AN: Here is the final chapter, the last post for this story. It's extra long, and needs a few edits, but I wanted to get it up for you all. (So please forgive the typos.) I hope you all enjoy it it and enjoy seeing what life further down the road has to offer for Four and Tris.
Epilogue 2.0
March 2015
"I like that moving in means that our stuff is permanently in the one, larger room, and that we will now sleep in the same room every night together, instead of switching between two rooms," Four said with a grin.
"Well, when we're out on assignments we won't be sleeping in the same room," Tris pointed out drolly.
"Oh yes, and when Marlene and Christina insist you attend a mandatory 3 monthly sleepover I guess we won't be together then either," Four added, setting a box down in the room they'd just walked into.
"That's the last box, right?" Tris asked.
"It's your stuff, don't you know?" Four teased.
"Well, sometimes it's hard for me to remember all the stuff I have, you know, because I don't buy or choose half of it," Tris said dryly.
Four let out a deep chuckle, knowing the truth in her words. Marlene and Christina still took it upon themselves to make sure Tris had enough fashionable items of clothing and accessories.
It had been a bit over a year since Tris had returned from her big Euro-mission with Uriah, and about a year and a half since she first started at Dauntless.
Just after the New Year, the beginning of 2015, Four had said to Tris, "So, I was thinking, as part of starting off the New Year, we should get one of those cohabitation applications."
"What for?" Tris had queried absently from her place at her desk, where she was closely going over some notes for a case she was working on.
"Tris, put your work down a listen for a minute," Four said seriously. "I didn't want to do this in some cheesy over the top way, but I kind of didn't want you not to get what I was saying and have to spell it out either."
"I'm sorry," Tris said contritely. "I'm paying attention now. So, you were asking me about getting a cohabitation application. Oh, oh."
Comprehension dawned on her as she realised the meaning of his words.
"I think that's a good idea," she had said, trying to sound calm and casual.
A big grin had spread across Four's face, and then Tris had grinned too, and pretty soon his lips were on hers.
So, they had applied, had been cleared quickly by Harrison, and had been assigned a new apartment, one big enough to comfortably accommodate both of them. They had packed up their rooms and were ready to move in as soon as the room was ready.
Their words may have had a lightness to them, downplaying the significance of what moving in together meant, but they were both aware of the meaning it really held. It was a sense of permanence, and sense of seriousness, another step in their relationship developing and maturing. Their toothbrushes would sit side by side in their bathroom cabinet, they would have a shared set of drawers for their clothing. They would automatically retire to their room, and their bed in the evening, instead of deciding where to spend the night together.
They stood next to one another, looking around their new room, boxes here and there, looking a little haphazard, but not messy, and definitely homey.
"Our room," Tris said softly.
"I like it," Four agreed, taking her hand. "I like the look of the bed especially. Should we try it?"
Four didn't wait for a response, but scooped Tris up in his arms and carried her across to the bed as she giggled, dropping her on it and proceeded to kiss her thoroughly.
September 7th 2016
"Four, I'm supposed to be in a meeting with Joshua Sheen right now," Tris said seriously. "I don't have time to do whatever this is now. I'm sorry, I just don't."
"Oh, you mean your meeting with him at 2, just down the hall?" Four queried calmly. "Okay, you'd better go. Actually, I think I'll walk with you, stick my head in a say hi."
Tris straightened her suit jacket and laughed. "You do love giving the newer junior leaders a hard time, don't you?"
"Got to keep them all in line," Four said with a grin. "Fear and respect go hand in hand, you know."
Tris gave him a playful shove, knowing he didn't precisely mean that, and was choosing to be cheeky.
Tris knocked on Joshua's door and opened it straight away, and walked in, she was senior to him, and they did not tend to stand on ceremony at Dauntless, unless of course it was to show respect to a much senior agent.
"Ah, he's not here," Tris said slowly. "Maybe he went to look for me, I am a few minutes late."
"I doubt that," Four said with a sly grin, stepping into the room behind her. "He's not here because I told him he should be elsewhere at this hour, right after I had him request this meeting."
"That's a lot of effort to go to," Tris said, her brow furrowed. "You've got something planned, but I can't imagine what. It can't be anything related to a mission, seeing as we're here for the next couple of months, training the new recruits, and I can't believe you went to such lengths just so we could make out right now. So, what gives?"
