We do not own Ghost Hunt!
Mai was shocked.
"I-I'm sorry, could you run that by me again? I don't think I heard you right." She stammered. Naru frowned at having to repeat it.
"Would you...sleep in the bed...with me?" He asked again slowly, deciding that her brain couldn't comprehend the words. Mai almost collapsed with relief. He wasn't asking what she thought he was asking, he was just asking her to sleep next to him.
"O-Oh! Um, yeah..." She said as she nodded. It's not like they hadn't already done that. "Yeah, sure." Naru smiled. He was glad she agreed. "So...how do we go about this?" Mai asked awkwardly. "I mean who's wearing what?"
Naru shrugged. "The same thing that we've been wearing to bed?" He suggested.
"Well, last night I wore underpants..." She replied. Naru only nodded. Suddenly, she then remembered what happened the last time she slept in the bed with him though. She blushed a bright red. Well maybe he won't do that this time; he was sick then after all.
"Is something wrong Mai?" Naru asked concernedly.
"Hmm? No, ah, nothing's wrong." She smiled reassuringly. Naru wasn't exactly convinced but nodded anyway. "So...let's get to sleep!" She continued as she clapped her hands together.
"Okay." He agreed before starting to strip. Mai slowly began to do the same. She was soon down to just her underpants.
Mai pulled the sheets back from the bed a bit so they could get in. She paused when she noticed Naru was only in his underwear, he wasn't wearing any pyjamas. She went over to Naru's dresser—while trying to keep her blush under control—and got one of his shirts out.
"Here." Mai said as she tossed Naru the shirt. He just blinked at her as he caught it. He gave her a questioning glance but Mai pretended she didn't see it and continued to crawl into bed.
"Mai?" He asked just as she'd led down.
"Yeah, Naru?"
"Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, why?" She asked as she heard him putting on the shirt.
"You threw a shirt at me, I was wondering why." He stated.
"...Because you needed one." She simply replied. Naru frowned at her. It didn't sound like it was just because of that.
"Is that the only reason?" He pressed. He moved to the bed and slipped in it. The shirt he was wearing gaped open at the top a bit as he did so. He sighed in frustration. Mai turned away from him in the bed. He frowned at her again, especially when he realized she never answered his question.
"Mai, tell me what's wrong so I can help." He begged as he placed a hand on her shoulder.
"For starters you could remove your hand." She alluded, hoping he'd get what she was trying to tell him. Naru frowned yet again at her then realized she couldn't see his face.
"Why?" He questioned.
"Because you're not really helping 'the problem' with doing that..." She mumbled embarrassed.
"Doing what? What have I done?" He asked indignantly. Mai gave a small wince. He wasn't getting what she was trying to tell him. "Well?" He prompted.
"It's not like you know what you're doing..."
"What are you on about?" Naru questioned irritably.
"Naru, I'm still having 'that problem' if you know what I mean!" She exclaimed exasperatedly.
"Yes, but what's that got to do with me?" He asked. "Besides I thought it went away whilst we were changing the bed."
Mai breathed heavily. "It has everything to do with you actually... And yes, it did, but you...took...your clothes off..."
"How else was I supposed to get ready for bed?"
"I know that... Just forget it please. Let's just go to sleep... Tomorrow will be full of revenge." Mai turned her head towards Naru and smiled. Naru smirked back then hugged her before laying down and rolling over to face away from her.
"Goodnight, Mai."
"Night Naru." Mai yawned. Not after long both fell asleep side by side. They rolled over in their sleep to face each other not long after that. And a bit later Naru unknowingly wrapped his arm around Mai's middle and pulled himself closer to her. Mai also unknowingly wrapped an arm around Naru and secured his position against her. And for the whole night that's how they slept until morning.
Mai's eyes and Naru's eyes started to crack open the following morning simultaneously. At first they just stared at each other for a few moments, their minds still hazy from sleep. They still weren't in their right bodies but that didn't surprise them, their proximity to each other however did. Their eyes widened a bit before they jumped apart.
"Aaahhh" They both screamed. They were both on the edge of the opposite sides of the bed. They both tried to grab some duvet as they felt a bit exposed but wound up falling out of the bed instead.
"Ow, ow, ow..." Mai whined as she rubbed her butt.
"You think that hurt, I landed on my head!" Naru exclaimed as he got up clutching his now aching cranium. Mai sighed as she got on her knees and peeked over the bed at him.
"Sorry." She mumbled. Naru just shook his head.
