Lily used the GPS on Dean's phone to track him to a motel. She saw the Impala sitting in the parking lot and let out a breath. She had found him. Now, to announce herself. Dean wouldn't be happy. She parked far enough away that she wouldn't be noticed, just in case she decided to back out in the next few minutes. Not likely.
As she turned off the engine, Sam came out of the building with another man. An older man in a hat. It had to be Martin. She watched as they walked past the Impala and got into another car. She felt an uneasiness in her stomach. There was a determined look on Sam's face, and Dean was obviously still inside. She waited until the car was gone, then made her way into the building.
Once inside, she saw that it was a little more like an apartment building than a motel. No front desk, but the room to the immediate left was clearly labeled "Manager." She knocked, and a short, stout man answered the door.
"You lookin' for a room?"
"No, sir. I'm looking for my father. He was just released from a mental hospital and he's run off."
"What makes you think he run off here?"
"I turned on the GPS in his cell phone. I know he's in the building, I just need to know which room."
"Name?" The man stepped into his apartment, leaving the door open. He walked over to a desk with a ledger.
"Martin Creaser."
The man scanned his finger down the ledger, then stopped, tapping twice.
"Yep. Room 2."
"Thank you, very much."
The man nodded and closed the door. Lily quickly found room 2. After knocking repeatedly with no answer, she picked the lock. When she got the door open, her jaw nearly hit the ground. Dean was unconscious, on the floor, handcuffed to a radiator. She closed the door and quickly went to his side. There was blood coming from his forehead.
"Dean," she said softly. She put her hands to his face and began to hit him gently. "Dean!" Her slaps got harder until Dean finally groaned. "Wake up, Dean."
Dean's eyes slowly opened and took in his surroundings. As everything began to register, his eyes fixed in Lily.
"What are you doing here?"
"Really? That's where you wanna start? How about telling me how you got like this?" She began picking the lock on the cuffs.
"I think Martin knocked me out."
"And Sam let him cuff you?"
"Looks like." The cuffs fell away and Dean rubbed his wrist. "Sam knows I can get out of cuffs. This was just to buy them some time. They're going after Benny."
He pulled out his cell and dialed. Lily listened as he tried to convince Benny not to underestimate Sam. When he hung up, his eyes fell in Lily.
"I knew you agreed to stay behind too easy," he said. "Why are you here?"
"I don't like this situation at all. I don't want you to get hurt."
"I'm fine. This is just a bump on the head, and Benny won't hurt me."
"I'm not talking about physical hurt. Dean... if this is really Benny-"
"It's not."
"If it is... I just want to be here for you. Okay?"
"It's not Benny. He knows who it is, and we're going after him. I guess you're coming. I don't wanna leave you here."
"We'll have to come back later for my car. I'm riding with you. I don't want you ditching me."
"You know I'm still pissed at you for not listening."
"You know I don't care." She stood on her toes and gently pressed her lips to his.
"Yeah, I know."
Dean filled Lily in on the way. A rogue vamp, Desmond, was trying to make a name for himself, starting up his own nest. He remembered Benny from more than half a century ago and asked him to join. Benny declined, and Desmond didn't like it. He began leaving bodies around Benny as a way to flush him out until he agreed. Benny called Desmond and said he was in. He knew where Desmond was, and now they were going after him.
They met Benny at an old shipyard. Dean cut the engine and pulled a phone from his glove box.
"What are you doing?" Lily asked.
"A little insurance policy I put in place. I was hoping I wouldn't have to use it, but..." He quickly typed out a text message.
Lily leaned over and read the message quietly. 'Sam, I need your help. Come quick.'
"What are you doing?" she asked again.
"Did Sam tell you he met a girl last year?"
"No."
"Well, he did. With all the stuff with Benny... I went into his phone and switched her number with this phone number," he said holding up the phone he had just used to send the text.
"Sam will think that text is from her."
"Yeah."
"Did he love her?"
"Maybe. I think so."
"Dean, he'll be worried sick. He'll-"
"Head to Texas to find her?"
"Texas? Dean... this isn't right."
"I had to. I won't let him kill Benny. The guy saved my life. He got me back to you." Dean put his hand to Lily's cheek.
"It's not right, Dean."
Dean held up the phone. "You wanna call him and tell him what I did? Go ahead."
Lily hesitated, staring into Dean's eyes. "You already sent the message. The damage is already done. Let's just get this over with."
They got out of the car and headed toward Benny, who was leaning against his camper. He glanced at Lily with curiosity.
"Who's this?"
"Introductions later, Benny," Dean said. "Let's get this done."
Dean and Lily loaded themselves with dead man's blood and each grabbed a machete. Once inside they split up, but Dean pulled Lily to him.
"You stay with me," he whispered.
