Chapter 17

Raven…

Radiditz hurried over to Raven hooking his arm around Raven's waist and placing one hand over his shoulder to help hoist up the tailor. The very moment he begun to help up the fallen solider he felt something unexpected and Raven pulled away from his grasp instantly. "You're a woman!"

"No way Raven's a tailor, a man" interjected Gerald.

"I could have killed you. Why did you try to fight me?" lashed Radditz.

"You didn't kill me nor could you" countered Raven.

"Raven, tell him you're a man please" said Gerald.

"I was inches away from breaking your neck if you had performed my grandpa's martial arts technique" shouted Radditz.

"Raven?" repeated Gerald.

"I would never have allowed you to kill me. I was only toying with you" tiff Raven.

"Is anyone listening to me?" Gerald felt like the third wheel and completely lost in the entire conversation. Ox King had promised to send a tailor back to remake the armies' uniform not a seamstress.

"Toying with me? So you mean to tell me that I nearly breaking your ribs was a part of your toying?" asked Radditz, annoyed.

"SILENCE!" Shouted Gerald and everything fell silent. "We need to get back to the camp as soon as possible."

Both Radditz and Raven nodded in unison. Raven struggled over to the horse and Radditz in tow. "Let me help you on."

"No" retorted Raven.

"Suit yourself but make sure you don't let your pride be the end to others life" said Radditz imperturbably.

"I'll remember that" said Raven cheekily struggling up on the horse.

"How far are we from the camp?" asked Radditz.

"Only a mile or so away" answered Gerald as he grabbed the reins of the horse. "I think we can walk the rest of the way and Raven can ride."

"Sounds good" Radditz agreed as they begun on their way.

Goku's eyes fluttered open at the soft tapings from the morning sun. Yawning he sat up and looked around the camp a few men were still fast asleep and others busy cooking. Standing he made his way toward a secluded area he found the day before hidden behind a few large willow trees and bushes. The previous night had been eventful and promising with the friend he nearly lost and made all in a few minutes. He glanced around the camp a few more times before disappearing behind the patch of bushes and coming out near the two large willow trees.

In all his dreams the past few nights he had walked over to the very spot he currently stood. He had sat near the river and bent forward looking at his reflection in the running stream. Then he would stare into the river and slowly his reflection would blur and he would see ChiChi. She was always looking up at him from the river stream with a simple smile on her face and love in her eyes. He'd reach out to the stream and feel her hand grasp his and he'd begin to pull her towards him. When he nearly had her wrapped in his arms someone's hand would tug her back and she'd scream out his name.

He'd hold on to her hand as tight as he could but she'd always slip away. Then he'd heard the voice whisper to him 'Trust me'. Goku sat Indian style between the two large willow trees and closed his eyes taking in nature. 'Are you here? I'm listening…I trust you'

For what seemed hours all Goku could hear was the rustling of leaves and splashes of fish. Had the voice heard him? He felt like he was waiting for something and he couldn't place his finger on what it could be.

I'm here…working all things together for your good…trust me….

Goku felt a heat spread through his body at the words. He felt a peace he never had in all his life was over him. He didn't know who the voice was but he felt the glory of it wash over him. Roars of cheers erupted from the camp and Goku hurried to his feet making his way back to the camp.

It was the sound of victory! Had he been away in hiding so long that a war came and finished? No there was no way. He rushed to the crowd of soldiers pushing through the crowd till he made it to the front and he could have sworn his heart burst right in his chest. Radditz was alive and standing in front of him.

"Brother" they exclaimed in unison both running till they embraced, tightly.

"I thought you were dead" said Goku.

"I thought I was too" answered Radditz.

"So you must have a full report to tell" interjected David. "General Radditz it looks like you are the first in command now."

"There is much to tell but I think this woman needs some help" said Radditz as he pointed to the Raven.

Raven struggled to get down off the horse and Goku was quick to help her down. He grabbed hold of her waist pulling her down off the horse; he felt her stiffen in his arms. Goku flashed a smile at the woman and then swept her up into his arms to carry to Jemrust the armies' physician.

"It seems she likes you brother" chuckled Radditz. "She wouldn't even let me help her on the horse last night."

"Put me down" came the weak request of Raven and Goku wholly complied. "Thank you…where do I go?"

