Chapter 10: Yui or Ying

A moonlight shadow moves stealthily outside. The wire wraps itself firmly on the railings, and a figure stands straight in the silver light. A Nightingale sings ever so sweetly, its melody being carried by the wind further and further. He stood still, listening like a lion waiting for its prey, then slowly enters the room beyond. The child lies innocently on the bed, still lost in wistful dreams. The masked man looms overhead, wanting to strike.

The girl stirs, obviously reacting to her surroundings. Yui sits up, still rubbing her eyes, trying to adjust to the dim light. At last, her vision was clear, and she realized she wasn't alone. The figure stood there staring into her. Yui stared back, wondering why she wasn't afraid of the intruder. The man leaned down and slowly held her in his arms. It was familiar, it was finally something that related to that dream.

"Ying" He had said, burying his nose into Yui's black strands of hair.

"Hei" Yui found the name come from her own mouth unconsciously. She had finally found the owner of the name that had lingered in her mind for so long. He let go and stared at her yet again.

"You still remember me?" The muffled noise became clear as he took of his mask. Yui's eyes filled with recognition, but her brain already sent the signal to her head. She shook her head.

The man looked downcast, but then tried something else. "Do you remember the things that were taken with you? Like, a scythe or something?" Yui nodded and said "They're in Misaki's car." The man intensified. He knew that the officer was near, had she done anything to the child in front of him? "Come on" He mouthed and piggybacked the little girl. As he put on his mask, he felt the girl snuggle into his back. Hei couldn't help it as a smile graced his lips.

As he crept out of the bedroom, Hei saw the officer that he was too familiar with sleeping on the couch. She turned over, making him stop dead in his tracks, not wanting to wake up the unwanted trouble. But as he crept towards the door, he heard the words he was so accustomed to.

"Stop, turn around and put your hands in the air!" The voice rang through the silent night. It was then she gasped, realizing that he had Ying on his back.

"Let go of the girl!" She yelled. Hei simply turned his head slightly, giving the officer a long, frightening stare. Then, he disappeared into the night. She rushed outside, catching nothing in sight yet again. Sighing, she returned back into her apartment.

xx The next morning...xx

Hei stared into the innocent face of the small Ying, who was still sleeping on the bench with her head on Hei's lap. After the rescue, Hei had taken himself and Ying back to Misuzu, and she had been sleeping ever since. It was 8 in the morning, and Hei had hauled her onto his back and took off to the childrens playground.

"She doesn't look to bad, at least she's still alive." Mao said when he arrived, and he curved himself against Ying.

"How about she stay like this forever? At least she fits her "Tenshi" name more like this." Huang smirked as he loomed over the sleeping figure.

"Kawaii" Yin whispered as she draped white jacket over Ying. Hei smiled at her, at least someone who really cared for Ying.

"Not only has she shrank to half her age, she also lost her memory and powers as well." Hei said to the group.

"Well, we would need to find a way to get them all back. Perhaps try bring her to places where shes been before." Mao suggested, purring and cleaning himself.

Beside him, Ying slowly stirred.

"Hei, where are we?" She asked groggily as she rubbed her eyes and slowly sat up, the white jacket slowly sliding off.

"Hei, she still remembers you?!" Mao asked sounding astounded.

Hei nodded and said "Only the name though, she still forgot everything else."

"Its you again." Ying said as she peered at Mao with her now completely bright eyes.

"Just get on with it, the syndicate needs both of you fast." Huang snarled.

Ying turned her attention to Huang and a expression of purest fear appeared across her face. She grabbed Hei's shirt and hid behind it, only the eyes were visible.

Huang raised an eyebrow and left the scene. Hei smiled as Yin trailed over and patted Ying on the head.

Hei took Ying by the hand and dragged her out of the playground. "Ying, are you hungry?" The girl made no reaction, then said "Is my real name Ying?" Hei nodded. "Yes." He couldn't afford to tell her her real name here in public, what if someone heard? Then again, she was a child now, so there was a chance that no one would recognize her anyways as KS917.

They arrived in front of the cake shop to which Hei knew Ying had always liked. " I want this one, this one , and that one." Ying concluded, and Hei noticed that she had chosen the ones she normally chose. Hei felt happy, perhaps she was still bond to this world and not completely lost. As Hei was paying, Ying looked off to the distance.

"Hei, I see Misaki." Hei spun around, then the thing he had dreaded most happened.

Misaki was in the worst mood ever. Not only had BK201 taken her only means of information, even her car window had been broken, revealing that the pieces of clothing that were supposed to be evidence had disappeared into the night with him. Misaki sighed deeply, wondering how they were going to crack the case now. She was also worried about Yui's safety. No doubt BK201 would want to get rid of her since she was also a witness. But that raised another question. If he had really wanted to kill Yui, why not just do it on the spot while she was still asleep? Not only would she not be able to call for help, and it would save him the time of finding somewhere to dump the corpse. Misaki went out the door, her mind slowly dawdling away from the many questions she had.

She trudged along the busy street, heading to the cake shop for a snack. There, she saw her. The backside of Yui.

Misaki ran fowards, almost tripping over. She caught up and turned the girl around.

There she was, staring at a girl who wore sunglasses over her eyes. Her hair was now half covered as the man beside her dropped a sun hat with a pink ribbon on top on to her head.

"Um, excuse me do you want anything?" The man beside the girl asked.

"No, no I thought she was someone else... Haha.." Misaki chuckled awkwardly.

"Thank goodness, I thought Ying was in trouble again." The man said. "My name is Li Shengshun, nice to meet you. She is my cousin, Ying."

Ying said with a bright smile on her face "Nice to meet you!"

Misaki smiled and in turn introduced herself "My name is Kirihara Misaki."

The three sat talking merrily in a ramen store, each pleasing their empty stomachs as they gobbled down their food. "So you are a police" Li said in between mouthfuls of ramen.

"Hai" Misaki replied and ate a few mouthfuls herself. "I thought Ying was a girl I am looking for."

"She's not a criminal, is she?" Li asked with a slightly concerned expression.

"No, its just that she was kidnapped by a dangerous criminal." Misaki quickly explained.

Li comprehended and nodded.

The three departed in separate directions after they had finished their lunch.

"See ya Misaki!" Ying called after her as Li took her by the hand and led her off.

Misaki turned, waved and smiled back then returned back to her department. How could she have been so sure that Ying was Yui? It felt so stupid. There were many girls around her age in the world, why had she mistook someone else? Still smiling, she went back to work thinking about the amusing excursion she just had.

Hei sighed in relief. Thank goodness Ying's identity wasn't busted, yet. He wondered why that officer, or rather Kirihara san, was always so close to both him and Ying. They were back at Misuzu now, trying to let Ying have a good look at her surroundings to see if she remembered anything. So far no luck.

Hei decided to take Ying on the mission tonight, perhaps it would remind her of the times to which they had spent together fighting for their lives. He left the chaos to the evening. But for now, let him just keep the peace and tell Ying a little bit more of life as a contractor. To be honest, sometimes Hei would think whether staying as a child would work better for Ying. He knew staying human was the best way of obtaining real happiness.

But as he looked at the girl zooming around the apartment, he thought he saw the taller version of her, standing much more maturely, staring at him with a beautiful smile etched in her face. He missed reality, not just the illusion.

Hei was going to get Ying back, no matter what it takes.

To be continued...
