A/N: I think there's only going to be one more chapter after this and then that will be the end of this story. I'm getting a little teary eyed because this story was nothing more than a weird dream for me a while ago and the fact that it turned into a great story that I can look back and read over and over is something I never thought I would be able to do. I'm getting emotional and stupid so I'll just shut up and let you all read. ENJOY! :D
After we drove away from the safety camp and from Kendall, I couldn't help but cry for who knows how long. No matter what I did, I couldn't help but think about him. I tried to sleep and I dreamt about him. I played with Hannah and I thought about how much he's come to love her. Jo would try to console me by telling me how skilled Kendall is but it didn't help. There were thousands of zombies that followed him. I knew he was skilled but he's only human and he was going to save a child, who might not even be alive.
As we crossed the state line into Arizona, James stopped the car in the middle of a small neighborhood. He and Logan went out to collect information as Camille climbed out of the back with Bell. There was a knock on my window and I knew it was her. I didn't bother turning to her and she opened the door.
"How's he holding up?" Camille asked Jo as I felt her rub my back.
"Not good, he just stopped crying. What about Bell?"
"She whimpered for a while before she just laid down and got quiet." I heard someone yell something about a dog and sat up.
"Where's Bell?" I asked Camille and she looked down and gasped. I pushed past her as I jumped out of the car. I saw Bell running down the road we just came down. I was not loosing anyone else. I sprinted past her and as I was coming up past James he looked like he was about to stop me.
"Carlo-"
"No, I'm not leaving without her!" He just nodded his head and tossed me his gun. I caught it and continued chasing after her, calling her name as the wind blew. As she turned the corner, I looked up and I saw someone in the distance and slowed down.
"No, fucking way." I said, smiling. My smile slowly faded when I realized there was really no way he would be able to walk this distance and keep up with us. Bell kept on running so I had to start chasing after her again.
Who on Earth would be walking these road?
How are they even alive?
Bell slowed down enough for me to catch up to her and I think she realized that it wasn't Kendall.
"It's not him, girl. I miss him too." I told her as she whimpered.
"Hello?" I said to the person and they didn't respond. Bell laid down on the ground and I think she was giving up.
"Come on, girl. You need to stand up." She stood up quicker than I expected and she looked alert. I looked in the same direction as her and saw that the person was running towards us. I gasped when I realized they were a zombie. I aimed my gun at it and pulled the trigger as it got close enough for me to confirm it was a zombie.
"I'm so fucking sick of these fucking things!" I screamed as the zombie hit the ground.
"Come on, Bell." I said, snapping my fingers. She stayed in her alert position and I grabbed her by her collar, pulling on it.
When she growled, I pulled my hand away before I realized she wasn't growling at me. I gasped when I heard a bunch of groaning before I saw a bunch of zombies in a run-down diner. I slowly backed up and got Bell's attention and the second she moved, her collar made noise. I cursed as the zombies looked up at us.
"Bell!" I yelled before I turned and ran as fast as I could. We turned the corner and ran back to the line of trucks. Logan was the first one to see me.
"Zombies! Everyone get back in the trucks!" James was getting into the driver seat as Camille got in, next to Hannah, while Logan got in the passenger seat. Bell jumped into the back of the truck and I followed, closing it before James pulled off.
The next time we stopped was at a gas station. We all pulled in and parked next to a pump. Everyone got out of their cars, looking around for a way to turn on the pumps before someone said they knew how to make them work. That person and someone with a gun walked into the store while everyone that had a gun searched the area. I could hear Logan talking about directions as Jo got out of the car.
"What happened back there?"
"I don't know. I think she thought she could run back to Kendall but after a while, she stopped but then she saw a figure. I followed her and she stopped when I saw someone. I was hoping they were human but they weren't. They saw us and started running towards us, so I shot them. She laid down on the ground but I got her to stand up. When she did, she looked alert and when I looked up, there were tons of zombies in this diner. They heard her collar and started chasing us."
