Varys's POV
The realm was still to united, even with Eddards death, the realm had united under King Renly. In some ways Eddard had served more for the realm in his death creating Martyr in which to unite under as he had died for them. It had worked in some ways, there was no longer a wise experienced battle hardened, fair and honest leader helping run the realm, and there was still uneasy tension between the Iron Islands and the rest of the Kingdoms despite re-declaring their fealty to the Iron Thone. Renly may be without wise counsel but he was still popular with the smallfolk and many lords after winning 2 wars and soon his reign would be even more secure with the marriage to Margaery Tyrell. If they wed and produced an heir the Tyrells would never support a Targeryeans not when their blood was on the throne. They need more allies and a weaker kingdom if they were to succeed, if they attacked now even with the Golden Company backing Dorne, the Tyrells and Stormlands alone would outnumber them 2 to 1, then when the Lannisters, Riverlands, and Crownlands joined in they would stand no chance, especially with no fleet either. For a Targeyrean to be put on the throne Renly had to die before the wedding but he couldn't risk another assassination, instead he would have to find other ways to break the Tyrell-Baratheon union, if he could but first to gather more allies. If he played the Golden company too early without revealing Deanerys first, his other player would not be believed, he needed a true Targeryean first
He walked now in a hooded gown following quietly behind Prince Oberyn, lucky with his importance, he could walk around the keep with him without being questioned. A potential ally and Targeryean loyalist now was now on the small council in the same position as one his distance ancestors once held for King Aegon I.
"Ah Lord Monford, a pleasure to see you," greeted Oberyn as they entered the small room where they had planned the meeting, "It has been to long since I have sat with another hosue who's blood share with another house the same as ours. One whom we both supported but has now since disappeared but we remain."
He noticed Lord Monford met Oberyn with a firm gaze, not giving away anything. "Aye we do but why do you bring it up since they are long gone."
"Aye if they are, and you now serve a new dynasty but in the same position as one of your ancestors served Aegon I, things change."
"We do what we must to survive, we both fought on the wrong side in the rebellion."
"The losing side you mean but not the wrong. We didn't murder babes in their beds, or discard our oaths or sack a city."
"Aye true, but what would you have me do? I serve the Crown" Lord Monford asked quizzically now looking at him obviously trying to deduce who he was.
It was his turn to speak and reveal his hood, "We ask you to wait, you know who I am, I have no doubt. Dyansties rise and fall some return, as we would have one return, we ask you to wait, bide your time as we do, and if thing come to pass, act on them. You will know what I mean when the time is right. Serve the true ruler, as we do. You are Master of Ships" With that he turned to leave followed by Prince Oberyn, but before exiting the room, he threw his hood back on spoke back to Lord Monford, "Be careful my Lord now, accidents are recurrent in King's landing."
He left Oberyn shortly hurriedly heading to the passageways only he and few others knew of, his little birds would soon be back to him with news from Gulltown, and Claw isle. He had more news to sift through. Tyrion Lannister had just announced his betrothal to one of Lord Hewit's daughters, his little bird believes it is Felicity a Maid of one and twenty. More news was Ser Bronn new Lord of Clegange's keep had just been betrothed to Jeyne Westerling, whom carried a bastard baby from the Iron Born. Although they were nothing compared to what one of his little birds in Old town reported, Paxter Redwyne's only daughter had just been betrothed to Lord Edric Dayne the squire for Lord Beric Dondarrion but also the Lord of Starfall and a loyal house to House Martell and where Daenerys currently resided. The next few months were going to be very interesting he thought.
