Chapter 55
Doctor Lennox
"Good afternoon, Doctor Lennox."
"Good afternoon, Nurse Myers." I replied, smiling at the African-American woman. "How's your day?"
"Great, thank you for asking." Nurse Myers answered. She snapped her fingers and reached down to grab something from the drawer. "Oh, could you give this to Doctor Ackermann?" She handed me a couple of cream-colored files.
I nodded my head, taking the files off her hands. "Of course. Have a good day, Nurse Myers." I walked away, waving my hand at the nurse.
"You too, doctor!" I heard her say.
I walked further down the hall, carrying the files.
"Doctor Lennox! Doctor Lennox!"
I stopped on my tracks, turning to stand sideways. A smile appeared on my lips when a familiar little girl ran towards me. I kneeled down and the girl wrapped her arms around my neck. I gave a short laugh, hugging the girl back. A giggle was heard. I looked up to see a beautiful woman with a large bump on her stomach. She placed her hand on it as a radiant smile appeared on her lips. Her dark-brown locks were tied in low ponytail, draped over her left shoulder as her emerald eyes shined from under the frameless glasses.
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Walker. Are you here for your monthly checkup?" I asked, looking up to the woman.
She smiled, nodding her head. "Yes, I think the baby's getting more excited to meet his or her new mommy. Isn't that right, Celia?" she asked her five year-old daughter who was standing in front of me.
Celia giggled and walk over to her mother's side, placing her hands on top of Mrs. Walker's stomach. "Uh-huh! I gonna be big sis!" she chirped happily, turning back to face me as I stood up with the same smile.
"I'm sure you're going to be a good big sister to your new little brother or sister, Celia." I smiled, placing my hand on top of her head. "Oh? It looks like you've grown an inch since your last visit."
"Eh?! Really?!" Celia exclaim in disbelief as her eyes sparkles with excitement. I nodded my head, chuckling at her enthusiasm. "Mommy, did you hear? I grew! I'm gonna be big girl now!" she said happily.
Mrs. Walker chuckled, taking her daughter's hand in hers. "Yes, I can see that also, but we should be going. Doctor Connor is waiting for Mommy so she could have her monthly checkup." She said, smiling.
I nodded my head in agreement. "Well then, I shouldn't keep you standing here. Have a good day, Mrs. Walker. Goodbye Celia." I waved my hand at the two, Celia waved back.
"Goodbye, Doctor Lennox!"
I let out a soft sigh before turning on my heels, going to the opposite direction of Celia and her mother. The warm sunlight shined through the numerous floor-to-ceiling windows and the smell of disinfectants lingers in the air. I walked down the halls towards my attending-physician's office.
It was my fifth month here as a resident at St. Carol's Hospital, Washington D.C.
I've passed the acceleration program and continued to Medical School at Wurzburg University. I've graduated just five months ago and now, I'm working as a resident under Doctor Beatrice Carmen, a specialist in Child's Neurology. And Doctor Andy Ackermann, a pediatrician who has been working at the hospital for over twenty years. I was allowed to make some medical decision, but I have to run major decisions with Doctor Ackermann and Doctor Carmen.
Sometimes, I also work under Ratchet as a doctor at NEST. The reason I've picked St. Carol's was because of Dad. He told me to pick a hospital that was not far from the headquarters so I could keep in contact. It was a half an hour drive from here, if there's no traffic. While I was still studying in Germany, NEST moved to Washington because of the Decepticons' absent after the events at Egypt. Their target was now to investigate alien presences around the globe. Although, I preferred Diego Garcia better. It was not crowded as Washington.
Three years have passed and a lot of things have happened. Yvonne graduated and became her family's doctor. She got married two years ago with Brook and now, they have a little healthy baby girl. Thundercracker remains as the Aachen's guardian at Germany, frequently sending reports back to Optimus about Decepticon activity up at Europe. As for Smokescreen, he came back with me to America.
I live near Samuel and Mikaela's apartment. They were still dating and I'm pretty sure they would someday get married. Around a week ago, Samuel graduated from Princeton University. He's currently jobless at the moment, but he's looking for one. They both moved away from Tranquility because it would be safer to be near the Autobots if there's a Decepticon attack. From Mikaela's stories, her father didn't take the news of her only baby girl living with a boy very well. Nonetheless, he agreed because Mikaela says that I would be 'living near' them, which was a lie, but technically true.