"Next time, keep that mutt on a leash." I heard some guy say on the other side of the pump. I realized it was the same guy who was talking shit when we first got there.
"Um, excuse you." Jo said before she turned back to me.
"None of this would've happened if your little group didn't show up." That was the last straw. I jumped from the truck and pushed him into his before I aimed the gun at his head.
"I've had it with you! Say another word and your brains will be everywhere."
"Carlos!" I heard James yell before he took the gun out of my hand, placing a hand on my chest, moving me back a little. "Look, I want to shoot this asshole just as much as you but that's not how we run things. We're almost out of New Mexico, that much closer to Texas."
"I don't care, James, I just want to fucking kill him."
"Come on, don't say that. You do care and I know you might not care about him but you care about yourself."
"You're wrong." I told him, honestly.
"Well, I know for a fact that you care about Hannah, Bell, and Kendall."
"Yeah."
"Well, if you kill him, that's going to cause a hell of a lot of problems and that's the last thing we need right now." I sighed and turned around, getting back into the truck.
James' POV
I let out a sigh of relief as Carlos climbed back into the truck and rubbed Bell. I turned to the guy Carlos was just holding the gun to and he looked like he was about to move but I stopped him.
"Look, I just saved your life. I suggest you don't say a word to him because if you push him one more time, it won't be him that'll pull the trigger." He nodded before he went back to filling the truck up with gas. I walked across the gas station and gave a thumbs up to the guy who helped us by cutting them on before I reached the truck Katie and Mrs. Knight were in.
"What happened over there?" Mrs. Knight asked me.
"Carlos was about to kill that man, right then and there."
"Oh my goodness."
"How are you two holding up?" I asked them and Katie shrugged.
"We both cried a little before we remembered how strong Kendall is."
"What about Carlos and Bell?"
"They're taking it pretty hard. Carlos told me that he doesn't care about his life but he does care about Hannah, Bell, and Kendall. That's how I managed to stop him from killing that guy."
"Why on Earth would he want to kill him?"
"That man has been talking shit ever since they got here and I think he said something along the lines of everything was fine until they got here."
"Wow."
"I know right. I need to get us moving again before something else happens." I said before I headed back to our truck. Logan was done pumping the gas and Carlos was sitting quietly in the back with Bell. I got in and started it up before looking back at Camille and Jo.
"Is she okay?" I asked, referring to Hannah.
"She's fine, just sleep." I nodded before leading everyone out of the gas station and following Logan's directions.
Carlos' POV
James and Logan switched seats right before it got dark while me and Bell laid down in the back. She was sleep and I was just looking up at the starts. I checked on Hannah a few times and saw Jo and Camille taking good care of her. I have never seen so many stars in my life and that was probably the only perk of this zombie apocalypse. I just wish Kendall could be laying next to me. Now, he's probably floating above me, looking down.
A part of me wants to believe that he's still alive but there's another part of me that's thinking realistically. I thought back to what I told James when I was about to kill that guy. I have never said something so truthful before in my life. I remember when I told Kendall that. The look on his face was something I had never seen before. I sat up when I remembered what I told him. I'm only doing this for Hannah. Jo and Camille are doing such a good job; I can't help but think that she'd be fine if I ended my life now. Her and Kendall were the only reasons for me to keep living.
Now that Kendall's gone and Hannah's well taken care of, there's no reason for me to be here. I mean, it's going to happen sooner or later. Logan hasn't found a cure, we're forced to evacuate our camp, and who's to say that we won't come across a shit ton of zombies. I felt Bell move and when I looked down at her, she was staring at me. For some reason, I felt like she just read my mind because she laid her head on my lap and whimpered. I sighed and rubbed her head before I laid down again. I really hope Kendall made it out alive.
"Carlos!" I shot up only to see Camille smiling.
"What?" I said, rubbing my eyes.
"We're here and there are tons of people and room for everyone."
"Is there any word on Kendall?" I asked her as I got out of the truck and she froze.
