Minoko stared at her ceiling with a serious look. It was the end of the week so her letter issureto arrive today. She had not moved from where she laid on her bed since she woke up 2 hours ago, in anticipation. A loud ding made Minoko stretch her hand to reach for her phone.
Kirishima Eijirou:
MY UA LETTER JUST GOT HEREEEEE
Lucky,Minoko thought as her fingers typed a response. Before she could even hit send, her mother's voice echoed up the stairs.
"Mikko! A letter's here for you!"
Minoko shot up from her bed, nearly plummeting to the floor as her foot got tangled in her blanket. "Where is it?" She asked, stumbling down the stairs.
"Here you go."
She grabbed the envelope from her mother and made her way back to her room. She deleted the unsent message and typed a new one.
Kaeda Minoko:
Mine's here too!! AHHH I'm nervouss.
Minoko plopped down on her desk chair and put her phone to the side. She took a long hard look at the envelope and let out a loud exhale before opening it.
"I AM HERE AS A PROJECTION!"
Minoko's eyes widened, "What's All Might doing in my acceptance letter?"
"You might be wondering. 'What is All Might doing in my acceptance letter?'"
"How did—"
"Well! As of the start of the new term. I will be working as a teacher at U.A. and it is my pleasure to deliver the results of your exam, Young Kaeda!"The camera panned to a monitor and it started displaying a video of her destroying robots."Involving the written exam, you finished with remarkable scores! Now, as for the practical, you earned a total of 22 points."
Minoko's face twisted into a frown. 22 points aren't a lot, from what Kirishima told her, he had gotten around 39 points. That was a big difference, there are many examinees that could have gotten a score within that range.
"However! That was just for villain points. Another part of this exam is…"The video shifted and showed her preventing the tired looking purple haired boy from getting crushed by the beam, followed by her tapping the zero pointer, saving herself and Awase."Rescue points! Despite the chance of destroying an extra robot, when you saw the debris fall, you chose to save the boy instead. As for the zero pointer, you could have easily gotten out on your own without straining the capability of your quirk, but instead you pushed through and got both of you out. Both displayed the makings of a hero, and therefore you are awarded 35 rescue points. This brings up your total earned points to—"
"57?!" Minoko exclaimed. She watched the projection show her place 9th, a little below she could see she tied with someone named 'Tokoyami Fumikage.'
"Welcome to U.A. This is your Hero Academia!"
"I GOT IN!"
Minoko stuffed her phone in the pocket of her new uniform before checking herself one last time in the mirror. Her brown hair was tied back into a half ponytail, and hairclips pulled her bangs back. She buttoned her blazer and fixed her skirt, right above her knees. She checked her bag one last time, before heading downstairs.
"Breakfast?" her mother asked, once she spotted her daughter. "Oh hun, you look amazing in your uniform."
Minoko chuckled, "Thanks, also, no thanks. I'm so nervous, I'll probably get an upset stomach if I eat. I'll just grab something heavy for lunch."
"Well, you better get going," her father reached the living room, searching the couch for something. "You don't wanna miss your train."
"For goodness sake," her mother sighed, "you left your helmet out back."
"Oh," her father walked towards her, ruffling her hair, "Knock them dead!" he exclaimed as he exited through the backdoor.
"Bye!" Minoko exclaimed, waving as she closed the door to the house. She made her way to the train station, waving at Takuya who had a proud smile on her face as she passed by. She made it there, just as the train stopped.
Once she found a comfortable spot to stand at, she pulled her phone out and messaged Kirishima, who was already at school, apparently.
Kaeda Minoko:
What's it look like? Are there even people there already??
Kirishima Eijirou:
It looks like a classroom. I dunno what you want from me lol
Yeah, there's a guy here that scolded me about not wearing my blazer. D'you know how hot that thing is?? I think he's the same Examinee 7111 from teh entrance exam
Minoko kept chatting with Kirishima until she had to get off. She arrived at the school and tried to find her way around. The acceptance letter included two pieces of paper. One had her exam details as well as her class, Class 1-A. While the other was a map.If I remembered correctly the 1st year classrooms should be just around here. She rounded the corner and hit someone's back.
"WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING!" The blond boy yelled.
"Sorry!" She exclaimed. Backing away, she realized this was the same boy from the slime incident. What was his name again? Bakugou, right?
"DON'T MESS WITH ME HAIR CLIPS!" He turned and walked away.
Hair clips? She thought, reaching for the clips holding her bangs back. Sighing she continued walking a good distance away from the boy.
"Are you fucking following me?!" He exclaimed.
Minoko raised a defensive hand, "No! I—my classroom is this way."
The boy sneered at her, "1-A?" he asked, receiving a nod from the girl. "Fucking hell," he said, but let her be.Rude, she thought.
The two walked until they reached the first classroom. That's a huge ass door,Minoko thought, reading the giant 1-A painted on the door. The boy slid it open with a bang and headed inside, searching for his seat. Minoko followed his lead, and searched for her own. She found her desk behind someone named Ojirou.
"Kaeda!" Kirishima waved at her, two seats away, and gestured for her to come closer. "Took ya long enough."
"Ah! You dyed your hair!" Minoko exclaimed, walking over to Kirishima's desk.
"Yeah," Kirishima's eyes wandered away, "It doesn't look bad does it?"
Minoko chuckled, shaking her head, "No. Red really suits you."
"Of course! Red is such a manly color!" he said, passion radiating in his words.
"It does suit him, doesn't it?" A pink skinned girl grinned. "Hi! You must be Kaeda Minoko. I'm Ashido Mina!" She took her hand and shook it enthusiastically. "I went to the same middle school as Kirishima."
A shorter girl also introduced herself, "My name's Asui Tsuyu, but please, call me Tsu, ribbit."
"My turn!" A boy with blond hair with a black strike exclaimed. "Kaminari Denki, at your service!" He grabbed your other hand and leaned down to—
"Oh!" She pulled her hand away, earning a pout from the boy, " Well you guys already know who I am, apparently," Minoko chuckled.
"Sorry, they saw me messaging you and Ashido started pestering me," Kirishima smiled, bringing a hand to the back of his neck.
Minoko shook her head, "It's okay, less introductions, right?"
"Take your feet off that desk now." The voice caught their group's attention. Turning around she saw the same glasses wearing guy from the entrance exam. "Don't you think it's rude to the U.A. upperclassmen and the people who made that desk?"
Bakugou had a smirk on his face, "No! What kind of school did you go to, you extra?!"
"I attended Somei Private Academy. My name is Iida Tenya," the boy, Iida, said.
"Somei?!" Bakugou scoffed. " So you're a damn elite huh?! I'll have fun crushing you!"
Iida was taken aback. "Crushing me? That's horrible! Are you sure you want to be a hero?"
In the corner of her eye, Minoko noticed the green haired boy. It was that Midoriya Izuku. It seemed like the rest of the class noticed him as well. Iida started approaching him.Oh boy,Minoko thought, remembering the call out that happened during the entrance exam. She turned to the four, "I better go sit down." She gave a small wave and headed to her seat.
She sat down and, considering how close she was to the front, she couldn't help but watch as Iida and Midoriya converse when a new person appeared. She had short brown hair and introduced herself as Uraraka Ochako. Their lively conversation was interrupted when something yellow arrived at the scene.
Minoko leaned forward, trying to get a better look. "Sorry," she whispered as she bumped into the tail of the boy in front of her.
"If you're here to make friends, you best be heading home."
It spoke!
"It took you eight seconds to quiet down," the man stood up and started unzipping his sleeping bag. "Time is limited; you kids aren't rational enough."
