A/N: Ugh, I can't believe this is the last chapter to this story. I really enjoyed typing this story. And to think all of this just came from a dream I had and typed a little sentence when I woke up. I really hope everyone who's read this far has enjoyed this story and now the last chapter. ENJOY! :D
(flash back)
Kendall's POV
As I ran back into the safety camp, I checked the gun to make sure it was loaded. I made sure the safety was off as I headed towards the people's house. I knew exactly where it was because I remember looking at a map of the place. I snuck past several zombies, killing ones that I had to in order not to draw attention to myself.
Once I made it to the house, I saw that the front door was open. I snuck inside and found two zombies in front of a bedroom door, hitting it, trying to get through. I shot both of them before I called out to the little boy that everything was going to be fine. He slowly opened the closet door before he gasped and closed it. I turned around to see a zombie about to attack me. I quickly rolled out of the way and shot it in the head.
"Kid, you're going to have to come on out, if you plan on leaving this place." The door opened and the boy slowly walked out.
"Hi, I'm Kendall."
"I-I'm Jason."
"That's a cool name, I kind of wish my mom named me that." I said, making him smile.
"Alright Jason, we have to get to a truck waiting for us before these things get to it. Are you ready?" He shakily nodded his head before we snuck out the back door. There were a few zombies searching around and in trash cans. I ran pass a zombie and when I turned around Jason was still standing there in shock. I gestured for him to move and he clumsily ran over to where I was.
"Okay, you like to play video games right?"
"Y-Yeah, I guess."
"Have you played Resident Evil?"
"My Dad has and I watched when my mom wasn't home."
"Good, then think of this being the game, only you have one life. I'm going to help you and all you have to do is follow my every move unless I tell you not to. Okay?" He nodded his head before we started moving again. We managed to get pass the bulk of them but Jason tripped and hit a chain fence which made enough noise that we were spotted. He looked so scared, I knew he wasn't going to listen to a word I said, so I grabbed him and swung him onto my back before I started sprinting to the truck.
"Start the truck!" I yelled when I got close enough. The driver nodded before starting the truck just as we got close enough. I put the gun safety on before I handed it to Jason and tossed him into the back of the truck. I knew the zombies were right behind me, so I used that to motivate me to push myself faster and jump onto the back of the truck. Once I was safely in, I laid on my back trying to catch my breath.
"Thank you."
"No problem." I said, panting.
"Dude, you're like a modern day Superman." The driver said and I smiled, giving him a thumbs up while I caught my breath. That's when I remembered I had to do a body check. I gasped and sat up, looking at my arms and legs before I turned to Jason.
"Check everywhere and make sure you aren't bit. I don't know if it's a numbing feeling or anything like that so check." I told him and he nodded before he did so. I let out a sigh of relief when he showed me he wasn't bit. I was hoping that by the first rest stop, we would have caught up with everyone but when we pulled up, everything was empty. The driver filled the truck up with gas before he went to the bathroom. Me and Jason laid in the back and just watched the clouds move. We were sitting there for a while before I sat up and looked around for the driver.
"He's either still using the bathroom or he's dead." I told Jason and immediately regretted it when he looked scared. I had finally been able to take his mind off of things and just threw it all back with that one statement.
"Stay here." I told him before I climbed out.
Creepy gas stations are so cliché for a moment like this. But I've watched enough movies to know what can happen, so I took out my gun and made sure it was ready to fire. I walked through the shattered glass door and stopped when I heard a grunt. I slowly moved down each aisle to see if anything was to salvage. The best I got were a few warm bottles of water in one of the refrigerators. Just when I was thinking about ways to carry them, I heard the sound of glass crunching under someone's feet. I slowly walked down the sides of the aisle to see who was there.
"Kendall." I heard someone whisper and I knew it was Jason.
"Jason, what are you doing?"
"There's zombies outside." He whispered and pointed.
"Ahh, sweet relief." Someone said and I recognized it as the driver.
When I turned a zombie jumped out nowhere and bit him on his neck. He screamed and I quickly grabbed Jason and moved behind the counter covering his mouth as zombies came running in. I could hear the driver screaming as the zombies ate him and I felt my hand covering Jason's mouth start to get wet and I knew that he was crying. I just prayed that he didn't make a sound.
