Chad takes over Abby and puts Sonny in the office. He pops in regularly, with phony reasons, but in his state of mind, Sonny doesn't feel like smirking about it. His friends' support is essential. He's placed his cellphone on the desk, and is waiting for it to ring or signal a text. Nothing else matters. He needs to feel the ground under his feet once more, know where he stands. The door opens again but this time, Chad doesn't enter right away and Sonny can hear him ask to someone behind "T isn't there, yet?" One minute later, he sits in front of his business partner and remarks "T called about a personal emergency. You think it's true? Maybe, he just have a new girl to chase." Sonny looks up from his subdued waiting trance and replies "No idea." Chad pinches his lips. He mumbles something, but Sonny doesn't ask him what. He's hurting. He wants Will, the Will who loved him, who could only see him.
T comes later in the day, to apologize and say he's ready to take an extra shift to compensate. Chad looks contrite and pats his shoulder, thanking him and saying it won't be necessary. Sonny emerges from the dullness to ask "T, do you have news from Will? Do you know where he is?" T gapes like a goldfish and stammers "Well, in fact, the thing is, you see, he's my best mate and I can't... It's not that you... but..." Chad pushes him outside while Sonny enters a new emotional state. Will doesn't want to see him. T knows something and he's not allowed to tell him. Will has his flaws but he's not a coward. Or he's too busy... Sonny's lungs fill with rage, which takes him out of his lethargy and he decides to ask for answers. He sends texts to about everyone, Sami, Marlena, Payne... He doesn't ask Lucas anything, though. He's aware how he is still very uncomfortable with his son's sexuality and no matter what happened, Sonny doesn't feel like betraying Will like that. Because, of course, he has never ceased loving him nor wanting to protect him. Maybe that's why he's getting even more angry.
He finds himself in front of the building door, trembling and unsure. He doesn't know what's going to happen, but he has to act. He goes to his place first. Every inch of the apartment is exploding with happy memories. Nothing has changed since he left. Will hasn't come back. Sonny half-runs outside and go knock at his neighbors'. The door opens and Mary's there. Her nose is red and she looks exhausted. They exchange a saddened look and hug, from sharing the same boat on the sea of despair. She lets him in. He doesn't feel like asking her straight away if she knows where Will is and rather says "I didn't see it coming, not ever. Is he gone?" "Yes. He'll stay with a friend of his. We moved in only two months ago... And it's not as if I could hope. He likes men. He should have been honest, though, not do it behind my back. He must have known who he was really attracted to, no?" Sonny sighs "It's complicated. Coming-out can be very hard. But I agree he should have broken up first. I know how it feels. It's horrible to realize that everything you believed in was an illusion."
Mary looks morose and Sonny leaves without answers. This time, he goes to his parents. He hasn't given any detail, just said there's a problem and he needs their presence. They don't look fooled but respect his need for discretion. He even manages to fall asleep.
At two in the morning, the phone rings. He shakes his arms around, disoriented and picks up instinctively. He can hear a whisper "Sonny, I'm so sorry..."
Sitting in bed, heart running a mile, Sonny listens to Will's voice and feels alive again. It's a distressing revelation, but it's the truth, Will is necessary to his inner cohesion. So instead of demanding explanations or apologies, he just asks "Are you all OK?" "No." There's a pause. Then Will adds "You must be so mad. I feel guilty as hell, I..." He can't go on and Sonny hears the repressed sobs. His heart is on the verge of explosion. "Will, we need to talk. You need to tell me what's going on. I'm paralyzed, please be honest with me!" Will sighs "I want to, it hurts too much and..." He's crying on the other side of the line. Sonny is miserable. "I'll tell you... later... Sonny, I..." The phone hanging tone is piercing his ears. Will has hung up. And things are worse. Sonny is only sure of one sure, now, Will still cares about him. Yet, he still doesn't know where they stand. Are they broken up? Is Will "with" Sebastian? Sonny knows now why he hates the guy so much. Not only has he stolen his love from him but the man actually waited to be sure before leaving the comfortable cocoon of his couple, even though he knew it was doomed. And the fact that Will was in a relationship didn't bother him in the least. To him, Sonny and Mary are not important. And he's gotten his claws in Will. He'll destroy him with his self-centeredness and Sonny is helpless.
