Denial

They knew what Anne wanted, but they knew from experience and she refused to listen. They lost their parents to demons too. She wasn't the first and she won't be the last. Summoning Crowley to get her mother out of Hell was asking for trouble. The best they could do was to summon Crowley first and get him to release the souls that were meant for Heaven.

That's the part Anne didn't want to hear. Sam and Dean couldn't even get to the bottom line before Gadreel glared at them and shielded her. It'd be better to save many souls than just one, even if the one means the world to you. The Winchesters knew that all too well and Gadreel wasn't letting them break it to Anne.

When she was gone to rest, Sam and Dean waited for a few seconds and exchanged glances.

"How are we going to summon Crowley? We tried everything." Sam said and Dean looked down at all the books opened, spread out on the table before him.

"I'm sure he'll drop in eventually." Dean said and Sam snorted, getting Dean's attention. "What?" he asked him. "Want to summon your friend Nikolai instead?" he asked and Sam shot him a glare.

"Crowley has everything he wants. We're useless to him." Sam said after a few silent seconds and then Dean nodded.

"Way to stay positive." Dean said sarcastically and glanced back at all the books in front of him. At that moment, it sort of felt like the books were mocking him; being a Men of Letters Legacy, he should be able to get a hold of any demon, at any time, yet he couldn't summon the King of Hell.

"Did you try calling Cas?" Sam asked and Dean shot a cold stare at his brother.

"Like a million times. He's just as bad as Crowley." Dean said. "He's here when you don't need him and when you do, you can't reach him." He added and then fell silent. "If Heaven wants those souls, why aren't they doing it?" he asked. "How do we always get dragged into these things?" he added. Sam stared at his brother with an arched eyebrow and snorted again.

"That's because we're actually supposed to be helping Anne, remember? Get her mom back." Sam said. "Then you decided to get the other souls back." he added and watched as his brother remained silent for a brief moment.

"Hate to break it to the kid, but saving countless souls is better worth our time than one. Crowley knows it's personal and he'll never let her go." Dean said and Sam nodded his head silently. He didn't disagree with his brother, but he felt bad for Anne. He knew what it was like wanting to free someone from Hell and not being able to. He knew that all too well.

At that moment, a voice pierced through the silence, stunning the brothers.

"You don't intend on helping her." Gadreel said with a hint of a question to his statement. His eyes were cold and just as piercing as his voice. His jaw was clenched tightly and it was obvious that he was trying to calm his anger.

"Listen, it's easier to save –" Dean began, trying not to let his blunt belief falter, but Gadreel cut him off.

"Easier?" he asked, anger rising in his voice. "Is that a hunter's job? Find the easy way out?" he asked, letting his anger show through his tone of voice.

"It's never easy to sacrifice, but –" Sam began, but Gadreel's angry eyes shot towards him, making him stop mid-way in his sentence.

"Do not speak of sacrifice." Gadreel said, his voice grave. His eyebrows were knitted together in a deep frown, sharpening the intense rage in his eyes. Sam knew he had said the wrong thing. "You use the word without a profound knowledge of it." he added.

The Winchesters exchanged glances and looked back at Gadreel. If anything, they met their match in the subject of sacrifices. They were going to have a difficult time in getting Gadreel to see their point of view.

"You of all should understand. You said it yourself that –" Dean began, but Gadreel couldn't take it anymore.

"You dare reference me?" he asked, his voice deep with rage.

"You –" Dean began, attempting to convince Gadreel again, however, he was in no mood to be convinced, not even to listen.

"You don't know what it was to see Anne fall to the floor, crying and shaking when she discovered her mother's body. You don't know how I had to carry her like she was lifeless, how I tried so hard to get her out of her depression. You don't know how I struggled to get her back. Now, part of her has returned, but I can't stop trying.

"I am now a man. I cannot save mankind like I once wished I could. I can only help so many and since my resurrection, it's clear that the one I was meant to help is Anne. She's the only I can help. She needs me more than ever now and I will not lose her again, not for all the souls destined for Heaven.

"I will do whatever it takes to heal her broken heart and you are fools if you think I'll let you hurt her. If Anne hears of this, it will kill her. She trusted you and you've let her down." Gadreel concluded, maintaining his rage, but not being able to hide the sadness within.

Sam and Dean remained silent for some time, shifting under the heavy and awkward silence.

"She came to you for help. Do not disappoint her, or you'll have me to deal with." Gadreel said, once again with that frown, emphasizing the rage in his eyes. It served as a warning before he turned and walked away, leaving the Winchesters contemplating in their silence.

Then again, they disappointed so many despite their efforts to save as many lives as they could. What's a couple more? Hunting was never easy and it always required sacrifices. Welcome to their life. Sometimes, there was nothing one could do to save the ones they loved.

That was what Anne didn't want to hear.
