Mai was still stood cursing at the boxes by her feet. Why couldn't she reach the stupid box?! She wasn't going to give up though. That would mean that Naru won and she couldn't have that. She had to show him she could do it by herself. She had to or she might lose him to someone else who was better than her. Before she could try again Naru picked up the box.
"Come on, let's take them to the van." He said before walking away with it. Mai's eyes twitched in irritation.
"Naru!" She ran to catch up to him with the one box still in her arms.
"Yes Mai?" He asked even though he knew what she was probably going to say.
"Why'd you do that?!" She bellowed.
"Because if I hadn't I'd have been stood around watching you struggle all day." Mai puffed out her cheeks.
"Well who said you had to watch me!"
"How could I keep my eyes off the most beautiful girl in the world?" He questioned smoothly. Mai stopped in mid-step while Naru just kept walking. She was a little taken aback that Naru would—could—say such a thing. Sometimes that man could be so surprising.
"D-don't try to distract me, you jerk!" Mai's cheeks were flared up from embarrassment.
"Distract you from what?"
"From yelling at you!"
"Now why would you want to do a thing like that?"
"Because you took the box from me when I said I had it!" Mai would've poked his chest if her arms weren't full. Naru let out a sigh but kept silent, he wasn't going to have an argument with her. Thankfully Mai let the issue go also, but not before she huffed, glared, and ignored him for a little while. They soon reached the van and deposited their boxes. When they went back up to get the last ones, Mai stopped by an elderly neighbour of hers.
"Mai, now what are you doing?" Naru questioned as he paused to wait for her. When he turned to look at her he saw some old lady talking to her. He blinked.
"Yeah, I'm really sorry but I won't be able to help take care of Hoshi and LingLing anymore Mrs Fukunaga." She explained.
"Oh that is sad Dear. May I ask why?" The old lady replied.
"I'm moving out today." Mrs Fukunaga got a sharp look on her face.
"That Mr Kazuyoshi hasn't been up to no good and thrown you out has he?"
"No, no." Mai reassured. "I...uh...I'm moving in with my boyfriend." She admitted shyly.
"Oh kids today. You're all so fast." The old woman sighed. "I suppose this is the Young Gentleman stealing you away is it?" She asked as she peered at Naru through her spectacles. Mai nodded and blushed. "Come here Young Man, let me see you properly." She directed.
Naru carefully went closer to the pair. Mrs Fukunaga immediately grabbed him by the arm and started inspecting him.
"Hmm, nice looking face, interesting eyes, could do something about the hair..." She muttered as she yanked his face down to eye level using his shirt. "You're not into fruity stuff are you?" She asked him with a sharp eye but didn't wait for an answer. "Good set of muscles and look at this tush, it's to die for!" She exclaimed as she gave him a smack on the rear.
Naru was shocked and blushing. "I think you've done really well with this one Mai. I'm happy for you." Mai giggled and thanked her before towing her stunned boyfriend away from the old lady's apartment and back to her own. Mai nonchalantly collected another box while Naru still stood in the doorway, shocked by what just occurred.
"What the...who...why...?" He stuttered as he tried and failed to make sense of what had just happened.
"Mrs Fukunaga? Don't mind her, she's harmless really." Mai told him.
"She was looking at me like I was some prized stallion!" He exclaimed. Mai giggled at his analogy.
"Yeah and you won her over...Stud." She tittered before starting to leave with the box she was holding. "Just be thankful she didn't decide to examine your equipment." She called over her shoulder. Realizing what she meant Naru's eyes widened. He quickly got the last remaining box, shut the door, and hurried after Mai. He skittered past the old lady's apartment lest she suddenly jump out at him and try to go for round two.
What the hell kind of weirdoes was Mai associating herself with? He hoped there wasn't any more like that old lady. He felt slightly relieved when he made it to the van unscathed and placed his box inside it. However he unfortunately realized Mai was nowhere around the van. The box she was carrying was stacked on top of another, but she wasn't there. He started to panic. Where was she?
"Mai..." Naru slowly called out. "Mai!" He yelled again when he got no answer. Where the heck did she go?! He was getting really worried now. Naru looked at the apartments. Could she have gone to see someone else...? What about that landlord of hers? He thought they were seeing him together though... She wouldn't have gone without him would she? Honestly he didn't think she would. So where could she have gotten to? He walked closer to the building and called out her name again. Much to his relief, this time an apartment door opened and Mai's head poked out.
