Lupa and Remus had been living in the forest for six months and had developed a routine. Their first weeks had been spent exploring the forest and seeing what it contained. With the help of the book Emily had given them, they identified the herbs they came across and learned what they were used for. Remus also found the river that flowed through the forest to feed the Green lake. Learning to catch the fish had been a challenge. Neither child had realized how slippery fish were. They lost more fish than they caught in those first days.
After a few weeks, they ventured into the village to see what the trade was like. Before doing so, they changed their names, taking the names of their favorite book characters. Lupa became Star and Remus became Night. This was done as a way to remain hidden from their parents or anyone who might be searching for them.
The people of Green Lake village were eager to trade for herbs. Their forest gatherers weren't very good at recognizing the various herbs. So they were happy to make a deal with the siblings. Star and Night would bring them herbs from the forest and would trade them for other things, mainly food. In return for the herbs, the villagers also agreed not to ask questions about the siblings.
Moony also liked their new home. Lupa had spent the last six full moons chasing Moony all over the forest as the werewolf explored the new area. She was more exhausted than Remus was come morning. Still, it was a small price to pay as Remus suffered minimal injuries.
"Star." Night called as he entered their clearing.
"Night?" Star said, looking up from where she was building the fire. "What's wrong? Why are you back early?"
Night didn't usually return from exploring the forest until just before dinner. There was still another hour to go before it would be ready tonight.
"I came across an unfamiliar scent while I was out exploring."
Star stood up, brushing bits of wood off her trousers.
"Unfamiliar how?"
"I'm not really sure. Part of me feels like I've come across it before. But I don't know where."
Now it was Star's turn to frown.
"What does Moony make of it?"
"He's the part that feels like he recognizes it."
Star's frown deepened. "And he doesn't have any feelings about it?"
Night shook his head.
"Not really. He doesn't seem to care one way or the other." He looked up at her with eyes churning with emotions. "Lu, what does this mean?"
The use of her childhood nickname told Star exactly how scared her brother was though he was trying not to show it.
"I don't know Rem." She said honestly. "But for now, don't worry about it. All it is, is a vaguely familiar scent. It doesn't mean anything."
Night nodded, once again displaying the thrust he had in Star. Star pushed the uneasy feeling she had to the side and turned her attention back to the fire. That was something to be contemplated later once Night was asleep.
"Now, why don't you make yourself useful for once and go get some wood for the fire before it burns out."
"Oi!" Night cried. "I resent that. I'm useful."
"Are you now?"
Night saw the smile playing around the corners of his sister's mouth and smiled himself.
"Yup. I'm more useful than you are."
Star stood up at that and turned to face her brother. There was an amused look on her face as if she wasn't buying it.
"Well then, why don't you show me exactly how useful you are."
Night grinned before shooting off into the forest.
Star shook her head and turned to her attention to preparing their dinner of fish and berries. The berries needed no preparation beyond being separated into two piles. The fish however, needed to be scaled, cooked, and sliced.
Night returned with the first armload of firewood as Star was scaling the fish. He returned with the second with the fish were cooking. By the time he returned with the third and final armload, Star had removed the fist from the fire and was slicing them up.
Night's fish weren't cooked as long as Star's since the full moon was in three days.
Remus was slightly impatient as he waited for Star to finish cutting his fish. As soon as she handed him his plate, Night began wolfing down his food, barely taking the time to chew it. Star shook her head at her brother's wolfish tendencies and ate her food at a much slower pace. Before she was half way done with her dinner, Night had jumped up and gone to wash his plate off in the bucket of water they kept for that purpose. He put his plate away before shooting off into the forest to do some more exploring. Star just let out a sigh. Night's restlessness would only grow worse over the next few days. Running through the forest would do him good. Hopefully he would be somewhat tired when he returned.
The next day passed in a similar fashion.
It was a gathering day. Star went fishing while Night collected herbs. Normally, they would work together since time passed faster when they worked together rather than separately. However, Night was far too restless today to have any patience for fishing so Star sent him to collect the herbs she would need for after the full moon. While she sat on the edge of the river, she wondered what was causing her brother to be more restless than usual this full moon.
It wasn't until after dinner that things got interesting. Star had just finished washing and putting away the last of the dishes when Night let out a low growl. Star started at the unexpected noise and started to turn towards her brother. Before she could do so, Night had grabbed her arm and pulled her behind him. He was staring straight ahead into the forest, he teeth bared in a snarl. At this point, Star was beyond confused.
"Night…?" She began.
Another growl from her brother cut her off and Star shut her mouth quickly. Thankfully she didn't have to wait long for an answer. Less than a minute after she had spoken, a shadowy figure made its way out of the trees towards them. Night hadn't moved so much as an inch towards the visitor. If anything, he moved backwards, forcing Star to step back as well.
"Who are you? What do you want?" Night growled.
"Is that anyway to greet an old friend?" The visitor asked. A male, judging from the sound of the voice. Though Star couldn't be sure, considering the voice sounded almost like a growl.
