JJ groaned as she was woken up by the shrill ringing of her phone.
"Jareau." She mumbled into the phone as she answered the call.
"It's just me JJ." Hotch greeted. "I just wanted to let you know that Strauss has given you 2 weeks off to recover from your injuries." Hotch told the blonde agent.
JJ rolled her eyes. "But-"
"And it wasn't a suggestion, it was an order." Hotch said, letting out a rare chuckle.
"Fine." JJ huffed with annoyance down the phone, half serious, half playful. "Does that mean I can go back to sleep now?" JJ teased her boss.
Hotch laughed softly. "I'll see you later JJ."
"Bye." JJ said ending the call that had put an unexpected smile on her face.
The next phone call came later in the day.
"Jareau." JJ answered once again.
"Hey." The voice said warmly on the other end of the phone.
"James?" JJ wondered, the pitch of her voice became slightly higher due to her surprise. She winced internally when she realised she had forgot to say goodbye to him amongst all the chaos.
"You too good for goodbyes now?" James said but his voice was teasing.
"Yeah, sorry about that. Everything just got pretty crazy. It just slipped my mind." JJ explained truthfully.
"It's alright." James said dismissing her apology. "Just thought I'd call, wish you good luck with everything." he said genuinely, knowing they might not see each other again.
" Ditto." JJ said simply in reply. "I'll see you around James." JJ finished, knowing that the possibility of that happening was pretty slim.
"See you later." James said with a smile down the phone before the call ended.
JJ didn't do much for the rest of the day, surprisingly; she actually enjoyed just having the day off to relax. She played video games most of the day, a secret nerdy hobby of hers.
JJ was just about to get started on dinner but was stopped in her tracks by a knock at the door. JJ pulled her gun out from her draw in the hallway, before opening the front door somewhat cautiously.
"Hotch?" JJ asked, her voice full of surprise, her eyes a little wider than before.
"I brought food." Hotch offered, holding up a bag of Chinese takeout, smiling sheepishly at his fellow profiler.
JJ grinned. "Come on in then." She said cheekily, opening the door wider.
Hotch raised his eyebrow in a questioning manner when he spotted the gun in JJ's hand.
JJ shrugged. "You can never be too careful." She said putting the gun safely back in the drawer. The truth was, everything that had happened had put her more on edge than she normally was.
JJ led Hotch through to the lounge. She was suddenly aware of how she was dressed; a pair of sweats and a basketball top, topped off with fairly messy hair.
"Bit of a gamer are we?" Hotch teased her with a smirk when he spotted the PS4 in the corner of the room.
JJ blushed a little. "Shut it Hotchner." She said back to him, giving him a playful punch on the arm as they sat on the sofa. "What did you get me?" JJ asked eagerly as she eyed the food in front of her, she was starving.
"Your favourite of course." Hotch said, pulling a tub of chow mein out of the bag, laughing at the way JJ's eyes lit up.
It didn't take them long to eat, and soon they were both relaxing back on the sofa, making light conversation.
"How did you get my address anyway? Are you stalking me?" JJ asked with an amused smirk.
"I'm an FBI agent JJ." Hotch answered matter-of-factly.
"Garcia?" JJ asked knowingly.
"Yeah." Hotch admitted, causing them both to laugh.
"I could have had plans you know." JJ stated, deciding to tease him further.
Hotch frowns a little, taking JJ's words more seriously than she intended. "Did you?" he wondered.
JJ chuckled. "Does it look like it?" JJ asked rhetorically, waving her hand, gesturing to her appearances and injuries. "For starters I look like crap." JJ laughed.
"I think you look great." Hotch replied almost immediately, making them both blush slightly.
"Thanks." JJ replied, with a small, shy smirk. JJ can't stop herself from shifting uncomfortably; the laughter had caused some pain in her shoulder from where she was shot by Slovak.
Hotch eyed her suspiciously, he knew that a sprained arm would have healed by now, thinking about the earlier story JJ and Garcia had told everyone.
"That arm still bothering you?" Hotch asked her, with narrowed eyes.
"Uh-yeah, a bit." JJ replied, hoping he wouldn't go any further.
"Don't bullshit me JJ." Hotch said, a sternness to his voice.
"Ok fine." JJ relented. "I didn't sprain my arm." She began her admission. "I was shot." JJ said.
It was a shock for Hotch to hear but he wasn't all that surprised. "What about Garcia?" Hotch asked and JJ explained the situation to him and how Garcia had gotten involved, which she still felt pretty shit about.
"How did it happen?" Hotch questioned with concern, but JJ could see the underlying hurt beneath his façade that she hadn't told him.
JJ gave him a knowing yet apologetic look. "You know I can't tell you." She said, genuinely sorry.
Hotch nodded reluctantly in understanding. "You're ok though?" Hotch asked, again with concern and JJ appreciated that it was concern and not pity.
"Yeah." JJ answered. "It should start healing properly now, I think everything from the last few days just kept aggravating it." JJ explained, it had felt a lot better today just from the fact she had rested.
"Good." Hotch replied. "So how about a game?" Hotch said suddenly changing the subject, as he nodded his head towards the PS4. "I can't wait to beat you." Hotch teased with a confident smirk as he reached for the controllers.
"Oh, it's on Hotchner." JJ said with a grin.