"I can show you" interjected Krillen. "I mean if you don't mind."

"Lead the way" said Raven hopping behind Krillen gripping her side tightly.

"What happened to her?" asked Goku.

"Let's just say she barked up the wrong tree and I didn't know she was a girl or else I would have gone a little easier on her. I thought she was a man and a part of the Teriok army" said Radditz, nonchalantly crossing his arms over his chest.

"Teriok army?" said David. " Why did you think she was a part of their army and why would you attack her because of that."

"Well it seems that our new king to be isn't looking to grow the empire but destroy it. It was them that attacked us" said Radditz. "They came out of nowhere dressed exactly as we were and we were completely confused. I watched man after man fall and I fought as best I could but they overwhelmed us. I sent away the messenger to warn the king of the betrayal and I went back out to fight. I took my sword and pierced through a solider and the next thing I knew everything went black. I woke up and it was night and I didn't know much time lapse or if anyone else lived. All I knew was that I smelled the stench of death and everywhere I moved I was falling over bodies after bodies."

All in ear shot were devastated by the news and equally sorrowful for Radditz. The pain was etched on his face as he told them of all he seen and the many soldiers that had went out with hopes of peace only to meet a tragic end. Goku was equally distraught but something burned inside him as he thought of ChiChi in the arms of Absalom.

She had despised Absalom the moment he had come, and no one would listen to her. Goku worried of her health and what could be unfolding in the Ox castle at the very moment. Had he been the cause of ChiChi's illness? "We need to return to the castle!"

"Nonsense! We need to prepare to fight the Teriok army now and then return to the castle. We will send a messenger back to send word of Absalom's betrayal and to have the king and princess guarded. They expect us to come but they don't expect our new uniforms or the knowledge we have from both Radditz and Krillen." David could sense the frustration coming from Goku and he knew exactly what worried him the most.

"We will do as David said" interjected Radditz the lust of revenge burning in his blood. It seemed no matter what he tried he could never erase the images of his dying soldiers out of his head. He had failed them – they had all died and he wasn't awarded the same pleasure. "I know there tactics and I'm certain we can overcome them with the right defense."

"Well general we are all ears and once that seamstress is up and in shape we will be ready for war" exclaimed David.

Goku followed closely behind his brother and David listened intently as he could between thoughts of ChiChi. He couldn't wait to get back and tell her that his brother was safe and see the look on her face. She would certainly be excited to know that he was well. He hoped that once everything was over that when he returned she'd be well. She had to; there'd be no way he'd live without her.

Radditz informed them every detail of the battle and how the men launched their attacks and then Krillen. The three men were busy sketching away forms of attacks and desperately looking for flaws in their scheme and Goku grew weary of all the commotion. Tired he made his way over to his tent to get some well needed rest. It wasn't long after he laid down on the thin sheets that he fell asleep despite the scattered rocks beneath him. Sleep had come easily to him after many previous restless nights; his brother was well.

When Goku final woke the sun was just beginning to fall behind the horizon and a view scattered stars could be seen. He yawn stretching and left the tent making his way to the river stream with his bristle brush. He found a secluded spot away from the few other soldiers that were bathing and begun to bathe. The crickets begun to sing, and Goku was lost in their song.

"So I'm assuming you didn't take my advice" interjected Radittz as he joined Goku.

Arching a brow in confusion Goku looked over to his older brother a smile on his face. He hadn't the slightest idea what his brother was referring to.

"You were miles away early when we planning. I'd like to say you were in shock but I can't admit that my assumed death could have such a pull on you. Do you still have feelings for the princess?" asked Radditz.

"Actually hearing you died was one of the worse news I received these past weeks. I just couldn't manage to believe it because I had seen you going out and you were healthy. I was shock and glad, I felt a weight lifted when I saw you. I never thought I'd get the pleasure of seeing you again and that felt horrible" answered Goku.

Silently they sat in the water lavishing the peace and joy of each other's company. "I wondered many days if Absalom had discovered that I was alive and if he'd kill you, Turles, and Grands. I didn't know how to return and how to go about sending word to the king without endangering you all."

"You always think about us first. I wish you would have returned and then we could have figured something out. The king could have had Absalom slain and we could have surely taken Teriok kingdom and you'd have been home. That doesn't matter though…I'm just glad you've made it" added Goku.