"I have something important to say, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't interrupted, because I want to say this today, specifically today," Four said mysteriously.
"What's the big deal about today?" Tris asked.
"Two years ago, I realised I loved you, I was sure of it, mainly because I had wrestled with my feelings for you for days. I'd never felt drawn to anyone the way I was to you. I'd barely known you for a few days before I was completely consumed by you. You confused me, awed me, overwhelmed me, frustrated me to no end, but at the end of the day all I was sure of was that I couldn't live without you and that I needed to protect you at all costs, because I loved you, and I still do," Four said seriously, gently touching the side of her face with his hand.
"Oh," Tris said softly, overcome by his words, and the sudden realisation that she knew where the conversation was headed.
"I knew that I would at some point as this question, and I decided that today seemed like a good day, because on this day, two years ago, I realised I loved you, and nothing has been the same since. You changed my life, showed me the love I never thought I'd have, we've learned so much together, shared so many things, and I know that this is one more thing I want to, need to, share with you. Tris, will you marry me?" Four asked earnestly, putting his hand in his pocket and pulling out a black velvet case.
Tris looked completely stunned and overwhelmed.
Four looked at her seriously, and he would've been rather amused had he not been completely focused on getting an answer from her.
He flipped the case over, revealing a simple but elegant square princess diamond ring, set in white gold.
"Tris, will you marry me?" Four reiterated, carefully watching his girlfriend's face, trying to read any emotion she might display.
"Are you sure you want this?" Tris asked slowly. "I mean, we can just go on with the way things are, thing are good. We don't have to change just because it seems like the next step."
"Okay, right now, I'm just going to assume you're freaking out, I get that I surprised you, I had meant to, but let me just go back to what I said before. I love you, I want to marry you, and there's nothing that could make me not want to spend the rest of my life with you, and I want everyone else to know that. I want to make this commitment to you. If you love me, as I know you do, then there's nothing else to think about, right?" Four asked seriously, searching her face, hoping for a positive sign.
"You're right, as usual. I love you, more than anything, even Dauntless cake, I'm so sorry I freaked out. Of course I want to marry you," Tris said emotionally, cupping his face in her hands and kissing him lovingly.
She drew back, and Four took her left hand and placed the engagement ring on her finger.
"Let me guess, Marlene and Christina helped pick this out?" Tris asked with a laugh, looking at the bright and shiny object.
"Nope. I did it all by myself, with maybe a little direction from your mom," Four told her, pleased with himself.
"My mom knew you were proposing?" Tris asked with a squeal.
"Yeah, its kind of old fashioned, and I know I hardly see them, but I wanted to ask their permission," Four confessed. "Which worked kind of well, I didn't want Marlene and Christina to confuse me and make me pick some gaudy, ostentatious ring. Plus, surprising you would've been hard if they'd known, and now we get to surprise them with the news!"
"Well, you've certainly been thinking about all of this a lot," Tris said a grin. "You've had no one to talk to about it and now you can finally say everything you've been thinking, right?"
"Right," Four confirmed sheepishly.
"One question," Tris said quickly. "I get why you chose this date, and why you disguised it as a meeting, dinner and a movie would have been way to suspicious, but why Joshua's office? Why note a place with some emotional significance?"
"Well, I thought the pool might have given me away, and anyway, no plan is perfect," Four replied, giving her a kiss.
"No, it was perfect," Tris said softly. "I can't believe I spoiled it with my silliness."
"You didn't, I was sure of myself before I proposed, I'm glad you were sure of yourself before you accepted," Four replied. "And I'm glad you said what you were feeling and thinking. The minute we can't talk openly with each other anymore, and work through what's going, is the first sign of a relationship that is failing, and I don't want that for us, ever."
"I love you, so much," Tris said, kissing him again. "Now, do we have to go back work?"
"I'm afraid we actually do have to, you know how crazy recruit training time is," Four replied. "But, leave your ring on. I can't wait to see the reactions we get."
"To be honest, neither can I," Tris owned, and they shared an equally overjoyed grin.
They were not disappointed by the reactions they received, but they did have to wait until dinner until anyone said anything.
