Read chapter 11 if you haven't already.
Two weeks later
It was finally time. Gavroche could hardly contain his excitement; he was finally going to go outside today. He was sitting on the side of the bed, his feet over the edge. Gavroche looked at his feet and smiled at the shiny shoes he was wearing. Jolly had taken God knows how long helping Gavroche put the boot on his hurt foot, being extremely careful as to not bother the injury any further. Gavroche looked in the mirror across from him and smiled even wider. For once, he was wearing clothes that didn't have holes or tears. He was wearing a white shirt with a vest, and a new Jacket. His pants were the perfect length and his boots fit so well he couldn't stop smiling.
The door opened revealing Jolly and Courfeyrac. When Courfeyrac moved from in front of Jolly, he revealed a long wooden object in the medical student's hand.
"Fey, wha's that?"
Jolly answered for him.
"It's a Crutch, Gav. You still can't put all your weight on that foot so you'll need to use this to help."
The boy moaned, but allowed Jolly to help him stand with the aid of the crutch.
Finally, the trio left the room that Gavroche had stayed in for the past few weeks. The three walked to the main room where the rest of the Amis waited. As soon as they saw Gavroche, they stopped talking abruptly, every one grinning uncontrollably.
"Wha's goin on?" Gavroche asked, looking up at Courfeyrac.
"Gavroche, we uh…. We have a surprise for you." Courfeyrac motioned to Enjloras, who handed him a paper.
"Gavroche, do you know what this is?"
"No, I can't read, Fey."
The young student looked up at the Amis, who were all on the edge of their seats.
"Gav, this says that legally, from now on, you no longer live with Therdanier."
"You mean papa?" Gavorche asked with fear in his eyes.
"No, Vroche, he is not your papa anymore." Marius said.
"Then who-"
"Gav, from now on, you're part of the Amis. Officially."
Gavroche stood shocked for a moment, before he burst out laughing, along with the entire Amis. After a few minutes of pure laughter, Gavroche stopped.
"Wait, so does this mean I belong to the entire Amis?"
"Well, not exactly."
"Then what?"
Courfeyrac lowered down so he could look the gamin in the eye.
"Gav, remember my promise, that I would never let anything hurt you?"
Gavroche nodded.
"Well, now, legally, I'm your guardian."
Gavroche laughed even louder now, and the whole Amis laughed again with him. Finally they could know that no one would hurt Gavroche again. No one could hurt their little gamin.
