Chapter 12: The Tenshi in Hell

I am walking down a dark alleyway, following a dark glow that loomed around the corner. Even as I approached it, or rather I think I did, it still went further and further away from me. I sped up, wanting to grow level with it, but it still remained in front of the quickly tiring me. I moved along, now in a walk, until I finally saw the light.

There, standing directly in front of me, directly in front of the red moon, was...

Death, the Shinigami himself.

"Follow me, Sendo Erika. I can grant you power that no one as ever dreamed of possessing." The Shinigami turned towards me, his daunting face carved itself deep into my memories. I felt it, the thing I feared the most. Fear.

"I can grant you a wish. Together, we can destroy the world and create a new dawn, to which the black sun will rise over the horizon." he continued.

"Why me? There are lots of contractors who have more power than I do." I questioned the hooded figure, trying to conceal the fear in my voice.

He laughed, a merciful laugh. "Why Sendo Erika you ask? For you are the Fallen Angel, one that I can drag into abyss. " He was drawing closer now, I wanted to turn back, but my feet were rooted to the spot. He stared into my face.

"What if I disagree?" I said defiantly.

"Oh but you won't. I know your desires Sendo Erika, your wishes for the one closest to you to be with you, to stay with you forever. While you continue to defy me, you are corrupting yourself and him." The Shinigami replied with a sneer. Then, he swished is scythe and I felt myself being sucked back, back into what looked like my own black hole.

"My time is short, farewell for now. Consider this as a present for our first meeting. Oh, and just remember that trying to conceal your bloodlust with your own blood won't work anymore." The Shinigami dissolved into darkness as I fell.

"YING!" A voice was calling for me, I voice I knew too well. I snapped out of my trance, desperately trying to crawl upwards, towards the golden hikari.

Hei stared as the golden orb that had engulfed Ying slowly fall to the top of the roof. It slowly perished, leaving in its wake, a girl with long strands of black hair flowing down her back, standing up. As she slowly turned around, Hei saw her eyes had a manic red glint in them, embroidered with a scarlet aura. The great black scythe materialized in her hands and she swung it with a broad grin on her face.

The air was instantly filled with cries of pain. Ying had left all the contractors surrounding Hei motionless on the floor. One who was surprisingly tough, tried to sneak up on her but the blue aura engulfed her and the man disappeared in the black hole as Ying touched his bald head.

Was that really Ying?

Then, Kuro Sakura reformatted itself into blades, floating by Ying's side, forming some sort of wings. Her eyes flashed, the blades flung themselves at the sole contractor whom had threatened to take her life just minutes before. The echoes of his screams didn't leave his mind for quite a long time. Hei slowly stood up, then step by step made his way towards Ying. Unable to define whether she really was the girl she knew, he paused.

Ying turned towards him, still with a dangerous smile etched into her pretty face, her eyes still giving off the scarlet aura. Then the moment passed. Ying returned to her usual self, her face being replaced by tearful eyes. She ran towards Hei and hugged him tight. "Hei, don't leave me." She whispered in between sobs. Hei slowly embraced her, then harder until she was completely pressed against him. He knew that contractors shouldn't cry, but he concluded at the fact that Ying may be the same as himself.

After a few moments, Ying finally said "Hei, can I borrow your coat? Its so cold." Hei's eyes slowly drifted downwards, but Ying said "Don't look!" He quickly turned away and handed Ying his coat.

Minutes later after Ying had buttoned the coat up, they disappeared into the night. The rain had stopped, the moon had come out again. However this time, it was giving off its trance anymore.

Misaki arrived on the roof, only to find the scene to be deserted except for the many bodies that lined the floor. They seem to have all been hit by the same attack, since the wounds across their necks formed a perfect ring, as if putting together a jigsaw puzzle. There was one that lay somewhat away from the others. As Misaki approached, she gasped in horror. His bulging eyes swelled to twice its size, the star shaped wound on his stomach was sopping magenta. The blood splattered around it formed some sort of flower, a bloody sakura.

Misaki recalled Kanami talking to her about The Stargazer, Hoshimi Sama. She had spoken today, informing them about an Angel being embraced by the Shinigami himself. The angel was suppose to be reborn as the new master of death. Perhaps this is her doing, Misaki thought. Aside from all that, 49 stars had fallen this evening. Among the many that were active, BK201 and KS917 shone the brightest. In fact, KS917's had been so radiant, that it was confirmed that her star had turned a dark shade of pure black.

It was now that Misaki saw something else. There was a patch of white, drifting slowly down from the railings above, a white jacket which hadn't been inked with the massacre below. It floated down and propped itself on Misaki's outstretched arm. Strange, it looked oddly familiar. She realized in alarm. This was the same coat she had bought for Yui just a few days ago. Sinking to her knees, she wept about the fact that she let someone she could have saved die. There wasn't true evidence that Yui had died during this incident, but everything pointed this way.

Straightening herself up, Misaki vowed to take BK201 in to custody, to make him pay for the many innocent lives he had taken.

I sat on the bed, a book propped open in my bare hands. The lamp on the bedside table shone warmly on the pale white pages. Marking my page, I closed the book. The Waltz of Death, a text about a police not being able to catch the mass murderer that was roaming the city. One tiring night, in his dream, he met Death. He said he was cursed, that he himself was the mass murderer. Being in despair, he ended his own life and gladly welcomed death with open arms.

Turning off the lamp, I lay down, staring through the window at the moon. The silver hikari had dimmed, it now looked darker than black, the trance it used to had a extinguished. My mind whizzed through the nights events, about sitting on the railings, about remembering everything, about seeing the Shinigami himself. The warmth of the voice, calling "Yui", the pull and shout of the person who drew her back from being lost in abyss. Hei. So it was. Hei was always there for me, no matter what kind of trouble I am in. I still owe him a thanks, for protecting me when I was small, and returning my memories. I jumped up and my feet brought myself in front of Hei's room, gently I knocked.

Hei sat on his bed, still thinking about what he had witnessed. The Ying with scarlet eyes, the smile filled with bloodlust, the blades that left the contractor lying in the middle of a messy masterpiece, everything. She was different, she was no longer the girl he had once knew, not the one he had Bai had met years before. It was as if...

A gentle knock on the door, Hei snapped out of his thoughts. Ying poked her head in and said in a whisper "Hei, are you awake?"

"Yes." Hei replied, his heart thumping. Ying emerged into the room and walked over, then propped herself on the bed beside him.

"What were you thinking about?" She inquired, staring into his midnight blue eyes. As he stared back, he realized that the eyes gazing into his was just as it always had been, black with a beam of hope deeply etched into them.

"Nothing." Hei shook his head, turning his head slightly away. Ying lay her head on his shoulder and placed her arms around his neck. Hei felt rigid in the embrace, but then felt the warmth that flooded through it as well.

"Arigato Hei, for always being by my side." Ying whispered, closing her eyes as she did so.

Hei smiled and closed his eyes as well. This is Ying, she hasn't changed. How foolish to think otherwise.

They stayed like this for quite a while, until Hei felt the arms around his neck slump a little. Turning around, he saw the innocent face had already drooped slightly, fast asleep. Smiling to himself, he gently lay the figure down on the bed, and tucked the blankets in around her. Lying down himself, he stared into her face. It was the same face to which Yui had, the one of a ten year old child.

To be continued...