Tris was getting a forkful of salad, talking with Uriah over one of the new recruits when Christina suddenly let out a loud shriek.
"What is that?" Christina squealed.
The rest of the table stopped everything, their discussions and eating, and paused to look at Tris.
Four was doing his best to smother a proud grin.
"Looks like a ring to me," Zeke said, grinning. "What do you think Will?"
"I would agree, and a rather nice one at that," Will agreed, catching on quickly to Zeke's tone and therefore his unspoken plan. "Maybe that's why Chris screamed? It's very nice, very un-Tris to wear. She's probably just shocked."
"Definitely," Uriah concurred. "Great ring Tris. Now, back to Andy."
"No, don't be idiots!" Christina exclaimed. "That's an engagement ring."
Marlene, who had apparently temporarily lost the power of speech was just opening and closing her mouth, rather like a goldfish.
"Yes, it's an engagement ring," Tris confirmed, grinning. "It's a bit too nice to wear with my training gear, I know, but I don't really want to take it off."
"I think that's the whole point," Will calmly agreed.
"Marlene! Will you say something, they're being absolute idiots!" Christina wailed.
Marlene suddenly burst into tears, got up, moved a few seats down to Tris and wrapped her arms around her, blubbering and saying, "I'm so happy for you. Congratulations!"
Marlene's unexpected crying was all it took for Christina to well up too, and race around to hug her best friend.
Lynn's eyes were also surprisingly bright, and the guys all made a big show of slapping Four on the back and shaking his hand.
"You're getting married," Christina exclaimed.
"I'm getting married," Tris echoed happily, smiling so widely her cheeks her a little.
They were getting married.
November 2016
"Darling, it's so good to see you," Natalie said warmly, hugging her daughter as she stepped through the front door.
"I've missed you too, Mom," Tris replied, enjoying being in her mother's arms for a moment.
Natalie released her and turned to Four.
"It's so good to see you too, Four," she said, giving him a quick hug too.
"Thanks Natalie, I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be today," Four replied with a genuine grin. He really did enjoy the time he spent with Tris and her family. Over the years they had welcomed him, and had got to know one another, and he was a permanent addition to family events.
"Where are Dad and Caleb?" Tris asked with a nervous excitement, subconsciously playing with the ring on her finger, which was concealed by the gloves she was wearing to combat the cold weather.
"Watching the game," Natalie said with a grin. "They set the table and then sat down to watch the game."
"Of course," Tris said with a chuckle. "We should go say hi. Come with us? There's something we'd like to tell you all."
Natalie gave her an inquisitive look, a hopeful smile playing about her lips. She was fairly certain she knew what their news would be, and had been waiting to hear it ever since Four had sought their permission and asked for ring buying advice.
They headed into the family room where Caleb and Andrew were sitting, concentrating on the game.
"Andrew, Caleb, they're here," Natalie said brightly. "How about we turn the TV off for five minutes so we can all catch up?"
The TV was switched off, hugs and handshakes were exchanged, and then Tris and Four sat down together, and Natalie took a seat next to her husband.
Tris surreptitiously had taken her gloves off, but kept her left hand concealed in a pocket.
"Mom, Dad, Caleb, we got some good news to share," Tris began, trying not to smile too widely.
"You're moving back to the East Coast?" Andrew asked hopefully.
"Andrew, shush," Natalie admonished gently.
"I asked Tris to marry me, and she said yes," Four announced proudly, and Tris held up her hand to display her ring.
Natalie gave a happy exclamation and jumped up to hug her daughter, and then Four.
There were several rounds of hugs and handshakes, and then the TV went back on and they returned to the usual Thanksgiving activities.
After the meal they sat around together, drinking coffee and hot chocolate and chatting. Naturally, the talk fell to the wedding, and Four and Tris's plans for the future.
"You've been engaged for a couple of months and are only just telling us now?" Caleb asked incredulously.
"We wanted to share the news in person, and I couldn't just jump on a plane home at the beginning of my senior year, right after I'd visited during summer," Tris explained.
They had also needed to wait until the recruit training was finished for the year, as well as making their West Coast college/work story work.
"I'm glad you told us in person," Natalie said firmly, giving Caleb a mildly disapproving glare.
"And where is Susan today?" Tris asked Caleb.
