anything over to someone who isn't a member of the team. Tom is pretty much you, just without the SEAL training, unfortunately you're now firmly in his bad books which may cause issues for us. I'll do my best to smooth it out with him but please Steve, for the sake of my own sanity, try to remember that you are not in the active Navy anymore and that things are done differently here." Danni pointed out to him, an undercurrent of pleading to her voice as she shook of her head.

For a moment Steve stared at her before giving into the urge growing inside of him and reached out, dropping his hand on her slim shoulder and squeezing down.

"I'll try and remember that." He told her, feeling her shoulder's rise and fall beneath his grip.

"I suppose that's all I can really ask for." She admitted, glancing over to the side towards where Tom was now standing, no doubt her mind already running over the ways she could deal with the incident and get Steve off of the other man's bad list.

It warmed Steve, making him wonder when the last time someone had gone out of their way to help him. He swallowed as his thoughts immediately landed on Freddie Hart and the sacrifice he made for Steve.

"Steve? Are you okay? You're hurting me."

Steve blinked, Danni's voice cutting through the fog in his head, he glanced at her, immediately letting go of her shoulder realising that he had been gripping down hard enough to cause her pain.

"Danni I'm sorry, I…" He stopped and gave her a small shrug instead, noticing the way her eyes softened even as her hand came up to rub absently at her shoulder.

"It's fine" She assured him softly.

Steve swallowed before looking away for a second, his mind grasping for a change in subject.

"You say that this Tom is hard to sway when it comes to work but I'm guessing you're actually wrong there Danni" He stated, looking back at her, she searched his eyes for a split second before clearly deciding to play along, something which he found himself pathetically grateful for. There was something about his new partner which made him want to confess everything, but he knew that now wasn't the time or the place.

"Am I indeed?" She asked. "I'm curious now, how did you come to that conclusion after little more than a few moments in his presence?"

"Because of what happened within those few minutes." He countered. "You Danni, managed to get him to reverse his decision and to give us what we needed, so clearly it can happen it just depends entirely on who is going the asking. I'm beginning to think that you have the magic touch when it comes to other departments Danno." He stated, his mouth curling up into a smile when she rolled her eyes at the comment, a slight flush of pink staining her cheekbones in a way that Steve found strangely endearing, he pushed the thought away before changing the subject. "What did you and Kono find out from the witness earlier? Anything which we can use or is he just another dead end like all the other leads we've had so far?" He queried, crossing his arms as he looked away from her, his eyes moving across the busy scene, lingering on the charred exterior of the house.

"It's not another dead end, not this time." She told him a tinge of satisfaction coming to her voice. "We showed him a photograph which Toast sent me on my cell phone and Mr Baxter was able to ID the person in the photograph as the man who saw arguing with the Chens last night after they had been bailed. He also said that he was seen him at the house before so there's a good chance that he may actually have owned the house, it's likely that he purchased under an alias as a precaution in case it was ever found so it couldn't be linked to him. He would have had to have supply the estate agent or landlord with some form of ID, if we can contact them and get a copy of the ID from their records then we can use the attached photo to it and run it through the database to see if the photo is linked to any other alias out there and hopefully any properties the alias own, though there is obviously a good chance that Jack and Toast have already done it." She admitted with a smile of her own.

"That's good thinking partner, Kono is still here right?" He asked, waiting until she nodded before continuing. "Good, can you head over to her and ask her to" His words ended abruptly when his cell phone began ringing. He held his finger up at her, asking her to wait while he fished out the handset from his pocket and answered the call with a curt. "This is McGarrett."

"Hey Steve, it's Chin. Just wanted to let you know that Jack has made a breakthrough with the Chen's laptop which he took from the crime scene earlier. We've got a name for the man who we think is responsible for the fires." He announced, the tone to his voice making it clear that he was grinning in satisfaction.

"How did he make the connection? What is the name we have?" Steve demanded, automatically reaching out and grabbing Danni's elbow to stop her from moving away from him.

"Give me a moment Steve, it's probably just easier for me to put you on loudspeaker so you and Jack can speak as well." Chin stated, Steve waited impatiently, letting go of Danni when she clearly took the hint and move to his side, her head tilted to one side as though she was trying to listen into the conversation. When Chin spoke again, his voice sounded further away. "Okay Steve, you're now on loudspeaker with me, Jack and Toast."

"O'Connor. Chin said that you've managed to find something on the Chen's laptop?" Steve stated, his eyes sliding over to Danni's face taking in the serious, almost intent look on her face. For a moment Steve was tempted to put the call onto loudspeaker on their end as well so Danni could hear the full call but he resisted the impulse. They were too out in the open where they were standing and the last thing, he wanted was to give anyone who may be listening in, details of the case, including the fact they were closing in on a suspect. He blinked when Jack spoke, his voice coming across as calm and steady.

