Chapter 59:
An Unsuspecting Surprise
...
The sun was starting to set as Mario and crew made their way out of Bowser's castle. The sun's bright rays left warm upon their skins compared to the coldness of the dungeon. They started their way home with Mario and Luigi up front, Peach and Daisy in the middle, and Kassie trailing in the rear. At this moment, their future seemed bright until...
"Look out!"
Everyone turned just in time to see a light blue beam coming their way. Before anyone could react, Kassie jumped in its path and took the hit. Within seconds, the small toad was getting encased inside a shell of ice.
"Kastoadra!" They yelled, shock and surprise on what just happened to their friend.
"That's one down, and four to go." The culprit soon of that blast came out of the shadows and revealed herself to the heroes.
"Pompey," Luigi called her name.
She smirked. "Hey there, Kasanova; surprise to see me?"
"What did you do to Kastoadra?" Daisy demanded.
"Well, from the looks of it, I just turn her into a block of ice thanks to this Freeze Gun I found in Kamek's lab." She shrugged. "Not the most interesting way to capture someone, but I guess it'll do."
"Please, why are you doing this?" Peach asked.
"Why?" She repeated. "Because I can, that's why. And now I'll about to do what the king himself couldn't... capture the heroes and the princesses."
Everyone grew tense as she held up the Freeze Gun and points it straight at them. But before the trigger can be pulled, there was a sudden 'whack' followed by a heavy 'thump' as Pompey fell down on the ground. The black hair Pom Pom was left moaning in pain as Mario and friends look up in shock to see who their saver is.
"That was payback,"
...
...
"Wendy..."
The pink koopa quickly look up at the group in front of her. Her blue eyes scanned everyone until they landed on one individual and that one individual alone. She tossed aside the hammer she had used to knock Pompey unconscious and ran straight to into the group.
Both Peach and Daisy went spinning when she ran pass them, leaving them confused and disorientated. Mario, on the other hand, didn't know what hit him; one second he was standing on his own two feet and the next was on the ground face first. As for his brother, he was certainly locked in the female koopa's bear hug as she checked him over.
"Oh Luigi," she cried, "I was so worried about you,"
Luigi smiled and hugged her back. "I was worried about you too, Orabelle."
As the two shared their moment together, Mario, Peach, and Daisy looked upon them in stun awed. It was bizarre to see them together. They both were so different from each other, but they act as if they were the same. In an odd sort of way, it was rather sweet.
"Aww, isn't that nice?" said a familiar voice. "Two enemies getting along so well"
The others turn and gasped. "Kastoadra!"
Kassie smiled. She was no longer frozen inside the block of ice. Instead she was wrapped comfortably in the arms of the 'mystery' man that saved them earlier.
"Kastoadra, are you alright?" Peach asked all mother-like.
"I'm fine, Princess," she assumed. "Thanks to Mr. Burly here,"
"Burly?" the large man mumbled. 'At least, it's more creative than Ray.'
"How did you get her out?" Daisy asked him.
He shrugged. "There was a Heat Gun that came with the Freeze Gun; I just used that to thaw her out. Although, you might want a doctor to look over her; she feels a bit cold."
It was true, Kassie did look a bit pale and she was shivering very so slightly.
"Eh, excuse me," Everyone attention turned to Wendy who was looking frustrated.
"In case, you all haven't but Luigi is still hurt here and needs to see a doctor," She points at Mario. "You...get off your fat red ass and start carrying your brother back home."
"Wha...me?" Mario asked. He was completely baffled at what was going on.
Wendy scoffed. "Does anyone else have a fat red ass here? I don't think so."
Mario frowned and turned to the others who just shrugged in response. He sighed and stood up to help his brother. When he moved him to warp an arm around his neck, Wendy stopped him and demanded that he should carry him on his back. Luigi protested against it, stating he was fine to walk on his own. However, the pink koopa wouldn't any of that.
"If he's strong enough to throw Bowser half way across the room, then he's strong enough to carry you back to town." She had argued.
In the end, she got her way and Mario was force to carry his brother on his back. Once they were all settled, the group of seven finally started to head back home. 'Burly' took lead, with Kassie still in his arms. Mario and Luigi came up next with Wendy walking beside them, keeping an eye on her beloved mate. Peach and Daisy took up rear, watching the scene before them.
