We don't own Ghost Hunt!
An alarm sounded throughout the room at six in the morning, causing two teenagers to groan at being disturbed from their sleep. Luckily Naru got to it first for if Mai had it probably would've gone on an impromptu flying trip into a wall.
"I thought I turned it off last night..." Naru mumbled irritably. Mai just grunted in her half asleep state. She rested her head back against his chest when he settled back down on the bed. She gently patted his chest as though she were fluffing a pillow and promptly fell asleep again. Naru sighed, realizing he couldn't get up right now. He decided he'd let her sleep a bit more before they needed to get up to get ready. He really did need to go to the office today.
He would have to take Mai with him also as there was nowhere else she could go as she was still banned from school. She still had another week before she could go back. Then again he guessed it was his fault. But hey, that guy deserved it! He should've kept his hands to himself. Now hopefully that guy should leave her alone from now on though. If he didn't a whole new world of pain would be coming to him.
Naru smirked. Oh yes, lots and lots of pain. What he did to him in Mai's body was nothing compared to what he could do in his own. Crushed nuggets and broken nose would seem like a walk in the park after he was done with him. 'The same also goes for anyone who messes with Mai.' He squeezed Mai slightly tighter. He kissed her forehead gently. He would protect her with all he had.
An hour later Naru tried to wake Mai back up. She whined and whimpered but didn't wake. She just tightened herself up on him more.
"Mai, it's time to wake up." He crooned.
"Mm..." She muttered but made no attempt to move.
"Come on Mai." He continued to coax.
"Un, mm..." Naru didn't know what she said but he could only guess it was a denial.
"Don't make me use force." He warned.
"Kay..." But once again, she made no effort in getting up. Why did she care he was going to use force? All he'd do was pick her up.
"Alright, you asked for it. Can't say I didn't warn you." He sighed dramatically. He peeled the sheets from them and eyed his target. Her shirt was lifted slightly giving him the perfect access point. He carefully placed his hand where the shirt was lifted and began wriggling his fingers, effectively tickling her. As soon as he made contact with her skin, Mai let out a small, laughing scream. He could feel her muscles tighten considerably. He kept up his work even when she began thrashing about and begging him to stop.
"N-Naru! Please, I'll...ge-get up!" Mai giggled uncontrollably.
"Hmm, how can I trust you to do that if I stop?" He asked in an amused tone.
"I-I promise!"
"Alright..." Naru said warily as he removed his hand from her stomach. Mai let out a sigh of relief. She then rolled over onto her stomach and closed her eyes again. "Mai!" Naru warned. Mai smirked into her pillow.
"You had to see that coming, Naru." Mai mumbled. Truthfully he had but he had also tried to trust her and he told her as much. "I'm sorry." Mai smiled a bit as she sat up. "I promise I'll get up now." Naru eyed her warily again. "I will." She insisted, removing the covers from her to show that she truly meant it. Naru nodded and got out of bed. Mai stretched and yawned before doing as she promised. Naru's gaze was transfixed on her as she did so. Despite just freshly getting out of bed, she looked so beautiful. Her stretches were graceful like a cat and they accentuated her lithe body wonderfully.
"What?" Mai blinked when she caught him still staring at her.
"Huh...nothing...*ahem* I mean, nothing at all is wrong, why would it be?"
Mai gave an amused, uncertain smile. "I don't know...you were the one staring at me." She grinned.
"Am I not allowed to stare at my beautiful girlfriend?" He asked. A deep blush instantly flooded Mai's face.
"I-I am not!"
"You're not what?"
"Beautiful!" Mai quickly tried to make a dash out of the bedroom. This was embarrassing...and she's had enough of it to last a lifetime—and the afterlife. Naru grabbed her around the waist before she could escape. "Let me go..." Mai whined as she tried to wriggle out of his grasp.
"Not a chance, not until you hear what I have to say." Naru said as he clamped his other arm around her. Mai let out a huff but did as told, knowing he wouldn't let her go otherwise. She relaxed in his grip and waited to hear what he was going to come out with. She didn't know why he just couldn't let her leave. He turned her to face him. Then he firmly placed his hands on her hips. "Look at me Mai." He said when he noticed her gaze was elsewhere. Reluctantly she did as told when he gave her a small squeeze as a warning. She looked deep into his eyes.