"You love her?" said Radditz his eyes meeting Goku's. He didn't have to hear Goku say the words because as he looked at his younger brother he could see the passion that burned inside him. "Funny how you end up loving the princess, you always went for the impossible. That stupid book of Dad's that you could never open but you were adamant to have it. Why couldn't you have just loved someone simple? Like Sephora she was beautiful and easy on the eyes and would have done anything for you. I'm afraid she'll break your heart."

"She may" tersely Goku replied. "She is sick. She did something I can't understand. I remember when you and Turles always said that one of these days I'd find myself wrapped up in a girl foolish games like you two always seemed to be. I knew in my mind those times that it'd never would happen because most every girl I met was pretty annoying. They were always giggling and chattering about the silliest things, but ChiChi…"

Goku couldn't help but think of the time she snuck over to his room and fell asleep at his side. She had an intoxicating charm that kept him like a spider's web would keep its prey. She excited something inside of him that no other woman ever had and no matter how he tried to blow it out it kept burning. "When do we attack?" said Goku shifting the conversation.

"Whenever Raven wakes up and starts to work on the uniform. It seems I wore her out pretty good. I really wish I had knew she was a girl. I would have never hit her so hard. She is a pretty skilled fighter I must say. She was able to not only block many of my attacks but give me a quite a few good ones. I was nearly worn out" Said Radditz laughing at the memory.

Goku couldn't help but laugh at the look on Radditz's face. They spent a few more hours relaxing in the cool river water before getting out and getting dress. Many of the men were in for the night when they arrived back at camp save for the three men on first watch and Krillen who sat next to David in front of the camp fire.

"So look who the cat brought in" sounded Krillen as he caught sight of Goku. "You were out pretty much the entire day man. Do you think you got enough beauty sleep?"

"Did you miss me" kid Goku as he took a seat next to Krillen giving him a hard pat on the back knocking him over.

"Hey, how about we keep those pats to a taps. I can't have you knock me around all the time" laugh Krillen, nervously as he sat back up.

"Sounds like a deal. So didn't anyone save me any food?" asked Goku, sheepishly as his stomach roar.

"I'm sorry buddy everything is gone. I was going to try and save some for you but as soon as I turned my back to bring some to David they finished it all" said Krillen.

"If you don't mind helping me catch some fishes and gathering a few things I could make something for the both of us" interjected Raven and instantly all the men looked in her direction.

"You're awake" said Goku.

"It would seem so. I'm hungry too" she said half laughing. "So do you think you will be able to help me? Then after eating I can get started on making those uniforms."

"Sure" agreed Goku jumping to his feet.

"Would you like a pair of extra hands" cut in Radditz, buoyantly.

"I guess" she said. "You can fish then, and Goku and I can gather some of other ingredients I need."

"You sure you don't want Goku to fish he is much better at it and I can help you gather the other items" said Radditz.

"General we're not going to war, only gathering a few things" she said self-assuredly.

"Ok than" he answered and hurried off to the river.

Raven looked over to Goku still wearing her full body suit. "So I was thinking we'd have some fish and mushroom stew. Sound good?"

"Delicious" he chirped following behind her after lighting a torch. They walked a distance away from the camp and for the length of their walk neither said a word. "So do you feel better?"

"Yes" she answered tersely. It seemed that all her answers were close ended and she was rather nervous. He hoped that she didn't think ill of Radditz or assume that he would hurt her.

"My brother wouldn't have hurt you if he known who you were. He feels awful about what happened. Honestly he does so I hope you aren't frighten by either of us" Said Goku, contritely.

"I'm not" she said. She took a few more steps forward scanning the area hoping to find the patch she'd seen on the way to the camp with scattered mushrooms.

"Ok. My brother says you're a skilled fighter do you mind me asking where you learned" said Goku. He held the torch high to try and have it light the path before them as much as possible.

"I do mind" she said. "Look if we are going…there they are!" She hurried over to the small patch of puffball mushrooms. "Here they are Goku" she exclaimed as she begun to pick up as much as she possible could. Goku came to her aid picking up as many as he could as well setting it in the basket they carried.

When the basket was full of the large white puffball mushrooms they started back. "These taste extremely well with fish and I saw a few berries that would make it great."

