"How could you?!"
Mako's voice broke. Minako felt her heart go with it but held their gaze. Mako deserved that much.
"We would never turn against each other! Against HER!"
The hurled notebook came close enough that its flapping pages stung Minako's face. She didn't flinch.
Tears spilled down Mako's cheeks. Minako's remained dry. There'd be time later.
"Could you really do it?" She was whispering now, her hope naked and raw.
One no would fix all this. One denial and they could forget everything.
"Yes," Minako said.
She'd planned for everything, except how to live when Mako turned away.
