Chapter 73 - The Final Fight

Two weeks.

It was two weeks to the day and everyone was tentatively waiting. All the men were prepared, ammo full, trained to peak condition. This was to be the last fight against Rook Islands if Rosa was to have anything to do with it.

She walked out of the warehouse and over to Vaas, Raul and Jane. She took a moment to take in her surroundings as if it was to be her last time. Shaking her head as if to rid those kind of thoughts from her head, she jogged over to her favourite people.

Rosa had felt different since the day that Erskine had radioed, like something had changed but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Sliding her hands around Vaas, she smiled, trying to relax.

"Boo." she mumbled, kissing his toned arm.

Vaas moved so he pulled her properly into his body; a perfect fit. They had spent the previous night wrapped up in each other for hours, not moving from the bed and Vaas had loved every second as had she. Rosa could tell what he was thinking by his body language and smacked him lightly on the chest, chuckling.

Although they did not say it, they both knew that they could die fighting but they couldn't afford to think like that; they had been there too many times before and it had to end.

She squinted in the sun so she could look at her pirate lord. He had cleaned up for the fight and had let her shave his hair and beard, much to his dislike. Rose could feel his guns and knives digging into her side but saved her rude jokes to herself.

"My belle princesa." Vaas grinned before kissing her on the lips.
Raul and Jane made kissy sounds, sniggering, trying to lighten the heavy atmosphere that nobody addressed. Rosa pulled away, sticking her tongue out at her friends.

"Now we wait." she said, sighing.
"And now we wait." Raul replied, sharpening his lucky knife on a stone.
It glinted in the sunlight, its menacing tip looking ready to kill.

"When was the last time we heard from Erskine?" Jane asked, "I can't remember."
"He radioed this morning saying that the locals were getting ready. We've had men lining the area with mines and C4 since dawn." Vaas said, stroking his wife's arm.
"Fuckers won't know what's coming to them. When I'm through with them, they won't have a fucking leg to stand on." Raul said, running his knife along the stone with each venomous word.

"Patience, my dear Raul, haven't you learnt anything? It's all about the suspense when it's comes to fights like these." Rosa said, smirking.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say."
Raul slide his knife into his belt and got to his feet with Jane.

"Have you called Hoyt?" Jane asked, holding hands loosely with Raul.
Everyone could sense something in the air, the possibility of death looming over them all.
"I rang him late last night. He wishes us all luck; like we'll fucking need it." Rosa said, making them all chuckle.
"You got that right hermana." Vaas replied, "Anyways, here are your supplies."

Vaas handed Rosa a LMG, an AK47, a pistol and a handful of grenades, clipping them onto her holster around her waist.
"Don't forget this!" Raul chipped in.
He passed Rosa a sharpened knife, smiling.

"Vaas asked me to make yours as pointy as your heels. It's insane that you're fighting in them.
"It's prac -" Rosa started before she heard Vaas speaking at the same time.
"It's practise, hombre." Vaas said, "Haven't you learnt by now?"
"I've trained you well, Vaasy bear." Rosa beamed, kissing him on the cheek.
"You wish." he winked mischievously.

Waaaaaaoooooooooo.

"Shit." Rosa whispered, her heart stopping.
The siren rang all over their small island, a signal that the locals had been seen and were coming. Everyone's stomach seemed to simultaneously drop as the dreadful sound rang out for a second time.

Waaaaaooooooooo.

They all had come to fight and to defend their island for the last time.

WAAAAAOOOOOO.

The locals were coming.

"EVERYONE GET INTO FUCKING POSTIONS. THERE WILL BE BLOOD TONIGHT!" Vaas roared, beating his chest with his fists.

The pirates lined the perimeter of the inside and outside of the compound as well as on the outskirts of the beach. Traps had been carefully planned by Vaas as Erskine had informed them that the number of locals ready to pounce was huge.

"Good luck, amigos. I'll see you when this is all over." Raul said, nodding at the pair.
"Good luck, Raul." Rosa said, hugging him hurriedly.
Vaas nodded at him, a signal between the men.

"Let's get these fuckers, baby." Raul said, taking Jane by the hand.
"Don't let me down Jane. Be the badass female." the blonde pirate stated with a wicked grin.
"Thanks, Rosa. Good luck."

As the pair ran off together, Rosa prayed she would see them again.
Alive.

WAAAAAAOOOOOOO.

The roar of the locals boats was getting louder as the time was fast approaching.

"SLAUGHTER THEM ALL, BOYS! YOUR LIVES DEPEND ON IT. MAKE THEM PAY!" Vaas screamed, gathering up some quick heal medicine prepared by Doctor Earnhardt, who was hiding in the safe house shack of the compound.

"Vaas." Rosa called, grabbing his arm.
He saw the look on his wife's face and scooped her up in his arms and off her feet, hugging her tightly before kissing her, long and hard.

