In the Enchanted Forest...

"Killian! Killian, wake up!" The pirate groaned at the frantic words, blinking himself into consciousness, just in time to get hit in the face with a pillow.

"Oof… what the hell, love?" He scowled, but his sleepiness robbed his tone of the intended venom. He shoved the pillow away, sitting up to see Ruby practically tearing the room apart.

"It's not here…" she muttered frantically, almost to herself. "Did you put my cloak somewhere?" She looked up at him accusingly, and he shook his head. They'd been staying at the inn for a few nights, but last night had been the full moon, and Ruby had taken off to 'run'. Killian had enjoyed having the bed to himself, but not if it meant waking up to this.

"Why would I take your cloak?" He asked incredulously, sure, it was a lovely shade of scarlet, but hardly his style. "It has to be here somewhere… did you take it out running with you?

"No!" Ruby rolled her eyes, and although Killian didn't quite understand her distress, he could tell that the possibility of having lost her cloak was a pretty big deal to her. Climbing out of bed, he pulled on his shirt. "I left it here, Killian, I remember hanging it on the back of the door. And now… it's just gone." Her tone in the second half of that sentence was so dejected, sorrow permeating her words to the point that even Killian, stone cold pirate that he liked to think of himself as, found himself feeling sad. "You're sure you didn't move it?" He shook his head. "And you were here all night?" She raised her eyebrows at him, and he tilted his head from side to side, grimacing slightly. "Where did you go?!" She demanded.

"Downstairs, for a drink." At her incredulous look, he shrugged defensively. "I was having trouble sleeping! Besides, I didn't know I had to babysit your cloak."

"You realize this means someone broke into our room while you were drinking yourself into a stupor, and you didn't even notice." She rolled her eyes at him, and Killian glanced away, guilt in his eyes.

"Did they take anything else?" He asked, looking around. He'd had their money on him, so it wasn't as though they'd been robbed blind or anything, and they weren't carrying much of value to even be stolen. Killian figured that things could have been worse.

"They took my cloak! Isn't that bad enough?" She snapped at him, but Killian failed to see the gravity of that theft.

"We can always get you a new cloak." He pointed out, buttoning up his vest, but Ruby rolled her eyes, folding her arms over her chest.

"That cloak has extreme sentimental value." Killian blinked at her, raising an eyebrow. She sighed. "It's like your ship, okay? It means a lot to me."

"My ship has practical uses beyond its sentimental value." He pointed out, pulling on his jacket.

"So does my cloak!" Ruby protested. "It's enchanted, to keep me from… well, wolfing out. Without it, I won't be able to control when I change on the full moon."

Killian's eyes shot up at that. "Wait… so does that mean that you'll be a mindless killing machine on the full moon? Because I heard stories-" Ruby shook her head, interrupting him.

"No, no. I'll still be able to control the wolf when I change, that's not the issue. I just won't be able to be human at all. I guess it's not such a big deal, but…" She sighed, sinking down on the bed and picking at the blanket idly. "I've had it for so long. I mean… I'm Red Riding Hood, that's who I am, but… without the cloak…" she trailed off, and Hook paused, knowing exactly how she felt. It was how he felt about his ship, the one thing he'd always had, the one thing he could rely on, the thing he defined himself by.

He sighed, walking around the bed to stand in front of her. "All right, love, no need for tears. We'll track down your cloak, wherever it's gotten itself to."

"I'm not crying," Ruby looked up at him, her eyes dry, and he gave a tight-lipped smile in return.

"Now, now, sweetheart, there's no need to thank me with sexual favors, I'm honestly doing this out of the goodness of my heart." He teased dramatically, making Ruby scowl at him as she got to her feet. "Although if you insist, I'd hate to leave a woman feeling unsatisfied." He winked at her, and Ruby smacked him on the arm.

"Didn't you learn your lesson last night, pirate?"

"I'm afraid I've always been a very poor student." He sighed, shrugging as he collected his things and followed her to the door.

In Storybrooke...

Killian was on his way down to the diner when he heard the stomach-churning sound of someone emptying their guts coming from the ladies room, and he paused by the door. It was slightly ajar, just enough for him to recognize a certain shapely behind bent over in one of the stalls, and after a moment's consideration, he pushed the door open and went inside.

"All right, love?" He spoke more to alert her of his presence than to actually get an answer, reaching over with his hook to pull her hair back, collecting it loosely in his hand while she finished vomiting. He glanced away, although with his many years experience on a pirate ship, he was no stranger to seeing drunken men bring up their dinners.

She sat back and he let go of her soft, dark hair, pulling off a few pieces of toilet paper and handing it to her to wipe her mouth when she turned towards him. She gave him a slightly sad, but grateful look. "Thanks," she sighed.

"You all right? You still look a bit green." He asked, backing out of the stall but still looking at her with concern. She nodded wearily.

"Yeah… it's just morning sickness. Whale said it should go away soon." She shrugged, she knew that it was normal, but that didn't make it any fun at all. Killian quirked a concerned eyebrow at her, glancing at the clock on the wall.

"I don't know if you noticed, darling, but it's not morning…" Ruby smiled, giving his shoulder a shove as she pushed past him to rinse her mouth out in the sink. "It's not… I mean, there's nothing wrong with the baby, is there?" She looked up at him, drying her mouth, certain that she heard some real concern there. It was almost touching.

"No, there's nothing wrong with the baby. Don't worry, Whale's looking after us." She smiled, and the way she said it made something tighten uncomfortably in the pit of Killian's stomach, like he might be sick himself. "Killian… about the other night. I may have overreacted."

"Oh, you think?" He tilted his head at her, lifting an eyebrow. Ruby scowled.

"I blame the hormones." She shrugged it off. "Besides, you were being a real ass!" She pointed out, smacking him on the arm, and he scowled.

"Why do you have such a problem with me going after Emma?" He couldn't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, there were some lingering feelings there, despite her memory loss…

"It's not you going after Emma that bothers me. It's why." She quashed his hopes with a single sentence, and his scowl darkened. "Do you really care about her, or is she just another notch on your belt? Because Emma is my friend, so if you're just trying to get into her pants, it's going to be a problem." She folded her arms over her chest stubbornly while he fumbled for words.

"I do care about her," he insisted. It was true, he did feel something for Emma. They made a good team, there was no denying that, and she was certainly starting to trust him. It wasn't anything like what he felt for Milah, though… it wasn't love. Not yet, he hastily reminded himself. Emma was the one who had made him realize that he wanted that same feeling he'd had with Milah again, so it stood to reason that she'd be the one who could rekindle those feelings, right? And yet… it wasn't Emma that Killian thought about when he let his mind wander, looking down into Ruby's sea green eyes.

He opened his mouth to say something more, but with a pang, he remembered that he wasn't the one who had ended things. Ruby might not remember why she did it, hell, she didn't remember any of their time together, but it was her choice to leave. Killian respected that, even if the memory of her departure woke an ache in his chest that he'd been trying to fill since then.

"Good," Ruby said after a long moment, and Killian closed his mouth, giving a wordless nod. "Because if you're playing her, you're going to make a lot of people in this very small town, very angry. And I'd hate to see your pretty head on a pike, Killian." He recognized the sound of her teasing, despite her solemn expression, and grinned at her, pushing open the door and holding it for her.

"I'm touched to know you care, lovely." Ruby smiled indulgently as she walked past him, nearly bumping into Granny as she exited the bathroom, who looked at the both of them with scandalized eyes, then shook her head, brushing past them.

"I don't even want to know what you two were doing in there." She said dismissively, and Ruby and Killian both laughed as they made their way into the diner together.