"I didn't ask but I'll ask the next time I see James or Logan." We grabbed all of our things and followed the group onto the college campus.
"Smart place to set up camp." Jo commented as she carried Hannah's car seat. I looked down at her to see her looking at Bell.
Almost an hour later, I was sitting mine and Kendall's bag in our small house. It was smaller than our house at James and Logan's camp but it was fine.
"Do you want us to watch her while you find out about Kendall?" Jo asked me and I nodded my head. Bell stuck by my side the whole time and as I closed the door, she followed me all the way to the bed. I laid down and she jumped up, laying next to me, looking at me.
"Don't worry, girl, I'm okay." I told her and she licked me in my face. I moved back a little and smiled at her before I felt myself falling asleep.
I woke up and rolled onto my back staring up at the ceiling. I had a dream about him. It was so short. He showed up at the door and smiled at me before he faded away. I felt a tear fall as I looked over at Bell and saw that she was still sleep.
I ran my hands down my face before I decided to get in the shower. I sat out the clothes that I was going to put on afterwards and grabbed my towel and washcloth that was in the closet. I turned the water on and waited for it to adjust before stepping in. I sighed as thoughts of Kendall came running through my mind again.
That dream was so vivid; I could swear it was happening. When he showed up, the joy I felt had to be something real. But now, it's just heart wrenching pain, knowing he's probably dead. They say when someone you love dies; they show up in your dreams. I could help but break down at that realization. Kendall coming to my dream meant that he was gone forever. Once I stopped crying, I washed my body and my hair. I stepped out of the shower and grabbed the towel off the counter and dried myself off.
I didn't bother to stop past the mirror before heading back into the bedroom. Bell sat up and looked at me before she put her head back down with a whimper. I don't know what I'm going to do with her. I just hope she doesn't get too sad that she stops eating or something. I threw on my clothes before there was a knock on the door. It was probably Camille and Jo coming to check on me. I opened the door to see it was Camille.
"Hey, they're throwing a welcoming party in a few, do you want to come?"
"I'm not really in the mood to see other people."
"I understand. I'll check up on you later okay?"
"Alright."
"Bye."
"Bye." I said, closing the door. Bell jump from the bed and ran to where I was in the hallway.
"It wasn't him. I wish it was though." I told her, kneeling to her level. I was caught off guard when she ran past me. She started barking at the door and I walked up to it, just in time to hear a knock.
"If this was Camille's idea of later, I swear-" I stopped dead in my rant as I opened the door and the first thing I saw was shaggy blonde hair.
"Hi." Was all he said before I threw myself in his arms, trying to hold back the tears that eventually fell from my eyes. Bell jumped up on him and I broke our hug so he could show her some love. She ran back into the house and started running around, wagging her tail.
"I know she isn't the only one happy to see me." He said, smiling before I smashed my lips against his. When I broke our kiss, I hit him in his arm.
"Ow, what-"
"Don't you ever do something like that again." I said before I kissed him again. To say that I missed him was an understatement. I thought he was gone forever and the fact that I have him with me, his lips pressed to mine, had to be the greatest feeling in the world. I broke apart from him when I felt something wet. I gasped when I looked at my hand to see blood.
"Are you bleeding?"
"No, it was someone elses." He told me and I let out a sigh of relief before I went to the bathroom to wash my hands. When I came back out, I saw Kendall sitting on the bed with his head in his lap.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm just tired." He said before he looked up at me with a smile.
"Camille and Jo don't know you're here yet. I have to go get them." I said before I bolted out the door.
Kendall's POV
After Carlos left, I sighed and fell back on the bed, wincing a little from my body aching. I was able to save the little boy and return him to his family. He also promised me that he was going to keep my secret. I got up and headed to the bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror and watched as a tear fell from my eye. I took a step back and slowly lifted up my shirt as the tears began to flow down my face. I can't believe I let this happen to me. I can't believe I let myself get bit.
A/N: I cried a little bit at that last part. I hate leaving chapters like this but I have to. REVIEW PLEASE! :D
