AN: A couple of weeks ago I realised that I had left a part off the end of Epilogue 2-0, so I decided to turn it in to a one shot and update it to this work, as kind of a final farewell to this story. Before you get too excited this isn't a reboot of this fic, or me planning to start a sequel. It's just me closing the door one late time. Seriously, it is the end now, and it's also a big thank you to all of you who read, and those who are still coming across it and reading it. Also, it just hit 400 favourites, so this is also a little in celebration of that! Big thanks and love to you all x
BELATED NOTE: I added this chapter to update, and I uploaded Chapter 1 again and never noticed. I AM THE WORST. Hope you all enjoy this now :) (We're way over 400 favourites now by the way, thank you all!)
More Than Dauntless
September 2040
"Tris, honey, where are you?" Four called, pouring himself a cup of coffee in the kitchen.
"In the office!" Tris called. "Hang on."
Tris appeared, wearing a nicely cut black skirt suit and classic black heels, and placed the laptop she was holding on the kitchen bench.
"You look nice," Four said with a whistle, pulling her to him and giving her a slow kiss. "You couldn't possibly have a daughter who is starting her senior year today. My wife is hot."
Tris smiled fondly at him and cupped the left side of this face with one of her hands, running a thumb over his smooth, freshly shaved cheek. She did look good for her forty-five years. She and Four lived a fit and healthy lifestyle, which helped them to maintain their figures and looks, for Four also was in very good shape. Tris had more than once caught her daughter's friends checking him out.
"Where is our daughter? And our son for that matter?" she asked. "I've packed their lunches, and we need to leave in a couple of minutes. I swear we trained them better than this, they know how to be punctual."
"Well, true as that may be, they usually are running late on the first day of school," Four pointed out with a grin. "I'd say someone is carefully applying a coat of lipgloss to her lips, and someone else is saying a choked farewell to their Playstation."
Tris rolled her eyes, walked to the edge of the kitchen and called in the direction of the stairs, "Piper! Nathan! We are leaving in 3 minutes! If you're not in the car then you can both walk to school."
"Yes Mom," two voices called quickly, one feminine, the other a recently broken masculine one.
"You do know that Piper can just drive them both if you leave without them," Four pointed out. "In fact, remind me why you're driving them."
"Because it's Piper's last first day of school, and it's Nathan's first day of high school," Tris explained. "It's not like it's going to make me that late for work, and besides, my boss likes me a lot, you know."
"That must be because you're a very hard worker," Four said seriously.
"No, he just likes me for me body," Tris said serenely. "See you at the office, darling. Piper, Nathan, I am going to the car right now!"
Tris picked up her laptop, then her purse and briefcase and walked out to the garage, unlocking and getting into her black Mercedes, and started the engine.
Just as the electric garage door was opening a girl in her late teens, followed by a teenage boy who looked a few years younger. Piper, who would be 18 in November, looked a lot like her mother, with long blonde hair and a slim figure. She was a little taller than Tris, but only enough to be considered of average height, compared with her petite mother. Nathan, was two and a half years younger than Piper, having turned 14 in February. He looked like his father, but he also looked a little like his grandfather, Andrew. Tris's parents loved their grandchildren, taking delight in their lives and accomplishments, but particularly enjoying that Piper's middle name was Natalie, and that Nathan resembled his grandfather.
"Nice to see you two this morning," Tris said to her children teasingly.
"Well, you got dressed while we ate breakfast, and we were getting dressed while you ate breakfast," Nathan pointed out.
"And Nathan had to make sure his hair was gelled just right so that he looks as cool as possible," Piper added bitingly.
Tris smothered a grin, amused that her daughter had decided to throw the first verbal punch in that battle.
"Seriously Piper, you spend 5 minutes per eyelash applying your mascara, let alone the rest of your makeup," Nathan retorted predictably. "Not to mention the time you take in the shower, and then blow drying and doing your hair."
"Okay my charming children," Tris interceded. "Are you both looking forward to today?"
"Yeah," they both eloquently said together.
"Do you both promise you'll have more to say tonight when we ask you about today?" Tris asked. "Your father and I know how to make you talk."
"We know you and Dad have mad interrogation skills, there's no need to threaten us, we'll talk," Nathan grumbled.
"We're just a bit preoccupied, Mom," Piper said a little contritely, her tone more gentle. "I'm kind of missing my sleep in right now."
"There's the girl I raised," Tris said, throwing her daughter a smile.
