Lily woke up to a familiar sensation on her neck. Dean's lips caressed her skin, and she smiled through her sleepiness.
"Good morning," she said. She opened her eyes and saw that Dean was sitting on the edge of the bed, fully dressed. She started to sit up, and Dean reached out to help her. "You're leaving already? What time is it?"
"A little after six. I knew Sam would want to get an early start. He was up first."
"He probably never went to sleep."
"Yeah, I wouldn't doubt it." Dean placed a hand on Lily's leg and gently squeezed through the sheet. "It's about a five hour drive, so we should be there by noon. I'll call you when we get there."
"Okay."
"Stay in the bunker."
"I will."
"I mean it, Lily."
"I know you do. I will."
"Kevin's already in the library."
"That doesn't surprise me," Lily said with a chuckle. "I'll help him while you two are gone. He said he thinks he's almost got it."
Dean nodded. "You can help him later. Go back to sleep."
"I won't be able to get back to sleep."
Dean pushed her back into a laying position, then kissed her deeply. "Imagine I'm next to you, and you're wrapped in my arms after making love."
"I'd rather it if I didn't have to imagine," Lily said with a grin.
Dean ran a finger down her cheek. "That's what we're fighting for, sweetheart. No more demons. No more running. No more hiding. You, me, and Sam... living a normal life." Lily scrunched her eyebrows together, giving Dean a doubtful look. "Well," he said, "almost normal. As normal as we'll ever get."
He leaned over for another kiss, and Lily's arms wrapped around his neck. After a moment, Dean reluctantly removed her arms and pulled away.
"I have to go. You and Kevin stay inside," he said as he walked to the door.
"We will. I love you."
"I love you, too."
Dean smiled and closed the door behind him. Lily stared at it. She imagined Dean coming back in, stalking over to the bed, and ravishing her. He didn't. She knew he couldn't. She turned onto her side again and fluffed her pillow by punching it a few times. She was asleep a few minutes later. When she awoke around eight o'clock, she pulled on her pajama bottoms and went into the kitchen to make something for breakfast. She took her plate to the library and found Kevin hard at work.
"How's it going," she asked.
"I feel like I'm so close," Kevin said. "These symbols just get harder and harder to keep straight."
"What can I do to help?"
Kevin glanced at her as she lifted a fork full of egg to her mouth. "I'm okay," he said. "You should rest."
"I'm pregnant, not dying. I can still help you, you know."
"I know," he said. His eyes shifted a bit and went back to the tablet. "But you should rest."
"Did Dean tell you to say that?"
Kevin's head popped up and he looked Lily in the eye. "No." Lily narrowed her eyes at him, and he looked away. "Yes."
"Ugh. That man."
When Dean called just before he and Sam checked into the motel, it made Lily realize the time. As if on cue, she started feeling hungry. She went into the kitchen to make lunch for her and Kevin.
Several hours passed with no word from Dean. Not unusual, but she was hoping to get a call since they weren't really working a job. Lily was looking through the shelves in the library when she heard Kevin mumble. Then his mumbles became louder, until he was yelling.
"I got it... I got it!"
Lily walked as quickly as she could back to Kevin. "You have it?"
"The third trial. Cure a demon."
Lily's brow wrinkled. "It took that long to translate 'cure a demon?'"
"When it's written like a Shakespearean sonnet? Yes."
Lily could tell that Kevin was frustrated. "I'm sorry," she said. "I know you were working hard. It just... does it tell you how?"
"No. Not even a hint."
"Great," Lily said. She sighed and looked back to the shelves. "Maybe the Men of Letters had something. You and Sam have been through some of this stuff. You remember seeing anything that would help?"
"That was more Sam than me," Kevin said. "I spent most of my time on the tablet."
"Okay, so we dive in. Any suggestions where to start?"
"Actually, yeah. There were some files on demonic possession cases."
"Great! Let's go look at those and we can go from there."
Kevin nodded and they went to work. Lily didn't realize how much time had passed until Dean called her.
"We're on our way home," Dean said. "Where's Kev?"
"Bathroom break."
"Well, tell him he can stop looking at that tablet. We found Metatron. We got the third trial and the tablet doesn't have instructions."
"Kevin already figured it out. We've been looking through the Men of Letters files on possession."
"Anything helpful?"
"Not yet, but we've barely scratched the surface here."
"Well, Sam and I can help. We're about two hours out."
"I'm glad this didn't keep you guys away for long."
"Yeah, me too. I - Son of a bitch!"
Lily's stomach dropped as she heard tires squeal. "Dean?" Lily got no answer, so she called out louder into the phone. "Dean!"
"Sorry, baby, I dropped the phone." Dean's words were hurried. "It's Cas. I'll call you back."
"Dean, be careful!" Lily could only think about the last time Dean saw Castiel, when Castiel tried to kill him.
