Chapter 58 - Birthday's and Disappearances

Vaas could tell that there was something wrong with Rosa. The whole night just felt off.

Rosa was being distant, sitting on the couch by herself, not touching any alcohol or drugs as well as not speaking to anyone. Vaas had been at the bar by himself, just having a few beers but he knew that something was up.

Raul and Jane were sat together; Jane was on his lap and the pair were laughing and joking. Envy overcame Vaas' body; he was jealous that he and Rosa weren't like that for the party.

The rest of the pirates were having a good time like they always did but it was just Rosa that wasn't in the party mood. Shadow Man was no where to be seen; he was probably off on his own. The music felt louder and the atmosphere more intense, like everything was distorted.

Vaas flung down his beer and got to his feet, stomping over to Rosa. Without a word, he grabbed her hand and yanked her from the couch, out of the compound and onto the beach.

"What the hell, Vaas?" Rosa asked, annoyed at his behaviour.

"What's up with you? You've been fucking sat by yourself all night, not doing anything. Care to tell me what the fuck is going on?" Vaas snapped, which took Rosa by surprise.

She didn't think that he would notice that she was distant, she thought that he would be too into the party; that was naivety on her part. She didn't know whether to be worried or to be happy that he noticed.

"Nothing's going on, okay? Geez, can you just drop it?" Rosa replied, her voice cracking a little.
Vaas was taken from his annoyed state as he moved closer to Rosa, now concerned. He took one of her hands and tried to look her in the eye.

"Princesa, what's wrong? I know you, you're never like this. Please, tell me and then I can help. You're killing me, hermana, I don't like to see you like this."
Rosa sighed and looked at Vaas, into his deep green orbs. A small tear ran down her face and Vaas wiped it away with the pad of his thumb.

"I'm late." Rosa stated.
Vaas squinted at her, trying to grasp what she had just said.
"What?" he whispered, his voice only just audible over the music.
"I haven't done the test yet but I'm late. Shit, Vaas, shit."

Rosa dropped his hand and turned away from him, resting her hands against her forehead.
"You mean ... you might be pregnant?" Vaas reiterated, his eyes wide.
He rushed around so he could see Rosa and he pulled her hands from her face.

"Why are you scared? Isn't this a good thing?" Vaas asked.
Rosa shrugged.
"Vaas, I don't know. After last time ... I just don't think now is the ideal time. I know we're not the most cautious with birth control."
"You can speak to Doctor Earnhardt about that stuff - he'll get you what you need. It's dumb of both of us to think that something like this couldn't happen."

Rosa sighed.
"It's not just that, Vaas. I don't want to lose it again. I'll die if I do."
Vaas kissed Rosa's hand and tipped her chin up.

"Is that what the Doc wanted to speak to you about?" Vaas asked.
Rosa nodded.
"I've took one of his urine test things. I haven't done it yet." Rosa replied.
She sat down on the sands, looking up at the stars.

"Vaas, can we raise a baby on these islands?"
Vaas sat down next to her, taking her hand in his.

"Of course we can. You arrived when you were a baby and look at you now. Beautiful and brave and badass. I grew up here too. We don't need to talk about what happened with that but things are different now. We'd be raising this baby and we'd do it right." Vaas replied.
Rosa turned to face him, the moonlight shining down on them.

"Let's go and do the test now. You know my motto, no time like the present. Then we'll know. And whatever happens, you know that I love you, yes?"
"Yes. I love you too." Rosa replied, getting to her feet.

The pair walked back to the compound, their fingers loosely entwined. Moving through the crowd, they arrived at the warehouse, below the huge rose.

"I still smile whenever I see that." Rosa said and Vaas smirked.
"Me too. I know that I don't have to wait for you anymore, because you're here." Vaas replied, earning him a kiss from Rosa.

"How long have I been here?" Rosa asked, pulling away from Vaas.
His hands rested on her waist and she had to look up at him.
"Well, your birthday is nearly coming up and that'll be a year. Holy shit, a year." Vaas replied.

Rosa chuckled.
"Shit, it feels so much longer."
"That's because so much has happened." Vaas replied, "Hopefully, we can just relax now and have a fucking epic life."
"I like the sound of that ... Hey, what are you getting me for my birthday?" Rosa asked, winking at Vaas.
"I haven't planned that far ahead, princesa, give me some time to think." Vaas replied, laughing.
"Okay, okay. I'll get back to you on that one. Let me go in and get the stuff together, okay. Gimme a few minutes."

Rosa then pecked Vaas on the cheek and went into the warehouse. Vaas wandered over to the hostage area, finding that many of them had managed to fall asleep, despite the loud music. A few were mumbling and twitching and all of them were bloodied and battered.

Vaas never really felt any remorse for any of them; they were just essential to his livelihood as he needed them to make money. He only felt slightly guilty when Rosa had killed the woman who told him to ask Rosa to marry him; it was a new emotion for him. He didn't know why but he felt like he had connected with her in a weird way, in strange circumstances. She spoke sense, even if it was only for her benefit.

Vaas thanked her in a way, for making him realise that he and Rosa were meant to be together forever.

Walking back to the warehouse, Vaas opened the door, it squeaking upon him doing so.

"Rosa? Princesa, where are you?" he called playfully.
No reply came.

"Rosa? Hermana, don't fuck around." he said, his voice more worried.

He ran into the their room, Rosa no where in sight. The urine test was dropped on the floor and a note lay on the bed. The secret door was wide open; Vaas felt his heart leap into his mouth. He rushed over to the note and picked it up, his hands shaking. He scanned his eyes over it and then scrunched it up, murder and panic taking over his body.

He ran out of the warehouse, shouting and screaming for the pirates, for Raul, leaving the note behind.

"You should have never have let your guard down."