"Mai, don't ever say that again." He warned. "You are the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on. I have always thought so and I always will." Mai looked away from him again with a slight shake of her head. "Mai! Look at me!" He said firmly.
"Why?" She asked stubbornly.
"Because it's important you see how I feel." He replied. Mai's eyes widened a fraction. She realized that last night she had made Naru listen to her about her feelings for him...so she should do the same for him. She looked back into his eyes. She had to listen to him. She owed him that much. This time Naru looked away from her briefly as he gathered his thoughts.
"There's a lot more girls that are way more beautiful than me..." Mai couldn't help but mumble softly under her breath, not intending Naru to hear. Unfortunately he did though as his eyes hardened. At the tightening grip on her hips, she snapped her eyes back on to her boyfriend. He was not pleased with what she had just said. 'Crap...he heard me...' Mai thought. He was still staring harshly at her and hadn't said a word yet.
"Why do you think that?" He finally asked.
"Well...it's the truth..." She replied awkwardly. She wasn't anything special. She was just...plain.
"No Mai, it isn't." Naru stated vehemently.
"How?" She asked.
"I already told you, because you are the most beautiful girl I ever set eyes on."
"That's a total lie." She laughed a bit, hoping to escape this conversation.
"No, it's not." He said sincerely. How could she even think such a thing? What could he even say to make her believe him?
"Naru, every time we walked outside there's a prettier girl than me." Mai said in disbelief.
"However I have never paid them any attention." He argued. Mai opened her mouth but quickly shut it. "If you have something to say Mai say it." Mai suddenly remembered a few days ago, when they were still switched, that Naru had said before he never noticed any girl oogling at him...Then again he was probably so used to it by now that his brain probably switched off his awareness of it happening. He most likely just expected to be adored for his physical appearance. Mai pressed her lips into a thin line. "Now what are you thinking?" He asked exasperatedly. He really didn't know how to handle this situation. But...somehow it seemed awfully familiar... He let out a sigh as he tried to think. However Mai let out a small laugh, snapping him from his thoughts. His brow creased a little as he was perplexed by this.
"This is basically the same situation as last night, although not nearly as important." Mai smiled to herself, shaking her head.
"How do you mean?"
"You're trying to get me to believe that I'm beautiful... Last night I tried to get you to believe that I do love you." She wrapped her arms around his neck. "We're hopeless." She teased. He wrapped his arms around her waist and gave a wry half-smile.
"You know what this means don't you?"
Mai shook her head a bit. "No, what?"
Naru let out a dramatic sigh."It means we're perfect for each other."
Mai giggled before giving him a quick kiss. "That we are!" He nodded and kissed her back.
With a smile, Mai grabbed his hands after they pulled apart. "Come on, let's go eat breakfast." Naru allowed himself to be tugged through the apartment to the kitchen. He sat down at the table as he watched Mai busy herself in preparing their meal. He always found it so fascinating to watch her. She always walked and did things so elegantly...except when her clutzy side got the better of her and she tripped or spilled things. Naru smirked to himself.
It was a little amusing when that happened though. She wouldn't be Mai if she wasn't clumsy. And sometimes when she tried to patch things up only to make them worse it made her really endearing. Like her recent accident with the tea and the ice cream. Most people would be angry for what she did, but to be honest, he couldn't find it in his heart to feel that towards her. He found it very amusing to see her panic like that, painful but amusing. She sure is going to be a handful... Still, he believed he was up to the challenge.
Before he knew it Mai had already set the food in front of him.
"I hope it's okay. I might've overcooked it slightly." She said nervously.
"I'm sure it's fine." Naru replied as she sat down across from him. No matter what it tasted like, it would always be better than something he would cook. Maybe he should tell her that. His gaze moved upwards on to her. He opened his mouth to tell her what he had just thought. When he did Mai blushed in return. Naru smiled a little before starting to eat. Mai slowly began to eat as well.
"So what's on the agenda today?" She asked between mouthfuls. "Aside from me having to go back to my landlord that is."
"Hmm, I had forgotten about that. I don't want you going there alone." Naru answered, ignoring the main point of the question.
"No, I should go alone. I'll be okay." She assured. Naru frowned. "Please Naru. The reason he wouldn't speak to me last time was because you came."
