It seemed like an eternity before the alarm was shut off and the crowds dispersed, Olivia was straining over the heads of doctors and nurses' trying to get some idea of what the hell was going on. Finally Alex appeared, she looked pale and sickly but to Olivia's surprise and relief she was awake. She rushed into the room without thinking and was instantly at Alex's side. It wasn't until that point Olivia noticed that Alex wouldn't even look at her.

"Alex, H-how are you feeling?", Olivia silently noted the uneasy tone of voice she seemed to have adopted.

"Just great Olivia, considering the night I have had", Alex pushed back the blanket and swung her legs off the opposite side of the bed. She went to stand but waivered and grasped the edge of the bed. Olivia was at her side immediately trying to support her and guide her back to bed.

"Where are you going? You need rest", Olivia tried to help Alex back into bed but was pushed away. "Alex, what's wrong?", Olivia stepped back and hoped Alex would finally look at her.

"If you need to ask me that Liv then I'm not going to waste my time answering", Alex grabbed her clothes from a belongings bag and went to pull the curtain around the bed. Liv was starting to get a bit annoyed, it was like Alex had completely shut down. After everything bad that had happened couldn't they at least talk to each other about it like adults? "Could I have a minute to get dressed please", Alex waited patiently for Olivia to oblige and leave the room but she wasn't budging.

"Alex, I'm not going anywhere", Olivia folded her arms in an attempt to appear defiant.

"I am not doing this now Olivia, I want to go home and sleep", Alex abandoned her attempts to kick Liv out and proceeded to get changed out of her hospital gown.

"Good, I'll go see about getting you discharged and then I'll take you home", Olivia went to leave the room but Alex stopped her.

"No Olivia, I am going home alone. I need time to process all this", Alex sat again clearly exhausted.

"Look Alex, I have been doing some thinking and I've decided.."

"Don't even say it, I have had enough of everything going wrong and you getting scared and running away. I just want my life to go back to how it was before you came knocking on my door in the middle of the night. Please leave me alone", Alex finally looked her in the eyes and Liv was shaken by the conviction in her tired eyes.

"But you need someone to keep an eye on you after you've been discharged", Olivia wasn't sure what else to say.

"Can you not stay with Elliot for a few days? I need to be alone right now", Alex retrieved her cell phone from her bag. Olivia realised this was probably for the best, a few days apart to recuperate and Alex might be willing to talk about everything properly.

"Sure, whatever you need", Olivia left the room to grab a nurse. She paused hearing Alex on the phone.

"Hey Casey… Don't worry I'm fine…yeah I could use a lift…great, see you in a minute", Olivia decided to find Elliot and get going; it was very clear she wasn't needed.

A few days turned into a week and it got increasingly harder for Olivia to pick up the phone. She sat daydreaming at her desk one morning when Cragan pulled her into his office. She slumped into a chair and waited, he looked as miserable as she did.

"How's Alex?", the mention of her name made Liv jump.

"She's fine", Olivia was in no mood to discuss personal troubles with her captain.

"Look I need to ask you a big favour and it's okay if you say no but you are the only person I trust with something like this", Olivia noted that he seemed to be speaking as a friend rather than her boss.

"What is it?", Olivia couldn't help being intrigued.

"I need you to go up to Boston and work with the Local PD on an investigation, I would go myself if my situation allowed it", Cragan seemed particularly stressed.

"How long for?".

"Well until the investigation is closed. They're having trouble up there and a lieutenant Cavanagh has asked for a special victim's detective to lend a hand", he began writing down contact details; he must have assumed Liv had already agreed.

"When do I need to be up there?"

"As soon as possible really. Here is the number of the lieutenant in Boston. We'll sort out somewhere for you to stay when you get there", the decision was made. Olivia took the number and left the office with a brief goodbye to Cragan. Elliot wasn't at his desk yet, she would call him from the car. There was only one person she absolutely had to talk to before she left and it was a conversation she was not looking forward to.

The drive to the DA's offices was made faster by the mild anxiety Liv was experiencing. How was she going to tell Alex she was leaving without it sounding like she was running away again? Well she had agreed to this rather quickly maybe she was running away.

Soon she was at Alex's door, she could see movement inside through the frosted glass; somebody was there. Liv knocked timidly and waited for the instruction to enter as she would from any other ADA she had dealings with. She entered slowly, Alex was behind her desk jotting notes on a legal pad whilst reading a brief. It took her several moments to look up and realise it was Olivia standing in her office. Alex just looked at her, clearly waiting for Liv to talk first.

"How are you Alex?", Olivia waited patiently near the door.

"I'm fine thanks, How are you?", Alex returned to her notes clearly not ready to talk yet.

"I'm okay… Well actually I am pretty miserable. I miss you Alex", Olivia hated that she sounded so emotional but she couldn't stop it.

"What are you doing here Liv?"

"Ookay, I have to go out of town for a few weeks", Olivia suddenly felt calm and professional again.

"Of course you do", Alex smiled to herself and this infuriated Olivia.

"Okay well I'll see you around", Olivia was heading for the door before her anger got the better of her. She was half way out the door before Alex spoke.

"Olivia wait", she turned and tried to take the look of annoyance off her face. "I will call you when I am less busy with work". Olivia laughed in disbelief before leaving, she was out of the office building and back to the car before she finally let herself feel the anger building inside of her. Banging on the steering wheel with her fist a few times, Liv could not make sense of her feelings. Whose fault was this breakdown in her relationship with Alex? Probably hers, she reasoned. As she sat there in the parking garage she reluctantly realised that maybe this relationship was not meant to last.

She drove out of the building away from Alex and New York; she was in Boston five hours later.

This is it for this story. I now plan on starting a cross over between this story's universe and that of my other story 'Doctor who?' from the Rizzoli and isles universe. So if you want to find out what happens between Olivia and Alex read 'Doctor Who?' and wait very patiently for me to start my other story :) I know i am terrible at posting with any kind of regularity but as a student I am stupid busy so I apologise.
