Five Years Earlier
Caroline sighed as she leveled the gun towards the target, and squeezed the trigger. She fired the weapon three times, and lowered it to reload.
"Someone ticked you off."
She forced a smile, and turned her head to find her fiancée leaning against the doorframe of the firing range. "What are you doing here, Lorenzo?" She asked, as he pushed away from the door, and approached her.
"Well, for starters, I want my greeting." He replied, lowly, smiling, as he leaned forward.
Caroline closed her eyes, and bit down the bile of disgust in her throat as his lips touched her cheek. She didn't know why she even bothered carrying on the charade of loving this man, when she didn't. She heard him sigh, and slowly her eyes opened.
"Caroline," He whispered, with a look of harshness crossing his face. "When is this going to stop?" He asked, watching her carefully.
Caroline searched his brown eyes, and shook her head. "I don't know." She whispered, turning to her weapon, and quickly reloading it and aiming it at the paper victim.
"It's been almost two years, and you still won't let me close." He stated, brushing his hand over her blonde hair.
Caroline stiffened, and closed her eyes. "I'm marrying you, Enzo." She whispered, squeezing the trigger.
He nodded, and glanced at the victim. "Yeah, but sometimes I think that you are only to stop the rumors going around the Marshals and Interpol." He stated, strongly.
Caroline lowered her weapon, and sighed. "What do you want me to say?" She asked, glaring at him. "That I can't marry you because I can't stand the thought of a man touching me." She demanded, catching the look of anger flashing in his eyes.
She watched as his demeanor changed as her words hit him. "Well, then, should I tell you that I never wanted to marry you either." He whispered, watching her eyes widen, but not from hurt, from shock. "I'll let you in on a secret, gorgeous." He began, leaning forward. "The only reason I started dating you, and gave you this long was for your father." He whispered, firmly.
Caroline's eyes widened, and she took a step back. "No," She whispered, as he sneered in satisfaction.
"Yes, Caroline," He whispered, touching her face, frowning when she flinched back. "Your father is a fine patron of mine." He added, his smile returning.
"It can't be." She whispered, shaking her head.
He slowly nodded his head, and smiled with more malice. "It can, and I'll let you in on a little secret." He whispered, leaning towards her ear. "He sends his love."
Caroline felt her stomach clench, and she felt a hint of bitterness rise from her stomach to her throat. This was impossible. Taking a step back, she raised the gun in her hand, and aimed it at him with a steady hand. "Get out of here, and if I ever see you or my father again, I will put a bullet in your head so fast that you won't have time to blink." She stated, strongly, but he could read the hesitation in her eyes.
"We'll see." He whispered, stepping back, and glanced at the paper victim. "You need more practice if you want to accomplish that." He replied, motioning to the paper victim, where only two holes were in the center, and the rest were scattered over the target.
Caroline smirked, and lowered the gun to his bulge. "I won't need to aim this close, Enzo." She stated, lifting her brow, causing him to swallow, and glare at her.
"I'll see you around, gorgeous." He stated, stepping back, and finally leaving her alone in the range.
Caroline lowered the gun, and felt her anger rise up in her soul. Lifting the gun in her hands, she fired at the target, and smiled when all the holes went in the center of the target. "More practice, my ass." She whispered, jerking her head at the door. "Did you get that?" She called out, as movement could be heard behind her.
"Loud and clear." Tyler called, stepping towards her. "But it's still not enough." He replied, approaching her, carefully.
Caroline nodded, and glared at the door once more. "It's enough for now." She stated, holstering her weapon, and glanced at Tyler, before moving towards the door. "Send me the copy." She added, before walking out the door.
Tyler sighed, and watched her leave. "Yes, ma'am." He whispered, shaking his head.
~X~
Caroline snapped out of the memory of that day, and sighed as she buttoned the last button of her blouse.
"You don't have to do this."
She closed her eyes, and bowed her head for a brief second before lifting her head, and turned to face him. She quickly gazed over his body, and felt her heart quicken in her chest at the thought of those powerful muscles concealed underneath the dark Henley and jeans he wore.
No matter what they had been through the past couple of weeks, she still loved him, and even though there was a wall between them, with each passing day, she felt it slowly coming down, and she knew it was only a matter of time when their relationship would be stronger than before.
"Yes, I do." She replied, grabbing her jacket, and slipped it on.
Klaus sighed, and slowly approached her. She was breathtaking with her gray business suit clinging to every curve of her perfect body, he remembered so well, and her blonde hair, casually pulled back into a ponytail, giving her a casual, yet dignified look. "Caroline," He began, but Caroline shook her head, and stopped his words.
"He won't try anything in a public place, Klaus." She replied, reaching for her weapon, sitting on the bed.