"No, I'm sure landing on the other end hurt too." He said.
Mai smiled. "It did, but I meant sorry for freaking out."
Naru smiled too. "I am also sorry for freaking out. I didn't mean to you just surprised me."
Mai nodded in understanding. "Yeah, same here..."
"I wonder how that even happened." Naru mused. Mai shrugged and stood up.
"I don't know." She said. She glanced at the clock and her eyes widened a bit. "But we really need to hurry and call Lin before he gets to the office!" Naru glanced at the clock too.
"You're right. We should."
"What errand should we send him on?" Mai asked as they hurriedly went into the living room to retrieve the phone.
"I'm not sure, I hadn't thought of that." Naru confessed.
"Well, don't you sometimes send him off to do something?"
"Occasionally I guess..." Mai nodded and began to think of something for Lin to do.
"Hmm, how about sending him to buy more paper?" She suggested.
"That's no good, he did that last week." He informed.
"...Are there supplies that you're out of that he could get." Mai asked hopefully. Naru sighed and shook his head. "Ugh...oh, maybe we should...tell him to meet a potential client?!"
"That's a good idea." He replied. Mai nodded and picked up the phone, dialling Lin's number. He picked up on the third ring.
"Yes?" He asked.
"I have a client I need you to go and interview." Mai said. Lin was silent on the other end for a few moments.
"...May I ask why you can't do it?"
"Mai is still not feeling well so we're unable to come into the office today." Mai lied naturally. "The client requires a home visit though as they too are unable to meet at the office."
"And you have to stay with her why?"
"Because she needs looking after." Mai replied.
Lin sighed. "Where is the place?"
Mai threw a panicked look to Naru. They hadn't thought of that little detail. Naru looked like he wanted to do a facepalm. How could they forget?! He then suddenly had an idea.
"I will get the paperwork from your study Naru." He called out, remembering to make himself sound really ill.
Mai gave a nod of gratitude. "Mai went to go get the information." She told Lin.
"I heard." He replied. "Although if Mai is ill why would she go get it?"
"I said she was ill not an invalid." Mai inadvertently snapped. Luckily Naru came back into the room before Lin could say anything and a vague argument could start. He had made sure he chose the case proposal that was as far away from the office as possible. It also helped that the case intrigued him anyway so it would make Lin less suspicious as it sounded like something he would choose. He handed Mai the information and she relayed it to Lin.
"Mmhmm, I'll get right on it." Lin said. Mai lifted an eyebrow and glanced at Naru. From his tone it didn't sound like he was going to 'get right on it.'
Naru was frowning. Lin doesn't usually say something like that...It probably meant he was most likely lying about going to visit the client even though Naru actually did want him to interview them. He narrowed his eyes in annoyance. Lin was so dead...figuratively speaking anyway.
"Lin." Mai began in an authoritative tone. Naru grabbed a pen and paper and scribbled something down on it then showed it to Mai. "I told you-" Mai paused as she saw Naru handing her the piece of paper. She quickly read what it said then repeated its contents down the phone to Lin. "Mai and I are unable to go." She began. "And if you don't go we will kidnap Squeaky and...microwave him?" She cast a confused look at Naru who just smirked and motioned for her to say it more confidently. "I mean, we will kidnap Squeaky and microwave him." She said more forcefully. "Who the hell is Squeaky?" She asked Naru.
"Lin's rubber ducky." Naru answered. Mai's eyes widened in amusement. She had to bite the inside of cheeks and pressed her hand to her mouth to keep from bursting out laughing.
"I...see." Lin replied stiltedly down the phone. 'How dare Naru tell her about that!' "Is it really necessary that you threaten me?" He asked.
"Yes, because it sounded like you weren't going to go and I'm very interested in this case." Mai answered. Naru smiled and nodded. He was happy Mai noticed that he actually wanted the case. "Now, are you going to do as I have asked or is Squeaky going for a ride in the microwave?" She asked Lin.
"Fine." He reluctantly gritted out. "Fine, I'll go."
"Good, I will collect your notes tomorrow." She informed. In reply, Lin only hung up on her. "Goodbye to you too." Mai muttered to the dead phone in her hand. "I don't think Lin's going to be happy with you for a while." She told Naru.
"Why not?" He asked.
"You could tell he was irritated...and he just hung up on me without saying anything!" Naru just shrugged.
"He's always like that." He said.
"He wasn't like that the last few times I've talked to him..." She stated in confusion.
"Ah, but you've not threatened his rubber ducky before. Nor has there been the possibility that revenge will be taken on him for telling secrets he shouldn't have before."
