Sorry this took so long to update!
We don't own Ghost Hunt!
Naru finished his tea and stood up from the chair. Mai started panicking even more. She tried to think of something to say but nothing would come out.
After he walked out of the kitchen going who knows where, Mai buried her head in her hands and made a frustrated sound in the back of her throat. Naru on the other hand was hoping to sneak back to the sofa and sleep in an effort to regain some of the rest his brother had stolen from him. Seriously though, what right did Gene have doing that?! He should keep his ghostie eyes to himself...and his opinions!
Naru began feeling even more annoyed because he couldn't help but think of Gene saying Mai had been 'embarrassed' and 'uncomfortable.' It wasn't true, it couldn't be. Mai would've said something if it were...right? Although she does keep some things to herself...but she would've said something about that surely.
Naru sighed exasperatedly. Why does Gene care anyways?! Unless he returns Mai's feelings for him...but he can't, not unless he wants to endanger Mai's spirit. Naru shook his head again. 'I don't love Mai.' He thought firmly. '...Right?' He tried to rid himself of the thought. 'Of course I don't, why should I when she cares for my brother?' He tried to ignore the slight tightening of his chest. He also tried to ignore the slight prick of tears in his eyes.
"Naru we need-" Mai called as she walked into the living room but stopped when she saw Naru. He looked like he was torn between crying and punching something. "N-Naru? Are you okay?!" She asked worriedly. He blinked and looked up at her. He saw her shocked expression. He didn't know what to do. Mai stepped closer to him. He frowned. "Are you okay?" She repeated. Naru just blinked at her again. Mai bit her lip not knowing what to do. 'He's not answering...'
"I am fine, Mai." He said after a minute. Mai nodded slowly, looking at Naru incredulously. "What's the look for?"
"Sorry, it's just...You looked like you were really upset." Mai said a little hesitantly. Naru frowned slightly again. "Um...Are you ready to go?" She continued.
"Go? Go where?"
"We're supposed to go to the office...Naru are you sure you're alright?" Mai inquired concernedly.
"I'm not going." Naru stated.
Mai's eyes looked like they were going to pop out of their sockets. She walked over to Naru and placed a hand on his forehead, checking his temperature. "No fever..." She mused. "Are you sure you're Naru and you didn't switch bodies with someone else?!"
"Mai, I have been up all night and didn't sleep. Do not joke with me." He growled.
Mai jerked her hand away from him. "Sorry, but I don't think I've ever seen a day where you're not at the office!" She told him. "I knew I should've changed the sheets last night; you would've slept better!"
"That is not the reason I didn't sleep."
Mai paused and bit her lip. "...Was it because of Gene?" She asked softly. She was afraid Naru would send her an icy glare and shout at her. To her surprise he just sighed and nodded. She sat down beside him. "Can you tell me why you're so upset with Gene?" She asked in the same tone of voice.
"I'd rather not." Naru replied. Mai frowned and sighed.
"Well, when you are ready to tell me..." She left the end of her sentence open to whatever Naru wanted to put in. But Naru stayed silent. He didn't even nod to indicate he'd heard what she said. 'Is he even listening to me?!' Naru's eyes were starting to flutter closed. Mai sighed as she realized he was falling back asleep. She gently guided him into lying down and then draped a blanket over him. She knew what it felt like getting hardly any sleep—so she let him be. She guessed she would just have to call Lin and inform him they wouldn't be coming in today.
She picked up the phone ready to ring the office. But she paused as she wondered what she should tell Lin. Should she say someone was sick? If so, who? She couldn't say Mai was sick because it'd just be a very un-like Naru thing to say he was staying with her to make sure she was okay. Although Lin knew that 'Mai' was sick last night... Maybe she should just say that and hang the consequences of damaging Naru's reputation. Naru would probably kill her though. Or maybe she could say that she just still felt tired from being in the hospital? That might work. Mai nodded to herself and dialled Lin's number. The line rang a few times before he picked up.
"Hello?" He answered scruffily.
"Ah, Lin." Mai replied.
"Naru? What is it?"
"We won't be coming in today, Mai is sick." Mai announced. She thought she heard a small chuckle. She then heard Lin clear his throat. 'Was he laughing that I was sick?!'
"So you're going to watch after her?"
"Yes." She answered.
"Good. I'm glad I finally got you to understand the other day..." Lin hinted.
"Understand what?"
Lin smirked. "You know, about Mai." If Naru's too dense to admit he loves her, then who is Lin not to give Mai some hints?
"Uh...right...yeah...Mai." She stuttered. 'Again he's bringing up this conversation...' She really wanted to know what it was all about. Mai peeked at Naru who was still sleeping on the couch. Maybe she could finally find out what Lin and Naru were talking about since Naru's not awake. "Remind me again what we talked about." She said tactfully.
"What? Naru, you couldn't have forgotten."
"Forgotten what?"
"About what we talked about concerning Mai." Lin's smirk grew wider. "Are you sure you're okay?"
"I'm fine. What did we say about Mai?" Lin paused, debating if he should tell Mai or not. He decided it would be within Naru's best interests if he stayed quiet on the matter and let him come to his own conclusions.
"Never mind, you should remember. If you don't then you're a bigger idiot than I thought."
"Excuse me?!" Mai immediately covered her mouth, realizing she made Naru's voice go a little higher than normal.
"You heard me." Lin said, trying to hide his amusement.
"Yeah, I heard you call me an idiot!" Mai responded.
"It's true."
"No, it's not."
"You may not be with a lot of things Naru, but you are when it comes to emotions and feelings." Lin answered.
