Chapter 12: Jess's POV

I kept my hood over my head and looked at the ground as I walked into the tournament. Kim had already started her fight. I sat next to Jack, crossing my arms. "How's she doing?" I asked quietly.

"So far, not too well," Jack replied, "How'd you do?"

"Phase one of my plan is complete," I started, "Phase two will commence in twenty-five minutes."

After five minutes, Kim was doing better in the competition and I was anxious to get to the police station. Another few minutes had gone by and Kim had won her first fight. "Whoo! Go Kim!" I cheered and the security guards looked at me.

"It's Jessica!" I heard one of them say.

My eyes widened. "Whoops," I muttered, "Gotta go." I got up and ran out the door.

I wasn't thrilled about being back at the Great Wall after what happened with Kai. I ran through the crowds of tourists with the security guards chasing after me.

I looked for the fastest way off of the Wall and to the town but the only thing I saw were oak trees. "Oh I'm going to regret this," I said as I ran to the edge of the Wall. I glanced at the security guards and stood at the edge. My heart pounded and I jumped, grabbing a sturdy tree branch.

I yelped as I looked at the ground below. I closed my eyes. "Just don't look down," I mumbled, "Don't look down, and you'll be fine."

I moved carefully towards the tree trunk and set my feet on a branch. I looked back at the Wall and saw the security guards talking about what to do and looking at me.

I smiled slightly, then looked at the ground below and felt dizzy. I closed my eyes tightly and looked at a lower branch, I reached out and grabbed it, letting my legs leave one branch and rest on a lower one.

I continued to climb down but three-fourths of the way, I reached out again and held on to another branch, but as I let go of the branch I had been holding on to, I lost my grip and fell.

I screamed and tried to grab another tree branch, but failed. I landed on my back and groaned. I got up, brushing off the dirt from my clothes, and ran away from the Great Wall.

My back ached and my head hurt but I continued to run. I took out my phone and called Martha. "Change of plans," I started, "I need you to meet me now."

"But I'm not ready," she protested.

"Yeah well hurry up," I snapped, "you have five minutes." I hung up.

-Ten Minutes Later-

Martha finally arrived at the police station. "I said five minutes, not ten," I said as I walked out from my hiding spot.

"Drake was asking questions," she told me.

I looked at the two people she had brought with her. "Ryan," I said in shock, "You... Drake...?"

He nodded and said, "yeah."

"But... you always seemed so happy... When did it happen?" I asked.

"I was ten," he replied, "my parents were killed a year later. I decided not to let everything that happened break me but, I was still too scared to disobey Drake, like you did."

"You're the only one that was broken, but didn't start working for Drake," Martha told me.

"I didn't want him to think that he won," I said and looked at the other person that Martha brought, a girl, "Who's she?"

"My name's Bella," she replied.

She looked about fourteen-years-old, she had a gothic sense of style and seemed annoyed, but her eyes showed pain. Same look I had after...

"He just started hitting you, hasn't he?" I asked.

She crossed her arms. "How can you tell?" she replied.

"I acted the same way you do: rebellious, angry, annoyed... but there's one thing that no one could ever notice, the pain in my eyes. It's in your eyes too, and no matter what you do, it will never go away, and you will never be able to hide it," I explained.

Bella was caught off guard and stared at me for a minute, then she noticed it. "I can see it, the pain," she mumbled, "So how do we get Drake arrested?"

Martha handed me the file and I said, "We don't have much proof, but with the four of us telling the police what Drake did, it'll be enough to at least have them check it out."

"Then why are we standing here talking?" Ryan asked, "Let's go."

We walked into the police station and everyone stared at me. "Ok, before you rush to arrest me, I have something to say," I started, "I did not kill my parents, but I know who did, my stepfather, Drake Baker."

"And do you have any proof of this?" the Chief of Police asked as he walked up to us.

I handed him the file. "This has everything that he's done to me," I told him, "Drake wrote it, it has his signature at the bottom."

He looked it over. "I seem to remember that you were pretty good at forging signatures, Miss. Wasabi," he said.

I sighed. "I'm done with that kind stuff, ok, I'm a good girl now... for the most part," I was quiet for a minute, "But I didn't forge this. Bella, Martha, Ryan, and I have all been through this, and we have the scars to prove it."

"Actually I don't have any scars," Bella told me quietly.

I gave her an annoyed look. "Do you have any form of marks at all?" I asked and she nodded, "Then that's good enough."

"Scars?" the Chief asked.

"Ryan," I said and looked at him. I nodded towards the Chief.

Ryan turned and lifted the back of his shirt. I closed my eyes when I saw the scars on his back. I looked at the police chief. "Martha and I also look like that," I told him, "And Bella will look like that if you don't arrest Drake!"

Ryan turned back around and added, "Yeah and besides the scars she'll have, she'll be an orphan!"

"And all four of you can say that Mr. Baker has done something worth investigating?" the Chief asked.

"Yes," we replied in unison.

"And you're not lying?" he asked.

"Why would we lie about something like this?" we said and looked at each other questionably.

The Chief was quiet for a minute as he reread the file I had given him. "Ok, we'll check it out," he told us.

We left the police station and I said, "You guys do know that if they arrest Drake we'll all have to testify, right?"

"Yeah," they replied.

I looked at Bella, "In the meantime, keep an eye on your parents, ok?"

She nodded and we all went our separate ways. After a few minutes of walking, Bella ran up to me. "Need something?" I asked her.

"Yeah," started, "You said that you acted the way I do when this happened, when did you stop acting like this? When did you recover?"

I looked at her and said, "I haven't yet, and I supposed I'll never fully recover. But here's what you want to do, get away from the place that the pain took place, make some new friends, learn to trust them, and forget about everything bad that happened. In other words, let it go. Move on."

"Is that what you did?" she asked.

"Sort of," I looked at my phone, "I'm still learning to trust and forget. But it's what I'm trying to do."

"Ok, thanks," she smiled slightly.

I nodded and she left.
