Everyone was completely still. Slowly, they shifted their gazes to Elphaba, who had gone rigid in Fiyero's arms. No one spoke; no one dared. They all just looked at Elphaba, wondering how she would react.

Elphaba sat on the bed, wrapped protectively in Fiyero's arms, completely unaware of her surroundings. She was faintly aware of someone's arms, probably Fiyero's, slowly tightening their grip around her. She quickly shuddered away as the news came crashing down on her.

"Elphie?" Galinda's voice snapped her out of her trance. "Do you want…"

"N-No," Elphaba said, shaking her head. "I… I need some time alone."

"Okay, Elphie." Galinda gently kissed her best friend's forehead and walked out. Everyone else followed her, except for Fiyero.

Fiyero gently wrapped his girlfriend in his arms and kissed her forehead. "Fae…"

"Go away," the green girl whispered, tears forming in her eyes and sliding down her cheek as she tried to twist out of Fiyero's arms.

"Fae, I'm so…"

"I said go away!" Elphaba cried, jerking away from her boyfriend and collapsing onto the pillows.

Fiyero stepped back and watched, his heart twisting in pain, as Elphaba cried into the pillows. Once he sensed she was finished, he gently sat back down and pulled her into his arms.

"Y-Yero?" Elphaba whispered.

"I knew you didn't really want me to go away," Fiyero said, stroking her cheek.

"I… I'm sorry for yelling at you."

"Don't be. It's alright."

Elphaba leaned her head against Fiyero's shoulders, feeling safe in his arms. "Yero?"

"Yes?"

Elphaba took a deep breath before continuing. "If you… if you want to stop…"

"Stop what?"

"Our relationship. If you want out, I understand and I-"

"Whoa, wait, what? Fae, what gave you that idea?" Fiyero gasped, gently pulling away from Elphaba.

Elphaba twirled a section of her hair around her finger. "I… I understand that if you leave me and…"

"Fae," Fiyero said, stopping Elphaba's rant with a kiss. "I would never leave you."

Elphaba looked down. "I know you are expected to produce an heir, and I… I can't give you that."

"I don't care about that, Fae," Fiyero said softly. "I would marry you whether we could have children or not. Plus, the doctor said there was a chance."

"A very high chance," Elphaba corrected. "That's basically the same thing as saying 'never'."

"Well, then I wouldn't have to share you. I would be quite happy having you all to myself."

A small smile played on the ends of Elphaba's lips as she snuggled closer to Fiyero.

"Fae?"

"Yeah?"

"Did you want kids?"

Elphaba thought for a moment. "Well… I've never really thought about it. I mean, I've never pictured myself as a mother. I probably wouldn't even make a good one."

"What makes you think that?"

"I'm blind, Fiyero," Elphaba said dryly.

"So? That doesn't mean you wouldn't make a great mother."

Elphaba shrugged and turned away from Fiyero.

"Hey," the prince whispered, pulling Elphaba back. "You would make a great mother. And we could always adopt."

"But… you need a legitimate, blood heir."

"I'll handle that law later," Fiyero said, waving it off as he held Elphaba against him. "And we can always try. I mean, he did say 'chance'."

"And… what if it doesn't work?"

"Like I said, we go to Plan A."

"You mean Plan B."

"'Adoption' doesn't begin with 'B', Fae," Fiyero said, rolling his eyes.

Elphaba chuckled lightly at her boyfriend's logic. "Yero?"

"Yes?"

"You would marry me?"

"Of course," Fiyero smiled, pulling Elphaba closer to him and wagging his eyebrow. "Unless you want to…"

"Don't even go there!" Elphaba interrupted, jabbing Fiyero in the ribs with her elbow.

"And we're back to the ribs," Fiyero whimpered, rubbing his side. "Geez, Fae."

"But… seriously. You want to marry me?"

"Yes. Do you want to marry me?"

"I… I've never really thought about marriage. Or my future, for that matter," Elphaba said thoughtfully. "And… we're only in our first year of college. We have our whole lives ahead of us."

"We wouldn't get married right this minute. Plus, Galinda would kill both of us if she didn't get to help you pick out your wedding gown."

Elphaba chuckled. "I can't imagine my life without you, Yero."

"I can't imagine mine without you, Fae. And I will always love you, children or not."

"I love you, too, Yero. And, to answer your question… yes."

"Yes, you want to marry me?"

"Yes." A pause. "Was that a proposal?"

"I don't know," Fiyero said mysteriously as he helped Elphaba to the edge of the bed and got down on one knee. "You tell me."

"Yero, what are you doing?" Elphaba asked, sensing his movements.

"I'm doing this the correct way, 'cause Oz help me if Galinda found out I didn't do this properly. Will you, Elphaba Melena Thropp, do me the greatest pleasure of becoming my wife?"

Elphaba smiled and nodded furiously, tears filling her eyes. Fiyero smiled as he sat back down on the bed, locking his now-fiancée in a passionate kiss. They were so lost in the moment that they didn't notice Galinda open the door and step inside, staring at the couple with wide eyes.

"You know," she started. "Normally, I would have told you two to 'get a room', but… um… never mind."

Fiyero and Elphaba immediately pulled away. Elphaba looked down as a heavy blush spread across her face. Fiyero had an equally heavy blush as he stared up at the blonde.

"Geez, you guys were kissing each other's faces off like Fiyero got down on one knee and proposed. Wait… FIFI PROPOSED?!"

