This is just a short and cute one-shot; the idea sprung out of nowhere.
"Do you remember the first time we met?" Marlene asked one night. Night being 2AM, therefore she had to shake Uriah awake before asking him the question.
"Marley," Uriah said, using a childhood nickname for Marlene, whilst he glanced over at the clock. "It's 2AM. Go back to sleep and ask me again tomorrow."
Marlene frowned; she wanted an answer now. "I'll forget," she insisted, prodding him with a pointy nail. "Uri, come on. Do you remember the first time we met?"
Uriah rolled his eyes and sat up, looking at her. She'd already turned the lamp on. "Of course I do. I'm not going to forget the day I fell in love with you."
"We were six, I don't think you fell—"
"Okay, so I didn't realise it then," Uriah admitted. "But I knew you were special. Can I go back to sleep now?"
"No!" Marlene pratically squealed, "You could be lying. Tell me how we met."
Uriah was about to object before realising that Marlene would keep going on about it until he told her. "Fine," he mumbled, "It was coming up to December and Zeke made me go ice-skating so he could impress a girl in his class..."
FLASHBACK
It was a cold, winter day in Chicago – a thin sheet of frost and ice had covered the ground. The factionless were covered in whatever piece of clothing or rag they could find, seeking shelter wherever they could. Abnegation were helping the factionless. The Erudite's were wearing lap coats, taking samples of frost an ice – the word on the street was they were studying the weather to see when it could snow. Candor were doing what they did best and be honest about the Christmas decorations that were being brought over to the different factions – that honesty involved the usage of the words 'tacky' and 'the Dauntless Christmas tree is black like their hearts.' Amity were, as usual, making the best out of this and putting a positive spin on everything, even when someoone slipped over.
The Daunltess?
Most of them were running down to the ice-skating rink. This is where Zeke was dragging his younger brother Uriah. Zeke was only eight at the time, whereas his younger brother was six, but he was already trying to impress a girl.
"But, Zeke, I don't wanna'," Uriah said in a whiny voice, being dragged along by his older brother.
"It's only to impress Shauna, Uriah!" Zeke insisted, gripping onto his arm tighter so he couldn't escape.
"But," Uriah drawled out, emphasising the 'but'. "I can't ice-skate!"
"It's easy," Zeke insisted as they approached the ice-skating rink. "It's like walking... Except it's on ice and a lot more slippy..."
Before Uriah could protest anymore, Zeke forced him into ice-skates (and he literally had to use force, since Uriah kept trying to wriggle away) and pushed him onto the ice.
"There's Shauna. Sorry, bro, gotta— HEY, SHAUNA! YEAH, I'LL BE OVER IN A MINUTE—so anyway, as I was saying—I SAID I WILL BE OVER IN A MINUTE! GOSH! I AM TRYING TO TALK TO MY KID BROTHER! Anyway, bro, as I was saying, I've gotta go and impress Shauna. Just skate around for a while. Good day."
"But, I can't—"
"I said good day!" Zeke yelled dramatically, skating off. He crashed into a couple of people as he did so, very nearly knocking over a small girl with a black fluffy coat. She looked about Uriah's age.
Uriah thought about what his brother said and how he described ice-skating. "How hard can it be?" Uriah thought to himself; he grinned and moved his right foot, preparing to skate... Before landing on his ass. "I probably used the wrong foot," he thought as he scrambled up off the ice. He cautiously moved his left foot, then his right, then his left... Before landing on his ass again.
After many failed attempts, Uriah got into a strop and sat in the corner of the ice-rink, watching everyone else. By this point, it wasn't very busy. There were a couple of Dauntless there, but most of them had gone to see the firework display. Uriah had wanted to go there but oh no, Zeke just had to take him ice-skating instead. He would have preferred to see things exploding as a opposed to sitting on wet and cold ice.
There was one perk of it though; in Uriah's eyes it was a perk, anyway. The girl that Zeke almost knocked over was still there. She gracefully moved around the ice, like it was the easiest thing in the world. Every now and then she would do poses or spins or even jumps. Uriah was fixated on her; how had he never seen her before? She was clearly Dauntless and, to him, the most beautiful girl in the world. How had he not noticed her before?
"CRAP!" Uriah thought to himself as he was pulled out of his trance; the girl had caught him staring and she was now coming over. Before Uriah could jump to his defence as to why he was staring, the girl sat down on the ice beside him.
"Hi," She said cheerfully with a huge grin.
"Hi..."
"I'm Marlene."
"Hi, Marley. I'm Uriah."
"I said that my name is Marlene."
"I know! I just thought it would be a cool nickname..."
"Oh, right. Then I guess it is."
There was a moment of silence before Uriah spoke up. "Why did you come over?"
"Well, you've been sat on the freezing cold ice all afternoon, and I didn't think it was fair that you were the only one getting a wet butt."
And with that, a friendship blossomed.
END OF FLASHBACK
"It was Zeke that almost knocked me over!?"
"Yeah..."
"You were staring at me all afternoon!?"
"Yeah- Wait, no. I mean... Not in a freaky way. I just... Admired."
"There was a firework display that night!?"
"Marlene, can we just go to sleep now?"
Marlene frowned slightly but went silent.
Uriah grinned at her, "Good night, Marley. I love you."
"I love you too, Uri." Marlene replied with a smile as she kissed him.
