We don't own Ghost Hunt!
She was sitting down with her head in her hands. Naru sat down next to her.
"I'm sorry." Mai spoke before he got a chance.
"What are you sorry for?" Naru asked.
"Those last several minutes back there..." Mai replied nodding towards the kitchen.
Naru shook his head. "There's nothing to be sorry for."
"I broke my teacup and for some weird reason I started crying over it, which I have no idea why, then you had to clean up the mess I made... I think that deserves an apology."
"I didn't have to, I volunteered to. You don't have to apologize for anything." Naru insisted. Mai stayed silent. Naru gave her a smile and put a hand on top of hers. The distressed girl in a male body glanced up at him. Naru's smile widened. She felt her own lips start to turn upwards.
"There you go. See? Everything's okay." Naru said as a full smile bloomed on Mai's face. Mai closed her eyes and nodded. "I think you should have a rest for a few hours Mai. Relax a little."
Mai cracked an eye open. "You're telling me to relax?" She questioned teasingly. "That's a turn around."
"I was trying to be nice. You don't have to be sarcastic." Naru muttered. Mai bit her lip to try and stop her smile from widening.
"Sorry, sorry." Naru frowned at her. "Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry..."
"Mai." Naru interrupted, growing irritated. Mai blinked at him before she recognized his tone of voice.
"Sor-"
"Don't say it again." Naru said as he quickly covered Mai's mouth with his hand before she could finish the word. She childishly stuck her tongue out and licked his hand. "Ah, Mai!" Naru yelled, wiping his hand on his clothes in disgust. Mai just chuckled at his reaction. In return Naru sent Mai a small glare. She just grinned at him. "Was that really necessary?"
"Yes, you were covering my mouth."
"Only because you wouldn't stop saying 'sorry'." Naru replied wiping his hand one more time.
"Well I only did that because you said I didn't have to and it wound you up." Mai responded.
Naru gave a small, mocking smile. "Because you kept repeating it so many times."
"Only because it was fun to see the look on your face." Naru gave her a look that said 'how childish are you?' Mai just smirked at him. He narrowed his eyes and shook his head. That just made Mai laugh.
Naru sighed. "I guess it can't helped." He mumbled.
"What can't be helped?" Mai asked.
"You." Naru said teasingly.
"What about me?"
"Nothing can be helped with you and your childish ways." Naru simply stated.
"I am not childish!" Mai cried out indignantly.
"Mai, you just licked my hand." Naru declared giving her a steady gaze.
"Yeah because you were covering my mouth." As he tried not to give into the urge to roll his eyes, Naru just stared at her with a blank look. "Well it's true!" Mai defended.
Naru sighed silently this time, wondering if he should waste his breath on this or not. "And as I've stated before it was only because you kept apologizing."
Mai let out a frustrated noise. "We're just going in circles here."
Naru gave a nod. "And now we're on the same page here."
Mai sighed. "We really do argue all the time, don't we?" She asked. Naru nodded again ruefully. Mai placed her fingertips on her head and tapped it against them in frustration. "We can't go on like this." She stated.
"Yes." Naru agreed.
"I don't know what to do though." Mai admitted. How were they supposed to fix this? If they didn't and just started dating then they would undoubtedly break up and make up all the time. She just couldn't face that. 'What do we do...?' Tears were starting to spring to her eyes again at the thought of losing Naru because they kept arguing. She didn't want that, especially now that she knew he loved her too. She didn't want to keep breaking up and making up with him either.
"We have to do something!" Mai blurted, her voice almost cracking. Naru reached out and took one of her hands in his, knowing she needed the comfort. Mai looked down at their joined hands and then intertwined their fingers. Naru smiled at her and squeezed her hand slightly. Mai smiled back widely at him. Maybe they can do it. They just have to be more careful not to get into anymore arguments. Or if they get into an argument they need to find a way to resolve it without going too far in hurting each other. They just need to be more considerate.
Mai felt her heart lighten at this thought. Yeah, that's it. Her smile widened.
"Mai?" Naru questioned as he noticed her mind wandering off somewhere.
"Yes Naru?" Mai replied dreamily.
Naru cocked a brow at Mai's tone of voice. "Mai?" He tried again.
"Yes Naru, I'll marry you." She said in a tone that showed she was miles away in her own little world.