"Yeah, it looks like we've finally got lucky Steve. Rita Chen kept her email account logged in so once I was into the computer, I could easily read her email. Most of it is pretty normal, the usual junk mail and offers from shops but there's been regular emails from a man and giving the language used I would say that there was a lot more going on between the two of them then mere friendship. If I dig deeper than I should be able to find evidence that they were lovers." Jack stated.

"So, that would explain how she always knew where to go." Steve said slowly.

"Definitely and she was also well aware of what he was doing." Jack added. "They use a code in the email but it's pretty clear what it's relating to. I think they also the question we had about how he found his victims; it looks like it was Rita who was doing the initial recon for him and then flagging them up to him once she was sure that they fitted his demands."

"I doubt she would have had any problems manage it either." Chin commented thoughtfully. "We already know that she was part time at her job which would leave her plenty of free time to scope things out. That added to the fact that she was pretty and female probably meant that most people didn't view her as a threat and would give her little more than a passing glance."

"Have we've been able to find any information about how they might have met or how long they've known each other?" Steve asked, looking towards Danni when she reached out and placed her hand on his arm, giving him a look which told him without a word that she wanted to know exactly what was happening, her held up his hand to her, giving her a look of his own and mouthing the word patience to her, a smirk coming to his face when she rolled her eyes at him before he focused back on the call.

"We won't be able to answer those questions until we've gone through both of their backgrounds but I would think that their paths have crossed before now." Jack told him. "Toast is here as well so we can start now going through their lives and seeing what we can find."

"What is the name?" Steve demanded quickly before Chin could end the call.

"It's Terry Barclay." Chin answered. "I'll call you again if we find anything further which we can use."

"Good, Danni and I are going head back to headquarters, Kono is staying at the scene with Detective Lee at the moment to finish things up and then she'll join us as well, you can fill us in on things once we're back." Steve told the native man before he ended the call and looked towards his partner. "Lets head to the car, I don't want to fill you in out in the open like this." He told her, not surprised to see the look of understanding coming to her face.

He blinked as she stepped into his personal space, her eyes fixed on his face as she suddenly reached into his pocket and pulled out her car keys, flashing him a grin as she took a step back.

"In that case, let's get going then, I'll meet you at the car while you tell Kono that she's staying here." Danni told him before she turned and headed across the wet ground towards the car. Steve shook his head, glancing around him before he spotted Kono standing beside Detective Lee, he moved towards the pair of them and stopped beside her.

"Hey Boss, what's up, are we heading off now?" She asked.

"Danni and I are." He corrected. "I need you and Lee to stay here at the scene for the time being as a precaution. O'Connor drove you, down right?" He asked her.

"He did" She said with a slight frown.

"I can give you a ride back Kono" Lee interjected with a smile at her. "I doubt we'll be here longer than an hour, we just need to make sure we are available for the time being, right Commander?" He asked Steve who nodded at him.

"An hour is fine, when you're done then call and I'll let you know where to go." He nodded at the two of them again before turning and heading back to the car, making a huffing sound when he realised that Danni had taken the opportunity to slip into the driver's seat.

He moved around the car and pulled the passenger seat open, lowering him into it and shutting the door behind him, his eyes already noticing the smile on Danni's face as she turned the key into the ignition and pulled away from the kerb.

"So, tell me then what Jack and Chin have found out?" She asked the minute he had his seatbelt on.

"It looks like the Arsonist is a man who is called Terry Barclay. O'Connor managed to access Rita Chen's emails and it appears that she and Terry were having an affair together and communicated with one another via email." Steve answered her as he leaned back in his seat, taking the opportunity to watch her as she drove, a thoughtful look on her face as she clearly thought through what he had told her.

"There's a good chance that it wasn't an affair and that the husband was aware of what was going on. He was at two of the crime scenes then, maybe he decided that being able to view that was worth his wife sleeping with someone else. Stranger things have happened after all." She commented.

"You might be right; it may also be the case that Rita kept it hidden and merely said a friend was giving her the information and he loved her enough not to question it. The others are doing a background check on them both, focusing on finding a link between them so one way or another we should find out."

"So, his name is Terry Barclay." Danni remarked with a shake of her head, her hands tightening on the steering wheel.

"We've got him now Danni." Steve said with a grin which faded when she shot him an almost sombre look.

"We haven't got him yet Steve, I won't be celebrating until he's behind bar." She told him quietly searching his eyes before she turned and focused her attention back on the road.

Steve sighed, even as he nodded at her wisdom.

There were still too many loose ends which they needed to clear up first before they could go and get their man.