Sometimes, Dad and Robert stays over at my apartment if they aren't too busy with NEST business. Dad was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel around a year ago, the same year when NEST moved. We both lived in Washington while Mom and Annabelle are still in Tranquility. Mom didn't want to move out of her cozy home, saying that the house held so many precious memories to her. Almost every day, we talked to Mom and Annabelle through video-chat.
NEST got more recruits and they were trained under Dad and Ironhide. Whenever I pass by the training room, the Weapon Specialist insisted that I join in on their workout, saying that I need some 'muscles' to fight in the fields. No matter how many times, I've told Ironhide that I'm a doctor, he just kept on insisting that I need to work out more. I mostly work in the Medical Bay, helping Ratchet, Jolt and Moonracer as the human medic.
As for the Autobots, nothing changed about them, other than a few of them getting newer models for their alt-modes, everything was pretty much the same. Every now and then, the younger Autobots would go on a pranking spree, pranking anyone they could find. I was once a victim of their prank. It was all fun and games at first, but when Ironhide and Ratchet comes in… Let's just say it didn't end pretty at all.
"Good afternoon, doctor." A nurse said as he stepped out of Doctor Ackermann's office.
"Good afternoon." I smiled at him and nodded in thanks when he kept the door open for me. I peered my head inside and the smell of disinfectant filled my nose. The warm sunlight went through the windows. A middle aged man sat behind his desk, reading over his patients' files. I knocked on the door twice, making him look up from his papers. "I'm sorry to disturb you, Doctor." I apologized.
Doctor Ackerman smiled. "It's alright. Did Nurse Myers give you anything?" he asked and I nodded my head. I walked towards his desk and handed him the file Nurse Myers gave me earlier. He took the file, giving a kind smile. "Thank you, Ms. Lennox." He thanked.
Doctor Ackerman is a man in his early fifties. He's kind towards children and would do anything to help them. He taught me a lot since I first came here.
"Is there anything you want me to do before I end my shift?" I asked.
The pediatrician shook his head. "No. No. I can take it from here. You can go home now, Ms. Lennox. Have a nice day." He answered back, glancing over to face me before burying his face to read over the files Nurse Myers gave him.
"Thank you doctor." I said before closing his door with a soft click.
I glanced over to the watch around my left wrist. It was six in the evening. A chuckled escaped my lips. I was supposed to be at NEST's base an hour ago. I can already imagine Ratchet's lecture to never be late. 'If you're not on time, what would happen when you have a patient who needs your aid?' is what he might say when I step foot in the Med Bay. A tired sighed came out before I went into the staff's longue.
The staff longue was unusually quiet. It was always filled with nurses and residents, but this time it was almost empty. There were a few inside the room, talking to each other or just taking a coffee break. They greeted me and I greeted back, sending a smile. I went to my locker and took my black messenger bag out, slipping my right arm through one of the shoulder straps. I closed my locker silently with a small click.
I walked down the busy hallway. Nurses and patients walking from the west wing to the east and vice versa. I walked to the back of the hospital, where the staffs parked their car. A metallic blue-colored Honda Civic sat underneath a shady tree. The shiny metal reflected the light from the streetlight behind it. I pulled out the keys, pressing a button and a beep echoed in the silent parking lot. I opened the driver's door, slid inside the interior, closing the door while doing so.
I start the car and the engine rumbles to life. I placed my bag on the passenger seat as I put the seatbelt on. My hands gripped the steering wheel. My eyes were averted to the logo on the middle of the steering wheel. It was an Autobot's symbol. It was the ordinary 'H' from Honda. My car isn't an Autobot or an ex-Decepticon. This was just an ordinary Honda Civic.
I bought the Honda a few months ago. Well, Dad was the one who paid it off, but I'm the one who picked it and pitch in a little. I realized that The Autobots were too busy to have a charge that they have to look after like a babysitter. One of the reasons NEST was moved here was because of the government. They could now keep an eye on the Autobots and NEST since this is where the White House is. The Autobots can't just freely drive around Washington, unless of course they're on patrol.
Samuel and I thought that buying a car would solve the problem. Samuel bought a 'collector's item' Datsun 510 sedan with black racing stripes, that somehow resemblance Bumblebee. I sometime give Samuel and Mikaela a ride, since the Datsun frequently break downs. Luckily, Mikaela's a mechanic. She works for a CEO who has an obsession with exotic cars.