Mai began to nod in understanding. "That makes sense... Well, we better get ready to head to the office!" She said as she walked back into the bedroom. Naru followed after her. "Remember to try and at least act like me when you're distracting Yasu, okay?" She asked as she dug through the dresser for some clothes to wear.
"And how do I do that?" He questioned.
"I don't know..." She mumbled. "Just think of how I would act."
"I don't think he'll want to drink my tea..." Naru pointed out.
"Don't offer him any then. All you should to do is talk to him until I get the laptop." Mai proclaimed as she got dressed in Naru's regular clothes.
"You offer everyone tea though and I don't know what to talk to him about, he annoys me."
Mai felt her lips begin to curve upwards. "If you keep him busy talking then you shouldn't have a problem...but um...for what to talk about..." Naru huffed, he really didn't want to be the decoy who distracts Yasuhara.
"Naru, if I talk to Yasu while in your body he probably won't leave you alone when we switch back so just to bear with it." Mai said, sensing Naru's mood. "And if he does that fake flirting thing, don't kick him...anywhere."
"Why can't we just send him in for the computer?" Naru asked.
Mai shot him a look. "And what would you tell him?!"
"I don't know. Lin asked for it?"
"That would not work! Yasu is waaay too smart to be fooled with something like that. You have to be careful! If Monk and Ayako are already on to us, who knows what Yasu will think." Naru let out a growl of frustration.
"Please get ready Naru!" She exclaimed hurriedly.
"Why?" He questioned petulantly.
Mai sighed, feeling like she was trying to hurry and get a child dressed for school. "Because first we have to make sure Lin is out of the office and we have to do something about his cameras."
"This is why I suggested sending Yasu into his office in the first place." Naru huffed. "We wouldn't have to worry about the cameras then."
"We'll figure it out on the way then!" Mai tried to settle it before they started another argument. Naru sighed, resigned to his fate. He beckoned for Mai to follow him since she was already dressed. He opened the front door. "Naru," Mai paused. "You're not dressed yet..."
"I'm not?" He asked as he looked down at himself.
"You're still in your pyjamas... Were you not listening to me when I kept telling you to get ready?" Naru just shrugged. Mai gave him a 'seriously?' look before she went to her suitcase to find Naru an outfit. 'He's a grown man, but he's acting like a child!' Naru stood and pouted in the corner. He wasn't sure he wanted to know what Mai would pick for him to wear. He just hoped it wasn't something indecent. When he saw Mai produce yet another of those barely there skirts from her bag he almost visibly panicked.
"Don't argue with me!" Mai began hurriedly as she walked to him. "We don't have that much time and...you're running out of clothes..."
"No, I'm not wearing that, I will go naked before I even contemplate wearing it." Naru stated firmly. Mai pressed her fingers to her head in a stressed way and whined. Naru just ignored her.
"This is one thing about the switch that you're going to have to get used to, Naru! When we're in the apartment you can wear whatever you want but please just put these on!" Mai held out the clothes to him. Naru then uttered something that Mai only half expected.
"Make me."
Her face automatically hardened and she sent him a cold glare. "You're arguing with me again, Naru." She told him seriously.
"Not necessarily, I am strongly disagreeing with you on your choice of outerwear for me, there is a difference." Mai only continued glaring at him.
"Look, Mai, I really don't want to wear that skirt. Surely there is something else I could wear."
Mai stepped aside as gestured for him to look in the bag. Naru felt like stomping frustratedly at her reaction. He didn't know what was for when. Heck, he'd rather just go in the pyjamas he was wearing to save time and also because he felt comfortable in them.
"You are not going around in just a shirt!" Mai cried, knowing what he was thinking. Naru blinked again and looked down. He'd forgotten he wasn't wearing anything on his legs as the shirt went down to his mid-thigh. Mai tossed the skirt to him. "Wearing this is no different than you wanting to go around in that! They're the same length!" Mai retorted.
He tossed it away. "They are not the same length." He insisted. Mai was just about to blow up at him but she calmed herself.
"You know what," She began frustratedly she walked passed him to the door. "Why don't you just stay here and I'll go by myself?"
"What an excellent idea Mai, I'm glad we sorted this out. I'll be in my study." Naru chirruped. Mai rolled her eyes and opened the door.
"Fine, but who knows if I'll be coming back or not though!" She said before she slammed the door behind. Naru wondered what she meant. Surely she didn't mean she would go back to her apartment...
