"Come back ye scurvy sea dog!"

"NO! WE WILL NEVER SUBMIT TO YOU"

Celestia pounced at her little sister who screamed and ran away, giggling. They often played make believe. Luna especially loved the play acting. She enjoyed the running and the tumbling and the giggling with her sister who was often caught up in her studies. Celestia had been accepted for special training in raising the sun, a true honor among unicorns because most did not have magic strong enough to raise the celestial body. She worked and trained with six other unicorns, including Cover the Clever, each morning. There used to be many more but they had refused to move so now the team struggled with its few members. Luna always slept in much too late to help with the sun, but one night she had stayed out past her bedtime and saw the unicorns raise the moon. She was awed by the night and its beauty that she had never before experienced. Ponies told her legends of the moon, about how it held magic over the water and caused hidden monsters to reveal themselves and that moonlight could even penetrate a ponys mind and see her dreams. Soon Luna was begging her parents to extend her bedtime so she could help with the raising of the moon. They happily agreed.

"Gotcha!" Called a giggling Celestia, trapping her sister under her hooves. Their parents smiled from the bed, glad for the joy and safety of their little ones.

A knock came at the door.

"Come in." Called their mother, not even glancing away from her fillies until the four ponies stepped in.

"Greetings, friends, how have you been?" Caelus began.

"Very well, thank you," spoke Starswirl "We come with news from the vote which concerns you."

That afternoon the ponies of Equestria had held a vote to make some very important decisions about the future of their new country. Ponies from all the tribes attended and between tallying up the votes and settling disputes between the tribes (much fewer than in the past, but old habits die hard) it had taken much longer than expected.

"What is it?" Said Astrum, on edge "Are we no longer welcome here?"

"Oh no no no," Starswirl was quick to reply "Quite the opposite in fact."

The Alicorns seemed confused. The adults did anyway, the fillies had dived behind the bed and were still giggling furiously. Neither Alicorn asked for an explanation, but none was needed. Clover was more than eager to explain everything.

"We discussed many things during our meeting, one such issue was who should be appointed to lead us." He began. Caelus started to ask why the previous leaders would not simply continue their duties, but Smart cookie provided an early answer.

"There were several reasons, of course. First of all, nopony trusts them much anymore. They were in charge when the windegoes came the first time. Second of all, the tribes are trying to become one combined society, so we want our leader, or leaders, to represent all of the ponies, not just one type. They must represent everything we want for our nation. Love. Friendship. Harmony."

"That's a lot to put on a pony, how did you ever find anypony?"

Private Pansy spoke up in her soft voice "Well, it's not official yet, but we did vote and everypony was very enthusiastic."

"It was unanimous."

"I've never seen them so united on anything in my life!"

"Which is why," Starswirl stepped forward, cutting the others off. "We hope you will kindly accept the appointment, your highnessess."

All four representatives bowed fervently towards the two fillies who had finally stopped wrestling in their curiosity. Astrum stood up, alarmed. She looked at Caelus, as of to confirm she had heard correctly, then back at the smaller ponies in front of her.

"Y-y-your h-highnessess?"

"Well, yes. Of course they are too young at the moment, you will rule until they come off age, however Celestia and Luna were chosen and..." Astrum cut him off.

"Wait, you can't do this! You can't put this kind of pressure on my children! They're only fillies! And besides we're strangers here. They can't... We can't..."

Astrum was close to tears, luckily Pansy spoke up. "Really, we're all strangers to this land. None of us have been here all that long. Besides, I know you're their mother, you're just looking out for them, but isn't this the girls decision?"

Astrum choked back her fears. She looked towards her husband, then to her daughters. Nopony seemed quite sure what to say next. Luna broke the silence.

"D-did everypony really vote for us?"

"They did."

The girls glanced at each other.

"I don't want to be a princess."Celestia said matter of factly, "Mummy says princessing is boring and hard and they never get to be with other ponies."

For a moment there was tension in the air, but the alicorn fillies grinned at each other and Luna finished her sisters thought.

"We could be Equestia's guardians though, guardians sounds much more fun."

And so it was decided that Celestia and Luna would be the guardians, still under the name 'princesses' once they were old enough. Until then their parents would rule in their stead and they would be trained to take on the role. However, being a guardian is a lot harder than either of them expected.

Hi everypony! good to be back! Yeah, I know, not the most exciting chapter, but hey, it had to be done. inspiration drawn from 'the diary of the two pony sisters' of which I've only read the first two chapters. Nothing but the show is technically cannon in this story, but I take ideas.