"We have to make it back to the truck without getting caught." I whispered and he nodded his head. I removed my hand from his mouth and peaked around the counter to see all of them still eating. I gestured for him to hold on to my back before I slowly stood up to sneak out the front. They burst through the front doors to get in here so all I had to do was avoid the- I cringed as I stepped on a piece of glass and instead of looking back, I just ran straight for the truck. I opened the passenger side and felt Jason climb off my back. I pushed him in before I turned around to see them all coming towards me. I ran around the side of the car when I heard it start. I looked in to see Jason had started the truck. I climbed in and press the gas, speeding out and down the road.
"Thanks kid." I said, rubbing his head, making him smile. Jason started going through the glove box and he pulled out a map.
"This must be where we're going." He said and I smiled before seeing if there was a CD or something in the truck.
"Stay sane." I read scribbled on the CD I found in the middle compartment. I wiped it off and put it in the radio.
"I'm coming home, I'm coming home. Tell the world I'm coming home. Let the rain wash away all the pain of yesterday. I know my kingdom awaits and they've forgiven my mistakes, I'm coming home, I'm coming home, tell the world I'm coming…"
I looked at Jason and I knew he probably didn't know the song but I did and I turned it up. I don't know why but this song made me really want to survive.
"Kendall, I have to pee." Jason told me and I nodded.
"Is there a gas station close by?" I asked him and he looked on the map.
"There's a place circled on here. I think it's another rest stop."
"That means were probably close to the other group" I told him and he smiled.
When we pulled up to the gas station it was as empty as the last one, if not more. I heard Jason sigh and I kind of felt bad for getting his hopes up. We've been traveling for a while and listening to the same CD over and over can kind of drive you insane. We ended up just turning it off and just listened to the engine and nature.
"Come on, let's go so we can get back on the road." I told him and he nodded before we got out of the truck. The gas was still on so I took advantage of the opportunity and filled the truck up before putting it back for the next person.
We both walked into the store slowly and I stopped him before he walked all the way in. I reached up and cupped the bell that was about to ring before I let him move. He stepped in and I ripped the bell down before I let the door close. I sat the bell on the counter next to the cash register before I drew my gun and checked down the small isles for anything dangerous. I got an odd feeling of déjà vu before we moved into the bathroom. I didn't really have to go just yet so I just stood there and kept watch while he headed into one of the stalls.
While he was peeing, I thought I heard something but when he stopped peeing, I didn't hear it anymore. Just as he came out of the stall the door to the bathroom burst open and three zombies came in. I shot one of them in the head but the second one knocked the gun out of my hand.
"Jason, grab the gun!" I screamed before I looked to see he was standing there in shock. I scooted back and the zombie that knocked the gun out of my hand jumped on me and I held him back just enough to slam his head into the sink. As I stood up, the third zombie was staring at Jason and I didn't know what to do.
"Hey!" I screamed and it looked at me before it jumped at him.
I dived towards the gun and Jason, shielding him with my body before I felt the zombie's teeth dig into my side. I grabbed the gun that was by him and shot it in the head. I tried not to panic once I realized what just happened. Jason backed up away from me and into a corner, pulling his legs up to his chest as he started crying. I pushed the zombie body off of me and let out a shaky sigh before I stood up. I looked in the mirror and slowly lifted up my shirt to see the teeth marks and my blood.
"Fuck." I said, leaning my forehead on the mirror.
"I-I'm s-so sorry. I-I g-go-got sca-scared a-and-"
"It's okay." I told him and he shook his head.
"It's all my fault. I-I d-didn't grab the gun."
"Hey, it's not your fault. It was three on two but we still won and you're safe and that's all that matters." I told him, knowing I had to be calm to keep the infection from moving faster. I helped him up off the ground and he kept looking at my side.
We headed back to the car and he started crying again once we started driving. I didn't know what to say so we just continued to drive to the safety camp in silence. When it got really late, I noticed Jason was sleep and I couldn't go to sleep because there was so much on my mind. I didn't know how long I had until I turned but I was going to get him as close as possible. I kept driving until the silence eventually made my eyelids heavy. I slowed the truck down and put it in park, killing the ignition. I took out my pistol and sat it on the dashboard in front of Jason before I made sure my seatbelt was on tight. I laid my head on the steering wheel before slowly drifting off to sleep.
"K-Kendall? Please don't be dead." I heard Jason say as he shook me.
"I'm not." I told him before I sat up, rubbing my neck as he let out a sigh. I started the car and rubbed my eyes, ignoring the pain in my side before I started the car. Jason grabbed the map and gasped.
"We're almost there!"