Klaus reached for it at the same time, and quickly grabbed it before she could. "I don't trust him, Caroline." He stated, catching her eyes.
She sighed, and dropped her hand to her side. "Neither do I." She returned, searching his eyes. "But I have no choice." She continued, turning from him. "If I don't meet with him, then he'll know something is going on, and I won't allow that." She finished, turning to find him, closing his eyes, a look of hatred and anguish on his face.
"I won't tell him anything about this family, Klaus." She whispered, getting him to open his eyes.
He swallowed, and searched her eyes. "I know." He whispered, in a strangled tone.
For a moment, time seemed to stop as they searched each other's eyes. Gravity seemed to take hold of their bodies as they began to move towards each other, unknowingly. Caroline swallowed the lump in her throat as she stared into the eyes of the man she loved more than life itself.
"You can't go." She whispered, finally, wanting it to be a question, but it sounded more like a statement.
Klaus lifted his right hand slowly, and placed it on her face. "I want to." He returned, searching her eyes.
She tugged her bottom lip in between her teeth, and closed her eyes. She wanted to tell him to hell with it, and drag him with her, to stand by her side, hold her hand, help her to stay strong, but no matter what she wanted, she had to keep him away from Enzo, at least for the moment. "So do I." She whispered, brokenly.
Klaus searched her face, and stroked her face with fingers that missed the feel of her skin under them. "Caroline," He whispered, softly, causing her to open her eyes, and lift them to his.
In her eyes, he saw the strength he remembered her having before everything had come into play, and he realized this was the Marshal side of her. She had turned off what she felt, and became the woman whose duty came first. He realized at that moment that today would determine if his plan would fail or succeed, but he had to trust Caroline.
He didn't know if he could, not completely, but seeing her the past couple of weeks after the ordeal with her father, he knew that she would chose the family over her job, if not then she would have turned him in weeks ago, but she hadn't.
"To hell with it." Caroline whispered, and reached up to grasp his face with her hands, and slammed her lips onto his. She needed this. She needed reassurance that he would be here, and he would support her if she needed him to.
Klaus stood frozen for only a split second before responding to her kiss with enthusiasm. All the pent up passion and love for the past few weeks came flooding into that one kiss in the middle of their bedroom.
Caroline tilted her head to the left, and opened her mouth, deepening the kiss, loving the feel of his scruff scratching her face lightly.
Klaus weaved his right hand into her hair, and his left landed on her hips, and pulled her to him, aligning their bodies, perfectly.
Slowly, they separated and opened their eyes in unison, both panting as the effects of the kiss raged through their bodies.
Caroline smiled at him, and stroked his face lightly before giving him a quick kiss, and walked out of the room, leaving him bewildered, and full of hope that it would work out.

The smell of alcohol filled the room at the bar, and made Caroline swallow the bile that threatened to erupt. She hated the smell, although she had learned to be tolerant, and even indulged in a drink every now and then, she hated the smell of a bar room.
She sighed as she made her way to the bar, and felt a hand touch her back with a familiar caress. She clamped her eyes shut for a moment before motioning to the bartender for a drink.
"I didn't think you would agree to meet me here in a place like this." Lorenzo replied, lifting his glass to his lips.
Caroline took the shot of whiskey from the bartender, and placed it to her lips. "I'm just full of surprises." She stated, swallowing a bit.
Enzo smirked, and placed his glass on the bar. "Walk with me." He replied, watching her down the rest of the whiskey.
"Whatever you have to say, can be said here, Lorenzo." She stated, motioning for another drink.
He chuckled and leaned forward to her ear. "Careful, gorgeous, or you'll be too drunk to listen to my proposal." He whispered, firmly.
Caroline rolled her eyes and downed the next drink. "I came here to give you an update on my work, and here it is." She stated, turning to face him, and he could see that she was a stronger woman than the one he remembered. "I have infiltrated the organization, and I'm getting close to finding out who the Hybrid is. The family is very protective, and close knit, and it has taken me six months to get this far, and despite the rush job my superiors are expecting by sending you here, it's not going to make the Hybrid stand up and say here I am." She stated, firmly, and harshly.
Enzo smirked at her bravado, and dipped his head. "Well, maybe, you are just not cut out for this kind of work, Caroline, or has your background, cost you the chance to find out?" He taunted, watching fire flash in her eyes. "I heard there is bad blood between the Mikaelson family and the Forbes. Now," He paused, picking up his glass, and fiddled with it between his fingers. "I wonder what would happen if they knew who you really were, perhaps then, the Hybrid would show his face." He added, peaking up at her from his dipped head.