"Mai, I don't like him and I don't trust him."
"I've been alone with him lots of times, Naru."
Naru scowled. There shouldn't have been that many times. Even if there were, couldn't she take into account his discomfort of the situation and maybe respect his wishes?
"It won't take any more than an hour to go there and back."
"Mai..." He started. How could he get it through to her that he didn't want her doing this and make her listen and do as he asked? He shook his head and sighed before pushing his breakfast away. He then got up from the table and went to go get ready for the day. Maybe the tasks of washing and dressing would soothe him a little and bring clarity to his mind on what to do. He left before Mai could say anything. She didn't know whether to go after him or let him be for a while. She just decided to go with the latter—she didn't want to fight with him. She continued to eat her breakfast. She just hoped Naru wasn't mad...or too mad. She knew why he'd stormed off. She just wished he'd understand why she didn't want him to go. It seemed they were at an impasse.
Mai sighed as she finished eating. Hopefully Naru would be finished with getting washed and dressed by now and she could do the same in peace. She made her way to the bedroom to see for herself. It was empty. That means he was still in the bathroom...
She decided to take the opportunity to gather some clothes. Waiting five more minutes, Naru finally appeared back in the bedroom. Mai passed him and went towards the bathroom. When she came back dressed and all, she saw that Naru was still there, just sitting on the bed. He looked sad. Wordlessly, Mai sat on the bed beside him. She let out a sigh.
"Naru..."
"Don't Mai, just don't."
"No." Mai snapped. "I want you to tell me the exact reason you don't want me to go alone when I've already said I have done it lots of times in the past." He glared at her. Mai raised a brow. She wasn't going to back away from this. Naru couldn't explain his feelings as he didn't know how, he just knew deep down he didn't want her anywhere near her creepy landlord alone.
He watched as Mai let out a breath and flopped down on the bed, making them bounce a bit as she did. She stared up at the ceiling. He carefully lay down next to her. He thought about what he needed to say. The words in his head just didn't sound right or very convincing though. So what was he supposed to say to fix this? He really did doubt 'your landlord is creepy and I don't want you near him alone' was going to do much to persuade her even if it was the truth. She would just shrug it off again. One day that kind of attitude would get her in irreversible trouble, he just knew it. He heard Mai sigh again.
"What if you come with me, but you just stay in the car?" She compromised.
"What if I go all the way with you but I don't say anything?" Naru bargained back hopefully. Mai made a face. She was sure that if her landlord saw Naru again then things would just get really bad.
"You stand outside the door and wait for me."
"Will the door stay open?" He asked.
"Cracked open."
"Not good enough, no deal."
"Naaaaruuuu!" She whined. "Come on! You'll be able to hear everything we're saying!" He refused to budge on the issue though and turned away from her. Mai huffed. Why was it so important to him anyway? "If my landlord even sees you I know he's not going to listen to me again. That's why you have to stay out of his sight." Naru frowned even though Mai couldn't see it as he was still turned away from her. "If you can't agree to that, then I'm just going to have to go without you. I have to get this done today, Naru." Naru was becoming more angry at her words and he clenched his jaw in an effort to not say something stupid. He felt the bed move and he knew Mai sat up. He didn't do or say anything. He couldn't. Mai already refused to understand.
"I know you got a bad first impression of him, Naru. He may be a horrible landlord, but it's not like he's going to do anything to me." Mai sighed as she stood up. Naru's hand shot out and grabbed her wrist. He'd had enough of listening to her stupidity. He got up from the bed and drew up to his full height, towering over her. Startled, Mai's eyes widened and she tried to break away from his grasp. His grip was too firm and she was unable to though.
"Let me go." She said, struggling to wiggle her wrist out of his hand. It was rather tight. He refused and continued to just hold on. "Naru!" She finally looked at him and stopped struggling due to the look in his eyes. The words of worry he hadn't been able to express verbally were clearly visible to her in the way he looked at her. Her eyes widened a fraction. Was he really that concerned? Why though? There wasn't anything to be concerned about! At least she didn't think so anyway. But apparently it seemed like a big deal to Naru. She bit her lip, not knowing what to do. Naru wouldn't agree to her terms, but she couldn't let her landlord see him neither. She was stuck on ideas.
