Lily woke the next morning to an empty bed. She slipped on jeans and a t-shirt and headed to the living room, where she found Sam and Dean on the sofa. They had the huge hunk of clay, still wrapped in cloth, sitting on her coffee table.
"What's goin' on, guys?"
"We're considering the best way to find out what's in this thing," Sam said.
"What have you got so far?"
"Bash it open with a hammer," Dean said.
"Well, that's delicate," Lily said.
"So far, it's all we have," Sam said.
"Alright. I've got some protective eyewear in the basement. Someone else can grab the hammer from the supply closet."
Sam grabbed the hammer, and Dean carried the clay, following Lily to the basement. They gathered around a table and put on the safety glasses.
Dean struck the clay block with the hammer, and lightning struck outside. Another hit, and more lightning, the accompanying thunder louder than before.
"That sound like somebody saying, 'No, wait. Stop,' to you?"
Sam and Lily both agreed that it did, but Dean shrugged and continued. Each blow of the hammer knocked off another chunk of clay. It also produced a crash of lightening and thunder. After the last piece of clay was loosened, Dean lifted up some sort of tablet. It was stone, and there markings on it.
Dean turned it over in his hands. "Sooo..."
"Yeah," Sam said, "no clue."
Dean held it up to Lily. "Thoughts?"
"Beats me," she said.
"Great," Dean said with frustration in his voice. "We still have no clue what Dick is after, even though we have it in our hands. Awesome."
"Look," Lily said, "why don't we put this somewhere safe and go get some food. We'll figure this out."
"Considering we were face to face with Dick Roman yesterday," Dean said, "I don't think we're far enough away to be going out to eat."
"We don't have to go out. I should have stuff here."
Lily fixed something eat while Sam sat on the sofa with his laptop and did some research. He was trying to find out what the markings on the tablet were. Dean sat in the kitchen, keeping Lily company. She soon heard the television in the living room come on. Sam was watching the news. She took the opportunity to talk to Dean.
"Hey," she whispered.
When Dean looked up, she motioned him over with a nod of her head. He walked over to her and leaned against the counter.
"When I was talking to Bobby the other night..."
"Yeah?"
"He seems to think we should tell Sam about us."
"Come on. He's gotta know by now. It's not like we're hiding anything."
"Yeah, that's what I said, but Bobby made a good point. He said Sam may know I love you, and he may have even figured out that you're in love with me, but he doesn't know that we've admitted it to each other."
"That's true."
"I think we should tell him."
"You're right. We should."
"No time like the present," Lily said. "If I learned anything from losing our baby, it's that there is always going to be something in the way. In our lives, there is never a perfect time to share news. We just have to do it."
Dean nodded, then pulled Lily's head toward him and kissed her forehead.
"Hey, Sam!" Dean shouted.
"Yeah?"
"Food, little brother! Come and get it!"
"Coming!"
Sam turned the television off and joined them in the kitchen at the table. Lily handed the guys their plates, then sat down with her own.
Sam started the conversation by telling them what he had been watching on the news. A freak lightning storm affected the entire continent, and every woman within a hundred miles who was in her last month of pregnancy went into labor. And it all happened around the time they busted the clay open.
"Look," Sam said, "we gotta take a minute, hole up somewhere safe, find out what we've got. Dick Roman must know we have this. He's gonna be looking for us."
"What's wrong with here?" Lily asked.
"You guys said Roman threatened you when we were at the hospital with Bobby. Dean, you said he knows who she is, right?"
"Right," Dean said.
"He can track us here. This is your cabin. It's too easy."
"Rufus' cabin, then?" Dean asked.
"Yeah, I think so."
"Alright. We'll head out after we eat," Dean said. He looked to Lily and she raised her eyebrows at him, slightly tilting her head toward Sam. Dean nodded.
"Hey, uh... Sammy."
"Yeah?"
"There's something we think you should know." He looked at Lily, causing Sam to look over at Lily.
"Is something wrong?"
"No, no... nothing's wrong."
"Just spit it out, Dean," Lily said.
"Yeah, dude, you're making me nervous."
"Okay, uhhh... Lily and I... we're in love."
Sam looked from Dean to Lily, then back again. "Seriously?"
"Seriously," Lily said.
"Since when? I mean, was it after you guys lost the baby?"
Lily looked down at the table, and Dean grabbed her hand, giving it a squeeze.
"Before, actually," Dean said. "She admitted her feelings for me right after the thing with Osiris." He looked over at Lily and smiled. "And I admitted it to her right before we met up again in Lily Dale, with the psychic thing."
"Right," Sam said. He remembered what had happened just before that with Amy. Neither of them wanted to bring it up. "So, why are you guys just telling me now?"
"Your hallucinations," Dean said. "I didn't wanna throw anything else at you."
"Dean, this isn't bad news."
"I know, but..."
He seemed be struggling for the right words, so Lily took over. "Dean thought that you might see yourself as a third wheel, under the circumstances. He didn't want you hiding how bad your hallucinations were, trying to keep us happy."
"That's crazy," Sam said.
"Is it?" Dean questioned. "You were already hiding how bad it really was."
Sam hung his head down a bit. Dean was right, and they all knew it.
"Okay," Sam said. "Maybe you're right... but this is really great news. I wish you would have told me sooner. Why tell me now?"
Lily bit her lip, and felt Dean squeeze her hand again. "I waited for the right time to tell Dean about the baby... and it never came. Then it was too late." She felt herself about to choke up, and tried to fight back the tears. "We just wanted to make sure you know."
"So, we're telling you," Dean said.
Sam looked at Dean. "You," he said, "are one lucky bastard."
"I know," Dean said, smiling at Lily.
"And you," Sam said, looking to Lily, "you were already like a sister. I guess this makes it a little more real."
Lily smiled at Sam, but they were interrupted by his phone ringing.
"It's Meg," he said before answering it.
Lily rolled her eyes and stood from the table. She started clearing the plates and cleaning up.
Castiel was awake. Sam put the phone on speaker so they could listen in. After they hung up, Dean mentioned the fact that Castiel woke up about the time they busted the tablet out. They decided to go to the hospital to get Castiel, Lily pulled Dean aside.
"I'm gonna stay here."
"What?"
"You go get Cas and bring him back, then we'll head to Montana."
"No way. You're not staying here alone. Not with that tablet."
"Dean..."
"Is this about Meg?"
"Yes, it's about Meg! I don't like her."
"I thought you said you would trust me with this?"
"I do. I just don't wanna be around her. Just the thought of her makes me angry."
"Sweetheart, we all have to go. Try not to let it get to you."
"Yeah, right."
"Come on. Pack up. We're going to get Cas. All of us."