Lily nodded and walked back-to-back with Dean as they looked for Desmond. Lily barely had time to make a sound as Desmond dropped down in front of her and threw her across the room. Dean whirled around at her scream and tried to fight off the vamp, but he too was hurled across the room. Desmond went after Dean, straddling him on the floor to hold him down. Dean tried to jab him with the syringe of dead man's blood, but Desmond caught his hand and squeezed it, crushing the glass, causing Dean to cry out. At his cry, Lily found the strength to sit up. Desmond slashed a fingernail across Dean's neck, drawing blood. He licked the blood from his fingers, then moved in for the kill.
Lily watched as Benny ran past her, yanked Desmond into an upright position, and sent his machete sailing through the air, taking Desmond's head clean off his shoulders. He helped Dean off the floor. When he turned back toward her, she knew the look on his face wasn't good. Dean was bleeding, and Benny was struggling to keep his hunger under control. He collected himself and walked over to Lily, extending his hand to her to help her off of the floor.
"You okay, miss?"
"Fine, thanks."
"I get that introduction now?" he asked Dean.
"Benny... this is Lily."
"Naw... this is Lily? She actually waited for your sorry ass?"
"Waited? She tried to find me."
"No kidding? And you know what I am?"
"Yes, I do," Lily said.
"And you're not off with his brother tryin' to kill me?"
"I tend to trust Dean's judgement on things more than Sam does."
"Yeah," Dean said, "you trust my judgement so much that you snuck down here when I asked you to stay at home."
"I told you-"
"Woah!" Benny said. "Domestic dispute. Why don't you two save that one for later?"
They headed back to the cars and Benny walked over to a fence nearby. Dean pulled Lily aside.
"Will you wait in the car while I talk to Benny?"
"Sure."
Dean climbed behind the wheel a few minutes later. "Benny's gonna leave town, but he wants to see his great-granddaughter one last time."
"Seriously? He found family?"
"I told you, Lily. He's trying to stay clean. But he can't stay here now, so I need to make sure he leaves."
Lily nodded. They drove to the diner where Benny had been working. She stayed in the car as Dean got out and stood next to Benny. They watched a brunette through the open door for a few minutes, shook hands, and parted ways.
Once Dean was headed back get Lily's car, he called Martin. He told Martin that he and Benny killed the vamp that was really behind the deaths and that Benny was long gone.
"Don't try to follow him," Dean said into the phone. "Oh, and Martin... find a new line of work."
Dean hung up the phone and turned up the music. They weren't on the road long before Dean's cell rang. He answered it, turning down his music.
"Elizabeth?"
Lily listened to Dean's side of the short conversation. She watched as his face quickly changed to show concern. He hung up the phone and tossed it to the seat.
"Hang on," he said. At the first intersection he came to, he spun around, doing a complete 180.
"Elizabeth? Benny's granddaughter?"
"Yeah."
"Is she okay?"
"I don't know."
Dean accelerated and went as fast as he could, screeching to a stop at the diner. Elizabeth was sitting outside on the steps waiting. Dean and Lily both got out. As they walked up to Elizabeth, she pointed to the diner over her shoulder with a shaking hand. Dean saw a small, bleeding wound on her throat and pulled a towel from his pocket. He put it over the wound and Elizabeth held it there.
"Stay with her," he said to Lily. Lily nodded and Dean went inside. She sat down next to Elizabeth and put a hand on the shaking woman's back.
"It'll be okay. Can you tell me what happened?"
"A man came in... he's been here a lot lately. Every night. After everyone was gone, he pulled a knife on me. Told me he wouldn't hurt me, but I couldn't leave until Roy got back."
"Roy?"
"He's been working here a while now. The, uh... the other man called him Benny."
"Okay," Lily said with a nod. "Go on."
Dean walked out and heard the rest of the story. Martin cut the small wound into Elizabeth's throat to draw Benny's true nature out. He wanted Benny to surrender, but it didn't turn out the way Martin wanted. Martin lay dead inside. His throat ripped out.
"You think you can make it home okay?" Dean asked.
"I think so," Elizabeth said with a quick nod.
"Go home. Get cleaned up and try to get some sleep. Come back to work in the morning and call the cops. Let them handle this."
"What about Roy?"
"They won't find him."
Dean helped Lily up and they turned to walk back to the car.
"Dean..." Elizabeth called out. "What just happened?"
"Do you really wanna know?"
She stared at him, then slowly shook her head.
Lily spoke once they were in the car. "Do you think we should leave her?"
"She'll be okay. She's just in shock."
They were almost back to the building where Lily left her car when the phone in Dean's glove box rang. Dean answered it. Sam was on the other end. They talked for a moment, clearly about what Dean had done with the text. Lily listened to Dean's side of the call.
"Yeah, it's done... Martin... He had it coming, Sam. I'll tell you what happened... Okay, you wanna listen to me or not?- Damn it."
"He hung up?" Lily asked.
"Yeah."
"Can't say that I blame him."
"It was the only way."
Dean pulled up next to Lily's car. He grabbed her wrist as she moved to get out.
"I want you to head home. I'm gonna go after Sam and try to talk to him."
"Good. I can get behind that. You two are long overdue." She gave him a deep kiss. "Call me."
Dean nodded and she got out. He followed her to the main road. Lily went north. Dean went west.