She pulled up out the front of the school then and Piper and Nathan both reached for the door and started to pile out.
"Have a good day you two, love you both! Say hi to Abby, Aaron, Tommy, Charlie and Ned for me," Tris said to their retreating figures, earning her a wave and grin from each of them.
Abby, or Abigail and Aaron were Marlene and Uriah's twins, and were starting their freshman year along with Nathan. Tommy, or Tom as he preferred, was Shauna and Zeke's eldest son. Charlie (Charlotte) and Ned were Will and Christina's kids, and were a junior and sophomore respectively. Tris and Four were still very close with their friends from Dauntless, although most of them had left the organisation when they had decided to start families. Only Lauren and Lynn were still working for Dauntless, and only Lynn was still single, with Lauren and Harrison having been together for many years.
They were all still living in the neighbourhoods they had grown up in, in Faction. Will and Christina only lived around the corner from Four and Tris, with the others not far away as well. Will was working as an engineer for an important company, thanks to his training in his role at Dauntless. Christina was working as a physcologist thanks to her training in profiling. Marlene had naturally continued her work in medicine, just in a more low key enviroment, if you could call the ER of the local hospital low key. Tris, Four, Zeke and Uriah had not strayed far from their Dauntless line of work, having started a private investigating firm together, with Shauna overseeing the running of their offices. None of them had been willing to completely part from the field they excelled in, and had settled for quieter lives of private investigators in the suburbs, their cases mainly consisting of corporate espionage and in depth background checks.
Tris drove straight from the school to their offices, which were only about 10 minutes from the school and their neighbourhood.
Tris walked inside, her eyes sweeping over the business name, 'Eaton and Pedrad', and then resting on Shauna sitting at the front desk, who was apparently very focused on reading something, and grinned to herself and walked over.
"Excuse me, I'm here for an 11.30 meeting with Harrison Thompson," Tris said. "I'm Beatrice Prior."
Shauna looked up and laughed.
"I remember that day, I remember thinking you were such an earnest looking little thing, but I doubted that you'd make the cut and survive training," Shauna said with a remniscent smile. "How far we've all come, and how much we've been through."
"I wouldn't change any of it," Tris said with a grin. "I'll see you a bit later. Is my husband in his office?"
"Sure, he got here about ten minutes ago," Shauna answered, and Tris headed off to her own office with a last smile at Shauna.
The day passed quickly, as it usually did, with Tris working on various cases she and her fellow investigators were currently invovled with. It was a pleasant, if not ideal, working environment, what with them all being very highly trained in their chosen field, and trained by the same organisation no less. They all liked each other and were goodfriends who had worked together for years as well, and this combination of factors had quickly made them one of the most sought after private investigating firms in the area.
Just after 4 p.m. Tris went into Four's office to let him know she was going to leave early for the day, so that she could get home to the kids to see them and make something decent for dinner after the first day of school.
"Honey, I'm going to head home now," Tris said, standing in the doorway.
"Not without giving me a goodbye kiss you're not," Four said with a rougish grin, putting down the file he was reading.
"I'm sorry, but I don't think that fits in with my schedule," Tris said with a sad shake of her head, her eyes dancing. However she walked slowly towards her husbands desk, a small smile playing on her lips.
Four got out of his chair and walked quickly to where she stood, grabbing her and kissing her thoroughly.
"Do you really have to go now?" he asked in a low, gravely voice. "You could stay here and I could have my way with you."
Tris gave a little sigh and said breathily, "Tobias, don't be a tease. You know this is important." When they had had children, Four and Tris decided that their children would always feel as though their parents valued them above their jobs, and Tris and Four consistently made an effort to maintain this throughout their lives, which included Tris leaving work early when necessary to provide a loving home environment for their children.
"And our sex life isn't?" he retorted naughtily. "They say the key to maintaining a strong, loving marriage is a lot of sex."
"No, I think they say the key to keeping a man happy is a lot of sex," Tris retorted pertly. "Now, I really don't have time now, but I think I'm free tonight."
"The kids should feel so lucky that we soundproofed our bedroom, they would be so grateful for our Dauntless connections, if they knew about them," Four said with a chuckle. "Fine, I'll see you at home a bit later. And in all seriousness, I love your commitment to providing what we believe is important for Piper and Nathan."
"Thank you," Tris said softly. "Would you pick up a chocolate cake from the place on your way home? It is tradition after all."