Something about the girl was strangely familiar the way she cooed over the tasty dish she'd make. His mind drifted away to ChiChi when she brought him the tasty cake biscuits that she said she'd spent the day making. "You remind me of someone."

"Me?" she asked innocently.

"Yes. She likes to cook and she does it pretty good" he admitted.

"Well I don't think she'll have anything on my cooking" said Raven.

"I haven't tasted your food yet, but I don't think you've tasted hers. I like to eat and she made the best pastry I've ever tasted" said Goku, dreamily.

"So this girl what is she to you?" inquired Raven.

"Amazing not like any girl I've ever met" answered Goku.

"Does she have money?" said Raven.

"Yes she has a lot in fact" said Goku openly.

"Certainly that is why you say she is so amazing! You'll be the heir to all her money if you marry" tiff Raven.

"No! I've never said anything about the money" said Goku.

"You don't have to say anything about it. Most guys go for a girl for money, and she must be pretty" added Raven.

"You're trying to push my buttons." Goku took the basket from Raven and speed up his pace.

"Trying? I think I've already done that! Why are you so upset? I'm only trying to understand if you really like this girl you're talking about" shouted Raven as she hurried behind him.

Goku kept a steady pace forward he didn't want to say anything more. When Raven final caught up to him they were nearly back to the camp and they walked the rest of the way in silence until they reached the berry bush. "This is the berries that I'd need" exclaimed Raven before picking a few and gathering them and she held out the bottom of her shirt piling them in it.

"Are they safe to eat?" asked Goku.

"Weren't you a farmer?" said Raven.

"Yes" Replied Goku, perplexed. "Hey how did you know that?"

"Um…I it's a small town" quickly she answered. "They'll be a nice flavor to the stew. We won't use to much just enough to give it a little taste. Hopefully your brother has caught some fish."

"He should have" said Goku. Before long they had reached back to the camp and Raven hurried away to the kitchen area and begun to prepare their meal. Goku watched her intently and caught her every now and then looking over at him. He wondered who she was under the full body suit, what was she hiding? He sat against a large tree off to the side of the camp but in eye sight of the blazing fire and before long drifted to sleep.

"Goku? Goku?" came the soft voice of Raven as she shook his shoulder waking him from slumber.

He jumped looking around frantically in a daze. "Where is she?" he said.

"Who Goku?" asked Raven a bowl clutched in her free hand.

He shook his head and rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly chuckling. "Sorry I just had a dream."

"Oh I see" said Raven. "Well I finished a few minutes ago sorry it took so long." She extended the bowl with the wooden spoon to Goku who took it gratefully.

"Thank you" he said with a wide smile.

Raven waited till Goku took his first scoopful and with a wider smile he scarf the rest in mere minutes. "So you liked it?"

"I loved it! It taste wonderful, it's the best thing I had since leaving the castle" he exclaimed ready to the lick the bowl.

"There is plenty more" she informed giggling at Goku's hungry antics.

"Don't say it to krillen or he'd certainly be mad at me all over, but I'd trade his cooking for yours any day" he said, ecstatically.

"Well thank you" she chirped standing up to make her way back over to the large pot. She returned back to Goku in a few minutes with a fresh bowl of soup in hand. He eagerly took the full bowl from her and greedily scarf that too down.

"Goku, I want to tell you sorry about what I said" she interjected as she took a seat next to him.

Goku looked up to Raven with a flashy smile and eyes full of forgiveness. "It's all forgiven- beside your food is way too good for me to be mad with you ever. "

"You're a great guy Goku, and I'm certain the girl you love loves you with all her heart" whispered Raven.

Goku set his empty bowl down and looked to Raven with full eyes. He wasn't certain if it was the words she said or the look in her eyes but he felt something burn in him at the words. It felt as if ChiChi had just spoken the words he longed to hear. Had she known ChiChi?

"Let me get you another bowl" said Raven and before Goku could question her she was off. She set down a few bowls full at his side each with their own spoon. "Well I'm going to go and get started on the sketches."

"Would you like me to join you?" asked Goku.

"Um...I'd love the company, but I think better in silence" she said politely and hurried off.

Goku watched her light a torch and hurried off into the darkness after entering her tent and grabbing a few essentials. He scarf down every bowl till his was full, and after cleaning up he decided to train. "Well training it is".
