Lily was surprised when Dean and Castiel were back home a couple of days later.
"Back already?"
"We hit a wall. Where's Kevin?"
"Where do you think?"
Lily followed Dean as he walked toward the study. Castiel was close behind. They found Kevin as they usually did, hunched over the tablet. He was making notes when they walked in.
"Hey, Kev," Dean said. "We need your help."
"Of course you do. What's up?"
"We need some more of that demon TNT, ASAP."
"You used it all?"
"Yeah, so let's whip up another batch."
"Sure. West Bank witch hazel, skull of Egyptian calf, the tail of some random-ass newt that may or may not be extinct-"
"All right, all right, I get it... ingredients are hard to come by."
"That's just the first three ingredients."
"Give me the list," Castiel said. "I'll get what we need."
Dean smiled, and Kevin ripped a page from his notebook, listing all the ingredients they would need. Once he had the list, Castiel disappeared. Dean took the opportunity to spend some time with Lily. He pulled her back into the living room and kissed her hard.
"Damn, baby, I missed you."
"I missed you, too," she said as Dean kissed down her neck. "I don't think this is a good idea. Cas could be back at any minute, and you know how he likes to just pop in."
Dean groaned against her neck. "Good point."
They ended up waiting longer than expected. Dean's phone rang, and he left the room to take the call. When he came back inside, Lily couldn't hide her curiosity.
"Who was on the phone?"
"That was... It was Benny."
"Benny? Is he in trouble again?"
"No, it didn't sound like it. I think he's just looking for a friendly ear... sounds like he might be having a hard time. I told him I'd meet up with him when this is all over."
"Really?"
"What?"
"Nothing."
"No nothing... what?"
Before Lily could respond, Castiel popped back in. He wasn't alone.
"What's he doing here?" Dean asked when his eyes fell on Sam.
"Don't worry, Dean. Once we save the angel, I'm out."
"Oh, once 'we' save him. Don't hurt yourself, Sam. Cas and I can handle it."
"Not according to Cas."
"I told you we didn't need him," Dean said to Cas.
"We need everything, Dean," Castiel said. "And I need both of you, as you say, to stow your crap. Can you do that?"
Lily couldn't help but smile at Castiel putting them in their places. They had to save that angel. Lily knew what Crowley was capable of. He tortured her just for fun. She couldn't imagine what he would do if he actually wanted something from his victim.
"I'll get Kevin," Lily said. "You guys bring all this stuff to the basement."
Kevin showed them how to build the demon bombs and they got to work. There were enough ingredients for four bombs. Once they were done, Castiel, Dean, and Sam were gone.
"Not even a 'thank you,'" Kevin said.
"You know they appreciate what you do."
"Do I?"
Lily put her arm around Kevin's shoulder. "Well, I'm telling you... we all appreciate what you do."
"Thanks."
"Come on. Let's get back to that tablet."
Dean called the next day to fill Lily in. Thy were able to get the angel out, but he attacked Castiel. At least, that was Castiel's story when they found him with the angel dead in his arms. Castiel said he had to return the body to Heaven and disappeared. Dean and Sam decided to head to Rufus' cabin to talk. They both made decisions. They chose each other, and the job. Sam would leave behind the girl he had met. Dean called Benny and told him goodbye. Lily was sad for both of them, that they had to make those choices at all, but she was relieved by the outcome.
Lily got another call from Dean a couple days later. She was sitting at the breakfast bar, staring at the timer when the phone rang.
"Hey, babe," Dean said. "We caught wind of something weird in Michigan. Since it's on our way home, we're gonna check it out."
"Demon-related?"
"No, we don't think so.
"Good. I'm getting tired of all the demons and angels and their crap."
"You and me both, sweetheart."
"Be safe... both of you."
"We will."
Lily disconnected the call and watched as the last minute ticked down on the timer. At the ding, she let out a breath and walked to her bathroom where her third pregnancy test waited for her. When the first one came back positive, she knew she had to double-check. When the second one came back positive, she got the third out of disbelief. But there it was, test number three... positive.
She sat on the edge of the tub and ran a hand over her stomach. "No playing around this time," she said. "As soon as he walks through the door, I'm telling him."
Lily was waiting for Dean when they got back. He called when they were just a few miles out, and she sat waiting on the sofa. As he came through the door, she stood and walked over to him. He seemed a bit caught off guard by the kiss she gave him, but he quickly fell into it, dropping his bag to the floor.
"Can I get this greeting every time I come home?" he asked with a smile.
"I need to talk to you... in the bedroom."
"Hey, I'm all for that. Lead the way."
Once they were in the bedroom, Dean wrapped his arms around her from behind. He began kissing her neck, but Lily slowly pulled away and turned around in his arms.
"I really do need to talk to you," she said.
"That's your serious face. Bad news?"
"I'll let you decide... I'm pregnant."
"You... what?"
"I'm pregnant. I took three tests while you were gone. I have a doctor's appointment next week to confirm, but... three tests."
Dean looked down and put his hand to her stomach. She carefully watched his expression, trying to gauge how he really felt about it.
"How did you... I mean... What made you take the tests?"
"I was late."
"Oh..."
"Dean?"
"Hmm?"
"Are you okay?"
Dean finally looked up at her.
"I'm fine. I'm scared as all hell, but I'm fine."
"Really?"
"Really." Dean gave her a gentle kiss, then laid his head against hers. "I'm gonna be a father."
"You're gonna be a great father."
"I don't know about that."
"I do."
Dean lifted his head and looked into Lily's eyes.
"I love you," he whispered.
"I love you."