I put the gear to D and drove out of the parking space. I admit, driving was hard. I envy the Autobots because they can drive while talking to us. There wasn't a traffic jam, so I guess that's a plus. I arrived at the gates of the Department of Health and Human Services. I was stopped by a fully armed NEST soldier. I rolled my window down and showed them my NEST i.d. The one who checked my i.d gave a salute before telling the others to open the gates.
"Welcome back to NEST, Doctor Lennox."

I walked inside the large hangar. Many people were walking around, checking over the weapons and computers. NEST, specifically Wheeljack and Perceptor, have invented energon detectors to spread it around the planet. It helps NEST to detect Decepticons or any incoming Autobots. They just have set it around Amerika as for the other countries, I don't really know. I walked pass by the large wooden boxes that has the label 'fragile' and 'top secret', probably the energon detectors being shipped abroad.
"Jen! There you are!" I heard Wheeljack called.
I turned around to face him. "Yes? Is there something you need Wheeljack?"
"Well, no… not me, but Ratchet has been looking for you. He said that if I found you, I should tell you that he wants you in Med Bay as soon as possible." The scientist said, his optics shifting up and down.
I nodded, "Alright, thank you Wheeljack. By the way, have you seen Barricade or Prowl? I think the Chevy twins are up to something." I whispered the last part and averted my eyes to look at the sneaking twins.
Wheeljack laughed. "I think Barricade's on his patrol, but I'll inform Prowl of your finding."
"Thank you, Wheeljack."
"Oh! Before you leave, would you like to try out my latest invention?" His holoform appeared in front of me with a weird looking metal glove in his hands. I checked over it and raised an eyebrow. Well, at least he got the design. He proudly placed the glove on his right hand, patting it a few times. "This is a grapple-hook glove. It allows you to hook onto things! Watch!" he fired the hook to the ceiling, but it didn't quite get hook on the ceiling. It returned back to the ground with a loud clang echoing inside the hangar. "I guess I have to work on a few kinks." He laughed sheepishly.
I gave a short laugh. "I'm sure it would turn out great." I patting his shoulder before walking away, waving my hand in the air. "I'll see you later, Wheeljack." I said over my shoulder.
"Right, right, see you later chap!" he said in his British accent.
I continue my way down the large hall. The sound of heavy footsteps was heard from the training room. No doubt that it was Ironhide training the new recruits. I tried my best to walk silently across the large door, but sometimes Ironhide's nose is just too sensitive. He can sense anyone and anybot, ether it was just his sensors getting frequent updates or was it just because he has a sixth sense.
"This is not how you deal with a headshot!" Ironhide shouted at the new recruits. He crossed his arms across his chest plates, his optic ridges furrowed down in a grumpy way. Beside him was Bumblebee who has his battle mask on and two soldiers in front of him with guns. I guess that the Weapon Specialist was teaching the soldiers how to do a head shot and he's using Bumblebee as the Decepticon. The scout whined at Ironhide and his door wings dropped in disappointment. Ironhide snorted at the yellow mech. "Mech up, Bee. This is only the twentieth try." He huffed out.
Dad shook his head and patted Ironhide's leg. "Alright guys, I'm going to show you one more time." he held up one finger and held his gun in the right position. He ran towards Bumblebee and did a couple of dodge roll before completely stopping in front of the yellow scout, his gun pointed directly at Bumblebee's helm. "This is how you do it." He said, standing back up as he looked at his subordinates. "Now you try." He pointed to a man standing in front.
Ironhide shook his head. "The new recruits are pathetic and wimpy." He said in a gruff tone.
Dad sighed, "We'll fix 'em up. They have potential, 'Hide. We have plenty of time to train 'em to top class NEST soldiers." He laughed a little.
The black mech vented. "I hope you're right." He mumbled under his breath. He lifted his helm up and turned to me when I was half-way across. "Jen, you're late. You missed out on training." He said with a grunt.
I laughed nervously. "Sorry… got caught up with work." I reasoned as Dad gave me a hug. "I hope I didn't miss out too much." I added, trying to make Ironhide feel a lot less grumpy with the new recruits.
Dad laughed, patting my back. "Trust me, you missed out a lot." He grinned.
Gee, thanks for the help Dad.
Ironhide nodded his helm. "Lennox is right. You missed out a lot, youngling. I would like to punish you by making you run laps around the base, but Ratchet is looking for you. I thought it be best if I don't interfere with Ratchet and his wrenches from the pit." The black mech said, smirking.