Minoko watched as a man in an all black costume, disheveled hair and 'please end me' look, stepped out. She couldn't help but think that he looks familiar for some reason. "I'm your homeroom teacher, Aizawa Shouta," he introduced himself.
Mr. Aizawa pulled out a PE uniform from his sleeping bag, "It's kinda sudden, but put this on and meet me at the field."
Not wanting to question the man, the students made their way to the locker rooms. "I wonder what we're doing," Ashido wondered out loud, opening her locker door.
"I thought we were going to orientation first," a floating uniform said, "but, now I'm not too sure."
"That's what I thought too!" Uraraka joined their conversation as she changed her uniform.
"It is quite odd, is it not?" A tall girl asked. "There aren't many first day activities I can think of that involve PE uniforms."
Asui brought a finger to her lips, "Maybe he just wants us to be comfortable? Ribbit."
A girl with dark violet hair shrugged, "I highly doubt it, but here's to hoping, I guess."
Minoko tilted her head as she watched the interaction in front of her. She zipped her uniform's jacket, "You know, it's kinda hard to keep up with conversations when I have to refer to you guys as 'tall girl', 'floating uniform', and 'violet hair' in my head." Minoko shut her locker door, before facing the other girls with a smile. "I'm Kaeda Minoko!"
Ashido grinned, "I'm Ashido Mina!"
"Uraraka Ochako."
"Hagakure Tooru!"
"My name is Yaoyorozu Momo."
"Jirou Kyouka."
"And I'm Asui Tsuyu, you can just call me Tsu, ribbit."
"It's nice to meet you all!" Minoko said.
Yaoyorozu shut her locker door, and observed the others before her, "Shall we get going? We shouldn't keep Mr. Aizawa waiting."
"A Quirk Apprehension Test?" The class stood on the field chorus.
Seriously?"First day of school and we already have a test," Minoko muttered beside Kirishima.
"Tell me about it," Kaminari whispered from her other side. "For a guy who looks like he's ready to go back to bed, you'd think he would thrive off the opportunity to not teach."
Kirishima looked at them with a conflicted look, "That's not very manly though."
"What about the entrance ceremony? The Orientation?" Uraraka asked.
"If you're gonna be a hero, you don't have time for leisurely events," Mr. Aizawa said. "U.A. isn't very strict with school traditions. Teachers are allowed to run their class as they please." He faced the, "You kids have done these before right?" He showed them a list, "Physical Fitness Tests where you don't use your quirks?"
He turned to Bakugou, "Bakugou, you finished first on the entrance exam right?" Bakugou perked up. "How far were you able to throw a ball during junior high?"
"67 meters," Bakugou answered.
Mr. Aizawa threw a ball towards him. "Try it again, this time using your quirk."
Bakugou caught it and walked up. "Anything goes, just stay in the circle," Mr. Aizawa said. "Give it all you've got."
Bakugou started stretching his arm, "Alright then, you asked for it." He got ready for the pitch and as soon as he let go of the ball, a large explosion followed it.
Minoko watched in awe as the ball blasted up to the sky. Her eyes followed it until it hit the ground and Mr. Aizawa's device beeped. "The most rational way to form the foundation of a hero, is to know their maximum," Mr. Aizawa showed the class the result.
"705.2 meters?" Minoko said to herself.
The class erupted into excitement. "That's insane!" Kaminari exclaimed.
Mina clapped her hands together, "That looked like a lot of fun!"
A guy with oddly shaped elbows spoke, "That's the hero course for you! We can use our quirks freely!"
Minoko had to admit, free use of their quirk would be amusing to say the least. She'd always enjoyed the physical fitness tests that they did in middle school. Maybe thiswillbe fun.
Mr. Aizawa's demeanor shifted, "It looks fun you say? You have three years to become heroes. Will you still have that attitude then?" He asked, silencing the class. "Alright then," he looked up at them, a threatening smile on his face. "Whoever places last on all eight tests will be punished with expulsion."
