Chapter 19
Tris had had barely another thirty seconds with Four after their kiss, she had been hurried out of the lecture room by her friends, as they were all eager to get to the post-ranking party.
Four and Eric had needed to stay behind to deal with the recruits who had not made the top ten.
Marlene and Christina were particularly eager to head to the party, so that they could get Tris alone on their way.
They strategically dropped behind the rest of the recruits and cornered her.
"How long have you been hiding that from us, you sly thing?" Marlene asked, grabbing Tris by the arm excitedly.
"You're ranked first, and you've somehow snagged Four too," Christina said in awe, her voice tinged with the slightest bit of resentment.
"I didn't snag him, it just somehow, happened," Tris protested, knowing no one would accept such an answer.
"But seriously, how, when, where?" Marlene pressed animatedly.
"We just connected, I guess," Tris explained feebly. "Things developed, it was hard to stop it, really."
"And you thought dropping that bomb on everyone would be the cherry on the icing of your big day," Christina said snidely, obviously miffed over the whole evening.
"I didn't mean it to be like that, I was just so happy, especially because becoming an official agent meant we didn't have to hide anymore," Tris said honestly. "It's never been about winning, or 'snagging' Four, for me. I've just wanted to do my very best and prove I belong here."
"That's enough for me, for now," Marlene said with a giggle. "There's a party with our names on it." She sensed Christina and Tris would have to work some things out between them later, but she had enough details to make her content, for the time being.
As they entered the party they were surrounded by other agents, wanted to congratulate them, and ply them with alcohol.
Tris was particularly bombarded, as her ranking of first had circulated quickly, and many people wanted to congratulate her personally.
Once she had spoken with nearly every agent at the party, all in the space of about four minutes, she was cornered by Zeke and Lauren, Four's closest friends.
"Zeke, Lauren," Tris greeted them with a smile.
"So, you and my main man Four," Zeke said with a devilish grin. "I can't believe he didn't let on at all."
Lauren was a little less fiendish in her approach and said "It's nice to see Four's found someone he really likes. I was beginning to worry there was something wrong with him."
"So, I guess that news travelled pretty fast," Tris said with a weak smile.
Zeke laughed loudly, hooting a couple of times for good measure.
"Yeah, you could say that," Lauren said with a grin. "I think Uriah was about to explode with the information. He couldn't tell us fast enough."
"That's my baby bro," Zeke said with a grin. "Oh, congratulations on beating him, and everyone else, Tris."
"Do you know what position you're going to pick on Monday?" Lauren asked.
"I was thinking I'd like to work as a field agent, but specialise in roles working with and within the government," Tris said, after a moment's thought. There was no point in hiding what role she wanted, she was ranked first, it was natural to seek something so ambitious. "But I think I'd like to be involved in the annual training of new recruits, when possible."
"I see why Four likes you so much," Lauren said with a smile. "You certainly think big, and you don't back off from a challenge."
"What makes you think he likes me so much?" Tris said teasingly.
"Well, we can't know for sure, which is why we've trapped you with us, until he shows up," Zeke said, grinning wickedly.
"I figured as much," Tris said dryly.
"You date Four, you get us too," Lauren said with a chuckle. "Don't worry, you'll only have to go through this once. Once we've thoroughly observed you two together you'll be free to carry on your relationship in peace."
"An unscrutinised relationship, and life, seems like a distant dream," Tris said wryly.
"Well, to be fair, this probably will be the most attention you will receive in your life in one night," Zeke pointed out.
"Well, that attention is probably about to increase," Lauren said impishly. "Look who just walked in."
Four and Eric walked in together, and as usual, they appeared to be arguing. Four paused long enough to smile at Tris, before he turned back to Eric, apparently ending their tête-à-tête.
Four made a beeline for where Tris was standing with his friends.
Tris was unsure of how to act, or what to say, or what he would do. Kissing him in front of the lecture hall had been an impulse, and since then, she had had plenty of time to agonise over how she should and would act in public with him.
Four kissed her lightly on the lips, as if it was the most natural thing in the world, and put an arm around her waist, drawing her to him.
"Did I miss all of the post-ranking ruckus?" Four asking, a shadow of a laugh in his eyes, very well knowing the ruckus was not merely about the rankings.
"I'm sure there will be plenty of ruckuses for you to endure over the next few days," Lauren said pointedly.
"Way to go man, I'm so proud of you! A secret relationship with a recruit, you're the man," Zeke said heartily.
"Tris is standing right here, and I wouldn't exactly describe it that way," Four remarked evenly. "Why don't you two leave us alone? I'll talk to you two later, but I think Tris and I deserve a chance to talk."
"Talk, sure," Zeke said with a snicker.
Lauren hit him playfully in the arm, and said, "I'll make sure Shauna distracts him for a while. Have fun you two."
"Can we get out of here?" Tris asked quietly once they were left together.
"Not without attracting a lot of attention, and you really can't afford anymore tonight," Four told her.
"You mean we can't," Tris countered. "Well, how about we find a spot in a quiet corner?"
"That's a more feasible option," Four said, taking her hand and leading her straight to a corner he knew contained a two person couch.
They sat down together, Four drawing her close to him, as close as she could be without sitting in his lap.
