Chapter 8: Another Unexpected Event

A few weeks have passed since I recovered from my injuries. Since then, I have been going on missions again with Hei. Nothing really happened, everything had gone according to plan, which was fine but not really interesting either. Tonight Hei and I were to retrieve another sort of good that was supposed to be driving contractors crazy. Apparently, it was something that made one invincible by giving them another contract. I sighed at the thought, why would you want another contract? Doesn't that mean you have to double your remuneration?

So here we were, sitting in the childrens playground again, listening to Huang go over the mission details.

"Tonight you two are to wait on the roof of the building at this address and wait for our contact to come. You are to take the whatever thing it is and then kill him."

"If its just to take something and kill them afterwards, why do you need both of us?" I asked.

"It is said that he might bring contractors with him as well, so just to be safe you two are to go together, Ms. Complaint."

I gave Huang the evil eye, Hei nodded and the two of us left the playground.

" Hei, what do you think the thing is? Does it really give someone another power or is it just a joke?"

Hei looked at me doubtfully, but said "When you were still injured, a mission brought me to a mansion. The target told me something about a pendant the first ever contractor had. He put his own power in it or something."

"Sounds like a prank" I replied with a shrug.

So here we are, waiting on the roof for this person to arrive. I was growing rather impatient since it was already 10 minutes past the meeting time and it was raining. Luckily Hei had brought an umbrella. We huddled together, still wondering whether he would come or not.

The door to the roof opened. Finally, our target.

"Are you the one with the item?" I asked, somewhat cautiously.

"Yes" The man said, not daring to lift his head.

"Hand it over." I said and walked over to him with my hand out stretched. The man reached for something in his pocket and placed it in my hand. It was a floating orb, shining radiantly in my palm. I examined it, then said "Thank you. Your work here is finished." And with that, I placed my hand on his shoulder, letting the blue aura highlight the dark night.

"NO!" He screamed and pull back. As if on cue, ten people appeared by his side in an instant. "KILL THEM! KILL THEM!" the man bellowed at his companions.

They rushed towards Hei and I. It was rather difficult, the space on the roof was rather small. Kuro Sakura materialized in my hand and deciding the best tactic, let my power imbue itself onto the scythe. Crouching down, I propelled myself towards the contractors. One raised his hands towards me and a gigantic gust of wind almost blew me over. I rolled over, trying to keep on track. Hei was on the other side, battling with five more contractors. He had swung around using his wire and already electrocuted two of the enemy. A roll of thunder bellowed above in the furious sky. I turned my attention back to my own situation. Getting back up again, I rushed towards the contractor, as each loomed before me, I swung my scythe, catching one by the neck and pulled. His blood spilled on the sopping floor. Intrigued by my success, I was being spurred on to greater heights. One of the enemy ran towards me, a knife held high in the air, only to step into the black hole I had set on the floor as a trap, he disappeared into abyss in an instant.

Suddenly Hei yelled "Ying, jump!"

Feeling slightly bewildered, I smashed Kuro Sakura onto the ground and used it as a poll to push myself into the air, but the orb had fallen out of my pocket. Hei's eyes turn red. A sudden electric shock and the world down below became silent.

The orb didn't fall, it glinted right in front of my eyes. I was suspended in mid air, looks like whatever it was, it wasn't going to let me go. I stood facing it, it glowed yet more brightly and obscured my vision.

Time unfroze.

The roll of thunder came again, but this time I felt the lightening run through me. I screamed, but it seemed so distant, completely unheard. I wonder what happened next? Why do all the funny things happen to me?

Misaki, Saitou, and Kouno burst onto the scene, their guns raised. They have received reports about a great amount of contractor activity on this building tonight, including BK201 and KS917. However, what they saw next was completely out of reality. BK201 was crouched on the floor, staring up at the bright sky. They followed his gaze, only to see a bright sphere slowly falling to the death covered roof. It landed between BK201 and the police. The first to come in view was a pitch black scythe, slightly covered at the handle by a black hooded cloak. A slight movement, the cloth slightly shifted.

BK201 was about to run towards it but Saitou and Kouno quickly blocked his way, guns pointing at him. Kuro no Shinigami was about to make his move but a cat suddenly appeared by his side. He seemed to speak to him, doing almost nothing to change his mind. But suddenly he stopped dead in his tracks. Something had moved him, he grabbed the cat and swung his wire over the railings and dropped out of sight. The police quickly followed, but once again he had escaped.

Misaki slowly approached the twitching figure on the floor, still hidden beneath the black cloak. There was something as well, Misaki noticed as he drew closer. There were a pair of high heels, a black top, and a pleated skirt. As if sensing someone's presence, a small figure looking no older than 10 slowly rose from the pile of clothes, looking so out of place in admits the clothing that was much too big for her.

The girl stared at Misaki with her weary eyes, dazed but nevertheless still conscious. Misaki slowly approached, and crouched down to face her.

"Who are you?" She asked, hoping that her tone wouldn't frighten the child.

The girl still stared, then tilted her head, rather not daring to say anything. Misaki sighed and turned to Saitou and Kouno.

"Saitou, Kouno. Clear up the place, I'll be going first." Misaki quickly ordered.

"But what about the kid?" asked Saitou.

"I'll take her with me first. You can't expect such a small child to recover from that shock of meeting BK201 in such a short time. Don't tell anyone about her presence yet." Misaki replied, eyeing Saitou and Kouno with serious eyes.

"Hai." Both said and walked off to get on with their task.

Half an hour later, Misaki had brought the little child back to her apartment along with the scythe and clothes. She wondered why she took those as well, maybe they seemed like a clue to her. Tomorrow, Misaki thought, is to get proper clothes for this kid. She had draped the girl in one of her tops that simply looked like an oversized dress. Misaki had also tried to get her to speak, but so far nothing had left her mouth.

She still refused to speak, although she did accept the bun Misaki offered her. That at least was some comfort. It was almost eleven, so Misaki set the little girl on her bed and bid her good night. Then she walked outside to sleep on the couch.

She sat, staring out at the bright moon. The rain had stopped, the drops on the window were still glistening.

A single word escaped her little lips. A name that almost meant nothing to her, only something of a distant dream.

"Hei."