"Again, Glin, a little bit louder. I don't think they heard you on the moon," Elphaba deadpanned.

"Shut up, Elphie! Fifi proposed? Fifi proposed! Oh my Oz, this is so Oztastic!" the bubbly blonde giggled, clapping her hands together as she jumped up and down. "So, when is the big day? What type of flowers are you having? Can I be a bridesmaid?"

"Slow down, Glin," Elphaba said, playfully shaking her head at her friend's level of perkiness.

"We're not getting married until after graduation," Fiyero explained.

Galinda stopped jumping around. "But… but that's three years away," she pouted.

"We know," Elphaba said dryly.

"You two are impossible!" Galinda huffed, waving a dismissive hand and walking out.

"I don't know how you room with that girl, Fae," Fiyero smiled.

"I HEARD THAT!" Galinda shouted from the other side of the door.

"Neither do I," Elphaba chuckled.

"I HEARD THAT, TOO!"

After three more days in the hospital, Elphaba was released to go back to Shiz, with orders to not move around too much and to take a special pill twice a day for the next week. The green girl was more than thrilled to leave the room she was confined to for three weeks. Despite her protests, she was forced into a wheelchair and wheeled outside into the fresh air. She managed to talk Fiyero into letting her walk to the carriage, after the nurse said it was okay for her to walk.

"Goodbye, Father," Elphaba smiled, giving her father a hug.

"Goodbye, Fabala. Take care of yourself," Frex said, kissing her forehead.

"I will," Elphaba smiled as she heard her father climb into the carriage and drive away.

"Are you feeling alright, Fabala?" Nessa asked, taking her sister's hand.

"I'm fine, Nessie," the green girl smiled. "It feels nice to get some fresh air."

Fiyero helped Elphaba into the carriage while Galinda and Boq helped Nessa. Once all five of them were safely seated in the carriage, they sped off down the road back to Shiz.

"It feels so good to be back," Galinda smiled as she opened their dorm room.

"It does," Elphaba agreed tiredly.

"Elphie, are you alright?"

"Fine, Glin. Just a bit tired," Elphaba whispered, feeling her back to her bed and sitting down.

"Are you hungry? I can run and get dinner and bring it back."

Elphaba shook her head. "No, thank you. I'll just go to bed early." The green girl slowly rose to her feet and made her way over to her dresser. Grabbing her nightclothes, she slid her hand against the wall, searching for the bathroom door. Locating it, she slipped inside and quickly changed.

"Goodnight," Elphaba whispered as she climbed into bed.

"Goodnight, Elphie," Galinda smiled, tying her hair into a ponytail before climbing into bed and drifting off to sleep.

It was only a few hours later that Galinda was awoken by the sound of a soft whisper skipping through the air into her ears.

"Glin?"

Galinda peeked one eye open and, frowning, went back to sheep. "Elphie, you know the rules. If the sun's not up, I don't have to be," she muttered, half asleep, as she turned away from her roommate.

"Glin? Galinda, no!"

"No negatives before six o'clock," Galinda muttered.

A thud and Galinda shot up and turned towards her roommate's bed, noticing that it was empty. "Elphie!" Jumping up and shuffling into her fuzzy, pink slippers, she hurried over to Elphaba's bed.

Elphaba had fallen out of bed, hopelessly tangled in her bed sheets as she fought against the nightmare raging through her mind. "No! Fiyero, Galinda, please! No!"

"Elphie! Elphie, wake up!" Galinda exclaimed, shaking her roommate's arm.

"Fiyero, I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry, Yero. Please don't leave me!"

"Elphaba, wake up, please! You're starting to scare me! Please wake up! It's just a dream!"

Elphaba's eyes flew open. Feeling a hand on her shoulder, she jerked away, tears streaming down her face.

"Elphie, it's just me," Galinda said, pulling the green girl close.

Sobbing, Elphaba threw her arms around the blonde and buried her face in her shoulder.

"It's okay, Elphie," Galinda whispered soothingly. "It was just a dream. Do you want to talk about it?"

She felt the green girl shake her head against her shoulder.

"You might feel better if you do."

Slowly, Elphaba's sobs died down to a point where Galinda would actually be able to understand what she was saying. "F-Fiyero… he… he left me b-b-because I c-can't… can't give him an… heir. A-And… he m-married you and t-told me he n-n-never… never wanted t-to see me again," she stuttered through her tears.

"Oh, Elphie," Galinda whispered, brushing Elphaba's hair away from her face. "I would never do that to you. Fiyero would never leave you. It was just a dream."

"I want children," Elphaba whispered. Her voice was so soft that Galinda almost didn't hear her. "I really, really want to have children with Fiyero. And I… I can't."

"It'll be okay, Elphie," Galinda whispered, not knowing what else to say to her best friend. She had to say something, but what? "I'm sorry."

"No. Don't. It's not your fault," Elphaba said, pulling herself together.

"I'm sorry that you're upset. I wish there was something I could do to help. I just feel so… useless, watching you go through all this and knowing there's nothing I can do to help."

Elphaba's fingers slid across the soft carpet until they bumped into Galinda's hand. Smiling, she grasped her hand and squeezed it. "Just you being here… with me… is enough."

Galinda wiped away the tear that was streaming down her cheek and hugged her emerald friend. "I'll always be here for you, Elphie."

"Thank you, Glin. And I'll always be here for you, too."