"You look completely gorgeous tonight, I could barely keep from staring at you all through dinner," Four said quietly in her ear. "Were you all done up that way to make me crazy?"
Tris giggled and blushed, then said, "I think looking this way probably made me crazy about as much as it made you. I let Marlene and Christina give me a makeover to pass the time until the rankings were to be announced."
"Well, even if it made you a little crazy, I think it was worth it," he said, his breath ticking her ear. "I thought I was going mad when you kissed me in the lecture hall, I'd only been imagining that moment for weeks on end."
"I think I did go a little mad, kissing you like that. I hadn't planned it, but in that moment, it was like it was the only thing I should do," Tris told him. "At least it removes the possible complication of how to announce our relationship."
"I'll say," Four agreed with a deep chuckle.
"I don't suppose you've made any progress on figuring out who I overhead Eric plotting with?" Tris asked in a hushed tone.
"We can't talk about that here," Four said seriously. "I haven't really had a chance of late to focus on investigating that anyway."
"Maybe later, now that things are going to quiet down," Tris said in quiet acceptance.
"Well, now that you have first pick at the position you want, will you tell me what role you're going to ask Harrison for on Monday?" Four asked, changing the subject to something more suitable to talk about in public.
Tris and Four continued to talk quietly and intimately, content with just being able to spend time together, without lots of convoluted sneaking around.
The party ended some time after midnight, and Tris and Christina headed back to their dorm, accompanied by Will.
Tris had protested at Four wanted to walk her back to her dorm, she had insisted that she was more than capable of taking care of herself.
He had insisted that Peter was still alive, so if she wouldn't let him walk her back, she had to go with Will and Christina.
Tris had caved in. She had kissed Four goodnight, and headed off as the unwilling third wheel.
As they lay in bed after taking off their make up and putting their pyjamas on, Christina said, "I get why you had to hide your relationship with Four, but why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to put you in a position of keeping that secret, especially because you could have got in trouble if we'd been found out," Tris replied. "I wanted to tell you, I was bursting to tell you really. I've never had a boyfriend before, and I knew you'd have some advice. But I just couldn't tell you."
"Well, I sort of get why you didn't tell me, but I still wish you would have," Christina replied.
After a pause she said sadly, "You know, this might be the last late night chat we'll have. Depending on our Dauntless positions, we might not end up sharing a room, or even having rooms near each other."
"I guess you're right," Tris mused softly. "I'll probably have a permanent room here, I don't think I'll be making any attempt to spend any time living at home over the next five to ten years."
"You don't want to see your family?" Christina asked, shocked.
"Of course I do, and I'll definitely visit, but I want to throw everything I have at making my mark here, and to do that, I want to be completely consumed by this life," Tris explained. "I think it would be too hard to live with my family for any period of time, and conceal my work from them."
"I guess you're right," Christina agreed. "I'm ranked seventh anyway, so I might end up with a job that means I always have to be here. I don't even really know whether I want this to be me home base, or if I want to try and live in 'the real world'. I have to factor in Will as well."
"We'll just take things as they come," Tris said with sleepy calm. "It's the best way to do it here. One step at a time."
The next morning Tris awoke and lay in bed, appreciating the fact that for the day, the weekend in fact, she had nothing she had to do. Training was over. She had a brief break.
Then it struck her that all the free time was kind of an overwhelming thought. She had no idea how to fill that much free time. It seemed like such a luxury. Since joining Dauntless her days had been filled with more than enough to do, and her free time was limited, and therefore treasured, and she made the most of it.
What would she do with a full forty eight hours to herself? She couldn't spend it all with Four, he still had commitments. Will and Christina, and Uriah and Marlene would all be wanted to spend significant time together. Sure, they'd all hang out at some point, but forty eight hours was such a lot of time to fill!
I guess I could prepare for my life here, Tris mused eventually.
She had not brought much with her for the training process, as instructed. She'd brought anything from home that was important to her when she left, but she needed some new things, that fitted who she was now. Maybe some online shopping would be the thing to do. She could also check what out what she could find in the compound, and order in what every else she wanted. Then when she moved in to her new room, wherever it would be, she would have new things that would help her feel like it really was her new home.
Tris looked over at Christina, who was still sleeping, luxuriating in the joy of a sleep in. Well, she wouldn't wake her by turning a light on just yet.
Tris reached for her cell and started to make a list of things to do over the weekend, and a list of things she wanted to get for herself, now that she was a Dauntless agent.
It was a pity there was no way she could use her free time to try and find out who Eric was talking with, but maybe she could at least look in to Marcus Eaton, and familiarise herself with all of his offences. If she was going to help Tobias defeat his father, she would need to know what she was up against, and how she could make sure he paid for all of his crimes.
By the time Christina stirred Tris had a comprehensive list.
"How long have you been awake?" she asked with a yawn.
"Long enough to plan my weekend," Tris said with a smile.
"I hope your plans consist of sleep, sex and relaxation," Christina said impishly.
"It does include two of those things," Tris replied evasively.
"Tris, you really should sleep this weekend," Christina said in mock concern.
Tris hurled a pillow at her.
AN: A bit of a fluff filled chapter, but I hope you enjoyed it anyway! It does have some info about what is to come :) (I'm really excited about what is to come, by the way!)
