Chapter 13
Tala was looking around, occasionally glancing Kai. Who just stood next to him, leaning to a wall with the red eyes closed. He hoped Rei would come quickly, it was cold and windy day. He looked at Kai when he heard the guy sift.
"What now?" he asked. Was Kai bored or busy and would leave him. He wouldn't want that. He wanted to talk more to Kai, know more about him now that the first secret between them had been shared. Kai quirked a fine eyebrow and the red orbs turned to me. Pointedly he put his hand into his leather jacket's pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. Still looking Tala in the eyes Kai put one between his lips. His other hand came out of the other pocket with a lighter. Now it was his turn to lift an eyebrow. "I can't believe you actually have one with you"
Kai just snorted and looked at the lighter, bringing it to his lips and cupping it with his hands. There was a few snaps. Then Kai cursed.
"It's fucking empty" the red eyed guy growled. He laughed
"You are so addicted to nicotine." the red eyes shot him a glare but he just grinned it off. With a frustrated sigh Kai tossed the lighter away. "Don't trash my college" he reproached Kai. This time the glare he got made him fell silent.
There was a silence. Kai put the pack away, but left the one between his lips.
"You know it's not lit?" he finally had to ask. There had been a frown the whole time and the red eyes had looked somewhere far off. But now the eyes closed and Kai sighed.
"I'm not as stupid as you look" was his quiet respond
"Hey, no need to go into personal stuff!"
Kai gave a deep dark chuckle, then the red eyes turned back to his eyes.
"Since you don't have the politeness to check without being asked, would you happen to have a lighter with you?"
I scratched my head.
"I'm pretty sure I gave the last one I had to you"
Kai sighed and leaned his head to the wall. He rummaged his pockets and smiled triumphantly when his fingers closed around a box
"But I do have matches!" he said victoriously. Kai's attention snapped immediately to him. He reached out the box and Kai grabbed it. With some difficulties Kai managed to light his smoke and took a deep breath. After he had let it out, a satisfied smirk spread to his face
"I haven't have one since yesterday. And it really makes my head ache" Kai said and rubbed his temple. He rolled his eyes
"addict"
the red eyes looked amused but didn't comment. Apparently Kai was completely fine with ruining his lungs at such a young age.
The waited in silence again, Kai slowly finishing his smoke.
And finally he heard a voice call
"Tala!" he looked around and saw a distant figure jogging towards them. He waved a hand high above his head, and the figure waved back. He glanced Kai.
"That's Rei" he explained. Kai snorted
"Really? I thought he was mister president"
he huffed back
"I wouldn't wave to the president." he grinned at Kai. "I would salute"
"For the sake of the soldiers he has shipped away to fight wars that has nothing to do with us?" Kai said questioningly. He nodded. Then Rei was close enough that they could see him. He draw in sharp breath. There was a fresh bruise forming on Rei's temple, making the amber eye stand out unnaturally.
He took a step forward
"Rei, what has happened to you?!"
Rei gave a small smile
"Hi. Sorry to bother you" Rei said awkwardly and looked down. "and I'm sorry for everything else... I just..." the amber eyes looked up and met his gaze. "I had loved him before you too started going out. And when he.." the amber pools filled with water "I couldn't say no. I'm sorry" Rei broke out in tears. He felt a lump in his own throat. He had had no idea how Rei had felt towards Brian. And now he didn't even care that much about it. He was better of without Brian. So the final icy wall broke in his heart and he truly let past be past. He stepped to Rei and wrapped arms around the Chinese guy. At first Rei stiffened, like expecting pain, but then the body relaxed in his arms, Rei hugged him back and sobbed against his shoulder.
It took a while before Rei pulled away and wiped his face to his sleeves. His own eyes were a bit moist too, but he just smiled
"feeling better?" he asked. Rei nodded.
"Yeah. Thanks" there was one of Rei's bright smiles. He hadn't realized he had missed it. "And I'm still sorry"
he shook his head
"Rei, it's okay. I forgive you. I have something better now" he said, smiling wider and pointing to Kai. "This is Kai. I met him at random" Rei looked past him, and then the amber eyes widened and Rei's jaw dropped
"Kai?!" Rei stuttered out, surprised. He was confused and turned to look Kai to figure out what was going on. There was similar surprised look on Kai's face. It made the guy look rather adorable.
"Drigger?" Kai asked. Then a grin broke out on Kai's face "Good to see that you are doing better"
Rei gave a airy short laugh.
"I can't believe it's you. I thought I would never see you again"
he watched how Kai nodded
"Me neither. It never occurred to me I could seek you out" Kai stared Rei intently, and with some sort of softness in his features. He felt a grip in his heart. Was Rei stealing another boyfriend from him. He stepped between the two of them, glancing between them.
"You know each others?" Kai eyes focused on him, silent, and when he looked at Rei, the Chinese guy nodded.
"Yes. We met years ago" Rei's eyes left his and looked Kai past him. "We were just kids back then. If not for his eyes, I wouldn't have recognized him" Rei explained to him. Not that it cleared things much.
"Met?" he asked. He felt defeated. He had just moments earlier learned something of Kai, and now it turns out everyone knows Kai better than he does. It just didn't seem fair. Rei nodded and looked at him again.
"You recall when we were eight and I went on a trip with my parents?"
he wrecked his brains and blurry recalled a summer when he couldn't play with Rei, since he was away visiting relatives. He nodded hesitantly
"Kinda. What about it?"
Rei thought a moment, absently putting his hair back in order.