"Naru..." She whispered. He didn't say anything but there was a slight shift in his gaze indicating she had his attention. She had a feeling that if she told him to accept her terms then he'd completely shut her out. She opened her mouth to continue then shut it again. She really didn't know what to say. She didn't want to have an argument over it either. Mai sighed. It seemed they wouldn't be able to agree to compromise on this. "I don't know what to say to you..." She admitted.
"Nor I you." Naru quietly replied after a moment. Mai let out a breath.
"It...doesn't have to be done now...but sometime today..." She said. Naru nodded grimly. "Anyways, you never did answer me." She continued.
"About...?" Naru prompted.
"What you had planned for today."
"Work." He answered. Mai blinked.
"So we're finally going to the office today?" She asked. Naru nodded. Mai smiled and nodded also.
"Good. Who knows what Yasu did with my stuff while I was gone?" The last part came out in distaste and annoyance. Then again if he had messed with her stuff she would mess with his. She smirked to herself. Naru began to lead her from the room. "Eh? Where are we going?"
"To work." Naru said in a 'duh' tone.
"O-Oh right." She stumbled as Naru continued dragging her to the front door. They paused to put on their shoes before Naru grabbed her hand again. "Could you slow down a bit, Naru? I can't walk as fast as you." She panted slightly. He slowed his pace so she could keep up. He hadn't realized he had been walking so fast. He loosened the grip on her hand a little bit too, just in case he hadn't realized he was also holding it too tightly.
He knew he was angry but he thought he had learned to control himself and here he found out he wasn't doing such a good job of it after all. He couldn't let his foolishness injure Mai. He would have to deal with their issue a little later though. Right now he would just focus on getting to the office and then working. Work solved everything. He needed to get back into his regular routine. He would feel better then he was sure.
Since it was a ten minute walk to the office, they were there in no time at all. His car was parked in the lot next to the office all nice and shiny. Mai blinked in surprise as they walked up to it.
"That wasn't here yesterday..." Mai started. Naru shrugged.
"It must've just gotten back from wherever Lin took it." He replied. Mai looked inside of it through the window.
"Wow, it doesn't even look like anything happened to it!"
"Good thing too or I would have to sell it." Mai laughed. Naru raised an eyebrow at her. The brunette still had her face pressed against the window to see it though. "Mai, I don't really want an imprint of your face on my rear window." He said. Mai removed her face from it and stuck her tongue out at him. "Childish. Very childish." Mai grinned at him. He shook his head and gave a small, amused smile.
"Come on." Mai tugged him along into the building and to the SPR office. Luckily right now it was empty except for the clacking of computer keys coming from Lin's office. Mai inwardly smiled to herself. She wondered if Lin ever got his laptop back to the way it was after she and Naru messed with it. She shook her head and went towards the kitchen before Naru had the chance to tell her. 'Back into the same routine as always.' She thought. '...But I guess now I won't be late since we're living together now.' She couldn't help but grin at the thought. A week ago, if someone had told her she'd be living with Naru, she would've laughed. She would've told them they were either dreaming or screwing with her. But now, here they were together and living with each other. It made her feel warm and fuzzy inside.
As soon as the tea was made she went to Naru's office and gave it to him. He was too deeply engrossed in his computer to notice though. Mai mentally sighed, not bothering to wait for the thank you that would never come anyways, before she walked back to her desk. She cast an eye over her desk to see if anything was amiss. If she noticed anything missing and or misplaced, Yasu was going to get it. And if he messed up her filing system, he was dead.
So far she hadn't seen anything wrong. She went to the filing cabinet to check in there. Everything still looked to be in order there too. Placing her hands on her hips, Mai gave a nod of satisfaction. There would be no killing Yasu today which meant her hands would remain blood free. And there'd be no spending the night in a jail cell. Yay! She began to dance happily around the office. 'It seems you're wise after all, Yasu!'
She finally calmed herself and sat at her desk. Now, what to do, what to do? She couldn't see anything in her in-tray meaning there wasn't any work for her to do. Yasu must have done it all... It seemed very unlike him. Although Lin must have told him that she was 'sick' and that's why she wasn't there...so maybe he did it to help her out for when she came back. That would be sweet of him if he did. He must have though because all of the work is gone. She tapped her fingers in her desk as she tried to think of something to do.