"Why are you shouting Naru?" Naru sighed heavily and walked to Mai.
"Mai, where the hell did you go?" He asked.
"To this apartment, obviously." Mai replied. Naru raised an eyebrow, wanting more of an explanation.
"Why?"
"Surely it's obvious Naru. To tell my landlord about the things I'm leaving in my apartment." Naru glared slightly. So she had gone there.
"I thought we were both going." He said.
"You were taking too long." She shrugged. "Come on though." Mai grabbed his arm and dragged him into the apartment. A sour faced man was its only occupant and Naru assumed this must be Mai's landlord.
"So this is your so-called boyfriend, huh?" That immediately made Naru want to punch the guy. Instead he calmed himself and gave a verbal reply in place of Mai.
"So this is your so-called landlord, huh?" He returned. Mai glanced nervously between the two, sensing the sudden tension.
"What did you say you Punk?!" Mr Kazuyoshi, Mai's landlord, demanded.
"A-As I was saying Mr Kazuyoshi, I'm going to leave some things..." However Mai's attempt to turn the landlord's attention away from Naru was futile.
"I asked you what you said you Punk!"
"I don't believe I need to repeat myself. Besides if you couldn't understand me the first time I don't think there is any helping you in your loss of hearing." Naru replied sarcastically. Mr Kazuyoshi turned red then purple with anger.
"Naru...!" Mai desperately chided. Naru spared Mai a glance before looking back at the man, who was changing colours in front of him.
"He started it." He muttered under his breath. Mai sighed, placing two fingers on her forehead in a frustrated manner.
"Oh my god..." She said quietly. "Could you be any more childish?" She removed her hand and then stood in between Naru and Mr. Kazuyoshi. "Stop fighting. I only came here to..."
"Out the way Girly, this is between me and him." Mr Kazuyoshi said as he pushed her aside. That just seemed to make Naru angry now instead of annoyed.
"How dare you touch her!" He growled menacingly. "I'm going to teach you a lesson you'll never forget."
Mai quickly intervened once again as she stood in front of Naru. "Naru, stop! Just go wait back outside, please!"
"No. He assaulted you Mai and I'm not having it."
"Please, Naru, it's okay. Just go and let me finish up here." Mai begged as she placed both her hands on his upper arms. Naru narrowed his eyes at the landlord before reluctantly doing as he had been asked. He sent a warning glare to the man before leaving. Mai laughed nervously. "I-I'm sorry about that, Mr. Kazuyoshi..." He looked like he was going to go after Naru to finish what they'd started though and wasn't paying Mai the slightest bit of attention. "He can be a little headstrong sometimes... But please, I hope you don't take it to heart—he didn't mean it." Mai continued to babble, apologizing on Naru's behalf. He still continued to ignore every word she said and remained focussed on the door Naru had exited through, still deciding whether to continue the argument that had been started. "Anyways about my things in the apartment..."
"Will you be quiet?" The landlord snapped. Mai was a little taken aback at the outburst.
"I-I'm sorry...?"
"You heard. Your voice is doing my head in and I'm trying to think." Mai just nodded not knowing what else to do. She stood awkwardly for a few moments. What was she supposed to do? She still needed to speak with him, but he won't listen to her. She now just felt trapped. Should she leave...? Maybe that would be best. Hopefully she could just slip out without him saying anything. She half wished she hadn't sent Naru away now. But then again a fight would have probably endured if she hadn't. At least she would've been able to get out of here though.
"I'll just...um, go..." Mai whispered uncertainly, walking to the door. Mr Kazuyoshi just let out a grunt before she slipped through the door. Mai sighed, her hand still on the handle, when she got outside.
"Mai? Are you okay? What happened?" Naru asked.
"Ahh...everything is fine, I'll just come back tomorrow." She gave him a small smile.
"Tomorrow? Why?"
"Apparently he's not in the mood to talk right now." Mai replied, placing her hand on the back of her head sheepishly.
"Oh isn't he?! Well I'll make him talk..."