I gave a look to him. Ironhide wasn't good at making jokes, ever. Every time he did try to make a funny, he failed. Miserably. People always ended up taking him seriously even though he meant his words to be a joke.
"Jen… nice to see you!" Bumblebee chirped happily.
Ironhide hit Bumblebee's helm. "Dumb-aft! Ratchet specifically told you not to over use your voice! Who knows what he'll do if he finds out you've been using it a lot." He shook his helm, a servo on his the bridge of his nose.
"Sorry…" Bumblebee apologized through the radio. He turned to me and balled his servo into a fist, reaching it out for me.
I smiled and did the same, fist-bumping. "Nice to see you too, Bumblebee. But Ironhide and Ratchet are right, you shouldn't use your voice yet." I chided.
The scout's door wings lowered a little and he lowered his head, as if he was a child being scolded by his mother. "Baby… I'm sorry." His radio played.
Dad snickered, "Alright, alright. Let's get back to training." He said, shooing both Ironhide and Bumblebee away to the new recruits. Ironhide growled at Dad while Bumblebee waved his servo. I waved back. "I'll see you after work, Jen." He smiled before jogging over to his team.
"Okay," I said, turning around on my head to head straight to the Med Bay without any more distractions. I can already imagine Ratchet's face and I regret doing that. The only thing deadlier that a Decepticon was a mad Autobot CMO. I quickened my pace, refusing to waste any more time. I had a feeling that he was getting impatient. The Med Bay door slid open with a hiss.
"You're late."
I took a deep breath. "I know and I'm sorry, Ratchet." I gave a hopeless smile as I walk towards the human clinic section. I placed my bag beside the chair and walked up the stairs to the platform. I stood by the railing, staring at the CMO and his assistant. "I'm here now, so what do you need?" I questioned.
Ratchet vented before his large servo held something out for me. I took the files from his servo and skimmed through the papers. It was the new recruits' health records. A total of forty six new recruits were listed. "These are the new recruits' health records. I want you to try and memorize them. I'm quite sure that they will be visiting the Med Bay soon after Ironhide's training are done." The medic said.
"Jolt and I have a meeting with Optimus. I'll leave the Med Bay to you." He continued.
I nodded my head. "Alright."
I turned around, walking back down to the lower ground while reading the data. "One more thing," I heard Ratchet began. I turned sideways to look at him, waiting for him to continue his sentence. "If you ever saw the slagging twins, tell them to get out before I throw them out. And if they try to ever so set up a prank in my Med Bay again, I will put their afts on the wall." He threatened.
"Sure, sure," I laughed.
The Med Bay door closed with a hiss. I sat on the comfy chair and began to read over the new recruits' health records. The first fifteen seemed healthy, no allergies or anything. I read the sixteenth one and paused when I heard the doors hissed opened. I spun around in the chair and saw that it was the Terror Twins. I stood up and went over to water dispenser.
"You know, Ratchet forbids you to enter the Med Bay." I said with my back turned as I pressed the dispenser.
I heard a chuckle. "But that would mean we can't see our favorite human." A strong pair of arms wrapped around my shoulder. I glanced up and saw that it was Sunstreaker's holoform, smirking down at me. He kissed my temple and I smiled. I took the glass full of water away from the water dispenser and pry Sunstreaker's arm off. I walked back to the chair, taking a sip from the glass. "So, what's up?" Sideswipe asked, peering over my shoulder to look at the files.
I began reading again. "I'm just reading the new recruits' health records. Ratchet wanted to make sure that I'm prepared to treat them."
Sideswipe frowned. "These are all males."
"So?" I raised an eyebrow. "Your point?"
"They're the male species of your kind." Sunstreaker continued.
"…I know that." I said and turned to face the twins. I crossed my arms. "Alright, spill. What did you do this time?" I asked.
Sideswipe grinned. "You know us too well." He said, puffing his chest out proudly. "We set up a little prank over at the Training room. Let's just say the new recruits will never forget their first day." He smiled.
Suddenly, a loud 'boom' was heard. I abruptly stood up at the sound. The twins' holoform were laughing uncomfortably as they held onto each other for support.
"FRAGGING TWINS!" Ironhide's voice could be heard from around the base.
I shook my head and sat back down, rubbing my temples. I don't understand why the twins kept on doing these pranks if they always get caught in the end.
I'm Doctor Jennifer Lennox and my life as a doctor has been full of surprises.
