We don't own Ghost Hunt!
"G'day." John intoned down the phone.
"Hello John." Naru greeted.
"Ah Mai, to what do I owe the pleasure of this call?" He asked.
"I'm not Mai anymore, John. I called to let you know we have somehow switched back now."
"Oh. Well that's brilliant news. Good to hear that." He said lamely but what exactly can you say to someone who mystically swapped bodies with someone and then called to tell you they've now switched back? "Did you ever figure out how you two...switched bodies?" John asked, however of course he already knew the answer.
"No, we are still working on that part but we will get to the bottom of it, mark my words." Naru said bitterly. Who or what ever did this was going to pay.
"I...I see." John replied a little shakily.
"Mai and I had to go through a lot because of this."
"I'm not disputing that Kazuya." John answered. He might slip up and accidentally hint that it was Lin who switched them. He decided to change the subject. "Well anyway, it's great news you two are back to normal. If there isn't anything else..." He left the end of the sentence blank.
"No, that's all. I just thought I'd inform you before Mai began to scream at me to." Naru replied with a hint of amusement in his voice.
"Is there...is there something going on between you two that I should know about?" John asked.
"What do you mean?" Naru asked in slight confusion.
"I don't know, you sounded...different when you talked about her." He mused. Naru let a small smile form on his lips. He thought about whether he should tell John about his new found relationship with Mai. At least the priest wouldn't make a big deal out of it or anything like the others would. Maybe he could entrust him with this.
"There...must be a reason for that." Naru said hesitantly.
"Oh? And what would that be?" John asked curiously.
"Can you not work it out for yourself?" Naru asked nervously. It still seemed weird to say it...
"Um...Mai taught you the joys of having a puppy and now you own one?" John suggested.
"Ah, no...not quite."
"Then what?" He asked. Naru briefly wondered how exactly he was supposed to say this. "Kazuya you can tell me anything. I strongly encourage it." John told him. "Then I can put it on the internet later." He muttered as a joke. 'It seems safe enough to tell him...' Naru thought. '...then again I thought I heard him mutter something about the internet just now...what should I do?' He sighed. "Kazuya, are you still there?" John asked.
"Yes, I am..." He breathed. Might as well come right out and just say it—everyone is bound to know eventually. "Mai and I are...dating now."
"Finally! I thought it would never happen!" John exclaimed. "And please Kazuya, for the love of the Lord, don't screw it up." Naru blinked in surprise.
"What...what do you mean 'thought it would never happen'?" Naru questioned. John gave a sheepish laugh.
"Well everyone knew how you two felt about each other, but we never knew if anything was going to happen since neither of you seemed to be making any progress."
"What? No, that's impossible. I would have known if she had feelings for me sooner." Naru denied.
"...Mai's liked you almost as long as she's known you." John said hesitantly. Maybe he shouldn't be saying this...
"That's not true. That can't be true. She liked Gene not me."
"Ah...no... You just believe that."
"Excuse me...?" Naru hissed. John's face paled. He knew he shouldn't have said that... "What did you just say?!"
"Oh look at the time Kazuya, I must go as I have a sermon to prepare." John said. 'Please God forgive me for the sin of telling lies. I pray it won't happen again.' The priest quickly ended the call before Naru could yell further.
"Damn it!" Naru swore at the phone in his hand. Standing up, he tossed it on to the couch. He refused to think about what John had just said to him. It wasn't true, it couldn't be. He had a lifetime of experience with this situation so he should know. It was Gene she had loved not him, it was always Gene people loved, not cold, calculating Oliver who would rather sit in a corner with a book than join in. He was now Mai's consolation prize and he accepted that. She couldn't have the twin she had fallen for but the one with the same face would do and maybe if he treated her right she would fall in love with him eventually and accept him for who he is.
"Naru?" He suddenly heard Mai's voice. He turned around and saw her in the doorway, rubbing her eyes sleepily. "What were you yelling at?"
"Nothing much, just some news on the television." He lied. He couldn't tell her the real truth. Mai furrowed her brows suspiciously but she didn't say anything else about it. She was sure Naru would tell her what was bothering him when he was ready.
"Oh...okay..." She said hesitantly.
"I apologize if I woke you, I know you were tired."
Mai shook her head. "It's fine, I shouldn't have fallen asleep to begin with. I need to make dinner anyways."
"No Mai, if you need to rest you need to rest. Today has been stressful and I don't think you making dinner is the wisest decision. We shall either go out or order in, your choice." The brunette bit her lip. She was kind of tired...
"Order in, I guess then." She stated as she walked up to him.
"Alright. What do you fancy?" He asked.
"Umm...English food again?" Mai grinned up at him. Her anger from earlier was already forgotten. Naru smirked.
"And what exactly would you like?" Mai shrugged.
"You can pick that part." She declared. Naru rolled his eyes before scanning the menu he'd gotten from the kitchen then ringing the restaurant and ordering. Mai waited patiently on the couch. When Naru was finished with ordering he went over to her and sat by her. Scooting closer to him, Mai placed her head on his shoulder. "I'm sorry about earlier..."
"No, you had every right to ask why I wouldn't wear those clothes. I would probably do the same if I were in your place." Mai let out a slow breath, wrapping her arms around Naru's arm to snuggle into him more. Naru reached over with his free hand and patted hers in what he hoped was a comforting gesture.
"Is something wrong, Naru?" Mai asked worriedly.
"No Mai, not at all." Mai gave a small nod, but she didn't believe what he said. She knew by his tone that something was wrong. She just hoped it wasn't something foolish such as something to do with his brother. She seriously hoped they were over that. She had thought she had made it clear to him by now that it had always been him she loved but knowing Naru...
"I love you." Mai blurted out before she knew it.