Caleb had been dating their next door neighbour Susan on and off for a couple of years.
"With her family, I'd imagine," Caleb said shortly.
"So, you two are off again," Tris surmised pointedly.
Tris loved her brother, but found his superiority and focus on intellectualism could wear thin at times.
"So, Caleb, how are you enjoying Yale? Law School as hard as they say it is?" Four asked, trying to avoid Tris and Caleb bickering.
"Oh definitely, but I'm really enjoying it, it's a great challenge," Caleb said importantly. "How's are you enjoying your private investigating job?"
Part of Four's cover story was that he had completed a degree in Criminal Justice, and had gone into private investigating following graduation.
"It's interesting so far," Four said. "I can't go in to too much detail of course, but I'm glad I've gone down this path for the moment."
"Any chance once Tris graduates that you might move back to the East Coast?" Natalie asked hopefully. "I'm sure you'll be able to get work here, as will she."
"We're definitely not ruling it out," Tris said sincerely. "Maybe in a couple of years."
"And when are you thinking of getting married? And will it be here or there?" Andrew asked.
"In the summer, after I graduate," Tris answered. "We'd like to get married here. We both grew up here, you're here, we have friends here, and we'll probably end up back here, so it's what makes sense for us."
"Oh, we'll have to start planning right away!" Natalie exclaimed.
Tris laughed and looked uncomfortable. "I don't want too much fuss, Mom. You know me. I'll email you my ideas, and then you and Christina and Marlene can just take over. You remember Chris and Mar, right?"
June 2017, Faction, Pennsylvania
"Wake up, you're getting married!" Christina squealed, racing into Tris's room at her parents' house. "The hair dresser is here, there's so much to do, get up!"
Tris woke and became alert quickly, she had her training to thank for that.
"You're up before me, willingly and happily. I should get married more often if it makes you this happy," Tris said lightly. "Where's your partner in crime?"
"I'm here, you wench," Marlene announced. "And if you call us that again in reference to your beautifully planned wedding I will stab you."
"That way we will then be guilty of a crime, because we are not currently, this wedding is a masterpiece," Christina declared. "Now, put your 'bride' robe on and get downstairs. Your mom has made breakfast, make sure you thank her. She's some sort of saint, cooking for seven people when she's the mother of the bride."
Tris's face softened at this, her mother was always thoughtful that way. She'd put so much work into her wedding, making sure it would be special, and something that Tris could look back on fondly. Even if Tris would've been happy for a tiny wedding without fuss, her mom knew better, and Tris had respected that, and had thus cooperated, mostly.
Marlene, Christina and Lauren had stayed the night with Tris at her parents' house so that they could get ready for the wedding together. The cars would pick them up and take them the short distance to Moonstone Manor in Elizabethtown, the venue for Four and Tris's wedding. It was a beautiful estate, with exquisite structures, gardens and lawns, and it was just gorgeous in the early summer.
Tris had insisted that her gown be traditional, but not too fussy, comfortable, but not too casual, she didn't want it to be strapless, and she only wanted a small train. Marlene and Christina had set to work to find a suitable dress and after much painstaking searching and many rejected dresses, Tris had found a dress she really liked. It was a delicate ivory, with cap sleeves and a lace overlay, with a simple, elegant cut, and a very small train. She had a low pair of dainty heels, and her hair was to be in a low, soft bun, styled to work around her veil.
Tris had been worried that the morning would be an uncomfortable one, filled with silly frivolous occurrences, but it flew by. Hair and makeup were done, Andrew, Natalie, Tris and her bridesmaids dressed and the cars came to take them to the venue.
Christina was her maid of honour, Marlene and Lauren her bridesmaids. Lynn had not wanted to be a bridesmaid and would be coming with Shauna and the rest of the invited Dauntless agents who weren't in the bridal party. They had all been prepped on their cover stories in relation to roles in Four and Tris's lives, the detail involved had made it almost seem like a mission. Four and his best man – Zeke – and the groomsmen, Will and Uriah were heading from Dauntless to the venue.
When the car pulled up, and Tris had been helped out by her father, with Christina checking her train, Natalie came over, so that she and Andrew could have a last few words with their daughter before her wedding.
