Resh POV
Lydia left to go looking for a bed for her and Resh. It was clear he and Brelyna were going to have an important talk, and although Lydia knew what it would be about she had the decency to let them have it by themselves, so giving them some privacy was probably a good idea.
"Was there anything in particular you wanted to say or was it just to apologise?" Resh sighed, still deeply depressed from Kayci's words.
Brelyna didn't really know how to respond to that, whether with anger at how rudely he dismissed her, or with empathy at how morose he seemed, "Well yes, there was. I wanted to know why Kayci was acting that way, I know delirium may be a part of it, but there must be more to it than that."
"There is more to it," he muttered, "But that's really something she should tell you, I don't plan on her having more than one reason to kill me."
He would have told her the truth, but after a moments thought decided not to. He had been friends with Kayci for a long time, and the least she deserved after all she had done for him was to do things for herself.
The Elf wasn't an idiot, she knew exactly what the reason Kayci's anger was for, Resh being the Dragonborn obviously, but as for why, she didn't know, especially since her lover was a Nord. Considering her culture Kayci should love that her best friend was the legendary Dovahkiin.
"That's what I don't get though, I'm not going to pry or anything, but you two really need to sort this out between yourselves. I know you're going to stay another day so in the morning you need to talk to Kayce before you leave," she explained to him, she understood how he wanted to leave as soon as possible.
She had even heard him trying to convince Lydia they should leave right away, and was thankful for the Nord woman's refusal. Maybe she would have a chance to mend some bridges between the two others in the morning when the two calmed down.
"Will she be able to move?" Resh asked.
Brelyna snorted at the odd question, "I highly doubt it. Definitely not for at least another few weeks, and even after that she still won't be very active at all. The dragon really did a number on her so it's likely she'll never fight again."
"Perfect!" Resh smiled slightly, although it was very brief as it immediately gave way to his previous depressed state, especially after the glare he received from Brelyna at his apparent excitement. "In that case, I'll do it, as long as she is a good few feet away from hitting distance I don't mind trying to explain myself if it means satisfying you. It won't work though, I know Kayce, and I can guarantee she'll never want to see me alive again."
"I guess that's as good as I can hope for," she muttered before turning stern again, "I'm really sorry to say this Resh, but I like you, you're a good friend, but if the two of you do fall out for good I think it's obvious who I'll side with, regardless of if I think she's right or not. Onto lighter topics though, I'm definitely thinking that we can write to you two if I you and Kayci make up."
Resh sighed, "I wouldn't expect you to act any other way. As for writing, I too hope we can stay in contact but I understand if that's not going to happen. It would be great to have someone to write to though. I never get the opportunity to write, so it would be nice to perfect my skills. I tried to teach Kayce once, she didn't learn anything, and I don't know how, but I got worse."
"Is she really that bad?" Brelyna groaned with dread, "I was hoping she would be able to pick up a few things, she is in a college after all. So she should probably get more done than keeping my bed warm for me."
"Yeah… I have a feeling that is all she would want to do here. She 'says' she wants to learn magic, but she'll get bored after 10 minutes and go back to trying to pull you away from work for her 'reasons'," Resh smirked, it was fairly obvious Kayci wasn't going to like much of the college life apart from the few moments it wasn't actually happening.
Brelyna playfully hit him before smiling again, "See? this is why you two have to stay friends, you are so close, like family. You know more about her than I do, and I'm sure she knows almost everything about you too. You can't stop being friends, it would just be wrong."
"Believe me, the current situation is the furthest from what I could ever want, but you heard her, she would mean that when in her right mind too, I can try to talk some sense into her if I can, but it will be hard, and a lie too seeing as I completely agree with her."
"How can you agree with her…" Brelyna trailed off, was he talking about wanting himself dead?
Resh just sighed, "There are definitely a few conversations you will want to have with her when we go."
Kayci POV
The nights sleep really did wonders for her injuries, despite it being obvious to Kayci that it would be a long time before she could move again she wasn't in nearly as much pain as she was the day before. And having an actual bed to sleep in as well for the whole night was perfect, instead of having to steal away a few hours on a bedroll every so often.
It was a shame Brelyna wasn't with her, but she guessed that the Elf also needed to sleep, but didn't want to wake her up when she was resting. Kayci made a note to do something special for her when she next got the chance, although that probably wouldn't be for a while.
Kayci wondered if shedding and getting rid of her currently gnarled up skin would be a good enough repayment to Brelyna. The mage would definitely enjoy having Kayci back to normal, but then again it would probably raise a tonne of questions, which will lead to not so happy conversations, so it probably wouldn't be the best idea for a gift.
Besides, it was too much focused around herself as well, it wouldn't really be a reward to Brelyna for being such a perfect girlfriend if it was something that Kayci had wanted herself. No, she would have to think of something else, fortunately she had a long time to think about it before she could move and was obliged to go do it.
Revealing she was a Tsaesci wasn't something she intended to do anyway, the last time she had was with Elenwen, and look how that turned out, Kayci broke up with her in a rather rushed manner and they never saw each other again. Looking back on it Kayci realised she was a terrible girlfriend in that aspect, and vowed to avoid doing the same awful thing she did to Elenwen, to Brelyna.