"He's lying in the middle of the road. He looks hurt."
"Be careful anyway."
"I will."
Lily was a nervous wreck until she saw Dean walk in. He threw his bag on the table and sat down. Lily walked over to him and saw Sam walk in a moment later, supporting Castiel. He really was hurt. She sat next to Dean and put a hand on his knee.
"Are you okay," she asked quietly.
"It was an eventful trip." He rubbed his hand over his face, his fingers pulling at the corners of his mouth before his hand came away.
Sam got Castiel into a chair, and he slouched. Lily stared at him, confusion written all over her face.
"What happened to you," she asked Castiel. "I've seen you hurt before and you just healed yourself."
"This was... quite different."
"He was shot," Dean said.
Lily looked to Dean. "Since when do bullets hurt angels?"
"Since Crowley made bullets out of an angel blade."
"Crowley?"
"Yes," Castiel said.
"Yep!" Dean slammed his open palm on the table. "Shot Castiel and took the angel tablet."
"Oh, great," Lily said. She put her hand to her forehead and rubbed lightly with the tips of her fingers. "What do we do about that?"
"Nothing," Dean said. "We figure out how to cure a demon and that will take care of itself. There won't be a Crowley anymore." He stood from his chair and held a hand out to Lily. "I'm takin' a shower. Wanna join me?"
"Sure," Lily said.
She hesitated for just a moment before answering. Dean was angry. She could see it in his eyes. It was radiating off of him. He hadn't even so much as glanced at Castiel since they got back.
They walked down the hall in silence, hand-in-hand. As they passed their bedroom, Dean stopped and faced her.
"You go ahead and get started. I'll grab our clothes."
Lily nodded and Dean pressed a soft kiss to her lips. She let go of his hand and made her way to the showers. The water ran down her hair, over her shoulders, and over her belly. She felt the baby kick, and was smiling when Dean joined her under the water. She silently grabbed his hand and placed it where she felt the movement. Soon after, they were rewarded with a strong kick.
"Whoa," Dean said. "She packs a punch. That doesn't hurt?"
"Sometimes, a little... but I'm not complaining. Active is good."
Dean nodded and rested his forehead against Lily's. "You're doing a great job taking care of her," he said.
"Dean..."
"You are. You're gonna be an amazing mom."
A tear slipped down Lily's cheek. "You don't know... you don't know how many times I've had nightmares that I lost this baby, too."
With his forehead still against hers, Dean took Lily's face in his hands. "Shhh... the baby is fine."
"I think about that baby sometimes, and it still hurts."
"I know it does."
"Every time I feel this baby move, I'm so relieved... so grateful."
Dean pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her. He kissed the top of her head and rubbed his hand over her back.
"I'm so grateful for you," she said.
"Ditto."
They stayed wrapped in each other's arms under the shower stream for a while before Lily pulled away. She ran her thumb over Dean's cheek.
"You wanna tell me what's up with you and Cas?"
"Nothing's up."
"You're mad at him."
"Damn right I'm mad," Dean said. His voice raised slightly. "And don't try to tell me I shouldn't be. I know you don't like that he's here. You're afraid of what he might do. I heard it in your voice on the phone."
"Can you blame me?"
"No, I can't. I don't know what he's gonna do, either."
"But you brought him back here, so you must trust him on some level."
"Let's just say that, for now, I feel better knowing where he is."
"Did you ignore him the whole car ride?"
Dean rolled his eyes and pulled away from Lily. He grabbed his shampoo and started to run it through his hair. Lily knew he was done talking about it. He faced the shower head, so she stood behind him and washed his back. Her hands glided over his broad shoulders, and she felt the tension there. When he turned around to rinse off, she kissed him gently. She pulled back and saw a small smile on his lips. He poured some of her shampoo into his hand and pulled her closer.
"Come here," he said.
He kissed her while he worked the shampoo through her hair. When he turned her around to rinse it, he stared into her eyes. Lily saw a familiar look there, and she began helping him. Both of their hands raked through her hair. Once the shampoo was gone, Dean's lips crashed onto Lily's. They kissed for several minutes while their hands explored each other's bodies. When she wrapped her hand around him, he pulled back and sucked in a breath.
"If I thought I could get you back to the bedroom without anyone seeing, I'd pick you up and carry you just like this," he said.
"Naked and wet?"
A grin slowly spread across his face. "That's how you'll be before the end of the night, anyway."
Lily felt a rush of warmth through her entire body. She got out of the shower, grabbed a towel, and began drying off. Dean watched her with his arms folded, and the grin still pulling at his lips.
"Was it something I said?"
"You'd better believe it," she said. She pulled on her t-shirt and sweatpants, and looked over her shoulder as she walked out. "Come and get me, Tiger."
"Oh, you got it, Kitten."