Ah! Maybe she could clean the office! She went into the kitchen again. Everything was spotless. Mai's mouth gaped open in disbelief. Yasu had really pulled out all the stops. She wasn't sure whether to kill him for leaving her bored to death, or thank him for being so thoughtful. She went back to her desk and let out a sigh as she flopped in her desk chair again. She stretched her arms across the desk and rested her head on them.
"Bored. So bored." She groaned. She let out a desperate whine. She didn't notice Naru had come to the door of his office.
"Is something the matter Mai?" He asked. Startled, Mai jumped and smacked her knee on her desk before falling off her chair which rolled innocuously away from her.
"Oww!" Mai hissed, cradling the area where the pain was. "That hurt!" Naru sighed and shook his head before walking over to her.
"Idiot. We've only been here for fifteen minutes and you already get injured?"
"What? Fifteen minutes? It feels like fifteen hours!" She wailed. Naru raised an eyebrow at her. She pouted as she continued to cradle her knee. It had a bad scrape on it, and she was sure it'd turn into a bruise soon. Naru offered a hand to help her up. With the pout still on her face, she took his hand and let him pull her up.
"Now, what exactly is the problem?" Naru asked again.
"Yasu's the problem! He did everything, now there's nothing left for me to do!" Naru thought for a moment. Maybe he could come up with something for her to do. Ah, but what? He thought harder. She could probably clean his office...
"My office requires cleaning..." He started. Before he'd finished his sentence Mai was off towards it. Shaking his head again, Naru followed her back into his office. She was busy rolling her sleeves up as she prepared for whatever it was Naru wanted her to do.
"Alright, so?" Mai smiled gesturing to his office space.
"The shelves need dusting to start." He said.
"Okay!" She exclaimed. Naru raised a brow. She seemed awfully happy to be cleaning. Normally she would grumble about it for ten minutes then slouch off to get cleaning supplies before returning and continuing to grumble as she did her task. She must have been extremely bored... He couldn't help but smirk. He went and sat back down at his desk as Mai got to work. He somehow found himself staring more at her than at his computer screen. It was just so interesting and amusing to watch her. Oblivious to him watching, Mai quietly hummed to herself, swaying her hips slightly. Gradually her humming and swaying became all out singing and dancing with her can of polish being used as an impromptu microphone. Naru had to hide his half-smirk half-smile behind his hand.
"...And we're gonna polish his shelves 'til they shine, yes we are!" She sang as she scrubbed at a shelf with her duster in one hand and brandished her makeshift mike with the other. "Then maybe he'll give me a kiss." Naru raised an amused brow at that. "If he tries anything funny we'll kick him in the..."
"Mai!" Naru was shocked. Mai twirled around and blinked at him owlishly.
"What?" She asked innocently. Naru gave her a small glare. "What?!" She asked again.
"You know what." He muttered.
"No I don't." She frowned.
"That little...song of yours." He simply supplied.
"Hmm? What about it? I was just singing random stuff." Naru sighed before shaking his head. He could feel a headache coming on.
"Nothing." He said as he rubbed his forehead. "Just finish cleaning." Was all he said before he forced himself to focus on his work. Mai shrugged and did as she was told.
"Poor Naru doesn't feel well...uh-huh, uh-huh. I'm gonna make him some tea once I finish these shelves." She continued to sing, albeit at a slightly lower volume. After twenty minutes and ten little songs later, Mai was finally done cleaning the said shelves. Naru was secretly impressed at how many different songs she could make up. True to her word though, Mai went to make him the tea she promised. Naru was inwardly overjoyed when she brought the steaming cup in and placed it next to him. "Alright, so now what?" She asked cheerfully as he took a sip of the tea. He looked thoughtful for a few moments as he continued to drink.
"Organize my books." He replied, gesturing to all of the books he had all over the office. Again Mai smiled before getting to work. She gathered a few books in her arms before walking towards his bookshelves. She began placing them. She repeated this action until they were all put away. She saw Naru's cup was empty and decided to go refill it again. Naru gave her a smile when she did. He delicately sipped it after she gave it to him. Mai bit her lip, glancing at the clock on the wall. Naru did so too. He shifted his gaze back to his girlfriend before letting out a sigh. He knew what she was thinking. They still hadn't talked that problem out. He was definitely not going to let her go alone into that guy's apartment but she refused to allow him to accompany her inside. They were at a huge disagreement here.