"Awesome." I told him and he couldn't stop smiling before he looked down at my side.
"Your side is bleeding."
"Let's try not to think about that." He nodded and we continued the drive to the safety camp. As we pulled up to the front, I let out a sight. I finally made it. I have enough time to say goodbye before I report myself to the authorities and let them deal with me however they choose. I drove through security and they smiled when they saw me.
"Glad to see you've made it safely."
"Yeah, me too." I said to one of the guards before we came to a stop. When we were almost here, it was Jason's idea for me to hang my shirt out of the window so it could dry and I could pass it off as someone else's blood. It worked and before we parted ways, he gave me a hug and started crying.
"Hey, no tears. We made it and you're safe." I said, crouching down to his level.
"But you're going to turn into one of those things."
"I know but I'll be happy knowing that you get to live with your parents." I told him before we hugged once more and parted ways. I was informed where Carlos was and I eagerly headed over to the house and knocked on the door. I could hear Bell barking and I smiled before the door swung open and I saw the look of pure shock on my love's face.
"Hi."
Carlos' POV
I couldn't help the tears I shed throughout the story. Both of them had been through much more than what we had to go through. The one thing that really stood out with me was how much Kendall cared about Jason even though he just met him.
"You know there's a special bond you get when you survive something like this with others." Kendall said, looking up at the ceiling.
"Oh yeah?" I said, laying my head on his chest.
"Yeah. For example, Jason and I are pretty much best friends because we've saved each other's lives."
"What does that make me?"
"Well, we fought together, saved each other's lives, all while caring for a dog and a baby. So, that makes us your typical gay family and it makes you my husband…if there were a government and it was legal in Texas."
"After all the shit we've been through, it better be legal all over the whole damn country." I said before we both started laughing.
"I love you so much." Kendall said, squeezing me.
"I love you too."
"You remember what a while back when you said that you were onlive
"I'm also glad that you never gave up on life completely."
"Neither did you."
"That's true but I just found a reason to live."
Epilogue (Several Years Later)
Carlos was standing in the kitchen while Hannah, who's now three years old, played in the living room. Kendall and Carlos now lived in a high class neighborhood in a house completely paid for by the government in California. Carlos walked to the front door when he heard a knock and before he could reach it the door opened.
"I told you I had a key." Kendall said to Ricky, their son.
"I know but I wanted to see if I could get inside before you." Ricky was a little boy who Kendall found when traveling with recruits to distribute the cure.
When Kendall found him, he was in the attic of his parent's house. His parents, however, were dead in their front yard. Both of them had a bullet in their zombie heads. Ricky was on the verge of death and looked horribly skinny. Kendall thought back to the bond he formed with Jason when they had to survive. He helped keep Ricky alive until they could get him to a hospital.
Using his newly instated position as General of the CCD (Center for Cure Distribution), Kendall made sure nurses looked after Ricky with extra care while he recovered. When Kendall returned home, he brought up the idea to Carlos of adopting Ricky. At first, Carlos was a little apprehensive but when he visited the boy in the hospital, they both instantly bonded. After filing out the proper paper work, Kendall and Carlos took the boy home to meet his new younger sister, Hannah. They both instantly bonded while Ricky learned about everything Kendall and Carlos went through in order to survive with Hannah.
Most of the world still needed rebuilding but after the cure was discovered, with the usage of machines, they replicated the cure and began to distribute it throughout the world. While they ran tests on Kendall, Carlos, and Hannah, they all became in charge of how many countries could acquire the cure. Some approached them with placing a price on the cure, which several countries couldn't afford but Kendall and Carlos decided that this plague and the escape from it shouldn't have a dollar value. The rebuilding of countries on the other hand was something out of their control but it seemed as if this plague gave everyone around the world a heart. Wealthier countries helped poorer countries with the cure distribution and help with rebuilding their civilization.
After all the award ceremonies and interviews, once media recovered, Kendall and Carlos focused on raising their children together just like they planned, happily and legally married.
Although many people couldn't be saved with the cure, Kendall, Carlos, and Hannah became notable figures, receiving Statues all around the world. One thing that stood out in every statue was the color of Hannah's eyes, so that whenever someone didn't know the story behind the statue, people will refer them to the color of their eyes.
The End
A/N: I am quite satisfied with how I wrapped this story. I hope one day it can be made into a movie but that's a really long term goal of mine. I hope this ending didn't disappoint anyone. Tell me how you feel about it. REVIEW PLEASE! :D
