Max did not come to see me that night. He phoned to say that he had Been held back at work, due to the case. Apparently the man who shot me killed him self. After four years of marriage, Max never put work in front of me when I needed him. Never in front of our wedding anniversary.
I guess I should forgive him though. God knows what it must have been like for him to sit by my bed day in day out, not knowing if I would live and die. And to be truthful I was kind of glad he didn't come as I was still felling lousy. I still had that emptiness and longing for what could never have been. And that hurt . the loss I never knew I had.
My husband arrived later though with yet another huge bunch of roses. Planting a kiss on my head, he apologised for earlier and told me that I could be coming home.
"God knows how long I have waited for this day, you are never leaving my sight" he told me
"Easier said than done with out telling the whole station the truth."
"Ohh that!, well they kind of all ready know, with me being down as your next of kin," he lent over and kissed me on the lips for the first time since I woke from the coma.
With that the doctor came in to my room with my discharge papers and then it was the slow walk to the car.
"you had to come in that car didn't you?" I asked max, looking at his two door sports car. I slowly eased my self in to the passenger seat.
"I hope you will be able to get me out of the car when we get home?"
He just smiled and sped off towards our home on the outskirts of Canlly.
4 months after the shooting.
Sat at home all day for 4 months has really messed with my brain, and I could not wait to get back to the job I loved. And as I entered the station with max by my side as the was no point hiding that we were married. From around me I could hear Woolf whistles from various people and welcome backs. Just as I passed his office on my way to the changing room, inspector smith called me In to the off.
"welcome back PC brown or is it carter?"
"it brown sir. We agreed when we married I would keep my maiden name for work."
"Right. Any how you are on light duties today,"
"SIR"
I walked out of the office and get my uniform on and make my way to the front office where I was on desk duty.