"Well, this is going to be an interesting walk home." Daisy commented. Peach simply nods in agreement.
...
...
The walk home was silent and awkward. No one said much except for Kassie who was trying to break all the tension in the air. But the small toad grew tired very quickly. After all, she was still sick and all the excitement she been through had drain all of her energy.
Both her and Luigi had fallen asleep by the time they had it to town. The moon had replaced the sun and everyone was tired from the day's experiences. They head straight for Toadley Clinic so their two friends can get some treatment. Once there, the two princesses had to part ways with the group and return to the castle, knowing full well that Toadsworth and the others were worried about them.
They say their good-byes and promise to be back in the morning. Mario and 'Burly' enter the clinic soon after they left. Upon seeing them, a nurse gasped in surprise and call for help at the front desk. Minutes later, several nurses and doctors appeared and loaded Kassie and Luigi up in stretchers, waking them up in the process.
They asked what happened and after being filled in, they disappeared behind the large double doors with their patients. Now that his brother was in good hands, Mario let out a sigh of huge relief. He turn back to sit in the waiting room until he was called when he remembered a certain someone was still with him.
"Well, he is going to be okay or not,"
Mario blinked as he had temporary forgotten about the pink koopa and the mystery man who helped saved them. He took a few seconds to register her question before answering.
"Uhm, the doctors say he's going to fine but they're going to run some tests to make sure."
"And Kassie?" Roy asked. Mario raised an eyebrow at the nickname but answered anyways.
"She's going to be fine too. They just have to warm her up."
He nodded and turned to go sit in the empty waiting room. Wendy followed his example and sat in the seat next to him. Mario just stood there, confusion written all over his face. He understood why Wendy was here but he couldn't get why 'Burly', who was a complete stranger to them all, was willing to wait for the outcome of his friends.
"Well, are ya jus' gonna stand there or are ya gotta sit?" He said, breaking Mario out of his thoughts.
The red plumber frowned and slowly made his way to a seat across from them. Time pass as the three of them waited to hear the news of Luigi's and Kassie's condition. The waiting room was full of awkward tension; even the toad nurse sitting on the front counter can sense it, although she was mostly nervous to be in the same room as one of the infamous Koopalings.
Seconds turned into minutes; minutes turned into hours. Mario was pretty much half asleep when one of the doctors came out with a clipboard in hand. This doctor was a toadette wearing a white coat, brown shoes, and a green mushroom hat with white spots. She had a streak of blond hair hanging down her face which was being held back by a green hair pin.
Both Wendy and Roy stood up quickly when they saw her. Mario woke up at their sudden movement and turn to see what they were looking at. He too stood up from his seat when he saw the doctor walking towards them.
"I'm assuming all three of you are here for both Ms. Kastoadra and Mr. Luigi." The doctor asked. They all nodded. "I'm Doctor Truffles; Doctor Toadley had an emergency call earlier and won't be returning until tomorrow. I'll be filling in on his behave."
"How are they Doctor Truffles?" Mario asked.
"Both are doing just fine, especially Luigi considering he got hit on the head with a large hammer. However, no surgery is required and with some rest he'll be back on his feet in a few weeks."
Doctor Truffles paused for moment, giving them some time to let out their sighs of relief and ease their worry that the worst was over. She continues on after that.
"Kastoadra herself was just suffering from a mild case of hypothermia. Given her certain condition, we were a bit worried about her at first. But in the end, we got her warmed up fairly quickly and should be free to go home by tomorrow."
"Speakin' o' her condition, jus' how sick is she, Doc?" 'Burly' asked. He was aware Kassie hasn't been feeling good lately. He just hoped she'll get better soon.
"She doesn't have any illness if that's what you're referring to."
"Really?" Mario frowned. "Because she has been feeling nauseous and tired for these last few days,"
"Common symptoms when someone is expecting,"
"Expecting?" 'Burly' questioned. "Expecting what?"
"A baby," Doctor Truffles answered. "We ran some test earlier and it's been confirm that Kastoadra is indeed pregnant."