"I love you too Mai." Naru said. The young woman bit her lip as she glanced up at him to take a look at his face. As usual it was guarded though. She couldn't tell what he was thinking or feeling anywhere on his face. Even his eyes were blank of emotion. That worried her more than anything. It made her wonder if he truly had registered it was him she loved or if he was still hung up on the idea that she only likes him because he looks like his brother. She wanted to do or say something to get it through his head that it was him, but...what? There wasn't exactly anything she could do or say to make him believe in what she was saying if he had this stupid notion about Gene in his head. But still...she wanted to at least try.
"Naru, you do know I love you right?" She asked. "And only you? No one else?" Naru's eyes twitched slightly. This, of course, didn't go unnoticed by Mai since she was staring up at him. She waited but Naru didn't offer any reply. Her heart clenched painfully at that. She knew that no matter what she said he wouldn't believe it and it would hurt her more if she tried. A large lump formed in her throat and her chest tightened so much that it was hard to breath. 'Why doesn't he believe me?! Why is he even with me if he doesn't...?' She moved away from him and curled herself up tight. 'He hasn't answered me... I know this is the problem he's thinking about...' She let out a small sigh.
"Why won't you believe me?" She whispered, not really expecting him to answer. "Why did you always think it's Gene? It's not!"
"Mai, common sense dictates it would be Gene. Who would consciously want to date me?" Naru murmured sadly. "No-one. I'm broken and always have been. I don't work correctly, I'm not friendly, I don't smile and I deliberately distance myself from others. Nobody would want to be associated with a person like that let alone date them."
"I would." Mai firmly stated with a lot of force. She turned to him and made him look at her. "You're not 'broken', Naru. You never have been. You might not smile all the time, but when you do it makes it all the more special—I get butterflies in my stomach every time you do; I don't have that with anyone else. And I know you try to distance yourself from everyone because you're afraid of being hurt again—to care for someone again. Don't try to deny it." Naru lowered his eyes away from her fierce gaze. "Naru, look at me. I think you are one of the most special people the world has to offer because you're different. You show how much you care in the way you cut people down with your sharp words. You make us all think and want to better ourselves so that you might approve and treat us as equals when in fact you put us all far above yourself which is why you insist on pushing us. You tell me to believe in myself and trust in others but immediately hit rock bottom when you make a tiny mistake. You puzzle me and challenge me and I couldn't imagine spending my life with anyone else, not even Gene."
Mai suddenly hugged him, wrapping her arms around his neck. He couldn't help but wrap his own arms around her in return. "Stop doubting yourself, Naru...no one wants you to become anything but you, especially me. I never want you to change." She whispered into his ear. Naru held her slightly tighter. "I've always loved you...so stop saying it's Gene. Not everything is about him." He let out a sigh and turned his head away. What was he supposed to say to all of that? He didn't even know if he could...should...believe what she had said especially when his mother had the catchphrase of 'why can't you be more like your brother?'. Then again Mai isn't the type who wouldn't be passionate about something if she didn't think it was right...and she was pretty passionate in her speech just now. Could he trust her about this? He had never known her to lie...
Naru sighed before speaking. He weighed his words carefully.
"Mai..." He began softly.
"Yes Naru?" She asked looking at him earnestly. She saw the hesitancy in his eyes. "What is it? You can tell me anything."
"Even though you say you do, it's just kind of hard to believe..." Naru reluctantly admitted.
"I know that Naru but I'm asking for you to trust me like I trust you." She replied. Mai rested her forehead on his, their noses gently rubbing against each other. They both closed their eyes as they enjoyed their nearness to each other. 'Please let him believe me this time... I don't want him to keep doubting himself like this.' Naru squeezed her tighter. He placed one hand on her head and clutched her hair, burying his face into it. She gently patted his shoulder in an effort to comfort him. She waited patiently for him. Eventually he took his face out of her hair. Mai pulled back to look at his face as he did. He looked like he had been silently crying. Cupping his cheeks with both of her hands, Mai placed a soft kiss on his lips. Naru returned the kiss a little. Mai had taken that as a good sign at least. Hopefully he just needed a little time and he would be okay.
Sooner than Mai had expected—she didn't realize they had stayed like that for so long—their dinner had finally arrived.
"I'll get it." Naru said as he carefully disentangled himself from Mai. The young brunette sighed as she watched him walk to the front door. She heard it open, a few mumbled words exchanged and then it closed again before he returned. Silently he sat back down beside her, giving her, her food as he did. She opened it up before remembering they'd need something to eat it with. She stood up mumbling a 'be right back' before disappearing into the kitchen. Naru heard her rattle around for a few moments before she returned with items in her hands. She handed him his utensils before sitting down.
"Um...Mai, I don't think a knife and a teaspoon are going to help me here." Naru told her. Mai froze, her eyes shifting to the objects in her boyfriend's hands.
"I got it wrong? Damn it!" Once again Mai stood up to go find the correct utensils. She rattled around for a few moments before returning again. She was still mentally cursing herself. Her mind must have been too preoccupied with Naru's behaviour to notice what she had gotten. Not that she'd really known what to get. "These are right, right?" She asked Naru. He nodded and she breathed a sigh of relief. 'At least I didn't make a complete fool out of myself again.' They began to eat. Silence surrounded them all throughout their meal. Naru also never really confirmed whether he believed her or not, but she guessed now wasn't the time to ask.
She wasn't sure if she could take the silence much longer. After they'd finished eating still neither one talked. It was starting to frustrate Mai. Why wasn't Naru saying anything to her? Maybe she should break the silence and ask...Then again he should come to her on his own when he's ready. She didn't know what to do in the meantime though. 'Although I could go take a shower...' Mai thought. '...I do need one...' Standing up, Mai sighed as she decided to go take one.