Nope. She takes it back. Not fun at all.
Minoko crouched to the ground as she watched a boy named Aoyama, Ashido, and Asui step up for the first test, the 50 meter dash. She watched as they raced to the end of the track as a machine beeped, announcing their times.
Can I even really use that?Minoko thought. The machine was the one counting their time, if she exchanges with it, it wouldn't really count their time, now would it?Maybe I can use something else.Minoko hummed, tilting her head to the side as she watched the next group of people—Iida, Uraraka, and another boy, Ojirou—followed after the first three. But that would take me longer to finish.
She buried her head into her arms when she felt someone tap her shoulder, "Kaeda, we're up," Kirishima said, gesturing to the track.
Already?!Minoko's eyes widened as she stood up, following Kaminari and Kirishima. They took their places before the starting line. She stood to Kaminari's left, eyeing the machine at the end line. When she heard a loud sound mimicking that of a gunshot, she brought her right hand up and tapped herself.
Minoko found herself in her pocket dimension. "Ah," she said in realization, "I forgot to throw something to the end line." She let out a groan.Plan A it is.
The next thing she knew, she landed on the ground. By her feet was the end mark, and there was no machine in sight. Seconds later, Kaminari and Kirishima joined her, "How'd you get here so fast?!" Kaminari exclaimed.
"Kaeda," Mr. Aizawa called, "Next time, tell me if you will be using the machines as means for your quirk."
Minoko nodded and tilted her head into a bow, "I will, sorry."
"You're lucky your times are still recorded." Mr. Aizawa showed the three of them their times from the device he had been holding. Minoko's eyes landed on her time.
Sounds of disbelief came from the class. "0.19 seconds?!"
Their reaction was short lived as the next batch of students were called up by Mr. Aizawa.
Minoko took her place in one of the more secluded corners as she separated from Kirishima and Kaminari who both wanted a closer look at the exams. She crouched down, sitting on the ground, her legs pulled up to her chest as she watched from the distance. An unsettling feeling rested on her chest, making her look around. She locked eyes with Midoriya who was looking at her with interest and excitement.
"Hello?"
Midoriya crawled over to where she was, "You didn't tell me you were planning to be a hero too!" he exclaimed.
Minoko let out an awkward chuckle, "To be fair, during that time, I didn't even know if I wanted to be a hero," she said, reminiscing their conversation. "That talk we had really helped me clear some stuff up."
The boy immediately waved his hands around, "No, I uh, yeah, that's…"
Minoko laughed, "Which reminds me," she started, "I knew who you are 'cause of the news, but I never did introduce myself, did?" She extended her left hand towards Midoriya, "I'm Kaeda Minoko."
"Nice to meet you," he eyed her hand, "won't your quirk activate if I touch your hand?"
Minoko hummed, "Not really. It's my left hand, it only activates if I'm actively wanting to exchange items, or if I'm out of it," she explained, raising her other hand, "My right hand's the one you gotta look out for. Whatever it touches automatically gets sent to the pocket dimension."
"Oh, I see," Midoriya shook her left hand. "Do you mind if I ask more questions about your quirk? It sounds simple, but at the same time it seems like one of those quirks that come with a bunch of rules," he laughed.
Minoko shook her head, "I don't mind." Her eyes caught Mr. Aizawa eyeing them as the new batch started running. "Probably not now though. I think you're up next," she added.
"Oh, right!" Midoriya shot up. "Some other time then," he smiled at her.
Once everyone was finished with the 50 meter dash, they proceeded with the indoor tests which included Grip strength, Sit ups, Seated toe touches—all of which she scored decently at.Gym membership is really paying off.
Afterwards they were back on the field again. This time they were doing repeated side steps. She couldn't use her quirk this time either. In fact only that short kid Mineta did.
Oh no.Minoko grimaced.I made eye contact.
"Heh," Mineta flicked his head back, "Impressed?"