He didn't know what he could do in order to satisfy both of them. Well...honestly there wasn't anything that could. They were at opposite ends here so one of them would have to agree with the other for something to happen. He was determined that it wouldn't be him though. Mai may not believe him but he just knew she shouldn't be left alone with that guy. A little voice kept reminding him that she has gone over there a few times before without him though. He scowled. That was before he was there to protect her though, this is now. Besides he feared that her announcing her intentions to leave that apartment may spur the landlord into action and he would seize the chance to do something to her if she were alone.
"What are we supposed to do, Naru?" Mai asked softly. Naru sighed and shook his head.
"I don't know, but I'm not letting you go in there by yourself." He replied sternly.
"Well you're not coming in with me."
"Mai." He pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. "Do you even have to go there? Can't you just call him?" She blinked a few times as she thought about it. She didn't really see a reason why she couldn't. "I...I didn't think about that. It's a good idea." She told Naru. "I'll go do that now..." She said before scurrying out of his office. He decided, just in case, to watch her carefully. It's not that he didn't trust her...but still, he just wanted to make sure the conversation didn't get out of hand. He saw her sit at her desk and pick up the phone then dial a number. She waited several moments before she spoke.
"I just wanted to tell you I'm moving out." Naru heard her declare. Then he heard a sigh. "Yes, I know—I'll pay you this month's rent." She paused and listened a moment. "Yes, I'm aware it's sudden...There wasn't anything like that in the contract I signed...I can't afford another three months on the top...You're not being fair..." Naru furrowed his eyebrows as he listened.
"I don't care if it's because I defaulted on the contract...But you can't do that...No, I'm not going to meet you face to face to discuss this...What other arrangement could possibly be made other than giving you money?!...N-no, that's unacceptable, I won't...I can't pay you the money...I...But...N-no..." Naru narrowed his eyes in growing anger. Just what was that landlord saying to her?!
"No, I refuse...Please don't...But...No...I-I'll get you the money...What do you mean you've changed your mind and want what you proposed instead?...You can't, it's wrong...Please don't make me..." Okay, that was it! He had to know what that man was saying. He stalked over to where Mai was. She looked at him with wide eyes when he stopped in front of her. He held out his hand for the phone."W-What? Naru, no..." She whispered. He stuck his hand out more insistently. In return Mai pulled the phone to her chest.
"Mai." He warned. She shook her head.
"I'm talking, Naru." She replied. Naru narrowed his eyes. Why wouldn't she give him the phone? He could tell what was being said was distressing her. She put the phone back to her ear when both of them heard yelling coming from the other end. "I...I...Yes...I'm sorry..." She said to the person on the other end. "I...W-what?...No, you can't do tha..." Naru reached over to try and grab the phone. He just about had it in his hands before Mai pulled away from him. Naru then suddenly had an idea and hit the speaker-phone button allowing Mai's landlord's voice to be heard by all.
"Now listen here Little Girl..." Naru heard. "...You will repay me with your body or I will take you to court for breaking your lease, understand?" Mai winced at the murderous look on her boyfriend's face. This is why she didn't want him to hear the conversation... Naru turned his gaze to her, asking with his eyes if this was what the discussion had been. She immediately looked down at her lap and began to fumble her thumbs around. But nonetheless, she gave a small nod.
Naru clenched his fists. He was growing angrier by the minute while that landlord was still yapping away. Mai felt miserable. Why did she have to have a landlord like this? Sure it was the first time he'd gone this far but still, why her? Why not be crude to someone else? She let out a sigh. She glanced up at Naru, who looked to be about to explode.
"I seriously recommend not saying another word." She warned.
"What did you say?!" Her landlord seethed.
"Don't say anything else..." Mai replied nervously. She honestly didn't know who to be more afraid of at the moment. Her landlord, who was threatening to sexually harass her, or her boyfriend, who was growing more livid—despite his anger not being directed at her.
"Listen to me..." Her landlord's voice boomed out through the phone. "You're going to get your ass down here right now or else."
"Or...um...or else what?" Mai asked. Her landlord gave a throaty chuckle. It wasn't a nice sound. It made Mai shiver in disgust. She unconsciously backed away from the phone. She didn't want to see that man again...
