Author's Note Today:
Finally the chapter that contains the answer to our big question.
A guest asked me if I've watch Sonic Boom yet. Yes I have, on demand (I can't wake up so early in the morning). I like it, it's humorous which is a plus for me. The only thing I hate about it is the fact that the episodes are only 15 minutes long. But other than that, it's good.

Enjoy the chapter :)

Chapter 64:
Answers
...
It's been a three weeks and so far things haven't been going so well. Just last week, everyone in town had learned about the two mismatch couple and as suspected, most were in disbelief and against the whole thing.
Luigi was still in the hospital so he and Wendy were basically shielded from all the commotion going on outside. Kassie and Roy, on the other hand, were forced to handle it themselves. This was especially hard on Kassie who had to deal with the stress of her changing body in addition to the stress of everyone's criticism. Roy try to shield her from the ordeal, throwing angry glares and threats of pain to anyone who even look at her funny.
At this moment, the two were in Doctor Toadley's office after receiving a call from him. The toad doctor had spent the last few weeks trying to figure out the cause of Kassie's pregnancy and he might have come up with a solution. Eager to finally hear the answer to their big question, they quickly made way to his clinic.
"Hello, Kastoadra, Roy; how are you two feeling today?" asked the doctor.
"Eh, you know, stupid toads wit' their stupid opinions," commented Roy.
"I guess you could say it could be a lot better," said Kassie
"I apologize, I'm afraid I can't do much about that," He said.
"That's okay; it's not your fault."
"But you could make up fo' it by tellin' us what you found,"
Doctor Toadley nodded and sat down in his chair. "Well, for one thing I..."
There was a knock on the door. Doctor Toadley excused himself and asked the person to come in. The door opened revealing a familiar person.
"Ah, Professor E. Gadd; is your timing perfect? It is. Please, come in,"
The professor nodded and entered inside the room. Roy and Kassie watched with curiosity as the short man made his way to the desk with a book in hand.
"Now, you two must be the other couple I've been hearing so much about." said E. Gadd. "My name is Professor E. Gadd. Doctor Toadley and I have been working together to find the solution to your situation."
"Really?" asked Kassie.
"So what can you tell us, Professor?" Roy said. "What exactly made Kassie pregnant?"
"The answer to that is quite simply..." said the Professor. "You cause her to become pregnant."
Roy pouted. "Well, I know that."
"I think what Roy means, professor..." Kassie interrupted. "Is how he was able to do it? We're two different to have a kid."
"Ah, now that's a completely different answer, one we have found both surprising yet logical."
"Well what are you waiting for?" Roy asked impatiently. "Tell us, already,"
"First we have to ask you some questions to confirm our findings," said Toadley. "Now Kastoadra, have you eaten anything different during the time you have conceived?"
Kassie blinked and try to think back on that week. "I don't think so,"
"Nothing? Anything at all?"
Kassie shook her head. "No, I pretty sure I didn't try anything different that week."
"Wait, how about dat mushroom you got from da old lady?" Roy suggested.
Kassie gasped. "Oh yeah, that mushroom,"
"Care to explain?" The professor asked.
She nodded. "Well, I was in the woods one day, waiting for Roy to show up on our date when I saw this woman begin attacked by this huge wild Piranha Plant. She looked like she was in real trouble so I ran over to help her..."
"Only ta get yourself captured in its vines," interrupted Roy.
Kassie frowned. "Hey, you weren't much help either. The old lady had to save all of our butts."
He groaned. "Don't remind me,"
"How did she save you?" Doctor Toadley asked.
Kassie shrugged. "I don't know; she used some kind of magic spell. I'm guessing she was a sorceress or something."
"Regardless, she still thanked us fo' our help and gave us dis strange color mushroom as an award." said Roy.
"Interesting," said the Professor. "By any chance do you remember her name?"
"I think her name was Cybele or Sybele...something like that." Kassie replied. "She said she wasn't from around here."
"And this mushroom... what did it look like?"
"Like any other mushroom but with pink and blue spots." Roy answered.
Both Doctor Toadley and Professor E. Gadd share a look before nodding in agreement. The Professor held up the old book in his hands and started flipping through the pages. Once he found the page he was looking for, he held it up for them both to see.
"Was this the mushroom?" He asked.