"Darling, we're so proud of you," Natalie said, her voice shaky with emotion.
"You're more beautiful that I could have ever imagined, and you're going to marry a man who is worthy of you. If he wasn't, I wouldn't feel good about giving you away," Andrew added.
Natalie kissed her daughter, and then was led away to her seat.
Tris and Andrew were assembled with the bridesmaids and prepared to walk down the aisle.
Lauren, then Marlene went, and the Christina. Tris took a deep breath and calm settled over her. She was ready to take this next step in her life with Four, and she actually couldn't wait.
As she took her first step down the aisle on her father's arm she looked up and her eyes met Four's and the love she saw and felt almost overwhelmed her. If she had had any doubts before his expression would have been more than enough to reassure her that marrying him was the right choice.
January 2018
"Hi Mom," Tris said brightly.
"Tris!" her mother exclaimed. "Any chance you can squeeze a visit soon? We miss you so much, especially because you couldn't make it over Christmas."
"Actually, I've got something even better than that," Tris said, a slow smile spreading across her face. "We're moving home, we've just bought a house about fifteen minutes from your house."
Natalie let out an uncharacteristic squeal, and then clapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes brimming with tears.
Andrew looked up from the paper he was reading to look inquisitively at his wife.
"They're moving home," Natalie told him excitedly.
Andrew didn't say much, not being a man of many words, but his eyes brightened and he wasn't able to stop a broad grin from appearing on his face.
"How soon?" Natalie asked her daughter eagerly.
"End of the month, Mom," Tris replied. "We've both given notice and are in the final stages of lining up work in Pennsylvania."
Tris and Four were of course not actually moving from the West Coast back to Faction, and they didn't have new jobs, but they had bought a house, and they were moving in to said house. They had decided that they wanted a home outside of the Dauntless compound, somewhere they could call their own and create a life apart from their work. As they grew older and their relationship developed they were realising the importance of putting down roots, and Tris especially wanted to have a chance to spend more time with her family. It was less important to be constantly in the Dauntless compound with their friends and their work than it was to have some balance.
The dynamic of the Faction compound was naturally changing a little as well, what with there being several years' worth of younger, new agents, many of whom lived in the compound. Several of Tris and Four's friends had started to make plans to move out, and they had felt it was a good next step for them. They had started looking for somewhere close to the compound and somewhere close to the Abnegation neighbourhood, and had advised Harrison of their intentions. Before long their plans began to become finalised and Tris finally was able to share the good news with her parents.
"A few years ago I couldn't have imagined moving out of the compound and into my own home, let alone being able to have some regular contact with my family," Tris said to Four, as they packed up their Dauntless quarters.
"I know," Four agreed. "But it's going to be great. Shauna and Zeke think they might've found a place too, and I'm sure the others will move out too over the next couple of years. It's just a new phase in our lives."
"I know, and I can't wait," Tris said softly. "I can't imagine it now, just like I couldn't imagine this before, but I suppose some day we'll find it's time to leave Dauntless. I can't even comprehend how we'd go about that."
"We'll take it one step at a time, just like everything else we've done," Four said reassuringly. "For now, we're moving into our house, and we're a completely normal, young, married couple, except that we're top secret agents."
"We'll be like Mr and Mrs Smith," Tris said with a giggle.
"Well, expect that we work for the same top secret organisation, and our friends know what we do, and no one is after us, yes," Four replied dryly. "Feel free to take on board the whole girl wearing the guy's clothes after sex though, that's hot."
"I wear your clothes all the time and you know it," Tris retorted cheekily.
"That you do, oh wife," Four said, grabbing her and kissing her.
"You two will never finish packing if you can't keep your hands to yourselves," Christina reprimanded fiendishly from the doorway.
"Ah, nothing gets by you, no wonder you're the most sought after profiler in Dauntless on the East Coast," Tris said with a grin. "Care to help with our packing efforts?"
"Only if tell me that the spare room really is mine," Christina teased.
"It's yours whenever you want to stay," Tris promised. "Our home will always be open to our friends, and family."
March 2022
Four entered his and Tris's home, opening the front door in happy contentment, dropping his suitcase in the foyer. He had been away for almost six weeks on a mission in South America.