And will you look at that! That's a pretty rock. She walked away from the scene.
The Standing long jump was another one she was good with. This time, she warned Mr. Aizawa before exchanging with the machine again, which allowed her to clear the sandbox. Next was the Long distance run where they had to go around the building. A few of her classmates used their quirks and as much as Minoko would love to use hers, unfortunately, she wouldn't be able to use it until the final stretch when she can see the machine again, since honestly the field is pretty much bare.
Minoko was the 9th to finish the distance run, so she had a bit of time before the rest of her classmates finished. So here she was now.
"Uhh, what are you doing?" The kid with the odd looking elbows—Sero, if she remembered correctly—asked.
Minoko was crouched on the ground, slowly approaching a bird. "Preparations," she said, simply, leaving the boy—who had his eyes narrowed at her behavior—with more questions than an answer.
Now it was time for the Ball Throw. A lot of her classmates were waiting for this one, Uraraka in particular—and after the girl's performance, she understood why. "That's so cool," Minoko said, as Uraraka came back to the group.
Uraraka let out a laugh, bringing her hand up to the back of her neck, thanking her. "I'm sure you'll do well too!" she exclaimed.
Minoko hummed, "I hope so," she said, watching as Ojirou hit the ball with his tail.
"Kaeda," Mr. Aizawa called, "You're up."
Minoko caught the ball, and stood in the middle of the circle. She held the ball in her left hand, which was promptly exchanged with the bird she had coerced—caught—earlier. "Thanks for the help," she whispered as she let the bird fly forward.
In the corner of her eye, she could see the confused looks of her classmates. She watched the bird fly off, landing on one of the trees off the field. "972 meters," Mr. Aizawa called.
"HAH?!" Bakugou yelled, "How is that allowed?!!"
"The rule was 'Anything goes, just stay in the circle'!" she repeated the teacher's words.
"It's called Ball Throw you idiot!"
"Yeah, and we'resupposedto use our quirks, moron!"
"Who're you calling a moron?! You have a death wish?!"
Their classmates' heads went back and forth from you then to Bakugou, then back to you, as they watched the two's yelling competition. "Enough, both of you," Mr. Aizawa scolded before looking at Bakugou. "She's right, those were the only rules I gave. She did a good job being resourceful." Bakugou scowled as Aizwa looked over to Minoko—who was beaming from the approval, "And Kaeda, your turn's over, move along."
"Yes, sir," Minoko walked away, and took her place next to Kirishima.
"Sothat'swhat that's for? Pretty neat, not gonna lie." Sero complimented her.
"Yeah," Kirishima agreed, placing his hands on his waist, "I probably wouldn't have thought of it and just did the test normally." She almost did. "That's supper manly!"
"Would probably watch your back though."
Minoko tilted her head, at the new voice, "What do you mean?"
Kaminari came up from behind her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, turning her slightly to the left, "He's been glaring ever since Mr. Aizawa scolded him," he said.
Minoko was quick to avert her eyes when she met Bakugou's gaze."He's just being pissy after losingtwicein a short period of time," she said, shrugging Kaminari's arm off, "As long as I don't place higher than him in the final standing, I'll live."
She watched the rest of her class do the test, and everything seemed to be going normally, until it was Midoriya's turn when Iida decided to say something. "He's in a really bad place right now," he said.
"Of course he is! He's a quirkless loser!" Bakugou sneered.
"Did you not hear about what happened at the entrance exam?" Iida exclaimed, "He was able to take down that 0 pointer in just one punch!"
Okay, now Minoko was confused. He told me he had enhanced strength? She watched as Midoriya took his place in the circle, pulling his arm back, readying himself to throw the ball. Then again, I haven't seen him use his quirk yet. Not even during the grip strength since that Shouji guy was the only one with an outlier result.
"42 meters." The ball landed not too far from the circle.
"I was sure I was using it just now," she hears Midoriya say.
"I erased your quirk."