"I can have emotions." Mai protested, completely forgetting she wasn't Naru in the first place and she often thinks the same thing of Naru.
"Then why don't you use them?"
"Maybe because I don't want to." Mai replied hotly. Lin just sighed. Mai sighed too.
"If you don't...you're never going to get anywhere." Lin thought that reply could go to both Naru and Mai. Then again maybe Mai shows a bit too much emotion sometimes. She certainly was loud when she wanted to be. Naru on the other hand needed the stick shoved up his butt removing to let some of the emotions out. Really, they were very much the opposite of each other. Maybe that was why the spell worked. They needed to see things from a different perspective. 'Now they just need to tell each other that they love them.' Like that would happen though.
"Look, I only called to tell you Mai and I won't be coming into work today not to be insulted!" Lin tried his best not to laugh but a chuckle escaped his lips which caused Mai to narrow her eyes in anger. "Don't laugh at me!" She fumed. "I'm hanging up now!" The next thing Lin heard was the dial tone indicating she had indeed hung up. He shook his head.
"Those two will probably never learn." He muttered to himself as he replaced the phone. "But if they don't they'll be stuck like that forever..." He shrugged at the thought. "Serves them right."
Mai huffed as she glared at the phone. How dare Lin call her...no Naru...no...she didn't know who exactly but someone an idiot. If someone was the idiot, it was Lin! Yeah, Lin was the idiot! She nodded in satisfaction at her conclusion. 'Now...what to do...'
A loud snore issued from the couch where Naru lay. Mai twirled around to look at Naru. He lay there, peacefully sleeping. Mai still wondered what Gene had said to him. Naru wouldn't tell her even if she paid him though. She sighed. If only she still had her dreams then she could've contacted Gene and asked him. He would've at least told her why he wouldn't say anything if he didn't want to. She wished there was some way to get to Gene...short of killing herself she couldn't see any ways to do it though. Mai sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. Naru let out another snore.
Mai glared over in his direction. "That better be him snoring and not me." She grumbled. "I don't think I snore though." Another snore. Mai paused. "Right?"
Naru started to roll over only for Mai to realize that if he did that he'd roll right off the sofa. Her eyes widened and she dashed over there. She managed to stretch out her arms just in time for Naru to roll into them then she gently placed him back on the sofa. She sighed in relief and stared at Naru for a few moments. 'The couch can't be all that comfortable...' Maybe she should make the bed for him or something.
She was just contemplating this further when Naru grabbed her arm in his sleep. She gasped slightly as he kept trying to pull her down. She didn't know whether to pull away or not. It's not like she really wanted to or anything...plus if she moved he might wake up. She didn't want that, he was already grumpy enough. But what if he woke up while he was still hanging on to her—again? That would be even more awkward. Last time she had the excuse of her being there in case he needed her. What exactly could she say this time? Well, technically it was his fault this time. He grabbed her wrist, last night she chose to get in the bed with him.
She tried to debate what to do when he started tugging a bit harder on her wrist almost causing her to lose her balance and fall on him. Mai bit her lip and tried to steady herself, planting her feet on the ground. Naru suddenly stopped tugging causing her to stumble backwards a little. He yawned then settled himself again. Mai sighed in relief. Then she sneezed. Loudly. Which caused Naru to jerk from being startled.
"Wha...Mai, what's going on?" He asked sleepily.
"Ahh...ah, n-nothing...just go back to sleep." Mai said soothingly, hoping he wouldn't noticed he was still holding her arm. Naru just grunted and closed his eyes again. Mai smiled lightly. But now she has to wait until he's completely back asleep before she can move. 'How long is that going to take?' She wondered. She leaned over him to get a better look at his face. Just as she did so he started tugging on her arm in his sleep again and this time she did fall on him. Which, in return, woke up Naru again. Only it was worse this time.
"MAI, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!" He yelled.
"S-sorry! I'm sorry!" Mai kept repeating frantically.
"It's no good saying sorry." Naru replied angrily.
"Then what am I supposed to do?! In case you didn't know, you were the one who pulled me! I didn't willingly jump on you!" Mai snapped defensively. He didn't have to be so angry…
"There's no way in hell I would do that." Naru denied.
"Well you did! You were asleep just like last night when you started hugging me!"
"I seriously doubt I did that as well."
"You. Did!" Mai huffed and began to get off Naru when she realized she was still on him. Naru shook his head. Mai nodded vehemently. "You know you did, you Jerk! You were like wrapped all around me last night and just now you grabbed my arm and wouldn't let go!" Naru still shook his head. Mai's eye slowly started to twitch in irritation. Naru crossed his arms. "You just don't want to admit it." Mai grumbled to herself as she completely got off the couch and started to walk away.
"Admit what? There's nothing to admit."
Mai turned around. "Yes there is!"
"No there isn't."
"There is! You were asleep and you did it! Why is that so hard for you to acknowledge?!" She flushed slightly. Mai didn't want him to think that she was some weird person who kept clinging to him every time he slept.
"And yet you are the one who is blushing thus proving that I did not do that." Naru argued.
"I-I'm not blushing! Besides you're the one who was hanging onto me not the other way around!"
"I seriously doubt I was hanging on to you, I think it was the other way around." Naru asserted.
Mai growled in frustration. "It was not! Especially last night! You were practically on top of me! You wouldn't let go no matter what I did! I'm still not thoroughly convinced that you were asleep and not purposely doing it especially since you said my name!" She gasped slightly and covered her mouth. She didn't mean to say that last part...
Naru looked at her in shock. Mai's blush got redder. 'Okay...maybe he was asleep after all with that shocked face...'