It's not like she could go anywhere, or travel with anyone either. However much she liked Lydia, she was afraid that her ex-friend would probably end up killing her while she couldn't fight back, dragons weren't known for being particularly honourable creatures, and she wouldn't put it past something as disgusting as one of those prey creatures to kill an unsuspecting and disabled enemies when it couldn't retaliate.
If she were mobile Kayci would have sprinted out of the door first chance she got to find and kill him, and most likely save Lydia in the future. But unfortunately that wasn't going to happen, the strain in her muscles hurt way too much and she couldn't go anywhere, let alone out of the door.
Seemingly on cue as she was thinking about it the large reinforced entrance was thrown open. She wasn't looking directly at it, but judging from how heavy those wooden and steel slabs were, and how hard they had slammed against the walls from one push there was only one person it could have been.
Unlike how she had reacted yesterday Kayci tried to be a little more intelligent this time, instead of shouting at him and warding him off, or more likely killing her, the 'true' Tsaesci decided to close her eyes and pretend to be asleep.
Hopefully this way he would let his guard down just long enough for her to gather as much strength as she could muster and kill him. It wasn't really a plan she was expecting to work considering her current condition, and Resh already being much stronger than her.
For the most part her new scheme was working, it hadn't even noticed she was awake and was getting closer and closer, maybe Kayci would get the chance to kill a second dragon after all, it not like she would willingly let something this disgusting live. That it was being under the guise of one of her own species was even more of an insult, no dragon was worthy of looking like a Tsaesci.
"Kayci…?" it asked quietly as it stepping closer, Kayci had to restrain herself from jumping up when he got within a few feet, she would have to wait until it got to at least a couple of inches, otherwise it would have time to react.
Another step forwards, "Kayce… you awake?" Kayci snapped and threw her arms up at him, she should have waited slightly longer, but the sound of her name, her pet name, coming out of that dragons mouth so casually just made something in her head break.
It seemed Resh knew it was coming though and immediately caught her wrist, her arm was weak anyway so it wasn't moving particularly quickly to begin with. Her arm screamed with pain be she didn't let it show, instead she hissed, "Let go of me."
Resh remained defiant though, although there was a clear pang of sadness in his eyes, Kayci knew a creature like him had no empathy, and was just using 'crocodile tears' to lead her into a false sense of security. "No, you'll attack me again, I just want to talk."
"Liar!" she yelled at him, tears starting to form in her eyes, she was ashamed to admit it, but Resh scared her, the dragon could easily kill her and she was defenceless, "You're just trying to kill me!"
Resh sighed, "I knew I shouldn't have done this. Brelyna was so wrong about getting me to talk to you," however much the Tsaesci had tried to ignore what he was saying her eyes did widen at the name of her girlfriend, and shock, fear and despair, among hundred of other similar emotions, darted around her head.
The dragon was stunned when she started to all out cry, and looked down at the bawling mess of a person, deciding to let go of her wrist seeing no danger in it.
"Please… I'm begging you please don't… don't kill her," she begged, groaning in agony as she reached to grab his clothing, "You can kill me, but please not Brelyna. Just kill me now and get it over with then leave, I can't fight back so you have your chance… do it!"
Resh didn't really know what to say, in almost an instant she had gone from trying to kill him to a blubbering mess tearing up at the thought of something so awful he would never even think of doing. "I'm not going to kill either of you. Kayce, you're my friend, being a dragon doesn't change who I am, or who you are to me, I'm sorry if it's too much for you, but I have no intention of killing you."
Just like how her emotions had changed before she went back to 'angry' just as quickly, "You just don't want me to fight because of my injury, you're saving me until I can fight again! I can take you now as I am, you're a fucking dragon, you need to die, there is no way you can want anything but as much pain, suffering and domination as possible, that all dragons are!"
"Kayce, I'm not going to kill you, and I'm not going to kill Brelyna. I never want to, and never wil-"
Kayci cut him off, "Don't you say her name! your kind doesn't deserve to , if I could kill you where you stand right now I would. But because I can't I just ask of you, please just kill me and spare Brelyna, you don't need t-"
It was now Resh's time to interrupt, although it didn't really do that much as she continued to to murmur in fear about what Resh was going to do and why he only needs to kill her, "I'm not going to hurt either of you, get it into your head! I never will, I love the two of you too much for me to let any harm come to you."
The woman in the bed wasn't having any of it though, and continued to ramble her mixture of anger, clutching at straws and begging to try and get him to go away and leave her and her lover alone. It was clear there was no room for him in Kayci's life anymore. No matter what he said she just got more and more terrified, for not just her own life but Brelyna's too, Resh had never seen her emotions state wrecked so much and brought to tears so quickly, let alone had expected it to come from himself.
With a final look back Resh left, trying to ignore her fearful crying and panic stricken ramblings as he left the building, he was afraid if he looked at what he had done to Kayci any longer he would suffer a similar fate, it would just be easier if he left as quickly as possible and avoided as much trouble as possible.