"I got lost in an airport. Then a police"
"Milise" Kai interrupted. Both of them looked at the red eyed guy. Kai met his stare calmly "In Russian they are called milise."
he looked at Rei
"Why were you in Russian? I thought your relatives were Chinese?"
Rei gave him a pointed look
"That's a bit racist"
he smiled sheepishly
"Sorry"
Rei shook his head
"Never mind. In fact, I have relatives living in both. But anyway, I got lost in the airport, and then the milise" Rei smirked at Kai, who rolled his eyes "came to take me with them. We waited for my parents to try to find me, but they had some troubles so they didn't manage to do it. So then I was taken to an orphanage for the night, because they didn't think it was good idea to make me stay with smugglers and stuff."
he looked at Kai, wide eyed. Kai had lit another smoke, nonchalant. Noticing his stare Kai blew smoke at his face.
"You said you grew up in orphanage?" he said, hoping he recalled right. And that Kai had told the truth back then. Kai shrugged and nodded
"Yeah. But my grandpa owned the place" Kai's voice was indifferent. He frowned.
"if you had grandpa, why did you live in orphanage?"
Kai looked away, taking a deep breath
"That's a filthy habit" Rei commented. He chuckled and Kai growled in annoyance
"mind your own business"
Rei laughed and he smiled. He was so curious and eager to hear more about Kai's past but it was good to see Kai acting like normal person. Not smug secretive person.
"But why?" he propped, he wanted to hear more.
"Nosy" Kai muttered and looked at him, with a smirk playing in the corner of the lips. "Fine. I lived there, because my grandpa didn't care for kids. And my parents were dead."
he stared Kai, hardly believing his ears
"That makes no sense"
Kai shrugged, the smirk blossoming
"Actually, it does. Kids who loose their parents tend to go live in orphanage if they have no other place to go"
he turned to look Rei, because it was easier to make Rei talk, and he didn't play smart ass all the time
"That's where you met?"
Rei nodded.
"Yes. I was scared when I got there, but when I saw a bunch of guys bullying a younger kid, I couldn't just stand by. So I went there do defend the kid."
there was an annoyed grunt from Kai
"Reminiscing the past is all nice and good, but you mind if we move somewhere else?"
he glanced around. Maybe in the middle of college wasn't the best place to talk about personal matters. They still had to dig out what had happened to Rei.
"In a minute" he said and waved a hand to Kai. It could wait a moment, this was too good. Kai let out an irritated half grunt half sigh. It made bells ring in his head. "Was that kid...?" he asked, stealing a peek at Kai who was pointedly looking away. Rei nodded
"Indeed. It was Kai."
"But he was the son of the owner, why would they do that?"
Rei glanced at Kai, a bit sad
"Because of it. Not like grandpa cared about Kai. but they thought Kai was getting all kind of luxury treatment from him, and were jealous of it. And picked him relentlessly."
Kai sounded very displeased and bitter when he interrupted
"S you came like s knight in shining armor and chased the evil culprits away."
he was surprised by the tone but Rei just sighed and shook his head.
"I know it's a bit touchy subject. To put it short, I helped him out, and then I was bullied for being a Chinese and then Kai stood up to me. And frankly, he was better at fighting than me"
Kai seemed to relax when the digging up the past was cut short.
"More experience" Kai just stated, looking at them again with little sparkles in the red eyes. "But you weren't too bad yourself"
Rei bowed his head a bit
"That's an honor coming from you"
Kai chuckled.
"Why did you call him Drigger?" he asked Kai. The red orbs focused solely to him
"That's how he introduced himself to me. That's why I didn't even guess this would be him."
"This?" Rei piped in, frowning
"sush kitten" he said. It had been his nickname to Rei when they used to be friends. It was just because Rei's eyes were like cats. And because he had been a cute kid. Kai smirked hearing that.
"That's a good one"
he nodded.
"You are welcome to use it too" he said generously. He looked at Rei again, who seemed happy enough to burst
"Friends again?" the kitten whispered. He nodded with a smile, but said stern
"Of course. But you better keep your hands away from Kai" he more sensed than saw the look Kai send him. A mixture of amusement, calculation and a bit of annoyance. Maybe he was stepping his boundaries by trying to tell what Kai could do. But he just wanted Rei to keep some distance. Rei seemed to understand because the raven haired guy nodded , serious
"of course. He is more like a brother to me. Even though we were together for just few weeks"
"Weeks? How come it took so long for your parents to get you back?""Because there is a hell lot of paperwork to fill in Russian." Kai intertwined. "Shall we go now?"
he wondered why Kai was in so much of a hurry to leave, but he figured Kai just wasn't a fan of public appearance.
"Where to?" he asked. They all looked to each others. Rei shrugged
"Where ever is fine"
"Your place?" Kai suggested and looked at him. He nodded
"Good enough. Let's just buy something to eat from a shop on the way."
they all agreed to it and started heading back, he leading the way because Rei hadn't been to his current place before. He was burning with curiosity to hear what was wrong with Rei. Now when he was looking at the bruise, he didn't like the look of it. A fear nested in his chest. What was wrong with the kind and sweet little kitten? If not counting in Rei's betrayal, he was one of the best person he knew. Always ready to help and not one to push his issues on the shoulders of others.
Simply put, he was worried.
ooh, such an exciting end. or not. don't get your hopes up, it won't be anything fancy. just a way to introduce Kai a bit more. and with that, we are very close to finishing this up.
please stick around for it, and please leave a review. it helps my computer too to work better ;) good rest of the week to everyone reading!
