"Alright Midnight, time to go!"
The Doctor, Ditzy and Midnight had all decided to go to the beach for a day of fun, and hopefully a day with no aliens or magical disasters interrupting their activities. So far it had been wonderfully peaceful, with the exception of the Doctors surfing lesson which had ended in much splashing and yelling and giggling. That last one mostly from to girls. They'd had lots of fun, but now Celestia was beginning to lower the sun and soon they would have to head back to the TARDIS.
"Oh, can't we play just one more game? Please, please, please please pleasepleaseplease!" The young filly coaxed
"I don't know, it's getting pretty late," Said Ditzy
"Well I don't see why we can't play one more game," the Doctor interjected "As long as it's quick." He grinned and joined in Midnights 'please' chant until Ditzy finally gave in, shaking her head.
"Hooray! Lets play hide and go seek! Onetwothree not it!" The filly raced away down the beach, without even waiting for the seeker (who, by the way, was Ditzy) to start counting. After a few seconds of running on the sand she veered into the forest bordering the beach to find better shelter.
When she started panting with the effort of running, Midnight stopped and ducked under a bush to hide. The beach had disappeared from view and the alicorn giggled quietly as she caught her breath, her young mind convinced that nopony would ever find her hiding spot. However, as time passed, her excitement turned into fear. The darkness surrounded her, and although she had never minded the dark before, she had also never been alone in it either. She crawled out from her hiding spot with her mind set on finding the others before the monsters (which almost all young children see when they are alone and afraid) found her.
The beach would have been the place to go, but there was a problem. In her frenzy to hide, Midnight had not kept track of which direction she was running and could not remember the way back. She was lost. It felt like hours of walking and quietly calling out for the Doctor and Ditzy before she saw the light through the trees. It was small and flickering, probably a campfire, and Midnight was so relieved to find evidence of somepony else that it didn't even cross her mind that her friends probably wouldn't have stopped their search for her to build a fire.
She crashed through the line of trees shouting, "Doctor! Ditzy!" before stopping cold in her tracks. Before her sat two unicorns she had never seen before staring at the newcomer. The first was blue with a neat black mane and a top hat resting against his horn. His demeanor radiated a sort of regal importance and confidence. The second was young, probably around Midnights age. She was also blue, but a much paler shade of the color and, while not having quite the same effect as the other, appearing quite weak and afraid in comparison, she too had o sort of powerful aura about her. Midnight had not met many unicorns, and certainly never seen any this close before, so she wondered if all unicorns had such an air about them, or if these were two especially powerful unicorns. The first spoke with a deep voice.
"Hello, child. What brings you out to the forest so late? Surely you are not out here alone."
Midnight was not sure how to respond. She had never met these two before, but the stallions voice coaxed her to trust him. She hesitated for a moment, but noticed that the unicorn filly was shifting uncomfortably. She was just as nervous as Midnight was.
"Um... no. I was looking for my friends, we got separated. Do you... could you tell me which way the beach is?" she asked timidly.
"Of course, but my dear... I'm sorry, what was your name?" replied the unicorn in his trusting voice.
"Oh I'm Mid..." She started, before remembering the name she had chosen to use around strangers. She did not know quite what time they were in currently, but if her parents were looking for her, she did not want to go around telling everypony she happened to meet her name. "I'm Quicksilver."
"Charmed," He said, bowing his head politely. "But as I was saying, Silver, It is very dark tonight, and much too easy to get lost. Please, stay with us tonight and in the morning we shall be happy to help you find your friends."
"Really?" she asked hopefully. She still did not know these unicorns, but she did not want to go back into the dark forest, so when he nodded his head she quickly scurried away from the trees towards the fire and sat down next to the filly.
"Oh how rude of me!" exclaimed the stallion suddenly. "I have not even introduced myself. My name is Legerdemain, magician extraordinaire, and this is my niece Trixie. Trixie, would you go fetch us some more firewood?" she jumped up quickly, as soon as he had finished speaking, apresumably to get firewood, stopping only briefly to look back at the firelights edge. "Now, my dear," he continued when Trixie had left "We have time to talk. You said you were with friends. What about your parents? Won't they worry that you are out so late?"
"Oh no, I mean they might, but i'm not worried about that," she leaned in closer, as if to whisper a secret, "I ran away." Midnight pulled back and returned to speaking normally "I've been traveling with my friends for a while."
"Ah! that must be fun. Me? I love traveling. I have explored nearly every corner of Equestria and who knows, maybe someday I'll go to another country. But are you sure you don't miss your family? Are they... like you?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, you know, are they alicorns?" He asked the question so sincerely and eagerly that it shocked Midnight. While it was true that she had been traveling for almost a year already, she had not seen much of normal pony society and it had never occurred to her that alicorns would be any more uncommon than the other three types of ponies.
"Of course,"
"Hmm, interesting,"
It was then that Trixie trotted back into the camp with a bundle of sticks almost as large as she was levitating behind her. "Well, Trixie, you're finally back. See if you can entertain our guest for a while, I need to think." So as Legerdemain trotted to the far side of the fire and lay down contently, trixie neared the little alicorn and quietly began tossing sticks onto the fire.
"Hello, Trixie." She glanced over shyly and mumbled a reply.
"Hello."
"Have you been travelling with your uncle long?" She shook her head and glared at the fire.
