3.14c Coupling

The Fates thought of Luke and dusted his thread
With clarity's yellow. They put in his head
That he should keep checking, in manner so subtle,
On actions between this unready couple.

The pattern was new but soon did they see it:
When upstairs of diner, did Luke referee it.
Like clockwork, did Luke, in guise of his work,
Pop up to check in, a moment to lurk.

So Jess set his watch to cycle around
And beep once or twice when Luke would be bound
To come up the stairs. They calmed when they ought.
In this way, they managed to rarely be caught.

But after (once Luke would go on his way)
Would Rory or Jess re-initiate play.
Would Rory grab collar and give it a tug,
Or Jess pull her waist to hold her so snug.

And soon would they find themselves quickly enthralled
And often, on cushions, horizontally sprawled.
The kisses progressed, the fingertips wandered,
And no earnest moment would either leave squandered.

'Til once again beeped the chime of his watch
And, with much regret, the two would dislodge
And straighten their shirts or straighten their pants
And straighten themselves, as wild eyes would dance.

And then they'd continue their prior debate,
The long standing convo which ne'er did abate,
Until, once again, would Uncle appear
To briefly observe them and lessen his fear.

Return of his uncle, a pet of their peeves,
Did only amuse them, so thick as good thieves.
The visits were quick. He never stayed long.
Once seeing them upright, he'd move right along.

And, in those good moments while they had been straightened,
Discussions, in them, desires awakened
Not just for the flesh, although there was that,
But also for minds to spar, in combat.

Should one of the two spark controversy
Then soon would they each lack any mercy
'Til each made their views, to other, imparted:
A sea of insights, the two of them charted.

And Rory did love the way he enthused;
The depths of his mind, so readily used.
She'd not known another so expertly apt
To take on a book with discussion so rapt.

So, really it seemed, Luke's actions did flop,
For, each time their kissing had been made to stop,
Debating with Jess just fueled her desire.
Though talk had been sanctioned, it just fanned the fire!

But, knowing that Luke would always be back,
The two didn't, much, their clothing impact.
Most certainly Jess did not handle her buttons
Since doing them up posed real time repercussions.

Instead were their hands just silently creeping
Beneath fabrics' layers, quite chastely in keeping.
And that's where there were when, once, were they spied,
When, into the room, did Lorelai stride!

Discomfort was had by all that were there.
They each, awkwardly, at nothing did stare.
Then, quickly, did Lorelai exit the room
To, downstairs, give Luke a lesson in doom.

Embarrassment did the two teens beset
But neither would feel the slightest regret.
And then did his watch decide it should chime
So, wryly, they laughed at such a poor time.

Then later that week, did Friday arrive.
And Lorelai's plans involving a drive
Into the big city were quite imminent.
Soon Alex's car would, their plans, implement.

And Rory would have some plans of her own.
Did Lorelai learn—so, fears, did she hone—
That Jess would be bringing her daughter back home
And, then, would the two remain all alone.

Proceeded the Elder to lay out her case
That Rory should stay at her grandparents' place.
Did Rory catch on to the deep-seated meaning:
'Gainst basic boy/girl stuff was she intervening.

But Rory assured her that it would be fine.
To think of that stuff, she hadn't the time.
Her reading and schoolwork and highbrow pursuits
Would not find, in passions, adept substitutes.

Her daughter's insistence preached distance galore
Though Lorelai couldn't have doubted it more.
But then, right on time, the doorbell did ring.
She'd just have to trust her bookish offspring.
