Chapter 7: While I am Alone

Morning came far too early as far as I am concerned. I felt cramped, but fought back the idea of stretching just in case I hurt my stomach. Compared to yesterday, I could move with far more speed than I had imagined. Hopping up from the bed, I made towards the door, hoping that Hei would be at the kitchen just like he always had done so he could make some breakfast for me. I am never a fan of cooking, to make my own breakfast is to torture my own stomach, which I think whom needs a rest from the resent injuries.

As I approached the kitchen however, Hei was nowhere to be seen, he probably went out somewhere. Frowning slightly at the fact that he didn't wake me or even left a note to tell me where he was, I rummaged around the kitchen, trying to find something that would satisfy my growling stomach. I am getting the habit of eating too much, I thought as I sat on the floor with bread and a glass of milk. Probably the influence of Hei.

Hei set out early in the morning, trying not to wake up the still sleeping Ying. He met the landlady on the way down the steps.

"Ohio Li kun" She said with a broom held in her hand.

"Ohio" Hei said, immediately swapping on his Li persona.

"Out so early eh? Where is Xing?" The landlady inquired.

Hei was about to answer but suddenly a black cat sprang around the corner and landed on Hei's head.

"It's you again?!" The landlady exploded and started whacking her broom at Mao furiously. Mao scrambled about and before another desperate attempt to get away, looked back at Hei with a meaningful stare. As he disappeared, Hei bid the landlady farewell and made his way to where Mao had left.

"What's wrong?" Hei asked as soon as he had caught up with Mao.

"Change of plan, you are to tail the person with the pendant and tail him to their hideout. Kill him and grab the thing afterwards." Mao quickly informed him.

"Okay, tell me the place." Hei nodded and replied.

"Follow Yin's spectre, she will guide you. And Hei, don't lower your guard, its harder to conceal yourself while in the day."

Hei jammed the ear piece into his ear, "Yin, can you hear me?"

Yin's soft voice came from the other end "Run 450 metres along this road."

Hei did so and drew his black trench coat out from his pocket and put it on. Yin's spectre was not far from where he was in a puddle, gazing at him with those hollow eyes.

After a few minutes of winding about, Hei found his target. Quickly hiding behind a building, he watched as his quarry had a brief conversation with another. Hei could easily dispose of the two and grab this pendant and finish the mission. However, he musn't do so, yet. The target moved onwards and Hei followed. He seemed to be looking back quite often, wanting to make sure no one was following him. Once or twice, he would gaze at the place where Hei was hiding, but simply turned back with a expression of confusion. Finally, they reached an ancient manor. The door was heavily built and the whole place looked millions of years old. The windows were boarded up, even the chimney had a large piece of material draped over it.

"Yin, inform Huang and Mao about this place. I am going in to get the pendant." Hei whispered and put on his Kuro no Shinigami mask.

"Hai" Came Yin's voice and Hei saw her spectre appear in a nearby water barrel.

The man had disappeared into the mansion, leaving the door slightly ajar. Hei leaned on the door and peered inside, nothing seemed to be stirring.
He entered.

Hei moved towards the centre of the room to which the pendant was lying on a velvet cushion concealed in a glass case. Holding his knife firmly, he hovered it over the case, and brought it down with a deafening crash. The glass shattered instantly and lay motionless on the dusty floorboards. Easy enough, Hei thought as he acquired the pendant and put it in his pocket. As he turned around to face the door, he found that it was shut tight. Or maybe not, the thought drifted across Hei's mind as he drew his knife out once more and readied himself.

At first, nothing moved. All was quiet. Then, suddenly,

Hei spun around as something stirred. The shattered remains of the glass case was floating inches in the air. As if on cue, the glass shards all turned and shot at Hei. Immediately, he dodged and swerved around the deserted room, all the while looking about for the contractor.

"As expected of Kuro no Shinigami." Came a voice. The man had reappeared, clapping his hands as he slowly became illuminated in the dim light.

Hei straightened, staring up at the speaker through the black slits in his mask.

"Don't worry, there's only me here. No doubt, you would have made sure of that even if there were others. No, today we are not united to fight, I wish to make a deal."

Although Hei couldn't really care less about what the man had to say, he went with the flow. Nodding as a gesture to carry on, Hei inched closer to him, waiting for the chance.

"Finally listening now are we. Well, that pendant you have there actually belongs to the first contractor who ever appeared, who is said to be dead. Before he died, he somehow managed to let it acquire some of his power. But contractors are only meant to have one power, which means whoever is able to use that pendant to get a second one, could change the world completely. However, not all contractors seem to have the ability to withstand whatever is inside. Which is why I need you and KS917 to test it out."

When the man finally finished his awfully boring speech, Hei pretended to ponder the deal and then walked forwards, holding out his hand in attempt for a handshake. The man smiled, completely lowering his guard and came down to grasp his gloved hand.

"I knew it, a rational contractor like you would know what is good for you. So whe..."

A blue aura surrounded Hei as he sent the man into Hell. Really, willing to come in physical contact with the most feared contractor is really the last thing you would want to do, especially if you are a contractor who is supposed to think "properly".

Hei trudged out of the mansion and met Huang.

"What took you so long?" He asked irritated and took a huff of smoke.

"Nothing, just listening to some interesting tales." Hei replied as he handed Huang the pendant.

"I don't see why the syndicate would want something as plain as this." Huang said with no interest as he flipped the item in his hand.

"Hei, tomorrow you got a day off so you might as well..." Huang turned back to face Hei but he was already gone.

"Contractors." Huang spat as he too moved off towards the direction of his car.

xxx The mansion 30 minutes later...xx

The corpse lay in the centre of the room, looking as though it was merely drifting off into sleep. Misaki sighed as she knew that this was another unfortunate victim who tasted BK201's powers. Kanami had informed her that BK201 and OW804 were active in this mansion. BK201 had obviously electrocuted OW804. This puts my suspicions to an end, Misaki thought. KS917 hadn't been active in a while, and while BK201 was today, her star had just been lost in the nameless cluster of twinkling orbs in the sky. That's a comforting thought, at least you wouldn't worry about having to mass murderers on your back.

Although having either one was already the worst of your luck.

Hei appeared as a normal person on the streets of Tokyo, heading back to Misuzu to check on Ying. He smiled to himself, she doesn't need checking on. Just as he was about to turn a corner, he spotted a girl wearing a black and purple striped scarf even though it was summer. She had her back to him, but he knew too well that this girl, who looked like she was having a hard time deciding what cake to eat, was just the person he sought. Although he could complete missions perfectly on his own, he missed Ying having his back. As Hei made his way towards her, he knew that if alone, they would fall. But if the two were together, they would stand.

While I am alone, my back is exposed. I feel hopeless without you.
