Today is the darkest day of the year.
On this, the winter solstice, Gondorians spend time inside with their families. The darkness gives them a chance to huddle around a cozy fire, celebrating the winter and eating hearty winter meals. The solstice is somewhat of a holiday here; little work was done today.
I sit by my fire alone, idly stoking the flames. My body is warm, but my heart is cold. My friend Wyn is having a gathering next door, and I can hear happy chatter and laughter. I think she wanted to invite me, but she knew that I am strange to the Gondorians and perhaps would not be welcome.
Although maybe I am wrong. Maybe she too thinks me strange, and is glad of my absence.
It's so dark outside, Kili. It feels as though night has fallen on the world forever. Who knows for sure if the sun will come up tomorrow?
Wish you were here,
Tauriel.