Four agreed and Tris left and drove the short distance home. The reference to the chocolate cake was of course in relation to the famous Dauntless chocolate cake, which Four and Tris continued to make an important part of their lives once they had children. Piper and Nathan of course did not know that the love of the cake stemmed back to their parents lives as secret agents, as they could not be told about Dauntless. Tris and Four did however instill in them a love of very good chocolate cake, which was enjoyed on special occassions, and pretty much whenever Tris or Four stopped by their favourite cake shop and picked up one.
When Tris arrived home she found the front door open and Piper and Nathan at the kitchen bench, Piper drinking a glass of juice with a banana next to her on the bench. Nathan had several cookies on a plate, an apple, and a peanut butter sandwich.
"Comfort eating, or did you work up an appetite today?" Tris asked with a smile, ruffling her son's thick brown hair.
"Hi Mom," Nathan mumbled through his mouthful.
"Hi Mom," Piper echoed, smothering a giggle. "I've already quizzed him over his food consumption. He says it's just because he's a growing boy. I did mention he didn't eat like that all summer."
Nathan gulped down his mouthful to add, "To which I told her that I had access to food all day during summer. I was woefully deprived of food today."
"So how was your day, besides almost starving?" Tris asked, pouring herself a glass of juice too. "What's the news on teachers, classes, friends and extracurriculars?"
Nathan and Piper began to talk animatedly about their respective days and Tris began to prepare dinner while they talked. Once Nathan and Piper had finished their recounts they both left Tris to preparing dinner while they started on their homework.
When Four walked in the door just before half past five he could smell garlic bread, and possibly lasagne and he smiled in appreciation.
He walked into the empty kitchen and set a chocolate cake on the bench, and dropped his work things in the office before looking for his absent family.
He found Tris on the lounge, a glass of wine in her hand as she watched TV. She had pulled her hair up into a messy ponytail and kicked off her shoes and was still wearing the apron she had put on to make dinner.
Four walked over and sat next to her on the couch.
"You look barely older than the day I first saw you," he said softly, kissing her cheek.
"Well, for starters, that ankle I broke in Peru doesn't feel that young," Tris joked.
"So, did Piper and Nathan enjoy themselves today?" Four asked. "Or should I expect a case of the sulks from anyone?"
"No, they're good, we raised good kids," Tris said.
"Yeah, we did," Four agreed. "I couldn't have asked for anyone better than you to do this with."
"You might not say that when you hear that our daughter is thinking of trying out for the cheer squad this year," Tris said mischeviously. "Though, to be fair, I think Charlie practically blackmailed her into it, but I guess it was always a possibility seeing as she's a gymnast."
"So long as I don't have to watch her dance suggestively with any guys I will be fine," Four said.
"Hear, hear," Tris replied. "I would hate to only get to see you in prison because you killed some boy for dancing with your daughter."
"Don't be stupid, if I was going to kill someone you know I wouldn't get caught," Four retorted with a chuckle. "Now, anything I can do to help with dinner?"
Their evening together was a pleasant one, with Piper and Nathan enjoying sharing about their days with their father over spaghetti, and then cake. After dinner they all settled down to watch TV together for a little while, before heading off to get ready for the next day.
Four stuck his head into Piper's room just before he went to his own room to say goodnight.
"Goodnight sweetheart," he said, interrupting her reading.
"Goodnight Daddy," Piper replied. "I love you."
"I love you too," he replied gently.
"Thanks for everything," she said suddenly. "You know, for all you do. I know some kids don't have nearly as much as we do, and I'm really grateful, for everything."
"You're very welcome," Four said, his voice a little unsteady. "Sleep well."
Four bid Nathan goodnight too, then headed to the room he shared with Tris, closed the door, and got into bed beside her.
"Are you okay?" Tris asked, looking at his face. "You look a little funny."
"Just something Piper said," Four said quietly. "Thirty years ago I never would have guessed that we could have a life like this. If someone had told me this is where I'd be now I wouldn't have believed them. I'm so glad we found each other, and that we fought for what we wanted. We've taught our children to work hard, to enjoy life, to strive for what they want, and to love. I couldn't ask for anything more."
"I have everything I never knew I wanted," Tris agreed, squeezing his hand gently. "And you have everything you deserved. Our lives, our children, our relationship are a product of us, and it's all because of who you are."
"All because of who we are, I wouldn't be me without you," Four said, kissing her gently.
"I love you," Tris said quietly, their lips barely half an inch apart.
"I love you too," Four replied, before kissing her again. "Now, I seem to remember something about taking advantage of our soundproofed bedroom."
The End