Naru's eyes widened considerably as he stared warily at Mai. "What?" He choked out. Mai just continued to smile a goofy smile. He tried to carefully pull his hand away from hers so he could get her attention better, but Mai had a vice grip on his hand. He started to panic.
"M...Mai?" He asked hesitantly, afraid that if he said her name again then she'd say something else like she had been. Mai blinked a little. She had faintly heard Naru calling her name. She let out a sigh. Her fantasy was over now. She blinked away her daydream to find Naru with a very worried look on his face.
"Oh...Naru, what's wrong?" She inquired, oblivious to her previous words she had spoken. He blinked at her. Mai gave him an innocent, questioning look. Naru just sighed and shook his head with a smile.
"It's nothing." He proclaimed lightly. Mai cocked an eyebrow at him.
"...Why do I feel like I should be really embarrassed right now?" Mai asked puzzled after a few moments. Naru just shook his head again whilst trying to prevent himself from laughing. "What did I do?!" Mai practically shouted when she noticed Naru. Naru wasn't sure he should tell her what she said. "Oh my god... What did I say?" She whispered in worry as she lifted her hand to her mouth. Naru bit his lip. She really would be embarrassed if he told her. He decided to brave it and tell her anyway.
"You..." Mai looked at Naru when she heard his voice start to speak again. "Yes, you said something..." Naru stated as he tried not to smile.
"What did I say?" Mai asked. "It's bad isn't it?! Oh God, what is it? Tell me." She babbled. "No don't tell me... No tell me...no...don't. What did I say?" Naru had to let out a chuckle. Her unsure attitude was hilarious. "Naru..." She whined. "Tell me what I said."
"You said my name at first..."
"A-And?"
"Well, I tried calling your name again to get you to stop daydreaming and then..."
"And then what?!" Mai asked worriedly.
"You told me that..." Naru paused on purpose, enjoying Mai's anxious expression.
She swatted his arm. "Naru, just tell me!"
"You said—and I quote—'Yes Naru, I'll marry you'." He said, mocking her voice.
Mai's eyes widened. "I didn't."
Naru gave a small teasing smile. "Oh, but you did."
"Noooo..." Mai moaned before hiding her face in her hands. "I can't believe I said that!" Naru tried not to laugh. He knew her reaction would be funny. He just didn't realize how funny though as her face and ears had gone bright red which, seeing as it was his body, made her look really strange. Now that he thought about it, it was also kind of strange seeing himself smiling all the time and crying also. He wasn't sure if it was a good or a bad strange though. Well, truth be told, he wasn't sure whether their whole situation was good or bad either. It hadn't been a walk in the park that was for sure. But...he guessed something good did turn out from this. The fact that he had finally sorted through his feelings for Mai pleased him greatly. And him finding out that she loved him instead of Gene was even better. That made him feel like doing a happy dance, if it didn't make him look stupid of course.
Mai peeked at Naru through her fingers. He was staring off into the distance with a weird smile on his face. 'Now who's off in their own little world, Naru?' Mai thought. She couldn't decide what would be the best approach. She really wanted to do something jokey like tickle him but then again he'd probably yell at her for it. Then she thought about what Naru just said a few minutes ago. He said he tried calling her name but she began to say things she didn't even know she said, right? Maybe he would do the same...
She grinned to herself before calling his name. "Naru~!" There was no response. She wasn't sure whether to be happy that he didn't snap out of his thoughts or sad that he didn't say anything that would provide amusement. She decided to try again. "Naru!" She called. She was going to poke him but decided against it in case he came back to reality. She decided to call his name a third time.
"Naru!" She said softly.
"Mai...loves me and not Gene." Naru whispered happily with a smile on his face. Mai couldn't help but smile also at what Naru had said. He really did have his mind set on her loving Gene before a little while ago didn't he? It seemed crazy to her how he could make such a mistake. But at least he knows now. That made her smile widen. She'll do everything she can to keep him believing it too. Sure she'll still yell at him when he's a complete jerk but he starts it and she somehow gets the feeling he enjoys her fighting him anyway. Although sometimes he does go too far. He can say some really mean and hurtful things when he does that. But hopefully he might not do that anymore. Hopefully he'd think about what he was saying before saying it.
Mai glanced back over at Naru. He was still staring off into space wrapped up in his own thoughts. She wondered where they were gonna go from now. She hoped they'd manage to switch themselves back, learn from it and move forward with their relationship but then again these things could be unpredictable she supposed. She did at least want herself and Naru to be in a relationship although Naru might not want that. She could only hope he did. But he did say that they should resolve their arguing before they went any further...
