Chapter 24

"Tobias, it's your father," Tris said nervously.

Four sat there, as if he hadn't heard her, staring blankly at the wall.

"Your father, Marcus Eaton?" Tris prompted gently.

"He is not my father," Four said venomously.

"You are not his son," Tris said amended reassuringly, taking his hand in hers. "I wanted to warn you ahead of tomorrow morning, so you wouldn't react badly in front of Lauren and Zeke."

"Thank you," Four said hollowly.

"Tobias, we're going after this bastard, and we will catch him, and he will get what's coming to him," Tris said passionately. "I know it doesn't fix what he put you through, but he will pay for at least some of his crimes. The NSC wants us to get irrefutable evidence, and we're going to, and you're going to play a big part in that. We're going to get proof of everything he's ever done, and he will have to answer for his crimes."

"I don't want you involved in anything to do with him," Four said vehemently. "He's a dangerous man, with no morals, and you could end up seriously hurt, or worse, dead. You should not be assigned to this mission so early on, or ever."

"You can't dictate what I do and don't do, especially because of your own fear," Tris retorted hotly. "This is what I'm trained to do, and if Max, Harrison and Lauren have seen fit to assign me to this case, then I'm on this case. You can't stop me, and I certainly won't be stopping me, because I want to be a part of this, I want to beat him Tobias, not just for you, but for everyone he has hurt or could hurt."

"How could I want you to have anything to do with him, especially when I don't?" Four asked wretchedly. "I've spent years pretending he doesn't exist, and now I have to, so that I can make sure he pays for his crimes. That hard enough to accept without the added stress of knowing you'll be in potentially dangerous situations to get evidence to convict him?"

"I get that it's hard for you, and that its going to continue to be a difficult situation," Tris said gently. "I don't know what to say exactly, but there is this. Whenever I'd get frustrated with things, my mom would say this to me: 'God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.' We're being offered a chance to help make a change for the better, we need to focus on what we can do, instead of what is out of our control. Just trust that I'll be okay, the same way I trust that you're going to be okay, because we're strong, we're Dauntless."

Four nodded slowly, absorbing her words, looking tenderly at her.

"It's going to come out, that I'm his son," Four said in quiet acceptance. "It might not be an issue, or all hell could break loose."

"We'll face it together, come what may," Tris said reassuringly. "Do you want to talk about this more now? If you need space, that's okay with me. We'll be talking about this every day, probably for weeks on end, until this mission is complete. It might be a good idea to forget about it for tonight."

"I'd appreciate a distraction," Four said with a sly grin.

"Perfect, we should discuss what we're going to do about Jeanine Matthews," Tris said enthusiastically, knowing that Four had not been thinking of the Deputy NSA, but of more physical matters.

Four groaned and pushed a hand through his hair in frustration.

"Tris, it's a pretty serious accusation to make," Four said seriously. "She's the Deputy NSA, if she's actually plotting with Eric, there are unimaginable ramifications. Are you positive it was her voice?"

"I told you before, I'm absolutely certain," Tris said firmly. "It's her, and if we look into it, I'm sure we'll get proof. You said before that you'd get started on trying to get evidence as soon as possible."

"I know, it's just, it's had a little time to sink in," Four countered. "But I do believe you, I'm just having trouble believing them, if you get what I mean."

"Oh, I get it. Well, I totally believe it of Eric," Tris said with a grimace. "Still, we don't even know what they're plotting, hopefully it's just some grab for power, and not something that will threaten many people's lives."

"Tris, power grabs usually threaten at least one person's life, because there's someone in a higher position standing in the way of what you want," Four pointed out. "Now, can we please move to another type of distraction? Our lives are going to be filled with espionage, terrorism and corruption for who knows how long. Let's just forget, for a little while?"

Tris slid across the bed towards him and cupped his face in her hands and kissed him gently.

Four had other ideas, grabbing her and pushing her up against the wall his bed backed onto, kissing her fervently.

His hands moved from her waist to the front of her shirt and began to make quick work of her button.

Tris's heart was racing, but the way Four's lips and tongue tangled with her own felt too electrifying to let her dwell on the nervousness she felt. Their physical relationship was entering a dimension they had only skirted around before, but she didn't quite want to stop it, not yet.

"Did I mention already that you look completely sexy, dressed in that suit," Four said with a growl. "Turns out the whole 'power suit' thing is a complete turn on."

Tris gave a breathy little moan and nodded as he pulled her shirt off her, his calloused hands sending little shocks to every bit of exposed flesh that they skimmed over.

They continued to kiss, Tris running her hands under his shirt, enjoying the feel of his well developed muscles, her fingers brushing his nipples in experiment.

Her action was rewarded with a primal growl from Four and she was quite pleased with herself.

She didn't have long to dwell on this, as her mind went complete blank as Four's hands went to touch her breasts over the top of her bra.

Tris almost stopped breathing for a moment as his fingers touched the sensitive flesh.

He continued to kiss her, and she kissed him back, still not ready to stop things.

Tris decided to even the playing field a little and pulled Four's shirt up and over his head and threw it aside.

He pulled her towards him, and she climbed on top of his, straddling his lap and kissing him.

His hands were on her waist, and she would have noticed them moving up higher towards the clasp of her bra if she hadn't suddenly realised she could feel Four's physical reaction to her as she sat on his lap.

She was startled out of this realising as she felt his fingers struggling with the clasp of her bra and she pulled back, her breathing ragged.

"Too much," she panted. "Not ready."

Four dropped his hands, breathing heavily as well.

"It might be time to call it a night," Tris said. "I could really use a shower before bed. It's been a long day."

"I can assure you I'll be taking a shower too. A long, cold one," Four said wryly.