Caroline glared at him, and leaned forward. "You're still working for him, aren't you?" She asked, and the expression on his face answered her question. "Well, then, let me make this perfectly clear, you tell them anything about me, and I'll make sure you won't be able to perform your manly duties for the rest of your life." She replied, sweetly. "Do I make myself clear?" She asked, searching his eyes, placing her hand on his crotch, and squeezed it hard, causing him to groan in pain.
He gritted his teeth, and grasped her hand with his, and noticed how she didn't flinch like she used to. "You've met someone, haven't you, Gorgeous?" He asked, searching her eyes. "I wonder who the lucky guy is, and if he knows the truth." He whispered, tauntingly.
Caroline smirked, and tilted her head. "That is none of your business, Enzo." She replied, removing her hand, and downed the next drink the bartender had placed in front of her. "The only concern of yours is leaving me alone, and not screwing up my assignment." She stated, standing up.
He shook his head, and grasped her hand with his. Before he could react, she whirled around, and kicked the stool out from underneath him, and pulled out the glock, which had been concealed behind her back. Sending a glance to the bartender, she aimed the gun at Enzo. "Touch me again, and you'll be praying for death." She stated, with a steady hand.
Enzo glared at her, but didn't say a word as he numbly nodded his head. She smiled, and lowered the gun as she stepped back, and headed out the bar, leaving a seething Enzo behind.
She made it to the car, waiting for her on the curb, and climbed in. She sighed, and leaned her head back against the leather headrest.
"Loved your performance." Katherine replied, from the driver's seat. "Although, I would have shot his little children off." She added, motioning to the gun.
Caroline chuckled, and shook her head. "No matter what I wished I could have done, Kat, he's still an Interpol agent." She replied, sighing.
Katherine nodded, and put the car in gear before driving away. "I remember once you told me that you had evidence that could ruin his career." She stated, firmly.
Caroline nodded, and sighed. "I do, but I can't use it, not yet, anyway." She answered, with a distant tone.
Katherine's brow furrowed, and she spared a glance at her friend. "Why not?"
"Because it's not enough." Caroline sighed.
"Does Klaus know?"
Caroline nodded. "I told him a few days ago." She answered, turning her head, and frowned. "Kat, do me a favor, and take the long way home." She replied, turning her head over her left shoulder.
Katherine glanced in the rear view mirror, and frowned. "Damn it." She whispered, taking her phone out, and handed it to Caroline. "Call him." She replied, as Caroline took the phone. "It's secure." She added, turning onto a crowded street.
Caroline nodded, and dialed the number, and held it up to her ear. "Hey, sweetheart," She replied, letting him know something was wrong.
"Caroline," Klaus replied on the other end.
She glanced in the mirror, and frowned. "Kat and I are going to be a little late for dinner." She replied, glancing at Katherine.
"Where?"
She smiled at the concern in his voice, and sighed. "Oh, down in the old French Quarter." She answered, shaking her head at Katherine, who rolled her eyes.
"He's listening."
She sighed, and looked closer at the image, and glanced over her shoulder to get a better view. "Not as far as I can tell. I'm being careful, sweetheart." She replied, smiling at Katherine's look of disgust.
"Fine, I'll meet you at the bar." He replied, firmly.
She smiled, and dipped her head. "I'm looking forward to it." She returned, glancing behind her at the car, still tailing them, before ending the call.
Katherine pulled over at the curb, and put the car in park before turning to Caroline, and lifted her finger. Taking out the small jamming signal from her pocket, she made a quick sweep, and sighed when no bugs were detected. "We're good to go." She replied, smiling.
Caroline sighed, and nodded. "Let's go have a drink."
Katherine smiled, and nodded. "That's the best offer you've had all day." She remarked, climbing out of the car, and joined Caroline on the sidewalk.
"He's listening." Caroline whispered, after she had snuck a peek behind them, and found Enzo in the car two cars behind them with a small radar dish, and earphones.
Katherine nodded, and threaded her arm through Caroline's arm. "He doesn't know me, so that's an advantage." She whispered, pausing at the distress look on Caroline's face.
"No, but my father does." She whispered, catching Katherine's face as her eyes closed in despair.
"Well, then, let's get this over with." Katherine stated, as they walked down the street. "How I wish to shoot your father at this moment." She muttered as they walked into the bar, where Caroline had met Klaus that first night.
"You and me both." Caroline signed, watching Katherine snicker at the phrase. She glanced behind them, and sighed as she caught sight of Enzo walking, inconspicuously down the street after them.
She motioned for Katherine to follow her, and they walked quickly through the bar, towards the back door. "Hurry," She frantically spoke, just as she saw Enzo enter the bar, looking everywhere for them.
They quickly opened the door, and both sighed as Klaus opened the back door of the car, and Caroline hopped in the back while Katherine hopped in the front seat with Stefan driving.
