Jon I
They looked at him with hatred and distrust, only a few, like Sam, Pyp, Green and Ed still treated him like brothers. Maester Ameon was technically the senior brother but Castellan duty fell to the infirm Ser Wynton Stout but with Donal Noye as the De facto leader, as Bowen Marsh had moved west with many of their forces to fight what he thought was the main wilding army leaving castle black with just Green boys, and old men plus a new recruits luckily Lannister forces sent to the walls had not been sword brothers when the forces left so they were still at Castle Black which gave them experience that they desperately needed. As a wilding attack was coming closer, people had already fled from Moles towns and the other villages in the gift and were being sheltered here at the castle.
Maester Aemon had asked him to work alongside the de facto leader Blacksmith Donal Noye in preparation of defences much to the annoyance of the Lannister men who thought Ser Kevan Lannister should have been put in charge with all his experience but since Jon had been a brother for longer and knew of the threat he had been chosen.
So much news had been thrust upon since his return to the wall, his father's death, his brother Bran missing, Catelyn Stark dead and so much more. It had nearly broke him, to think that he hadn't be there for his brother in his time of need now his brother was heading North to help him in his time of need.
Their latest riders had arrived back informing them that the wilding force in the south was about a day's march from Castle Black. Mole's Town had been sacked soon it would be them.
The problem was defending the Castle form the South was never meant to be easy. Castle Black wasn't a true castle, the only wall it had was the wall, because that was all that was needed. Hey had no curtain walls or other defensive fortifications, it was merely a series of buildings and towers linked together by tunnels underground necessary for travel between during the harsh winters. They had fortified as best they could, Donal Noye would protect he gate from being captured while he commanded the archers and men on towers and buildings, defending it to the last man.
It seemed hopeless ,over half of their forces left at Castle Black were green, sick or old, where the wilding force were battle hardened and experienced killers. They had at least double their number and would stop at nothing to open the gate for the main wilding host that was sure not to be too far away now.
Their only hope was for reinforcements to arrive, Maester Aemon had already sent out ravens, and 4 had returned already: Winterfel, Last hearth, Deepwood Motte, and Karhold
All were sending reinforcements but all but the Last hearth would take a week or more to get here. The last Hearth was the only one that could have men arrive before the southern attack and only if they had sent the force as soon as the Raven had arrived.
For now they could only pray!
A blast sounded out waking him up from his much needed rest. Only one, that can't be, he thought they had no Rangers out, maybe reinforcements had arrived. Another one sounded, damm wildling raiding party.
Racing outside he found others rushing around gathering their bows standing behind the make shift barrier they had made linking the towers and buildings together.
"Stick to the plan, men to your positions," he yelled, running to the Lord Commander's tower which he would defend. He saw Donal Noye and his men rush to the gate and entered shutting it behind them ready to stop any wilding who tried to breach it. "Ser Kevan hold them as long as possible at the barrier then retreat to the staircase and defend it with your life."
At the top of the tower he scanned around, noticing the dummy soldiers they posted to inflate their numbers as a more opposing force. Looking down he saw the first wave of wildings approaching.
"Nook and draw," he yelled struggling to make himself heard over the rushing wind and snow gale.
A few arrows were released before his order, as men struggled to hold the bow in the cold.
"Fire."
They continued to fire arrows as the wildlings broke through the barrier, and Ser Kevan's forces retreated to the buildings and the staircase. It was going to be a long and costly battle.
It was over, Lord Umber and his forces had arrived just as his men were down to the last defence about to burn the staircase, he had been looking Ygritte straight in her eyes, preparing to be hit by the arrow she had aimed at his chest, just as another Horn blasted but this time only one. The sound made her lose concentration for a second but that was all eh needed
He didn't kill her, he couldn't, he loved her, he now stood in a cell looking down at her where she was sat, her hands tied together.
"You're weak, Jon Snow." She spat him, "You're a traitor."
"No I never left the Night Watch I was only undercover."
"Was that all it was," she asked suddenly showing emotion on her face.
"At first," he admitted "But I do love you Ygritte and I know you feel the same way, that's why I couldn't kill you."
"You know nothing, Jon Snow." She shook her head turning away from him, and with that he walked out wishing things could have gone better.
As he walked out of the building where he was held, a hand grabbed him from behind.
"You're a traitor Lord Snow, and you will be hanged," he heard before a fist knocked him out. He hadn't seen who spoke but he knew from those words. Ser Alister Thorne was back.