"Te amo, mi amor." he breathed, resting his forehead against hers.
"Te amo, Vaas Montenegro. Don't die on me."
"Never, princesa, I promise."
"Good luck, my pirate king. Now lets go and murder these fuckers."

The shouts and roars of the men was loud enough for everyone to hear.

Rosa ran out into the thick of the fight, Vaas already having gone out there. She looked around to see many men in hand to hand combat with the locals, blood being splattered and bullets being sprayed. The ground had begun to turn red and the fighting hadn't even properly started. Vaas had presumably charged off, his gun in the air, primed and ready to kill.

Rosa looked around before deciding on her target. The locals looked like they could all be related, their tanned skin and hair practically identical. But they looked like killers. Rosa had to watch her back as she stopped and spotted Erskine, jumping off a boat. Rosa held her breath as he ran with the locals before turning on his heel and bounding at them with his knife. He sliced open two of their throats, smiling.

"TRAITOR!" Rosa heard a local scream.

Erskine just laughed a deep laugh before grabbing the skinny local by the shoulders and breaking his neck in his hands; it took Rosa's breath away at his strength. He grunted in satisfaction at the kill. Rosa caught his eye and he nodded at her with a slight smile; his work had been fulfilled.

Explosions of mines boomed around the compound, bodies flying in the air.

There were so many of them.

Rosa saw her opening and bounded towards a local, her knife poised and ready to kill. She jumped on the unsuspecting victim before sliding the knife quickly around his throat, his sticky blood pouring over her fingers. She growled before pushing the body aside, moving onto the next one. It wasn't long before she was blindly murdering every local in her sight, man or woman, the primal instinct encompassing her body.

It seemed like the number of locals would not decrease yet the number of pirates was. Vaas' men were running out and some even started retreating back to the compound, their wounds too much.

Rosa ran into Jane, who was dripping with blood. It was hard to hear what she was saying over all the noises.
"THERE'S TOO MANY OF THEM!" WE CAN'T HOLD THEM OFF!"
Rosa touched the girls arm, nodding.

She had to find Vaas; they needed to regroup. Jane ran back off into the fight, down near the loading docks.

"VAAS!" Rosa screeched, "VAAS!"

She ran off blindly, pushing through some pirates.

"He can't be dead, he can't be dead, he can't be dead." she repeated this over and over in her head like a mantra.

The blood on her body was sticking and was mingling with sweat. The heat of the island was growing unbearable, the constant noise deafening her ear drums. Rosa ran into a dark figure, the wind being knocked out of her.

"Vaas?"
"Hey, hey! It's me, Rosa. Erskine."
She looked up to see him caked in red. Disappointment overwhelmed her as it wasn't her husband. She was becoming more urgent.

"WHERE'S VAAS? I NEED TO FIND VAAS." she cried, on the edge of angry tears.
"I saw him go into the compound and ... Rosa, look out!."

Without another second to breathe, Rosa turned around and plunged her knife into the charging local, her knife protruding from his neck. It made him gargle up blood before he collapsed to the floor. When she turned back, Erskine was gone, presumably back to fight again.

"Vaas!" she screamed but no answer came.
She prayed he was in the compound like Erskine had said; he had to be. Rosa ran off again aimlessly, trying to not trip over bodies of pirates and locals.
"WE CAN'T HOLD THEM BACK!" she heard a man shout, "THERE'S MORE COMING!"
"I will not die here today." she growled, wiping the blood on her dirty skirt.

"Rosa Volker, your time is up." a random voice grumbled.

She turned around only to find a fist to connect with her face. She recoiled in pain, her blood dripping onto some strange plants below her. She shook her head to regain balance before looking up at her attacker. It was a simple local, an easy target.

"It's Montenegro, actually." she snarled, wiping the blood from her lip with a quick swipe of the back of her hand.
Rosa jumped on the man, swinging her leg under his so he collapsed onto the ground. It was an easy manoeuvre for her so she could grab her pistol.
"I'm always a Volker at heart though." she smirked. With one shot, the man was dead.

"VAAS, PLEASE. PLEASE BE ALIVE!" she screeched, "THIS IS NOT GOODBYE, YOU FUCKER!"
"YOU'VE ALL COME TO FUCK WITH ME? IN MY OWN HOUSE?!" his voice screamed.

Rosa looked around her but she could not see him. More locals were descending behind her from the loading bay, an endless stream, the alarm was still sounding. Molotov's were being thrown, a fire starting to spread through the dry grass. She looked up again frantically to finally spot Vaas on the roof of a shack, a rocket launcher in hand.

"VAAS, NO!" Rosa screamed but it was too late.

The next thing she saw was the rocket being fired and aiming for the locals, Vaas falling and then ...

Darkness.