"Hurry," Caroline spat out, glancing at the door, and then at Klaus, who nodded in agreement, and Stefan hit the accelerator.
The car jolted as the gas ignited, and they sped out of the alley. Just as they cleared the alleyway, the back door opened, and Enzo frowned as he looked around, and cursed under his breath as he realized he had lost them.

Caroline leaned against Klaus, and sighed as his arm wrapped around her. "He's still working for my father." She whispered, shaking her head before laying it on Klaus' shoulder.
Klaus sighed, and closed his eyes. "Stefan, take us to site B, and let the family know." He replied, watching Stefan nod in understanding.
"Site B?" Caroline asked, lifting her head.
Klaus sighed, and nodded. "If ever there came a time when the family would no longer be considered safe, Elijah and I found a place where we could move for a short time, until the danger subsided." He answered, glancing at Caroline.
Caroline nodded, and smiled. "So that's where we're going." She replied, watching him nod. "And you trust me with its location?" She asked, watching him turn his head, and hold her eyes with his.
Without a word, Klaus leaned forward, and caressed her face with his right hand before placing his lips on her in a tender kiss. As he pulled back, he held her eyes once more before speaking the words. "Yes."

"Your daughter has gotten smarter in the past five years, Forbes." Enzo remarked over the phone, as he sat in his rental car.
"You have the address of where she's staying, Lorenzo, don't fail me this time." William bit out.
Enzo sighed, and ended the call. "Not much for chit chat, Forbes, well, you haven't changed." He muttered, throwing his phone on the passenger seat before cranking up the car, and turned on the GPS.
He would make it to the house before dark, and this time he wouldn't fail.

"Just take what you need, sweetie." Caroline remarked over the phone, glancing at Klaus. "I know, Joey, but we'll see you soon, now you listen to your Aunt Rebekah and Aunt Bonnie, and be careful." She added, smiling at his next words. "I love you too, sweetie." She whispered, as she ended the call.
"I know how you feel, love." Klaus whispered, as he stepped closer to her.
She smiled as she turned her head, and searched his face. "What's going to happen when this doesn't work?" She asked with her smile fading.
Klaus turned his head to look out of the window, and sighed. "It has to." He whispered, in a distant tone. "Or else, I move to plan C." He replied, glancing at her, before moving away from the window.
"And plan C is?" She asked, folding her arms over her chest, and watched him walk towards the small fireplace of the small cottage on the outskirts of New Orleans.
He sighed, and turned to look at her, and she read the expression on his face. Shaking her head, she walked up to him. "You are not seriously thinking, what I think you're thinking." She stated, shaking her head even more.
Klaus sighed, and clenched his jaw for a brief moment. "It's the only way to keep the family safe." He replied, searching her eyes.
She shook her head, disagreeing with him even more. "No, it's not, Klaus." She stated, fire coming out in her words. "I've known you for six months, going on seven, and I have never seen you give up on anything." She added, anger hitting every word.
Klaus took a step toward her, and lifted his left arm outward, his body leaning slightly. "Caroline, I haven't given up because I always had something to fight for, and…"
"No!" Caroline shouted, halting his next words. "You still have something to fight for. You have your brothers, your sister, Bonnie, and Joey, and…" She paused, tears filling her eyes. "And me." She added, in a low tone, but he heard her anyway.
Klaus tilted his head to the side, and took a step towards her. "Do I have you?" he whispered, holding her eyes in an electric moment.
Caroline swallowed, and felt the tears leak down her cheeks, before she nodded. "Always." She whispered, forgoing her pride and the walls she had built up between them or they had built up.
At that moment, time stood still once again between them. Nothing mattered to them except the words she had just said, and holding her eyes, Klaus knew it was true.
He had her, and at that moment, he didn't want to let her go. He couldn't. "Always?" He asked, just to be sure he was reading her eyes and emotions correctly.
Caroline smiled, and reached up with her right hand to touch his scruffy face, while her left hand dropped to her side. "Always." She whispered, nodding, her eyes lowering to his lips before lifting to his eyes.
In a swift moment, he had her in his arms, and his lips had claimed hers, and nothing else mattered except that moment, when Caroline threw everything to the wind, and chose her heart over her job, and she knew as she held onto him, that it was a decision she would never regret.
Please be kind!
I should remind you all that Klaus and Caroline still have a little way to go, but they have taken a step to a stronger relationship than before. I hope you approve.
Coming Soon: Klaus has a proposal to make of Caroline; Joey has his first Christmas with his new parents; Enzo comes close to finding the family; Caroline has a huge decision to make, but it's a decision that's already made in her mind.
Only eight chapters to go! (I say that because I already have the next present chapter written! :) )
Until Next Time...