Roy and Kassie lean forward to get a better look. On the page was a picture of a white mushroom with pink and blue spots. They nodded in verification.
"Yup, that's it."
"What kind o' mushroom is dat anyways?"
"It's called the Fertile Mushroom." called the Doctor
"The Fertile Mushroom?" Both Roy and Kassie questioned.
The Professor nodded. "It's a special mushroom that allows the consumer to be completely fertile."
"These mushrooms were usually given to those who were sterile and are unable to have children." explained Toadley. "Eventually, their popularity grew and even productive couples started taking them just so they could conceive on the first try. Unfortunately, due to such high demands, these mushrooms were being pick faster than they could grow, causing them to become nearly extinct."
"These mushrooms were usually found in luscious forests, mainly in the Ever Grow Forest. But even so, they are extremely rare now and you'll have to search the entire forest area just to find one."
They paused for moment to give the couple some time. Kassie and Roy were silent as they let the information soak in. Kassie subconsciously place a hand on her belly. Who would have thought, all this was caused by a simple mushroom?
"Of course," the Professor continues. "We're not a hundred percent if it's the mushroom completely."
They blinked. "What do you mean?"
"Well, it's true that the Fertile Mushroom can allow you to become fertile. But even so, that won't change the fact that you're genetic code is still too different from Roy to create a child." He placed a hand on his chin in thought. "That's what I'm trying to figure out."
Kassie and Roy shared a look. "Uhm, Professor...?"
He blinked. "Yes?"
"Well, I wasn't the only one to have the mushroom," Kassie explained.
"So you shared it?" The two nodded.
"Hmm...Professor, is it possible that the Fertile Mushroom should have affected their genes in some way?" Doctor Toadley asked.
"Well, the Fertile Mushroom does have special properties. For that to happen, it could have altered their chromosomes within the zygote to be similar enough so they can reproduce."
"So what? Are you saying dat the mushroom change us somehow?"
"Not you entirely, just your reproductive cells. However, it is not permanent. The effects of the mushroom fade away after some time. If you don't mind me asking… after consuming the mushroom, how long did you wait before having sexual intercourse?"
Kassie blushed slightly but answer the questioned anyways. "Uh, about a few hours,"
The professor nodded. "That seems about right. The best results are usually within the first twenty-four hours."
"So we were about to conceive our baby thanks to some strange mushroom?" Roy asked to make sure.
"Do the facts point to it? Yes, it does." said Doctor Toadley. "How the only thing left to discuss is the baby itself. Now have you two decided on what you wanted to do?"
Roy glances over to Kassie. The indigo colored toad cased her head down. He sighed, "Actually Doc, Kassie is the one to decide on it. Anything she said, I'll go with it."
Toadley nodded understandably. "In that case, Kassie, have you decided yet? If not, you have three options…One, if you don't wish to continue carrying the child, then I would suggest an abortion."
"No!" Kassie interrupted. "I don't want to kill it, regardless if it's a person or not."
"Then I'll suggest one of the other two options…Once the infant is born, you could place it up for adoption or you could raise it yourself. Now you don't have to answer that right away, you still have plenty of time to think about it."
Kassie sighed. "Actually, Doctor Toadley, I've already made my decision. I..."
She jumped slightly when she felt someone took her hand. She looks over to see it was Roy. The purple tighten his hold on her, indicating his support. She smiled; glad to have him on her side, regardless of what happens.
"I mean, we decide to keep the baby and raise it ourselves."

Ending Note:
So the thing that really got Kassie and Roy pregnant was a rare magic mushroom.
Cybele is the name of the sorceress that they met. She's a character from a short chapter book called "Mario and the Incredible Rescue". Super Mario Wiki have the plot for it. She's an old woman with glittering green eyes, living in a cottage in a forest that she owns.

Fun Fact - when it comes to Hybrids, it usually works for two different breeds of the same species where the number of chromosomes are nearly the same. Some examples of hybrids are ligers (lion/tiger) and mules (horse/donkey). Most hybrids are not sterile, meaning they are not able to produce off springs of their own. However there are a rare few hybrids that are fertile such as Wolf hybrids (dog/wolf).