"No Naru." Mai sighed. She was way too tired for this. "Please let's just go back to your apartment so I can unpack." Naru let out a breath and nodded. Whatever his princess desired she shall have. Mai smiled at him before grabbing his arm and dragging him back to the van. She planted a slow lingering kiss on his lips before climbing into the passenger seat. Grinning at him, Mai slammed the door shut before he could do anything. He stood dumbfounded for a moment before slowly walking to the driver's side.
He tried to shake away the daze Mai put him in. He needed to focus if he was going to drive them to his apartment without crashing. Naru shook his head before climbing into the seat and starting up the van. Mai could be so...enigmatic sometimes. She was really going to have to stop doing those things before he lost control. He didn't think he could control himself the next time she surprised him like that. He knew she would be uncomfortable and upset if he went 'too far' like the last time though. He hoped she would give him some forewarning next time so that didn't happen.
They quickly made it back to Naru's apartment. Immediately they started unloading the boxes from the van. This time Naru told Mai to make sure she only carried one at a time. Although she kept saying how unfair it was for him to be doing the majority of the work. He only shrugged and replied he was stronger so it didn't matter. She couldn't help but secretly feel frustrated about that. Still, she could always do the unpacking all by herself.
As Mai and Naru got the last boxes, they slammed the doors to the van shut and walked back to their apartment. It felt funny to Mai to think of it like that but it also made her smile. She guessed that since she was living there now, it was both of theirs. It would probably take some time to get used to it though.
"Ne, you don't have any weird neighbours, do you Naru?" Mai randomly asked as they struggled to enter the apartment.
"I don't believe so, why?" He questioned. Mai shrugged.
"Just making sure I know what I'm getting myself into." She grinned playfully at him, going in first.
"Don't worry, there are no Mrs Fukunaga's here as far as I'm aware." Naru called after her. Mai twirled around with confusion written over her face.
"What's wrong with Mrs. Fukunaga?" She asked.
"Mai, did you not see what that woman did to me?" He questioned, still unable to get over what happened.
"She just liked you is all." Mai replied, placing her box down in the living with the rest.
"She smacked me on my rear." He pointed out.
"She's a harmless old lady."
"That mauls men!"
Mai rolled her eyes. "Will you relax?"
"I will now I'm far away from her." Naru answered.
"Naru!" Mai couldn't stop the smile from forming on her face while she slapped his arm, reprimanding him.
"Well look at it from my point of view. What if I had a male version of Mrs Fukunaga who decided to check you out to see if you were worthy enough to date me, how would you feel?" He asked.
Mai paused.
"...You wouldn't let that happen anyways." She finally replied cheekily.
"Damn straight I wouldn't and I'm disappointed you did."
"I'm sorry." Mai tried to sound serious while trying to repress a smile also. Naru pouted and narrowed his eyes. Mai giggled before reaching up and giving him a quick kiss. "I promise I won't let it happen again!"
"You'd better not." He muttered. He finally placed the boxes he was holding beside the rest of them. He breathed a sigh of relief for having gotten the work done.
"I need to return the van. Do you want to come along too?" He asked. With her hands on her hips, Mai glanced at her things.
"No...I think I'll stay here and try to unpack."
"Okay." Naru nodded before exiting the apartment once more. Mai sighed after she waved goodbye to Naru. She then turned and looked at all the boxes she had to unpack. Now where was she going to put everything? She was sure Naru wouldn't mind if she moved some stuff around. Besides it wasn't much anyways.
She opened the first box to see what was inside. All of her toiletries were there. To the bathroom it was then. Mai picked up the box, full of her things, and made her way to said room. Now, where should she put her things? She looked around for a space. Luckily Naru didn't have too many things... She should have enough room for her stuff.
She started placing her items in every available bit of space and occasionally moving things of Naru's to suit her needs. She was sure he probably wouldn't mind. So what if the bin was now on the other side of the bathroom next to the toilet? It was all so she didn't have to try and awkwardly move across to it when she needed to and it wasn't like he needed it right next to the sink. And what did it matter she'd rearranged his bathroom cabinet? It wasn't like there was anything important he needed to get to whereas she absolutely had to know where to find her skin care products. As Mai finished in the bathroom, she gave a nod of approval. Yes, this would do absolutely fine.