"Do you enjoy it?" Midnight received the same response.
"That's funny, I love traveling! Seeing new places, meeting new ponies,"
"You should leave." The unicorns voice was low so Midnight almost missed the words. At first she wondered if she had upset or offended the filly, but when she glanced over, Trixies glare had turned into an expression of worry.
"What? Why?"
"Because you are nice, and because you are an alicorn, and because that's not a good combination for a pony alone in the forest with us."
She seemed sincere, but the unicorn had turned back to the fire and Midnight could not imagine what she had been talking about. Both of the unicorns seemed so kind, although Trixie was a bit more introverted than her uncle. It was probably just after midnight now (the time, not the pony) and the young alicorn was very tired, but hesitant to sleep because both of the unicorns were still wide awake. Suddenly, Legerdemain turned around. He stood, stretched, and looked to the unicorn filly who was still standing in silence.
"Trixie, we have work to do," she turned to him, startled or afraid, Midnight couldn't tell which.
"What? Now? Shouldn't we rest and begin again tomorrow?" She definitely sounded afraid of the stallion.
"No, we can rest afterwards, but morning is too long to wait with such a powerful magic source so close." his words started out in their previous kind manner, but slowly descended into something much more malicious. Midnight became nervous. She had no idea what he was talking about, but his new tone frightened her. She began to stand slowly.
"Uncle..."
"Trixie you will obey me!"he snapped, viciously. His eyes glowed momentarily and his horn swirled with magic, but his composure returned as he turned to Midnight, though Trixie trembled behind her uncle.
"Now, Silver, an alicorn shouldn't be wandering around by herself at night, especially not one so young," she was scared, something was about to happen but she didn't know what. She should run but her legs seemed locked in place. The Unicorn stallion grinned savagely. "Especially not with me around," His horn lit up with a fiery blue that shot towards Midnight like lightning. She was able to hear her name being called from deeper in the forest before she collapsed with pain. That was all she could feel, darkness and pain.
"Midnight!" the Doctor raced towards the alicorn, followed closely by Ditzy. a glance told him what he needed to know. "What are you doing to her?"
"Hello Doctor, don't you remember me? Perhaps not. I am Legerdemain! I take any magic that I want! Normal ponies, unicorns, pegasi, earth ponies, their magic is weak. I have been seeking magical artifacts to drain, but an alicorn! Even a young ones magic is immense! I had only thought there were two true alicorns left!"
"Doctor, what's a true alicorn?" Ditzy asked quietly.
"I don't know," he whispered back "but lets focus on the real problem, alright?" she nodded. "Legerdemain, you had better release her right now!"
"Oh Doctor, what are you going to do to stop me?" The Doctor charged. Legerdemain only laughed, stopping him with a blue bolt of magic which streamed away from the rest of the bolt, still draining Midnights power. He tried again and Ditzy went around the other side but they could not get near the unicorn or Midnight. Soon, they were too beat up to move, although they tried.
"Stop it!" Trixie charged from behind her uncle over to stand in front of the shaking alicorn. He faltered in his spell.
"Trixie, what are you doing?!" he roared.
"I've had enough! Taking magic from items is one thing, but this is different!" the little fillys voice was shaking. "You're hurting her!"
"Trixie," he started testily. "Move."
"No."
"Trixie Lulamoon get out of the way this instant!"
"I. Said. No!" she cried.
He roared in anger, sending his magic stealing blast towards the two fillies.
Trixies horn exploded with magic as Midnight managed to open her eyes, before collapsing again. A glowing pink dome surrounded them, crackling and shifting as if made of lightning. Legerdemain spell was broken, and he couldn't get past the shield, no matter how he tried.
"Trixie, you will regret this!" he screamed as he raced off.
"We... have to... catch him," the Doctor panted, gaining consciousness. Trixie trotted over to him.
"You have to rest, stay with your friends," she gestured to Ditzy and Midnight, both knocked out from exhaustion.
"You're right," he sighed.
Eventually, everypony woke up and Trixie told them that she had been traveling with her uncle since her parents had died. He didn't have much magic of his own so he took magic, but this was the first time he had ever tried to take it from an actual pony.
The shield she had made was the first time her magic had worked, besides basic levitation. Trixie had begun to believe that she didn't have any real magic of her own either. Soon everypony, even Midnight, was well enough to walk back to the TARDIS. The trio entered it one by one, but Midnight turned before closing the doors.
"Thank you Trixie, You're a great unicorn. Great, and powerful."
"Yes, I am the... the Great and Powerful Trixie!" they smiled.
"Yes you are,"
The Doctor trotted over. "Are you sure you'll be okay on your own Trixie?"
"Yes, there's a town not too far from here, We were supposed to go there next. The ponies there are really nice and I know how to take care of myself."
"All right then, if you're sure, come on Midnight, off we go!"
"Coming Doctor!" she turned to enter the TARDIS but paused before shutting the doors. "Hey Trixie, watch this, you're going to love it,"
Trixie stared in amazement as the blue box faded away.
Hey everypony! Pinkiepie told me about the fourth wall and I just wanted to thank everypo... um... everybody who has read this far, you're great! Also, if you have any ideas for adventures we could go on I would love to hear them! ( Sometimes we run out of ideas and end up sitting in the TARDIS doing nothing)
