A/N
So sorry! D: I know that I promised a fast update, but my computer suddenly decided that it would be a good idea to glitch, sputter, pretend to work for a while, and the crash every two seconds. T^T But we have a new computer now, so I will be able to keep my promises from this point on!
Let it be known that I, ashen snowflakes, hereby swear to use this new computer that we just got to its full potential and update as rapidly as I can with as many chapters as I can!
Although I do have a treat for you in this chapter… Daddy's coming into the picture, and this is an unusually long chapter for me! I looked at the word count, and it is over twice as long as some chapters. :D
But there is my apology, and here is my chapter!
Third Person POV
Rin groaned as he sat up, holding a hand to his temple. His mind was sluggish to reboot, and his stomach churned from the jump between worlds.
He glanced around, trying to get where he was. Trees, grass, rocks, a little girl looking at him in horror from the edge of those tre-…
He was instantly more awake, jumping upright and facing the girl with a snarl etched on his face. It was the human's fault he was like this… all the humans!
His mind was simply enraged now, and all his demonic instincts shrieked at him to destroy that which had made him so fearful and angry. Yet, somewhere in his damaged mind, another voice told him that this wasn't right, that he shouldn't lay so much as a finger of this little girl so paralyzed in fear at the sight of a boy with fangs, a lashing tail, claws, and a bandage wrapped around his face that was beginning to come undone.
"/Human…/" he hissed, taking a step closer to her. The instincts cheered him on to kill, kill this child and tear her apart. But the other voice cried out for him to just stop it already, that he was scaring her.
His decision was made for him as the little girl screamed in terror and ran away, somewhere into the woods. Or maybe it was out of it… Rin neither knew nor cared at that very moment.
Rin began to follow her and finish what he'd started, but after a few steps he halted; the cheering was dying down and the other voice was getting louder.
With the new volume came a pulsating headache, one that made Rin have to lean against a tree for support, holding his head in both hands and snarling like an animal.
Images flashed through his mind, colors too bright and sounds too loud; A white haired man with glasses wearing black clothing bursting into blue flames, a man dressed in ridiculously bright and extravagant clothes holding an equally strange umbrella on a sunny day, a small blonde girl with her legs covered in vine-like marks gardening, and another person, somebody whom he felt that he was so close to grasping the identity of but yet so far, the image only a blurry outline.
He found himself staggering deeper into the woods, finally falling to his knees in front of a small lake. He tore the bandage off, continuing to scratch his face. The marks healed very quickly, scabbing over and healing in only a minute.
After a few minutes of this the pain lessened, the repeating images finally snapping away from his head like they were jaws, teeth cutting into the flesh of his psyche that had just been released.
Taking a few deep breaths, Rin steadied himself on the ground with his hands.
"What was that…?" he asked himself quietly, both eyes wide. He did not realize he'd torn off the bandage around his eye, since he could still not see out of it for the time being, and just continued to breath.
In and out he could feel the air in his lungs, and it soothed him. Something familiar, that he could be positive was there even before he'd been attacked by humans, before he lost his memory.
Attacked by humans… he frowned. Somehow, that sentence seemed almost wrong to him.
A nudge on his leg pulled him out of his thoughts, the headache receding into a dull thud with the external stimuli.
Looking down, Rin stared down at the creature; it was certainly a wolf, or at least had the form of it. But this creature was covered in blue flames that gave off no heat.
"My son…" came a hollow voice from it, the creature's jaws stretching into an unnatural grin, one that sent a shudder down the spine of the dark-haired boy.
"Wh-who are you?!" he yelped, jumping away from the burning creature, stumbling slightly to get a hold on the ground with his feet.
The thing took a step towards him, leaving behind some of its paw as he went as if it were deteriorating, burning away even without heat.
"You don't remember me, Rin?" asked the voice in mock sympathy, grinning even wider before sitting down at the boy's feet where he'd been backed up against a tree.
"I know that you hit your head hard, my son, but is it really that bad that you have forgotten me, your own father?"
Suddenly something clicked in Rin's head; a name worked its way onto his lips, freezing there for a moment before pushing its way through in barely a whisper.
"Satan…?"
As the wolf - only a momentary vessel for the demon lord – began to peel at the base of the tail and begin deteriorating more, it nodded and let out an eerie chuckle.
"There you go, my child," It rasped, the revealing of its muscles underneath the rotting flesh having gotten to his throat, and was now beginning to strip away the muscles on its legs.
"Now, it wasn't so hard to remember your father, was it?" Rin stared at Satan for a long time, or at least what felt like it. He had no clue what to think; one part of him wanted to greet his father happily as a son should greet his own father, and another part of him yelled to run away, run away and keep on going until you find…
Find where?
Rin didn't know, and pushed this side away, forcing his body to relax in order to show his father that he was no longer as terrified as he had been.
Picking up on this, the almost completely destroyed wolf body smirked again, then said "Let us go back home, my son. It is about time that you meet all of your subjects, and this body is not long for the world."
With that the wolf, now barely more than a torso, head, and three legs held together by rapidly melting bones and bits of muscle, went up to a tree. It bit into its own leg, making a small trickle of blood form and pool on the ground. A terrifying void opened up, forming into a gate.
"But... Amaimon..." Rin began to say, remembering the reason he'd come into this world in the first place. But Satan just sighed, and replied evenly "He will be fine. It is not like that one is without his own sense and means of protection."
With a glance at Rin and one last boney smile, a scratchy "Come now, my child." Was whispered into the wind before the blue flames receded, spilling into the gate and leaving a dead wolf body behind, spilling out the last little bits of blood the spent body had to offer.
Rin hesitated a moment, trying to see if those two little voices would fight again. But they remained silent, not bothering to speak up in the matter of whether to follow his father into that terrifying hole in the earth that looked like a mouth waiting to swallow him whole or stay and look for his brother.
Finally, he made up his mind.
Before he had time to chicken out, Rin threw himself down into the pit that swallowed him in seconds, disappearing and leaving only the mangled corpse of the wolf behind.