Tris had not been assigned to the same mission, and had been based back at the compound and in the immediate area while he was gone, which had turned out to be a good thing as she had had a nasty stomach flu for a couple of weeks. She was in fact still trying to shake it.
"Tris?" Four called. It was a little after six and he had come straight from the aerodrome without even bothering to stop by the compound. He would go in first thing the next day, but it had been weeks since he'd seen his wife and Tris would most likely have already finished her day at Dauntless and be home.
"Tobias?" Tris exclaimed, jumping up.
She hurried out of the kitchen and into the foyer. She ran into his arms and said, "I didn't know you'd be back today!"
"Surprise," he said with a chuckle. "I missed you so much. You look pale."
"I'm just tired," Tris said easily. "I've been so busy with work, and the stomach flu has taken a lot out of me."
They sat down on the couch together, Tris curling into Four's side as she, at his insistence, told him about what she'd been doing while he was away.
He listened as she talked about Christina and Will's wedding plans, the new suite Marlene had bought for her and Uriah's house, and various social news of the compound and her family.
When she began to talk about work his mind began to wander. His heart wasn't invested in their work the way it use to be. The whole time he'd been away he had just wanted to be back with Tris in their home. The thrill of a new mission no longer excited him. He wanted to make a difference and do a job that mattered, but he was beginning to feel more and more strongly that he wanted to step back from Dauntless and find something else to use his skills on.
"Tobias, did you hear what I was saying? You look like you're a million miles away," Tris said softly.
"I'm sorry, I was just enjoying being home and holding you in my arms," Four said truthfully. "How about we head out and grab dinner somewhere?"
"Oh, that Thai place on 13th Street in Harrisburg?" Tris suggested. "I think I might have appetite enough for that."
"Thai it is," Four agreed. "I'll take a quick shower before we go, if you don't mind making a reservation?"
The reservation was made, Tris dressed and Four showered and changed, and then enjoyed a nice meal together, and Tris felt better than she had in days.
Back at the house however she found herself losing her dinner, vomiting everything she'd eaten, feeling weak and awful.
Four was very concerned.
"Have you been to the infirmary or had Mar check you over?" Four asked, worried.
"No, I just figured I'd shake this eventually," Tris said weakly. "Would you get me a glass of water?"
Four hurried off to get her water and Tris opened the cabinet and retrieved the bag from the drug store, with the item she'd bought, just in case she needed it.
Tris drank her water, and told Four to unpack while she took a shower.
But first she had to do something important.
She took a shower while she waited for the result. She'd only needed to kill a few minutes, but decided to enjoy the warmth of the shower. The result would be there and wouldn't change, regardless of the length of her shower.
With her towel wrapped around her she read the result. A small smile played on her lips, but then it disappeared at the thought of telling Four. She had no idea what his reaction would be.
A baby was nothing to be scared over. She had fought criminals, was a Dauntless agent, she was brave. She could tell her husband she was pregnant.
Resolutely she picked the pregnancy stick up and walked into their bedroom.
"Four," she said, his back to her as he sorted his gear from the trip.
He turned around quickly.
"How do you feel?" he asked, concern in his eyes.
"I think I'm going to be okay," she said slowly. "And I'm pretty sure I know what's wrong, well, not wrong, exactly."
He looked at her expectantly.
"I'm pregnant," she announced calmly, holding up the stick in evidence.
Four was silent and still for a moment, and then he quickly closed the space between them and crushed her in a hug.
"So you're happy?" she asked weakly. "We're going to have to make some big changes, and I didn't know how you'd feel about that."
"It's perfect, I couldn't be more ready, you have no idea," Four said sincerely, briefly revisiting his thoughts from earlier in the evening. "Dauntless was a huge part of our lives, and will always be part of who we are, but I think I'm ready to step away from that. To make a new life for us, and our child."
"Really?" Tris said emotionally.
"Really," Four said firmly. "And I can't wait."
"Neither can I," Tris agreed.
"Well, I guess we've got a lot of plans to make," Four said with a grin.
"I guess we do," Tris said with a gentle smile.
"I love you, Tris Eaton," Four said, kissing her tenderly.
"I love you, too, Tobias," she replied, resting her head against his chest.
No matter where else life took them they'd still be Dauntless, and most importantly, they would still love one another.