Almost the moment he stepped outside he caught Brelyna's eye, from the brief unspoken exchange she had seemingly understood in an instant he had been unsuccessful and marched past him, pushing open the doors with unbelievably more force than he did.
Maybe she would have better luck.
Brelyna POV
The Dunmer never thought she would ever see someone in the state Kayci was currently in, and to say it was a shocking sight was an understatement, a massive understatement. Of all people Kayci was not the sort of person she would expect to react so badly to a situation.
The woman had basically had a huge panic attack and was currently muttering and chanting as if it were a mantra, Brelyna wished she could understand what she was saying, but it was in the hissing language only she and Resh could even understand. Not only this, but Kayci was furiously sweating, and darting her eyes around in sheer terror. If she could move Brelyna had no doubt she would sprint away as fast as possible and hide in a corner.
In all her years she had never seen any woman so scared, let alone her own lover. What could Resh have possibly done to make a woman so fearless a sobbing mess? the more she thought about it though the less it seemed like it was actually Resh's fault. He may be this 'Dragonborn' thing, but it was Kayci's problem.
This didn't mean she wouldn't side with the injured woman if push came to shove, it just meant she could see Kayci was wrong, even if she was backing her all the way. It also showed just how much the Elf needed to right this wrong, it would be awful to watch Kayci and Resh stop being friends.
It was almost frightening when Kayci fixed her eyes upon her, "Brelyna, don't let Resh near you. Kill him next chance you get if you can, but more importantly get away."
"I'm not going to do that Kayce. He hasn't done anything wrong," Brelyna told her calmly, not wanting to be stern with her as she seemed so fragile at the moment.
Unfortunately it didn't seem to have worked as Kayci started freaking out again, shouting about how she was wrong, and he was a lying dragon trying to murder them. Brelyna sighed, it seemed that regardless of what she said the woman just wasn't listening, or accepting any of what she tried to get through to her.
Kayci's frantic panic had also seemed to have caused other problems, the halls they were currently in were by no means private, in fact the Nord woman's loud yelling in fear had actually disturbed some of the other students. And Brelyna glared at J'Zargo when he tried to look at what the commotion was from his room, the icy look she sent him quickly got him to retreat back to where he had been studying.
"Kayce," Brelyna started, but the burnt woman was paying no heed and was still murmuring nonsense, so the Dark Elf had to raise her voice to stop her, "Kayce listen!"
It didn't do much though, as even Brelyna's more forceful tone didn't calm her down. This time she took a different strategy. "Kayci, if you don't listen to me now there's no sex for you," a strategy which immediately worked.
Unfortunately Kayci wasn't the only one who heard it as the damn Khajiit peered his head around again to see whatever it was she was talking about it. Brelyna sighed, "Fuck off J'Zargo, this is none of your business."
And for the second time in only a few seconds the cat growled in annoyance and left them in peace, but Brelyna knew that he was still probably listening in, the little perv.
Nevertheless Brelyna looked down again at the still panicked, but now attentive face, even through one eye Brelyna could see just how much Kayci didn't want to have to go celibate, "You've got to understand this Kayce, please, for me try to listen."
Kayci nodded, but stayed silent, "Resh isn't a bad person, just because he is this 'Dragonborn' doesn't mean he isn't the same person you've known for however many years it's been for you two. I know that for some reason you hate this whole situation, but you need to realise that he seems to despise it as well, he wants it no more than you do."
The Nord tried to shake her head, but groaned in pain while doing so, "If that was true he would have killed himself."
"That's what I don't get about you Kayce," Brelyna threw up her arms in exasperation, "You're a free spirited person, you regularly have digs at Resh for being so much of a traditionalist, yet despite all of your open-mindedness and laid back thinking you still want to condemn him to death?"
Kayci snorted derisively in reply, "He fucking deserves it, he's a dragon, they're all evil lying cowards. More importantly, he's prey. You wouldn't understand."
"I don't think I've ever heard worse logic than that, especially when you have your own issues, which with your logic you should be killed for," Brelyna countered, willing to argue properly now Kayci seemed to have collected herself enough to have a proper, if unnecessarily angry, conversation.
The burned woman narrowed her good eye, "What do you mean?"
"I'm not an idiot Kayci, I can actually pick up on your meanings from the context even if you are sometimes very vague when saying things. From what I know you don't follow all of your people's rules, and considering the small amounts I've heard about them they seem so unreasonable that's probably punishable by death."
Kayci went to open her mouth but Brelyna carried on.
"And don't get me started on that nonsense based around your name. Wanting to have Resh killed because he's a dragon is just as shit a reason as that nonsense about you being killed because your last name is 'Raka'!" Brelyna snapped, finally having had enough of Kayci's unreasonableness.
Brelyna almost wondered if she had overstepped her place as Kayci stared at her with one wide eye starting to brim with tears and a dropped jaw, but the Elf reasoned that even if it upset her it was something that needed to be said. "Can I have some time alone to think?" Kayci whispered, trying to hold back her emotions from crying out.
The Dunmer nodded quickly and strode out, giving her lover all the space she needed. Her words had obviously struck home.