She let out a sigh. He was right. As always.
Naru blinked when he heard Mai sigh and he snapped out of his thoughts.
"Mai? Is everything alright?" He asked. 'He heard me sigh but not when I was calling his name?!' Mai shook her head at the ridiculousness of it. "What's wrong then?" Naru questioned again seeing her shake her head.
"Huh? What? No, that isn't why I was shaking my head." Mai said.
"What was the reason then?"
"I was just thinking about something." She stated evasively. Naru just decided to leave it at that. It was highly possible that him asking her more questions would lead to another argument somehow. He definitely didn't want that as they were trying to keep from arguing not argue some more. Mai blinked in surprise. She was fully expecting Naru to question her further. He never settles with a vague answer like the one she just gave him. She frowned in puzzlement.
"Mai..." Naru said after a bit.
"What is it Naru?" Mai asked.
"...Will you move back to my apartment?" He asked hesitantly, afraid of what she'd say.
"Why?" She questioned. 'Why...?' Naru thought to himself. 'Surely the reason is obvious.' Mai stared at him expectantly waiting for an answer. Naru sighed before answering.
"Because...I want you there with me..." He admitted.
"But what if I want to stay here because I don't feel comfortable at your place?" Mai asked. Naru slightly lifted his brow. She didn't seem that way for the last few days. That girl was so confusing to him sometimes or was she just being difficult because she could? Or could she be testing him to see if he'll start another argument? He decided not to rise to her bait of starting an argument.
"Then I would stay here with you." Naru replied.
"R-Really?" Mai asked in awe. Naru nodded. He actually found Mai's apartment quite homely so he wouldn't really be bothered if he did have to stay there. The only problem is that they told everyone they were staying at Naru's. That could pose a problem. If they found out they were now at Mai's, then everyone would know that they had been lying to them. Although they hadn't necessarily been lying, they had simply changed their mind as to where they were staying. But they said Mai's apartment had 'firebugs', that was the only reason Naru said Mai was staying with him until her place was cleared. He decided to tell Mai this.
"Oh..." Mai said remembering. "I did forget about that..."
"Yeah. Looks like we have no choice." Naru stated awkwardly. Mai sighed. She went to get up when Naru put a hand on her arm.
"Mai?" Naru asked, his tone was a mixture of confusion and worry.
"I'm going to get my stuff so we can go." She said.
"Oh... Okay." Naru said as he removed his hand from her arm. Mai then disappeared off to her bedroom. She got some more clothes for Naru and also got a few of her things to carry with her. Then she went back to the living room where Naru was still sat on the sofa.
"Okay, I'm ready whenever you are."
"I was thinking we could have another cup of tea first." Naru replied innocently. Mai rolled her eyes as she made her way to the kitchen.
"Of course he wants more tea before we go." She muttered to herself. "Couldn't we just get it at his place though?" She let out a sigh as she switched the kettle on and waited for it to boil. Isn't this like the third time she's made tea since Naru's been here? 'Tea-addict.' She thought.
The kettle finally boiled. She made the tea quickly and carried it through to Naru.
"Here." She said as she gave it to him. Naru gave her a grateful smile as he accepted his drink. Mai sat back down beside him. "I don't see why we couldn't have gotten tea when we got back to yours." She grumbled.
"You have different tea than I do." Naru simply replied before he took a sip.
"How is my tea different and why couldn't you have just asked that I bring it with me?" Mai asked. Naru looked up and blinked as if it just now occurred to him.
"I didn't think of that." He said lamely as he stared at his tea. Mai had to turn her head so Naru wouldn't see her smile amusedly.
"I will make sure to pack my tea before we leave." She finally told him after she'd gotten herself back under control so a smile wouldn't be present in her voice. Naru nodded in satisfaction and finished draining his cup of tea.
"Right, let's go then!" He announced as he stood.
"Well that was fast..." Mai muttered quietly, looking down at the empty teacup Naru had handed her. Naru just shrugged. He motioned for her to stand so they could leave. Mai sighed and hurriedly went to go get the tea to carry with them. Once they were ready and had everything they wanted they set off for Naru's apartment. And when Mai remembered that both of them had walked, she groaned. She had just realized that she would be the poor sucker who had to carry everything.