Erase?Minoko's eyes widened as Mr. Aizawa's red eyes came into view.I've seen that before. She remembers the videos she had watched from the forum.
"Eraserhead," she whispered at the same time Midoriya exclaimed the man's hero name.
"Eraserhead, who's that?" Someone from the group asked.
Kirishima nudged her with his elbow, "You know who that is?" he asked, hearing her whispered voice.
Minoko nodded, "He's an underground hero that specializes in stealth missions," she said, eyes not leaving the man as he scolded Midoriya about something. He complimented me about being resourceful earlier.
She faced Kirishima, "He complimented me about being resourceful earlier," she repeated her thoughts. She reached for Kirishima, and began shaking him, "Kirishimaaa!!"
The redhead only laughed as he was thrown back and forth, "A fan I'm guessing?" he asked, earning enthusiastic nods from the girl.
The man was literally the one who—unknowingly—made her more confident about not having a combative quirk. She probably would have stuck with the office job if she didn't have that talk with Midoriya that introduced her to underground heroes. Of course, she probably wouldn't be sayingthatout loud anytime soon.
Their attention then shifted back to the field when Midoriya took another stand. He pulled his arm back again, and the ball flew with a strong gust of wind. "Mr. Aizawa," Midoriya called, clutching his injured finger, "I'm still standing," he said, earning himself a grin from the teacher.
"Over 700 meters!?" Kaminari exclaimed.
Uraraka cheered from the side, "Finally a hero like record!"
"So strong!" Minoko exclaimed, "but…" she craned her neck to the side to see if she wasn't seeing things. "His finger's swelling?"
"Yeah," Iida said. "It happened in the entrance exam too. What a strange quirk."
"Not stylish!" Aoyama exclaimed.
"DEKU!" Bakugou was flying out of the group towards Midoriya. "What did you do, you shitty nerd!" Before he could get his hands on the other boy, he was held back by white clothing.
Capture weapon.Minoko corrected in her mind, and Mr. Aizawa explained just that.
"It's a capture weapon made out of special metal wires and carbon fiber," Mr. Aizawa said, pulling the boy back."Jeez, stop making me use my quirk again, and again. You're giving me dry eye."
Mr. Aizawa let the last two students get their turn before they went on with the results. "Verbally announcing them one by one is a waste of time, so here it is in one go." Mr. Aizawa projected a list into the air.
Minoko searched for her name and a relieved sigh escaped her when she found herself in 6th place. It was a surprising placement, but thinking about it, not everyone's quirks were useful on a lot of tests. She was lucky to have been able to use her's on four of them along with doing decent on the others she didn't.Some were only able to use theirs once. Her eyes wandered further down the list and saw the 21st person.
Midoriya. She felt bad for the boy. From her short conversation with him, she knew he really wanted to be a hero. Her eyes wandered to Mr. Aizawa. Is he really gonna expel him?
As if on cue, "Oh, and also," Mr. Aizawa hunched forward, "No one is getting expelled. It was just a logical ruse," he said, nonchalantly.
The class exclaimed in surprise. All except Yaoyorozu who seemed like the only one who knew what was going on.
"Midoriya, head to the infirmary and get that finger treated," Mr. Aizawa said before turning to the rest of the class. "Everyone else, get changed and head back to the classroom. You'll find your syllabus on your desks, read through them in the meantime."
The class let out a collective "Yes sir!" Before heading back.
I'm beat,Minoko thought, her posture slouching. She looked up at the building as they entered it.Well! That's the hero course for you!
Notes:
We're finally at U.A.!! I hope you guys enjoyed the chapter! Up next is the battle trials!
TRIVIA!!
Only Minoko's right hand has her quirk activated at all times. Her left hand only activates when she needs to exchange something. Despite being right handed as a child, she is now considered ambidextrous, due to her adapting with using her left hand to avoid sending items—particularly her pens—to the pocket dimension.