Tris climbed off his bed, grabbed her shirt and put it back on, doing the buttons up quickly.

Four sat on his bed, apparently trying to compose himself.

Tris approached him and said quietly, "I'll see you in the morning?"

"Of course," he replied, placing a hand gently on her cheek.

"I'm sorry, that I'm not ready for more," she said, a little strained.

"Never apologise for that," Four said seriously. "I'm sorry for getting carried away."

"Never apologise for that," Tris countered, giving him a soft kiss. "How about this? I promise to always let you know if you get too carried away. And we don't need to apologise for either of those things."

Four nodded, giving her a final kiss in farewell, and she slipped out of his room and headed for her own.

The next morning after breakfast, Four, Lauren, Zeke and Tris all headed straight up to the office assigned to Tris and Lauren for the duration of the mission.

"I can't believe you wouldn't even let me talk over a little bit of information over breakfast," Zeke whined to Lauren. "I can tell Four already knows what this mother of a case is, because he's not asking questions. I can't have pillow talk with Shauna about this case, so it's not like I've had a chance to do any chatting over this case since you unloaded on me yesterday afternoon!"

"You done, Zeke?" Lauren asked with a raised brow. "Good, because we're going to talk about it now. Four, how much did Tris tell you last night?"

"Just a brief overview, who and what really, no specific plans of attack," Four said professionally.

"Well, what we're going to need from you, and Max wants you specifically, is this," Lauren began.

They talked at length at the different aspects of Eaton's life that they would need to explore, in the sense of exposing incriminating electronic evidence. They discussed who Four would get to help him, and after an hour and a half or so Four and Zeke had headed off to get started on their assignments for the mission.

Lauren and Tris were reading up on absolutely everything they could to do with Eaton, to make sure they left no stone unturned before they headed out into the field to try and get some answers and evidence in person.

Tris didn't know how long they'd been working in silence for when she heard Lauren release a sharp gasp.

There was a pause, then Lauren said, her voice serious, "Four is Marcus Eaton's son. How long have you know?"

Tris closed her eyes in concern and tried to compose herself.

"A few weeks now," she answered slowly.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Lauren asked heatedly.

"It wasn't my secret to tell. Besides, you've known him longer than I have," Tris pointed out.

"He's always been just Four to me," Lauren replied, pensively. "Do Max and Harrison know?"

"They must, they look into everyone before they recruit them," Tris said confidently, though not feeling completely secure.

"Regardless, he's still the son of a suspected terrorist, we have to investigate him ourselves, and speak to Harrison, he can speak to Max if he thinks it's necessary," Lauren said firmly

"Well, okay. But we should keep this to ourselves. I don't have any reason to suspect him, and if he's completely in the clear, there's no point in making his life here difficult," Tris said pleadingly. "It's Four. If you knew him the way I did, you wouldn't even have to consider the possibility he could be involved."

"I don't want to, and I don't think he is involved, but I can't leave anything to chance. This is something you need to understand," Lauren said forcefully.

"I do, but I just wish I didn't have to," Tris said stubbornly.

"I get it. So let's just get to work, just you and me, I don't want to do anything that will cause Four any distress. If he's in the clear, which I'm sure he will be, this will just be a distant nightmare before too long," Lauren said, feeling very tired all of a sudden. She trusted Four, and she knew her superiors did, but they would also frown upon her not making certain that he had no dishonest ties with his father.

Tris nodded, and thought seriously for a moment before saying, "Look, I might as well tell you some of the things you're going to find before you start digging. I know you'll need to confirm them, but I'd rather you heard them from me."

Tris began to tell Lauren some of the things Four had told her, about his mother, about the abuse he had received from his father. She told him about the scars she had personally seen on Four's body, old scars, that had been inflicted long before his days at Dauntless.

"He must hate his father," Lauren said, truly shocked by some of the things Tris had shared. "I didn't need any motivation to take this guy down, but you better believe I'll be happy if it gives Four some retribution. What an awful, abhorrent man."

"Please don't tell him you know," Tris said softly. "He likes being here, where no one looks at him with pity. He's the strongest person I know, and he'd hate to look weak in front of his friends."

"I don't pity him, but I understand what you mean," Lauren agreed. "This is between you and me. The only thing I worry about is the possibility of Four coming across his father on this case, and blowing his cover, and our cover, and possibly losing it with his father."

"So he doesn't do any field work," Tris said matter-of-factly. "We need him on the IT side of things, you know we do. So let's finish getting together information to show Harrison, that proves that Four has no ties with his father, and will be an asset to us, provided he doesn't leave the compound for this mission."

Lauren agreed with her and they set about compiling proof of the abuse Four had suffered, and the fact that he had cut all ties from his father once he had left home.

After lunch they went straight to see Harrison, who looked over all their information thoroughly, then looked at them both seriously.

"Thank you for coming to me with this. You did the right thing," he said. "Of course, we're already aware of Four's family connections, we were when we recruited him. We hoped that what he had suffered would help drive him to help eradicate evil men like his father. Of course, as agents, you both needed to consider the possibility that we might not know, or that Four might be hiding something, which of course he is not, and you have the proof. Today, you both passed a test. You thought like agents, and not like Four's friends. Good work."

"We haven't mentioned any of this to anyone else," Tris said. "We're planning on keeping it that way."

"That's a good choice," Harrison agrees. "Yourselves, Max and I will be the only ones who do know, unless Four decides to tell people. Of course, once the media gets all over this after Eaton is arrested and convicted, Four will probably get dragged into it. But let's not put the cart in front of the horse. That's a problem for another time."

They left Harrison's office and Tris turned to Lauren and groused, "I feel like I've got problems coming out my ears."