"You should invite me to sit by the fire." The visitor continued.
Star could sense that her brother wasn't going to make the first move and so made it herself. She slowly placed a calming hand on Night's shoulder. He tensed at the unexpected move before relaxing some. He allowed her to move out from behind him.
"Please, won't you come and sit by our fire?" Star said, calling on the manners she had learned as a child.
There was a flash of white in the setting sun as the man gave a quick smile.
"See boy, that's more like it. You could take a lesson or two from your sister on how to treat guests."
He moved to sit down on one side of the fire and Star and Night sat on the other.
"Who are you?" Star asked, her voice indicating that she wanted an answer.
"My name is Fenrir Greyback." The man answered, his voice taking on a slightly oily quality.
"Now, tell us what you're doing here." Star demanded.
Normally she wasn't this rude towards strangers. Even ones that had somehow stumbled upon the sanctuary she and her brother had built. Yet there was something about this man that rubbed her the wrong way. It was almost as if she had met him before. But Star knew she would remember meeting someone like Greyback.
"I have a…shall we call it a proposition, for you and your sister." Greyback said
Night didn't answer. He only raised an eyebrow and stared at the visitor, clearly waiting for him to continue.
"I think it would be best if you came and lived with me."
Star asked "Why?"
Night answered. "Because he's a werewolf."
Startled, she turned to look at her brother. Night was looking at her with the most serious look she had ever seen on his young face. In all of his short eleven years, Night had never once looked so serious. She glanced back at the man and wondered how he knew. There were no obvious signs that the visitor was a werewolf. She turned back to Night with a questioning look in her eyes. Night understood.
"His is the strange scent I came across yesterday in the forest. At first I didn't know what it was. I kept thinking about it all last night after dinner when I went back out to explore. Then it occurred to me that the scent was similar to the one Moony leaves when he runs around the night of the full moon. The only thing I don't know is why it didn't bother me that there was another werewolf here." Night explained.
"You are right in saying that I am a werewolf. I spend a lot of time traveling, searching for other werewolves who don't have a place in the world. They come and live with me and are accepted for who they are."
Night and Star could believe that. While werewolves were mostly regarded as creatures of fairytales, there were people out there who knew the creatures were real. Most of them had a family member who had been bitten and turned. Unfortunately, the prejudice against werewolves meant that most werewolves were left by their family to fend for themselves. The ones like Night who were not left to fend for themselves were still treated with hatred and often ended up leaving anyway.
"What about my sister?" Night asked. "She's not a werewolf."
"I'm sure your sister will be just fine on her own." Greyback said dismissively.
"I'm not going anywhere without my sister." Night declared.
"Then you can bite her and change her so that she is like you."
Both siblings gasped at that. Star knew how afraid Night was of accidently biting someone and subjecting them to this curse. It was his greatest fear. He often had nightmares about it in the days leading up to the full moon. Night couldn't believe that this man had suggested he bite his sister. Star, who had accepted him and loved him despite the wolf. Who stayed up full moon after full moon to keep him company throughout the night and stop him from tearing himself to shreds. It was his greatest fear that he would one day accidently bite his sister and subject her to this curse.
"I would never bite my sister and subject her to this horrible curse."
Greyback finally lost his patience and showed his true colors.
"You will come with me voluntarily. Or I will make you." He growled.
"I'd like to see you try." Night growled back.
To their surprise, Greyback simply stood up and left. There were no backwards glances or parting threats. He just left. Leaving behind two very confused children. As soon as Night was certain he was well out of earshot he turned to his sister.
"Star, you don't think he will make me, do you?" He asked, fear in his voice.
Star gave an internal sigh. The fear in Night's voice told her that her little brother was back. While she was grateful that Night had stood up to the other werewolf and put himself between him and her, Star preferred her brother the way he was now. This was the Night she had raised.
"I think he will try cub. But I won't let him." Star said, pulling Night in close and wrapping her arms around him.
"I promise." She whispered into his hair.
AN: Greyback is a hard character to write. I think it's because I had him start off as a nice guy. There's absolutely no indication of him having the capability of being nice when he wants to in the books or movies and very little in Fanfiction. Therefore I had to guess at it. Let me know how I did. I wanted him to seem nice because in this world, he sees himself as a "nice guy" who helps other werewolves by giving them a place where they belong. In return, they're grateful to him and do as he asks. Greyback has also learned through experience that if he starts off as the "nice guy", he gets his way more often.
Now, I need your help. I'm looking for a story on Fanfiction that I came across a few months ago. I don't know the name of the story but it involves Remus walking into a brothel in another country, France I think, and showing the woman at the desk a picture of Sirius and asking for a man who looks similar to Sirius. To his surprise, he finds Sirius is working there. This story takes place after Sirius escaped from Azkaban. I know it is a completed story and I think the rating is M but I'm not sure. If you come across it or know the name of the story, will you let me know? I've been trying to find it again for a while now and have had no luck.
Hopefully I'll have the next chapter up Sunday but we'll see. I am working now and I have to help my brother will homework as well.
